"UGH" Kalis groans as the spell washes over him, leaving his whole body throbbing and achy. He shakes it off after a moment and moves carefully into the room, looking for any sign of danger.

Kalis steps into a burial chamber. Small cubbies are set into the walls and were once filled with a variety of crocks, urns, and vials. The magical explosion has broken all of them, mixing their contents into a runny paste that drips down the stone and pools on the floor. More clay pots lie shattered upon the tile, their contents scattered across the room; a hint of sparkle against the torchlight indicates some gemstones and coins were once contained inside.

Seemingly untouched is a stone sarcophagus that rests upright against the far wall, opposite the door. Carved onto the lid is the image of a figure at rest, arms crossed upon its chest and hands clasping what look like symbols of office: a scepter topped with an open eye, and a large rod with a flaming orb. A circle of light halos the figure's head, and robes drape from its shoulders to envelop the body and legs.

Maenor shakes off the ringing into his ears and steps into the room. Seeing the sarcophagus, he squares his shoulders and sets his shield.

"Prepare yourselves, my friends. This seems likely to hold the foe we seek."
Jul 6, 2017 5:01 pm
Kalis nods, "Who wants to open it?"
Jul 6, 2017 10:07 pm
"Maybe we can knock and he'll nicely answer and save us the trouble." Coda stays back, letting the more sturdy of the bunch take lead.
Jul 6, 2017 10:35 pm
The sarcophagus remains still, its lid closed.
Jul 7, 2017 12:19 am
Maenor walks forward cautiously.
Jul 7, 2017 12:31 am
Maenor is able to get close to the sarcophagus. Nothing else moves, and the lid remains shut.

"Go ahead and open it," Kalis urges softly, "I'll be ready to back you up with my magic."
Jul 8, 2017 12:10 am
Maenor attempts to open the sarcophagus.

The lid slides away easily, and once free from the sarcophagus it leans precariously before crashing to the floor.

Revealed as the dust settles is a mummified body, posed similarly to the carving on the lid. A fine maroon robe is draped loosely around the thin figure, large voluminous sleeves and hem edged in gold trim. There is a death mask upon the head made of what looks like solid gold, with a featureless face, eyes closed save for a central third eye that is open on the forehead.

All is still.

"That's... not what I expected. I kind of expected a fight," Kalis says hesitantly.
Jul 10, 2017 9:44 pm
Maenor rubs his chin and quirks an eyebrow, "Perhaps." He reaches out to gently touch the mummified body as he opens his senses to nefarious magic.

The robes are made of a fine material with a silken sheen. The body itself is dry and near-brittle, almost as if it were made with layers of dust. The death mask has taken on almost a bronzed look from age that have settled upon the contours, yet the color still shines through in the light.

The room itself, after the ringing in the ears has subsided, appears peaceful. Even the crunch of shattered glass on the floor does little to dissuade the calm.

Beyond the door, however, is a different story. That malevolent feeling seems to clutch at the shadows beyond the torch-lit hallway, as though something were watching, and waiting.
Jul 11, 2017 2:20 am
Coda crawls through legs and makes his way to Maenor "Do you think you can lift me up?"
Jul 11, 2017 10:26 am
Maenor looks down at Coda with amusement, "Only if you promise to look with your eyes, not your hands."

He becomes more serious, and somewhat contemplative, as he looks back up at the figure before him. "I think this is not our enemy, and we should allow him his rest with dignity."
Jul 11, 2017 11:00 am
"That's..." Coda looks down to his feet "That is a promise I cannot make. I agree with you that this is not our enemy." He points up at the mask "We've seen eyes all over this place and they've proved to be exponential to our success so far. Look around, we've already disturbed his final resting place, his grave has been desecrated. A fact I can take from this is one of two things. One, the evil that resides here was afraid to enter this room, which is why it has remained untouched for so long; or two, the evil that resides here placed that thunderous trap to dissuade entry and desecrate his resting place. I believe whoever this is, is a protector of sorts...I think taking his mask to defeat whatever evil plagues this tomb is the most dignifiable thing we can do for him at this point."
Jul 13, 2017 10:13 am
Maenor considers Coda's words, "Perhaps." He looks up again at the golden visage of the mummified remains and adds, "...and perhaps it would be wise to first check for further traps."

He pulls a cloth and some candles from his bag and spends the next 10 minutes completing what appears to be a ritual.
OOC:
Casting Detect Magic as a ritual. Don't know why I didn't think of doing this earlier.
Jul 13, 2017 4:24 pm
Once the ritual is completed, Maenor's senses are drawn to the robe around the mummified body. The cloth appears wrapped in abjuration magic.

Maenor also detects some enchantment emanating from both Kalis and Daniel.
