Zuni brings the Wayward Wind up to the drifting Beowulf, the ship listing, hull scorched and leaving a trail of sparks. It's barely space worthy, but intact for now. If you could get the life support back up and manoeuvre drive up running, it could land for more extensive repairs.

As you make your way to the docking bridge, you find Heretic Squad is all suited up and ready to go.

"These Sword Worlders were no match for you," praises One as they fall in line with Alerio and Fallon. Though there is no outward emotion on the Feskal's serene face, you can hear the subtle pride in his voice. "Congratulations on your victory."

Each one of the broad-shouldered men are ready to accompany the crew as needed.
OOC:
Who's going over? Just Alerio and Fallon? Feel free to jump over at any time
When you cross the docking bridge and into the Beowulf, you immediately fall into zero-g, which is always disorienting for those untrained to operate in this manner. The air is thinning, but there's still enough atmosphere to hear warning sirens blaring, and the halls are bathed in flashing emergency lights that cut through a thick haze of smoke.

Comms are open with Seally and Zuni, who can hear everything that Fallon and Alerio can hear, and vice versa.

Captain Falkirk is there to greet you, and fills you in on the situation as he guides you through his cramped ship. "You couldn't have better timing. The Calibrandr just started shooting up Walston," he recalls. "Took out Central's defences and barracks, while pirates stormed the downport. We were trying to get away but the Calibrandr caught us. Come, our medical officer is wounded and on the bridge. And Engineering is through that portal, if you can lend a hand."

Moving in zero G is tricky, but fortunately, ships are designed with hand-holds along the corridors in the event of life support shutdown, and you make your way.

At the bridge, Fallon finds the medical officer badly burned from an explosion. You'll have to bring him back to the Wayward Wind to treat him as the air is too thin to remove their Vacc Suit, clearly put on him after sustaining the burns. Your Feskal is ready to help haul them.

In Engineering, Alerio finds the chief engineer working frantically to seal the microfractures in the hull and jump-start the atmosphere generators. He tosses you a data pad, which floats through the zero G gracefully, and brings you up to speed. There's not much time for thanks, but he does manage to interject: "Our bacon would be cooked if it weren't for you and your crew." He gestures to the Feskal: "Big fella, you mind holding this light?"
OOC:
Feel free to give us an Engineering and Medical check with a little in-character narration of what's going on, KCC and Nezz! The medical officer has serious burns and he's going to die without intervention, but you can cryofreeze him in a low berth if things don't go well. It'll be risky to thaw him, but maybe you can get some help with that. KCC, for your engineering check, you can roll with a Boon as you are working with help.

60 minutes until Dreks starts killing folks!

"You weren't kidding about just in time," Fallon says while looking at their medical officer. She tries to keep a blank face but she can't keep a wince out as she gives him a quick lookover. "He's badly burned. We can't treat him here; we'll have to move him to our ship immediately, but very gently. I'll inject him with some pain killers and saline for dehydration now. Ready?" She looks to her former Heretic Squad member for confirmation. "Ok, let's do it."

Beowulf looks worse than Zuni had anticipated but their crew was smart and resourceful. He hoped they could get the ship's drive and life support systems up and running. In the meantime, he'd hold The Wayward Wind steady as they approached and docked. He'd follow the action on the comms.

"Our victory!" Alerio reminds the newest members of their crew! They had done only slightly less than she in defense of the Wayward and the Beowulf! It was only right that they got to put a notch in their belt for the victory!

"They really chewed you up!" Alerio says, marveling at the damage before she rolls her sleeves up and tries to patch up what she can!

"They must have got all their good shots off on you!"

Fallon and One race the injured man back to the ship, slipping through the corridor as emergency lights flicker overhead. Painkillers and saline flood into his veins the moment they set him down, taking the edge off his agony. One, the Feskal Warrior, peels away the ruined vacc suit with utmost calm, and Fallon dives into a quick triage, gloved hands moving fast. The next ten minutes are tense—each breath the man takes rattles in his chest—but Fallon’s skill and steady focus pull him back from the brink. His vitals stabilize, no longer thrashing wildly, though he’s still in danger. They’ll need better equipment soon, but for now, he’s alive, thanks to Fallon’s quick thinking.

Meanwhile, Alerio locks herself onto the battered TL 12 life support system, rummaging through half-burned wiring bundles and outdated processors. She splices in a repurposed plasma manifold and overrides the corroded quantum servo-lubricators, forcing the antiquated gravity stabilizers to hum back to life. Deck plating shivers as gravitational pull returns, and a low hiss signals the oxygen processors spinning up. It’s a rough fix—telltale sparks jump from the improvised coupling harness—but it’ll keep the atmosphere cycling until the Beowulf can reach a proper starport.

The only hitch? The Walston downport is under pirate occupation, making a standard landing all but impossible. Regardless, their chief engineer claps Alerio on the back, eyes wide with admiration: "Where’d you learn to jury-rig a coupling harness like that?"
OOC:
50 minutes left until the Dreks' deadline! It'll take 10 minutes to arrive if you plan to fly down.

"I’m just as surprised as you are!" Alerio says at the praise. In truth, she wasn’t sure the stuff would hold all that long!

"You’re going to want to get this whole thing looked at… just as soon as we kick those losers out of the starport down there! You’ll limp along until then!

Just don’t go annoying any Sword Worlders that come flying by!"

"Well, Fallon says, taking off her gloves and washing up in the medbay sink. "One saved for now, thousands more in jeopardy down on Walston. What do you think, One? How would you deal with this asshole terrorist?"

OOC:
Comms are still open, I think?
"Nice work you guys, er ladies. Now the heck do I land this thing with the port full of pirates? And we're running out of time. Do we have any idea how many baddies are on the port? Can we overpower them?"

Goldie, ever helpful, brings up all the details you know about the Walston downport and the adjoining settlement, Startown.
OOC:
Here is the original post introducing Startown. Ah, the nostalgia! And yes, you can hit Dreks up on comms, though currently you're not connected.

In response to Fallon's question, the leader of the Heretic Squad is a bit surprised. He's used to taking orders from BInar masters, not sharing his insights. He gives it thought.

"All warfare is based on deception. By masking your true intentions, perhaps you can outmanoeuvre the enemy."
Feb 13, 2025 3:52 am
"Okay ladies, we've got a few moves. We made some good contacts here last time. Let's get on the waves and find out what we can. Zuni, as soon as the airlock is sealed get us clear and plot a course for Walston. We needed to find a place to land, but let's not waste time getting there."

Seally uses the comms herself to reach out to Alan Greener who holds, held, multiple portfolios including Fisheries, Transportation, and Sanitation.

Fallon nods her head. "It worked well taking out the Calibrandr, right? Pretend to acquiesce and offer up the ship, but bam! Surprise matronfornicator! It's an ambush!" Fallon grins. "But he may be expecting that. We will need a second layer of subterfuge, I think. Perhaps some Heretic Squad members who don't like freedom as much as they thought and wish to return to their squad?" she asks with a raised eyebrow, hoping he picks up on her suggestion.
Feb 13, 2025 11:39 am
"Risky! He doesn’t sound like the type to accept apologies! He could take care of them as soon as they show their faces!" Alerio says with a grimace!

"We either think of something really damn convincing, or we just face him head on!"

Maybe we could inspire an uprising, or call for back up…

Seally contacts Alan Greener, smiling at Fallon's matronfornicator line.

"Aye aye Cap," Zuni replies as he swings his seat around and types in the coordinates for Walston.

"We could definitely use some planet -side help."

Alan Greener returns your hail immediately. He comes on screen, looking bruised and dirty.

"Dame Seally, you and your crew have a knack for timely arrivals! Here's the situation - Dreks arrived last night in the Calibrandr and shot up Central pretty bad. Took us completely by surprise and neutralized our surface-to-air missiles, blew up our motor pool, and demolished our train system. The Palace got hit pretty hard, too."

"Since they hit our motor pool, we don't have much in the way of vehicles left. We've been warned that if we come within 5 miles of Startown, they'll start putting bullets in people. We have a team at the edge of that radius ready to respond, just ambulances with medical personnel."

"We have contact with Simi, the curator of the sand museum, on the inside in Startown. She counts at least 10 pirates, including Dreks. She and most of the hostages are being held in Hanky's, the local bar. The pirates seem to rotate in and out of Hanky's, so they must be holed up elsewhere, too."

"We've been working on a plan to use Horace Symon's old farming submarines to come into the town off the water, but we've only managed to get two working craft in range. Each can carry 4 people."

Green sends over some details about the location and floor plan of Hanky Panky's bar. (Note that the water is to the east of the town)

Seally passes that on to the others, copying the conversation into the logs for their review. "We've seven of us. We didn't come expecting to fight in a guerrilla action, but we're not unarmed. The two submarines would get us there and into their midst unexpectedly. If we can sneak up to Hanky's, perhaps we can ambush them. I wish we had a few canisters of sleep gas. I also wish someone would invent sleep gas."
Feb 14, 2025 6:22 pm
"It would be good to know where the other pirates are going when they leave the Hanky Panky. Maybe their guards will be down as they sleep or relax from their hostage-watching shift."

Chewing on a lip, deep in thought he adds, "Do the pirates know about the subs? How many hostages are being held? Any that can fight?"

"Sleeping gas? Our old friend Gino might be able to dig up a stun grenade. And hey, the Museum of Sand has an old Imperial sandcaster turret in it. We use it during Sand Days to make rainbow displays, so I'm sure it's in working order. It's meant to be mounted on a starship, but if you could find a way to pull the trigger, it could do some serious damage*"

"I don't think the pirates know about the subs, Horace operates them from an island out in the sea, there's little chance they've seen them. Ling Standard Model B farming subs."

He sends a photo your way to see what you're working with.

*Sandcasters are meant to create clouds of sand in space combat that dissipate laser fire. Mostly a defensive thing; they'd barely scratch the paint of a starship. But when pointed at a ground-scale target, they do d6x10 damage, like a giant shotgun.
