OOC:
Welcome to Misthaven University, Runekyndig! This is your character generation thread.

OOC:
Before we dive into the wonders and challenges of the University, let us take a moment to focus on your PC—the curious soul who will soon walk these storied halls. Every student who steps into Misthaven’s lecture chambers carries with them a story, a legacy, and a spark of magic all their own.

So, please, tell us more about them.... If possible, do this In Character, as part of a letter, a dialog with one or more NPCs that you create and we share their control, or something else.

runekyndig says:
My character will be human and curious, willing to poke at things and bend rules to get answers.
The family name is somewhat tainted by an uncle/older brother who joined the dark side. A stigma to live with and overcome.
- What's your name? A name can be a shield, a weight, or a source of pride—what does it means to you?

- From which region of this wide world do you hail? Is it a land of bustling cities, quiet villages, or untamed wilds?

- What of its culture? Does your homeland emphasize tradition, innovation, martial prowess or something else?
And, of course, we must speak of family. You mentioned that your name carries a shadow—a taint left behind by an uncle or older sibling who chose a darker path. How has this shaped your life? Have you faced suspicion or ridicule? Has it made you wary or driven you to prove yourself?
Tell me of your parents. Were they supportive, distant, or even overbearing in their attempt to shelter their child from the family’s blemish? Did they instill your insatiable curiosity, or has it always been a part of you, burning brightly even in the face of reprimands and warnings?
OOC:
The threads of your character’s past will weave their way into the fabric of Misthaven’s story, so take your time and share as much or as little as you like. We’ll use this foundation to build someone ready to step into the unknown and make their mark on the world.

I look forward to learning about your character, and I’m eager to see how their story unfolds even before we enter the halls of Misthaven!

The main idea was for my character to have a sigma to overcome. First though was uncle/brother who joined the darkside i.e. joined voldemort or the equivalent. Since the setting outside the university is generic and undefined, I have decided to simplify it and bring the stigma inside.
My character is a female half-human, half-drow elf. Everybody knows that drows are slavers, worshippers of the spider-demon Lolth and ruled by females with an iron fist.

Her grandmother is the drow queen, Zylarra Nyrazzrin, in a section of the Underdark
The queen has 3 daughters—first one, Velrith, the crow princess. The second, Xilrae, the high priestess of Lolth, and the third daughter Aerynn, was the rebel. This third daughter had a child with a human male adventure Caldan Marrick
Velrith and Xilrae recently staged a cue against Queen Zylarra, but their attempt failed. They were subsequently exiled, and the third daughter is now the crown princess. This is a very unhealthy environment for a halfbreed to be in, so her father Caldan, pulled some strings and now she arrived at Misthaven before the start of the semester
The sun was shining brightly over the sprawling green fields of Misthaven, a place unlike anything Kiraen Nyrazzrin had ever known. The vast expanse of blue sky seemed to stretch forever, a stark contrast to the eternal twilight of the Underdark. Everything here was vivid—the colors, the scents, the sounds—almost overwhelming to someone who had spent much of her life in the shadows.

Kira adjusted her dark sunglasses, the only barrier between her sensitive eyes and the sun’s unyielding brilliance. She found herself wandering near the edge of the academy’s sprawling gardens, where a weathered older man tended to a bed of luminous golden flowers. He wore a wide-brimmed hat, a vest full of gardening tools, and a perpetual expression of calm wisdom. This was Boothby, the groundskeeper of Misthaven and a fixture of the academy for decades.

Boothby noticed her hesitant approach and offered a kind smile. Ah, you must be the new arrival. Miss Nyrazzrin, isn’t it? His voice was warm and gravelly, like the earth he so lovingly tended.

Kira nodded, her lips forming a faint smile in return. Just Kira, she corrected gently, her voice soft but tinged with uncertainty. And yes, that’s me.

Welcome to Misthaven, Kira! Boothby said, setting down his trowel and brushing dirt from his hands. How are you settling in?

She hesitated, then sat down on a nearby stone bench. It’s… different, she admitted, her fingers playing with the edge of her tunic. It’s so bright here. And open. It feels like I’m exposed. But it's also beautiful.

Boothby nodded thoughtfully, his wise eyes studying her. It can be a lot to take in, especially if you’re used to something else entirely. But Misthaven’s a good place to find your footing. What brought you here, if you don’t mind my asking?

Kira glanced at the flowers he’d been tending, their golden hues reminding her of something distant and untouchable. I didn’t have much of a choice, she said quietly. My aunts tried to overthrow my grandmother, the queen. They failed, of course, but… the aftermath wasn’t good for someone like me. A halfbreed. Now my mother is the crown princess and everyone wants to gain favor or influence.
My father thought it would be safer if I came here. He graduated here as a bard years ago.

Boothby’s expression softened, and he nodded for her to continue.

It’s not like I’m not grateful, Kira added quickly, her voice growing firmer. I know this is an amazing opportunity. Misthaven is one of the best places to study magic, and I… I want to be better. I want to prove that I’m more than just a reminder of my family’s failures. But it’s hard. Everything feels so new, and I feel so… small.

Her voice faltered for a moment, and she lowered her gaze. And then there’s the other thing, she admitted, almost in a whisper. When people look at me, they don’t see me. They see a drow. They see evil, slavers, demon worshipers, and tyrants who rule with iron fists. I’m afraid my fellow students will never see past that.

Boothby sat beside her on the bench, the scent of earth and flowers surrounding him. Change is always hard, Kira. It shakes up who we think we are and forces us to see what we’re capable of. But you’re here, and that’s the first step. The light may feel harsh now, but you’ll find your way to stand in it.

Kira looked at him, her brow furrowing. How can you be so sure?

He chuckled softly, his weathered face crinkling with the motion. Because I’ve seen it time and again. Students come here from all sorts of places, carrying all sorts of burdens. The magic of this place isn’t just in the spells and books, Kira. It’s in the growth it nurtures. And something tells me you’re going to grow just fine.

She stared at the golden flowers again, their petals swaying gently in the breeze. I hope you’re right, she murmured.

Boothby rose, patting her shoulder lightly. Give yourself time, Kira. You’ve got a spark about you, and I suspect you’ll find it’s brighter than you think.

As he returned to his gardening, Kira sat quietly, her mind turning over his words. The sunlight still felt too bright, the world too vast, but for the first time, she felt a flicker of something new. Hope.

Noteworthy NPCs
Queen Zylarra Nyrazzrin
Queen in Underdark. She allowed Kiraen's existence and perhaps even enjoyed her company as she was no threat to her power as ruler of Underdark.
Velrith Nyrazzrin
ex-crown princess in exile. Ambitious and vindictive
Xilrae
High Priestess in exile. Ambitious and power-hungry
In an early age, she gave Kiraen a Lolth tattoo on her hip/upper thigh. Without her mother's (Aerynn) permission. It became a source of conflict between the sisters
[ +- ] Tattoo
Aerynn
Mother. Raised Kiraen by herself in the royal palace. Now the crown-princess in the Underdark.
Caldan Marrickn
Father, human adventure, bard. Was adventuring on the top lands while Kiraen grew up.
Boothby
Very much inspired by or stole from Star Trek. Groundskeeper in Misthaven

OOC:
Fantastic! That brings us to the first part of our character sheet. It contains general information and 3 distinctions.

Distinctions are sort of like your character’s "elevator pitch:" reading all of them should tell anyone a lot about who the character is, whether they describe personality quirks, backgrounds, origin or the character’s role in the world.

Mechanically, the same distinction can be used in two ways:

1. To help you, by adding 1d8 to your dice pool
2. To hinder, by adding 1d4 to your dice pool. This greatly increases the chances of a Hitch

If the distinction will be used as a D8 or D4 or not at all, will depend on the situation. Only up to one distinction (the most relevant one) should be used in a single roll.

In our game, the best distinctions are double-edged, say more than one thing, and keep the phrasing simple. They are pretty much written like Fate aspects, if you ever played that RPG.
Below is a character sheet template. You are also free to change, add new sections or otherwise complement it. In my games, character sheets are owned and maintained by the players not the GM. It’s meant to help them. I have other sheets and trackers to help me =)
[ +- ] Misthaven University template
Please fill some of those fields (name, pride, etc) and at least one distinction. With the posts above, I can already imagine what most of them are going to be. =)

We will continue roleplaying after that. If you have any questions, don't hesitate to ask.

I like it. Don't worry. There are no mechanical penalties/bonus, nor game balance implications, for any race, so we have a lot more freedom in our choices here. =)

I have added the following
Quote:
Relentless Curiosity
She is driven to explore every mystery and learn every secret. But there is a chance she will trip over a dead cat. (curiosity killed the cat)

Respectful Rebellion
She is raised in a totalitarian society. Now she is in a very different environment. She will question every rule and convention that stands in her way - or ignore them if convenient. But if people she respects set a rule, she will respect it most of the time.
I feel that there should be something about magic aswell. And elven grace

Something like Dancing Magic
She casts her spells with elven elegance and grace, like a dancer weaving through a ballroom. But is makes her, and her spellwork, somewhat fragile or not rebust.

Or have I misunderstood distinction?
Jan 5, 2025 12:28 pm
The elevator pitch is
She is a curious drow half-elf.
Ready for spellcraft and shenanigans.
But the sheltered princess is way out of her element

I'll go with these instead. But I would love your inputs

I liked them =) Individually, your previous ones were written more like the expected Distinctions. They were by the book. But these 3, as a whole, sound much better. Together, they tell us more and are double-edged too, even if individually they aren't. Let's keep them. =)
Misthaven University was more than a school—it was a living, breathing community. The sprawling campus buzzed with life year-round, a microcosm of scholars, staff, and their families. Residence halls brimmed with laughter and late-night study. The dining halls were never silent, catering to the odd hours of magical research and study. Administration buildings hummed with the steady rhythm of schedules and bureaucracy, while laboratories and classrooms echoed with the murmur of discovery. Even the grand spaces for social gatherings seemed to pulse with magic, as if Misthaven itself were alive.

For Kira Nyrazzrin, every corner of the university was a new puzzle to unravel. In the next morning, this insatiable curiosity had drawn her to the dining hall earlier than usual. She’d found a quiet corner to observe the flow of people—students, professors, and staff alike—each moving with purpose. She was tearing off small pieces of bread and nibbling them thoughtfully when a thunderous laugh shattered the hum of the hall.

"Ha! You call this bread? I’ve seen tougher crusts on a dwarf’s boots!"

Kira’s head snapped toward the source of the voice. Across the hall, a dwarf was holding up a hunk of bread as if appraising it for battle. Her brown hair was neatly pulled into a double braid that framed her round face, emphasizing her sharp jawline and cheerful grin. Her blue eyes sparkled with mischief and warmth, a striking contrast to her practical leather jerkin dusted with white chalk and the sturdy boots worn smooth from heavy labor. Her laughter boomed again, bouncing off the high ceilings and drawing stares from nearly everyone in the room.

https://i.imgur.com/xxF3Ope.jpeg

The dwarf was stocky and broad-shouldered, with hands calloused from hard work. Her tray was piled high with food—eggs, sausages, and bread heaped to a level that seemed impossible for one person. Yet, the dwarf carried herself with an air of unshakable confidence, her raucous energy filling the space.

Kira couldn’t help but watch. As if sensing the weight of Kira’s gaze, the dwarf turned and locked eyes with her. A wide grin spread across her face. "Oi! You there! The one with the fancy shades!"

Kira blinked, startled. "Me?" she asked, her voice barely audible over the din.

"Aye, you!" The dwarf was already striding over, her tray balanced in one hand. She plunked it down on the table across from Kira with a thud, then dropped into the seat with a cheerful sigh. "Mind if I join? Name’s Greta Ironhart. And you must be Kira, aye? Word gets around."

Sure! You can sit here. Kira moves her plate with mushrooms, a little salate and chicken.
Tell me, what is the word that have gotten around? I'm Kiraen Nyrazzrin, but you seems to know that already.

OOC:
Time to roll the dice! This would be a "Persuasion" or equivalent test, as it looks like Kira is genuinely interested in Greta’s perspective and trying to say that without putting her on edge. If Kira is more curious about Greta’s body language or tone, trying to discern what Greta knows without directly asking further questions, an "Insight" or equivalent check will come into play afterwards. This would help Kira gauge whether Greta’s information is based on rumors, firsthand knowledge, or perhaps exaggeration.

This game lets you define your own "skills", called traits. Want to be an excellent lion tamer? Put a D8 or D10 die in "Lion Tamer". Done.

Either way, this roll will use your Social attribute, so before we pick any trait or dice, we need to know your attributes. The simplest (and default) option is to have them all on D8. But if you want, you can have one on D6, another on D8, and the last one on D10.

As a reminder, our attributes are:
charsheet says:
Physical
Mental
Social
Ratings
DieNameDescription
D4 Poor Notably deficient in this area.
D6 Typical An average degree of ability.
D8 Excellent Above-average performance.
D10 Remarkable Greatly above average.
D12 Incredible Peak levels of ability.

What do you choose for your 3 attributes?

We'll talk about skills/professions/traits later. For now, please roll "Social, Do Anything" = 1D? (see above), 1D6, 1D6. Your result will be the sum of the highest two dice.

Rolls

Social roll (opposition) - (2d6)

(56) = 11

Jan 6, 2025 7:09 pm
I'm going with 3xd8 as I can't pinpoint an attributes that could be Typical

Rolls

Social, Do anything - (1d8, 1d6)

1d8 : (6) = 6

1d6 : (2) = 2

Do anything - (1d6)

(2) = 2

OOC:
So, you rolled an 8 (6 + 2, as we keep the highest two results and ignore the other). That's less than 11 - the opposition (DC) I rolled for this specific test, see in my previous post.

Result: The story is heading in a slightly different direction than Kira wanted...

Greta froze for a heartbeat, her grin faltering. She wasn’t often caught off guard, but Kira’s directness had thrown her. Greta shifted in her seat, her blue eyes darting away momentarily, searching for the right words. Her instinct was to laugh it off, but she had the sinking feeling that wouldn’t go over well.

"Well, you know how it is," Greta started, her voice louder than necessary. "A new face on campus, everyone’s just… curious, aye?" She rubbed the back of her neck. But tact wasn’t Greta’s strongest suit, and before she could stop herself, she blurted, "You’re drow, yeah? And, well… people’ve got their ideas about drows... Tyrants, slavers, spider-demon worshippers, and all that nonsense. Not that I believe it! Well, not all of it, anyway."

The moment the words left her mouth, Greta winced. Her face flushed red as she hurried to backtrack. "I mean—blimey—I didn’t mean it like that!"

I'm half Drow. I can't do anything about it, just as you can't grow any taller.
Its not a kind place..

Her eyes track one of the handsome boys.
Especially towards men. There were them, my aunts, who relished in that stuff

She takes a bite to eat to end this line of conversation.
My classes doesn't start for a few weeks. How do you kill time here?

She takes off her sunglasses and winces - even if they are inside.
Greta, your people also lives underground. How do they get used to the light and the open sky? I'm telling you its odd not seeing the cave roof or ceiling. The blue sky is bright, but what really gets me is the night sky - it never stops. I don't know if its cool or freaking me out.

Sorry - I'm bombarding you with questions. There is so much I don't know, and I thought I knew it all.

Greta rested her chin on her hand, thinking. "The sky’s a funny thing, isn’t it? So wide, so empty. It makes you feel small, like the world could swallow you whole. And at night, when it’s all dark and full of stars, it’s like you’re floatin’ in the void. I remember starin’ at it for hours, thinkin’ it was beautiful but scary as hell. It’s not like havin’ solid stone over your head, keepin’ you grounded."

She gave Kira a reassuring grin. "But you get used to it. After a while, the sky starts feelin’ like another kind of roof—one that goes on forever. It’s not bad once you learn to breathe under it. The trick is to stop thinkin’ about how far away it all is and focus on what’s right in front of you."

She gestured broadly to the dining hall. "Like this place. Misthaven’s got so much goin’ on, you’ll barely have time to miss things."
Kira says:
My classes doesn't start for a few weeks. How do you kill time here?
Greta chuckled, her laughter warm and unrestrained. "Killin’ time? Lass, there’s no killin’ time when you’ve got goals to crush and weights to lift. I’m a member of the Misthaven Iron-Lifters Society—proudly so! Best group on campus, if you ask me. We train, we compete, and I’m already breakin’ records left and right. Powerlifting, weightlifting—you name it, I’m givin’ it my all."

She sat up straighter, her chest puffing out with pride. "When I’m not in the gym, you’ll usually find me at Bow’s End Tavern. I love a good pint and a laugh, though, of course, beer doesn’t come free. To keep the coin flowing, I help out at the Stadium. They’ve always got somethin’ heavy that needs liftin’—equipment to set up, stuff to put away, you name it. Most folks would groan about the hard labor, but me? I say it’s perfect. They’re payin’ me to work out, and I get stronger with every shift."

Greta leaned forward, her grin infectious. "Tell you what, Kira. If you’re lookin’ for somethin’ to do, why not stop by the gym? You don’t have to lift anything crazy—we’ve got somethin’ for everyone. And if that’s not your thing, there’s plenty of jobs you can pick up, like workin’ at the tavern or helpin’ out in the library, if you don’t mind the librarians scowlin’ at you. Some folks help the groundskeepers or assist in the labs. Then there are extracurriculars—clubs for all sorts of things. Drama, dueling, alchemy, music… you name it."

She leaned forward, resting her elbows on the table. "Thing is, it’s not just about stayin’ busy. It’s about findin’ what you’re good at—or what you want to get good at. Everyone’s got somethin’ they bring to the table. So, what about you, Kira? What are you already good at?"

I don't think I could match you in strength, but could properly match you in speed and agility. Did a lot of combat training in light weapons. She opens her mouth to elaborate about the her training with the drow assassins but thinks better of it.
I will go see this dueling club...Wait! Is it dueling with blades or magic? Both? There is a gitty excitement of the prospect.

Its funny that you mentions the tavern. My father suggested that I got a job there, serving tea, ale and that kind of stuff. He said it would be a good way to meet people and ground me. She have lived a life in a palace with male servers and slaves. Serving others would be good for her - that was what her father thought anyway.

What kind of lab work? I might do something study related.
OOC:
I envisioned her serving coffee, doing gymnastics, and dueling.
Being a lab assistance would also be fun.

OOC:
Great. I guess Kira has a "Melee Combat (D8)" trait then. Please write this down. =)

Does she also has another trait that is a specialization, like Knifes (D10), Parrying (D10) or Rapier (D10) for example, in addition to the more generic skill? You can expect to have 2-3 specializations, at D10, by the end of Chargen. We can create and name them together, as we roleplay. There are no predefined lists.

You can also expect a few skills at D8 and D4, none at D12. Is one of those D10s related to combat?

Specializations (D10 and D12) replace your more generic skills when applicable. Otherwise you will use the skills you are good at (D8), the skills you are particularly bad at (D4) and the rest on D6.
Kira says:
I will go see this dueling club...Wait! Is it dueling with blades or magic? Both?
Greta chuckled at Kira’s eagerness, her grin broadening. "It’s both, lass. The dueling club’s got somethin’ for everyone. Duelists use magic to do all sorts of things—summonin’ ethereal blades, boostin’ their speed, and even creating shields or illusions. It’s not just about skill with a blade or power in your spells—it’s how you mix the two. Makes for some real excitin’ matches, I’ll tell you that much. You should see some of the pros; they’re like dancers in a storm, and the whole crowd gets caught up in it."
Kira says:
Its funny that you mentions the tavern. My father suggested that I got a job there, serving tea, ale and that kind of stuff. He said it would be a good way to meet people and ground me
Greta nodded approvingly. "Now there’s the spirit. The tavern’s not all bad. Sure, it gets rowdy sometimes, but it’s a great place to meet folks and hear all sorts of stories. Plus, the regulars aren’t too shabby, and if you’re servin’, you’ll hear gossip from every corner of Misthaven."

She leaned in conspiratorially, her voice dropping to a mock whisper. "And if nothin’ else, you’ll have me stoppin’ by to keep you company. You won’t find a more loyal customer—or a more enthusiastic drinker!"

Greta leaned back and gestured broadly. "Bow’s End Tavern is the heart of the campus after hours. Opens at six sharp, closes around eleven on class nights, and runs wild until two in the mornin’ on weekends. There’s music, games, and enough ale to make a bard sing ballads about the place."

She smirked, her tone turning fond. "Oh, and the manager there? Tulk ‘The Bulk’ Tusktooth—orc gladiator turned tavern keeper. He’s a Misthaven legend. Kind as they come, but don’t even think about crossin’ him. If you step outta line, you’ll find yourself face-first in the dirt before you can say ‘last call.’ But if you’re workin’ there, he’ll treat you right."

Greta shrugged, her grin still firmly in place. "I say give it a go. It’s honest work, and if you’re pourin’ drinks, you’ll learn more about this place—and its people—than you ever will in a classroom. Who knows? You might even like it."
Kira says:
What kind of lab work? I might do something study related.
Greta tilted her head, considering Kira’s question. "Lab work? Well... You could join the cleanup crew—wipin’ down tables, sortin’ tools, makin’ sure nobody’s left anythin’ explodin’ overnight. It’s not glamorous, but it’s important, and the professors usually take notice."

She tapped her chin, thinking. "Or you could be a specimen preparer. That’s for the alchemy and biology types. It’s a bit messy sometimes—choppin’ roots, grindin’ ingredients, or even dealin’ with magical critters—but it’s hands-on work, and some folks love that. Gives you a chance to learn while you’re doin’."

Greta leaned back in her chair, smirking. "And if you want somethin’ a bit more direct, you could volunteer as a lab partner. A lot of students need someone reliable for their projects, and the labs are always lookin’ for extra hands during experiments. You’ll learn loads, and it’s a great way to meet people who’re serious about magic."

She shrugged. "It depends on what you’re after, Kira. Whether you’re lookin’ to learn or just make a few coins, there’s somethin’ for everyone. You think you’d enjoy any of that? I don't think you will have time for all of it."
OOC:
What do you choose?

Kiraen cant hide her revoultion as the labwork is described. Being a servant or a gunnypig? No thank you.
I will go talk with Tulk in the Bow’s End Tavern.
OOC:
is Melee combat 1d8,1d8 or 1d8,1d6?
She is specialized in short blades, bigger than knives, shorter than swords. I'll call it daggers
You like working up a sweat lifting things Greta. I like it being fast. I think I'll do my cardio with the dueling club. Zinzay Thauber* was pleased with my blade work and agility. I hope that my spellwork will get up to par soon
OOC:
Zinzay Thauber is the current weapons master in the drow court, but used to be head assassin. The name is as heavy as Himmler and Göring (Hitlers top generals) but Kiraen doesn't know this yet.
