"How about this, you let us through for free and in turn I will give you some business tips as it is very clear you lot are in need of some help."

The orc in studded leather chortles a bit, before guffawing into full laughter. He slaps his knee and shakes his head. "That's brilliant! This guy's a natural, he's so funny!" This causes the other orc and the half-orc to laugh, and the elf to smile. The two archers above do not join in, but they do pull their bowstrings back a bit.

Then, almost as quickly as it started, the laughter stops. "No, seriously," says the orc, smile dropping as his crossbow comes up to rest on his shoulder. All pretense of mirth has faded, and the orc's jaw is set. "You either pay the toll, or you go back the way you came."

"It wasn't meant to be a joke and I'm not being funny. My advice would be worth more than what you would get out of us and your next visitors and the next visitors after that." Coda shrugs "But if you want to belittle me, I guess we'll go back the way we came. Have a nice day and good luck with your practices." Coda turns, pats Maribel, "Come on, girl." and starts to walk away with her.

The gatekeepers make no move to stop you, watching your departure.

While Coda is walking away, he whispers to which ever member is out of the earshot of the orcs "Watch the ranged ones, I don't trust them."

Maenor keeps a close eye on the brigands as the halfling walks back to the group.

The archers watch you like proverbial hawks. Their bows are held downward and not in your immediate direction, but still readied. The three orcish humanoids stand by the wall, semi-relaxed, and the orc that spoke to you gives a small wave. The elf is expressionless, and idly scratches his scalp with his stick.

From the valley slope beyond the wall, a raven takes to the sky. None of the gatekeepers seem to notice.

"Not a bad move... the path may be inconvenient, but it certainly beats having to fight a mass of foul brigands like those..."

"Yes, so long as they don't start raining arrows down on us as soon as they see where we're going," Kalis remarks.

You head back the way you arrived, and the road gradually rises upward as it leaves this valley. A glance at the map shows that taking the long way around will keep you on the grasslands, but will add approximately 4 more days before you are able to return to the caravan route.

No person can be seen, nor any creature around seems to show much interest in you. Even the raven in the sky looks content to soar amidst the thermals.

"Well, that approach didn't work. However, I did have another idea over there but I wanted to make it known to the rest of you before enacting it, as it is a much more aggressive approach. Honestly though, I don't think it is worth it. I think we should just take the loss of four days and keep our lives and belongings." Coda scratches at his beard and gauges the groups reaction.

"I should like to hear your idea, friend Coda."

"It is nothing spectacular and like I said much more aggressive. We oust them for what they are, common thieves, in hopes of intimidation but I highly doubt they'd be moved by threats. This is just my beliefs but I think the only way past them is paying their exorbitant toll or killing them." Coda sighs before giving Maenor a smile "I've given my thoughts on this and do believe the four extra days is much more favorable. However, I am but one of this family, I will follow and support whatever the group decision is."

"They may be common thieves, but it seems unnecessarily violent, not to mention a risk of our mission. I say we take the long way around and consider ourselves lucky," Kalis says.
Nov 15, 2016 4:25 am
"I agree with Kalis. I'd prefer to avoid what conflict we can, as I know there will be plenty we cannot avoid."

Your journey down the longer route sees no pursuit, and you are alone in your travels save for the lone raven circling the air above. The terrain here features more rolling hills with some kopjes scattered amidst the grassland. You find no difficulty with walking and your progress is smooth, but you do see that a caravan of wagons or other large vehicles would not fare as well as yourselves on foot.

You are now a half-day from the encounter with the gatekeepers, and the sun is beginning to set low upon the horizon. The time for setting camp is drawing nigh, and even the raven flaps its wings towards the distance, perhaps looking for shelter.

Coda gives praise to Maribel throughout the day with the occasional handful of feed to keep her motivated. Glancing at the setting sun "We should find a place to settle down for the night soon, preferably sans ogres this time." Coda lets out a light chuckle before talking in a more quizzical tone "Perhaps this is just me and my imagination but has that raven been following us?"
Nov 15, 2016 10:32 am
"I believe you are correct. It troubles me that it leaves us now. We should be wary."
OOC:
Which direction did it fly off?
Nov 15, 2016 3:58 pm
The raven flew off in the direction of the valley, and by your estimate the gate you did not pass through.
Nov 15, 2016 4:09 pm
"Well, it looks like we should keep a close watch tonight, because I think we're going to have trouble."
