To follow along with Coda's words, Geno unbuckles his sword sheathe, places it on the ground behind him, and walks a bit forward. Not closing the gap, but distancing himself from his weapon.

The white-haired goblin remains where they are, though they watch Geno's actions very carefully. With narrowed eyes, they study the tiefling, glance over to Kalis and Daniel, spare a look at Maenor, and seems to come to some conclusion. They return their gaze to Coda.

"I will not call back my people," they say, almost eloquently in a tenor that lacks the harshness of the goblin language. There is a cadence to their words that belies a higher intelligence than most goblins are presumed to have. "Our conversation does not depend on their presence. They will leave, and you and your companions will let them leave unharmed. In return, I will stay and answer your questions."

They wait to hear your response.

"I don't think you are aware of the situation on our hands right now. We had the option to easily ambush you, Geno and I were able to talk the rest down to have a conversation with you. Personally, I don't care what your people do and if it was up to me they'd be free to go, however, it is not up to me. My people they have their own opinions on this situation, I don't control them, I can't promise your people's safety if they start to run off. You're their leader, they look to you for guidance, don't send them off into uncertainty." Coda stretches out his legs before tucking them in and resting his arms on his knees "You haven't been very trustworthy with me, you've avoided my question twice, speaking in different tongue." Coda turns to Geno
[ +- ] Halfling
he faces back to the goblin "See it's shiesty, isn't it? Now, i'll ask a third time. What happened here?"
Jan 12, 2017 4:21 pm
"You've asked your question and I will answer, but not under these conditions," says the white-haired goblin. They frown. "You ask for trust, then tell me that the act of my people leaving is considered 'aggression?' You call for leadership, to have me put my people in your hands, yet you are not leader of your own group and 'can't make promises?'

"Perhaps, as you've said, I 'haven't been very trustworthy,' and while your actions thus far have earned you this discussion, I haven't seen anything else from you worth trusting."

The goblin straightens, as best they can against their staff. Their chin lifts in an expression of resolve. "I promised you my cooperation. My people will leave. Whatever your leader decides to make of it will demonstrate how much he desires the answer to your question."

Geno whispers to Coda, "We gain little if they stay. I'm hardly worried about reprisal if we treat them with civility. Let us simply ask our queries of the willing party and be done with it. The longer we are here, the more I worry about those who traveled with the caravan."
Jan 13, 2017 6:28 am
"What conditions? Your people are alive, I think that is a prime condition, that is more than our other encounters can say. So why send them away when they are safe where they are? If you want to send them away, do it, it makes no difference to me. I told you what could happen, if you choose to ignore my warnings and something does happen, their blood will be on your hands not ours." Coda turns to Geno "And I care little if they go, I simply wish to have no casualties on either sides." he turns back to the goblin "We just want to know what happened here. The vibe I'm getting from your decisions, is making me think you had something to do with this destruction. I have no desire to kill women or children, but I don't know if the others share my beliefs, so your people are safest near us."

Seeing the tiny goblin children strikes some pity in Maenor's heart. While he despises all of goblinkind, he despises people who bully innocents even more. He dismounts and walks his horse over to his comrades, calling out, "Let them go. As a show of good faith. This man clearly will not speak until they do, and I don't think any of us are the type of men who would kill babies to get someone to talk."
Jan 13, 2017 1:46 pm
Kalis, standing not far away speaks, "Send your people to wherever you'd like, they need not fear danger from me, or any of us, I think."
Jan 13, 2017 4:33 pm
The white-haired goblin looks to each person as they speak, wheels clicking in their head as they try to decipher the group's intentions. Finally, they turn and gently lifts their hand to call attention from the other goblins. They calmly speak a few words, perhaps some instructions given the nature and context. They touch a hand to their chest and speaks again, then makes a 'go forth' gesture.

One of the goblins steps forward and barks a statement, or a question (it's hard to tell with Goblin). They seem to not agree with what the white-haired goblin said. Another goblin reaches forward to pull the first back, as though guiding them away. The other goblins gingerly back away, with those furthest from the party turning to walk into the desert.

The white-haired goblin says a few more words. Though guttural and raspy, these words seem to give comfort to the hesitant goblin, who joins the others as they depart. The white-haired one leans on their staff as they watch them go.
OOC:
Do any of you do anything?

Maenor does not intervene.
Jan 13, 2017 6:39 pm
Geno turns to the white-haired one. "Your people are noble. There are plenty of forces that plague this land that would be happy to turn their strength in numbers into a wealth of plunder. Simple civility... we've noticed in our journey... is not so simple. You'll have to forgive us for us jitters, with that considered."
Jan 14, 2017 4:04 am
Kalis watches the goblins leave out of the corner of his eye, but makes no move to stop them (as promised).
Jan 14, 2017 4:51 am
Coda stares at the white-haired goblin as the rest leave.

The goblins disappear into the desert. The white-haired goblin turns to face your group again, and points to a nearby wagon with their staff. "This is the work of dog-men and their underlings," they say, with a heavy sigh. "It is not the first group of travelers that have been attacked here. Much of whatever would be valuable to men such as you has already been taken by them, but you are free to see that for yourselves."
Jan 15, 2017 12:02 am
Coda turns to his party "Perhaps it was the dog-men we encountered on our way here. One second." he holds his finger up and walks over to Maribel, pulling out the two letters and map. He walks back over to the goblin and lays the items before him "You wouldn't be able to tell us about these, would you?"
Jan 15, 2017 2:20 am
The white-haired goblin reaches down to pick up the documents. You can see their eyes scanning the words on the letters. Finally they look back up at you. "This letter reads,
Quote:
Guarg's advances into our territory will not be tolerated. The takeover of several waypoints along the merchant trail is an act of aggression that is undoubtedly a precursor to an invasion. For now, observe their activity and make note of their movements. Reports are expected daily.

Vulzal
"The second letter says,
Quote:
Vrard,

I know you have been in contact with the orc's men at the western checkpoint. You are ordered to maintain this arrangement and report back with everything you have discovered. Do this, and I will look favorably upon this otherwise treasonous act.

Vulzal
"This map, however. I am not familiar with the area it describes. These markings are labeled as outposts, with a main camp up north. The two towers are marked as checkpoints."

The goblin holds the letters and map out, returning them to Coda.
Jan 15, 2017 6:01 am
"Do you recognize any of the names on the letters or if they are the dog-men?
Jan 15, 2017 6:50 am
The white-haired goblin shakes their head. "I do not know these names. I can tell you that those were written in Goblin. In my experience, the dog-men do not speak it."
Jan 15, 2017 7:20 am
Coda scratches his beard "That means our previous encounters with hostiles weren't them. What has your experience with them been?"
OOC:
If anyone else has any questions, feel free to jump in, don't let me hog the spotlight.

The goblin tilts their head, as though considering whether or not to answer. "Raiders and murderers for their dark masters," they finally say. "We avoid them as much as we can, as they hunt us for sport. But they prefer better prey." They point to a broken wagon with their staff as an example.
