Ane views this whole situation with suspicion. What are the chances, She thinks, of the only other person in the place we decide to take refreshments being involved in the case against the person we are looking for? And to have transcripts of the hearings as well‽

She stares at the man ... and the shop, and the cats, and everything, looking for signs of magic or any indication that things are being manipulated. While she did not notice anything earlier, she has not forgotten that her companions suspected they were being followed, and the Red Wizards of Thay are capable of anything.

Asha
tibbius says:
The old scribe has a worried face. "How could you suggest that the amlakkar would detain someone unjustly? All know that the pashah and his servants are wise."
"I am certainly NOT suggesting that at all!" Asha argues, her temper rising. Unfortunately she is too focused on her argument with the old man to notice the inquisitive look on Ane's face as she contemplates the strange coincidences about their situation.

"YOU are the one suggesting the amlakkar are being unjust. I think everyone can agree, it's unjust to detain someone without cause. YOU are saying that's what the amlakkar have done, so you are suggesting they have been unjust! The only other explanation is that they acted justly and you are hiding the cause from us for some reason," she accuses the old man.

Garrett will look at scribe"Do cats usually act this around here?"

The elderly scribe looks confused and a bit frightened. "A - uh - ah" he sputters. Clutching the scroll to his chest he leaves the shop. The owner of the shop, an equally old man, shouts after him "Your tab!" and to you "You make a disturbance! Get out!"
Apr 3, 2025 1:30 am
OOC:
If you would prefer to prevent the old man leaving, feel free to intervene. Generally when I narrate a thing you are welcome to "interrupt" after with an action you could take in media res.

Asha
The old scribe's disengagement frustrates Asha even more than his words. It pushes her over the top and fire flash briefly in her eyes as she reaches out with her magic to charm the old man before he leaves the cafe. She rarely uses her magic to manipulate others because her charisma is usually enough. When she does resort to invading someone's mind, it's usually after she's lost her temper.

Asha's affect is suddenly tranquil and pleasant again. "I am very sorry for the disturbance. I can cover the gentleman's tab," she says to the owner with an apologetic smile and tosses him a coin.

She turns her attention back to the scribe. "I think we can all be civil. Please friend, come back and join us," she says calmly and offers a chair at their table.
OOC:
Asha casts "Charm: Target treats you as a friend until something leads them to question this."

I believe I roll Presence to avoid being hindered until I can rest and "pray" which I think we had decided to flavor as I meditate with my lamp instead of pray to a god as that fits my character better.

Rolls

Cast Charm (Presence) - (1d10)

(2) = 2

Asha
OOC:
Ooh, bad roll!
Asha's eyes widen and the smile on her face vanishes as she suddenly realizes that she's losing her hold on the spell like sand slipping through the fingers of a hand trying to hold too much.

A chill washes over her as the magic dissipates ...

The old man's confusion turns to rage as Asha's magic seeps from his mind like bad wine.

Presumably this 'old man' is the 'elderly scribe' not the 'equally old' shopkeeper?

... more to come
Are we waiting for this before responding? (Not that I have a response as it stands.:)

The scribe almost but not quite drops his scroll as he slaps Asha's face! "Dark magic! Beguiling witch!" he exclaims. "Tooth, alert the amlakkar!"

The shopkeeper hustles out the front of the store as fast as a hunched old man can scamper, shouting raspily, "Alarum o! Alarum o!"

"That was nothing. You want magic?" Ane mutters under her breath, more than a little excited to finally get to use her first 'spell' 'in anger'. She takes a deep breath and focuses her mind on the arcane words she has memorised for so long, and shapes a sense of calm and quiet over the two old men, forcing them into sleep.

Not only will this stop the call —hopefully before anyone hears— they will also be able to collect the papers from the scribe and learn why Dalana is being held.
OOC:
Wizardry: Take 1 spell. Cast with Reason at risk of unnatural or dangerous side effects on (1–2) you or (3–4) a friendly target.
Sleep: Put as many targets to sleep as the highest die rolled when casting.

Rolls

Reason: Wizardry, Sleep - (d10)

(6) = 6

Two old men, three cats, and who else? = Garrett collapse into slumber like cut-string puppets.

What do Asha and Ane do now?

Rolls

Garrett = odd, Asha = even - (1d6)

(5) = 5

Asha
OOC:
Wow, I assumed that was up to X people, but regardless we're lucky because I think Garrett ignores sleep magic!
Asha screams when the old scribe slaps her, raising a hand to hold the sting on her cheek. Her head sinks in disappointment as she feels the sting of failure too thinking she's ruined their mission and that they'll need to flee now, but then hears Ane's words and the incantation that follows, she looks up in time to see everyone collapse to the ground.

"Impressive! Thanks for handling that!" she says looking towards Ane with an impressed expression and smile. As she stands up to prepare to leave before the old men wake, she feels the fatigue that accompanies the sudden loss of her magic.

Chalrytharendir says:
Wow, I assumed that was up to X people, ...
Likewise. Though maybe a better than 6 roll will also allow better control?
Maybe it caught any amlakkar who were close enough to hear the call? But Ane was focusing on the enemies she could see, so affecting those outside her view seems a bit too convenient. :)
Chalrytharendir says:
... we're lucky because I think Garrett ignores sleep magic!. ...
Which is also interesting since, maybe, Ane thinks it does not affect her friends, and will learn later that this is because he is special. :)
"Thanks." Ane says, impressed herself.

"Grab those papers and let's get out of here before someone comes to check!" Ironically, while saying this she is checking the two old men to make sure they are safe to leave where they lie.

Garrett will look at the others"Yes grab the papers and maybe we take them back to the big man and he can figure something out on her to get her back. He is bound to have connections here."
OOC:
Yes, Garrett ignores sleep magic.

Asha
Asha grabs the scribe's papers and tucks them into her satchel with her lamp before the group leaves the cafe and heads back to Erare sabban to report to Zhad.
Apr 5, 2025 2:42 pm
Ane looks around once they seem to have gotten clear. "Did anyone see us?" She asks.

Then: "Should we take a look?" She suggests. "It will take time to get back to Big Zhad, and he sent us to sort it out, not to come back with information. Maybe we can do something? We have sprung people from gaol before."
Apr 5, 2025 5:09 pm
"We were to find her and the package. We have found her and it might be easier for Zhad to get her out and find out what happened to the package." He looks to the others "He might have contacts on the inside to get her out. Either way we need to get out of here pronto."

Asha
Once they are out of the Quill ward and the coast seems clear, Asha turns into an empty alley and takes out the papers to read.

"Let's see what this says, maybe there's more we can do before heading back. But if not, it doesn't hurt to regroup and see if Zhad has some resources that will help free Dalana. At a minimum I'll need to change my appearance, the men will likely report me to the amlakkar once they wake. It's a good job you were disguised Ane, and Garrett, your outfit keeps you non-descript. But I've been drawing more eyes than usual since the spa, so I'll need to cover up, unless you're magic will work on me too," she asks Ane at the end.

"I don't see why not." Ane says when Asha asks to be Disguised, the spell description did not say otherwise. "Though I am not sure how far away I can keep it up, or on both of us. But let's try."

Ane motions Asha over and take her hands, standing close and looking at her face. It really is a quite striking face. Ane thinks. The added attention is not from the swanky, new clothes. But she shakes herself, not wanting to get distracted.

Ane does not suggest for Garrett to look through the paper while they work, she knows that many people can not read, at least not beyond the basics, and does not want to make an issue of it.

They are in a safe (or 'safe enough') place, out of the view of the street, so Ane takes her time, concentrating on the words of the new spell, just like when she did it alone in her room, gently shaping the weave of magic around her friends face and body...
OOC:
Should I roll Wizardry for Disguise on Asha?
I don't see how others can help, but I should get a circumstance Help die from taking my time, right?
