Chapter 1: The Arrival

"Stay?" Eugene was a bit floored, "Why would we stay? This hallucination needs to end. I need to get home to my wife and kids" he looked to the gathered group, were these hallucinations just acting like they weren't from here as well, to get him to feel comforted? "Where are all of you from anyways?"

Michel ends up picking an off-white shirt and a Victorian looking dark green jacket that looks like it was designed by a crappy AI on account of the number of lapels it has.
They are of inferior quality to his coat, but a lot more suited to the climate. He's definitely keeping his hat.

"I still think this isn't real and we're dreaming, and we'll just wake up whenever. Or maybe one of us is dreaming and the rest of us are just NPCs in the dream. That would make more sense than a weird shared dream..."

Mathias changes into a simple tunic and pants, held up by a similarly simple belt. He felt comfortable enough now with his powers that he can enhance his own defenses, so wearing something comfortable felt even better in these strange lands.

"Ohio," Matthias responds to Eugene. "I don't disagree that staying isn't ideal, but whether we're to suddenly wake up or find our own path home, we should plan for the worst case scenario: this is real and we might be somehow stuck here for a while." He nods to Rone, "So, earning our keep isn't a bad idea, if for no other reason than to repay their hospitality, right?" He shrugs, "At least we all seem to be in the same situation, so as long as you guys don't turn out to be a bunch of assholes or something, I figure we better watch each others' backs."

As you’re finishing up your meal, the guard who escorted you here returns. Behind him walks another short woman. She has auburn hair and wears fine robes of office. The guard pulls a chair over to your table and she hops up onto it, giving you all a smile.

"Hello, there! We get many travelers here in Finderplain, though I confess none have been as strange as you. I am Soukmaster Satla Kivarn. I’m the gnome in charge here. Well, at least I have been for the past two months. At any rate, I’d like to hear about this strange gate you seem to have come through and where you were before that. Maybe I can help you find your feet here? So to speak."

Rone was drinking and eating his share of meals as he listened to everyone's conversation. He replied to Eugene after taking a sip from his drink, "Mumbai. I agree that you think this is some sort of dream or hallucination and you are somehow unable to wake up. But I failed the cut from the weapon of those dog-like creatures. (He showed them the wound, which has now stopped bleeding) I felt pain as real as I could sense it. If it was a dream, I should have woken up from the pain."

As the guards returned with another woman who spoke and identified them as gnomes, Rone observed them curiously. When Satla finally asked the inevitable question about their origin, he stopped eating and looked around to check what others were thinking. Finally, he answered, "We came here somehow, and when we regained consciousness, there was an archway with symbols beside an obelisk. My memory is not clear, but I am certain that we are not from here. You can see how our dresses don't match yours, and what I can faintly remember is that I live in a place called Mumbai. But, once we arrived, there was two dog-like creature with rusted swords whom we had to fight before we came here."

Eugene listened as the others listed off places he was familiar with, places from his world, Ohio and Mumbai. "Missouri..." he said, right before the Gnome joined them. After her speech he looked to her, obvious distress on his face. "From what I've gathered so far, the storyline of this hallucination is that I and several others from our home, were somehow worm holed through to this place. Have you heard of any of the places we are from? Ohio, Mumbai, Missouri..." he waved his hand around the table at the others as he spoke out their home lands.

"Similar," Mathias says. "I was shopping, turned a corner and poof, I was here, picking myself up off the sand...and here is nowhere like where I came from. I'll be honest, I'm feeling pretty lost. No idea what happened, or how to get back. But the food, clothing - everything - is very appreciated. It helps. I just wish I knew where we are, and...what to do."
Mar 10, 2025 10:46 am
"None of those names ring a bell," Satla says with a shrug. "But strange things have been happening all across Golarion lately. The weather here, in particular, has been erratic. We had a big duststorm blow through just a few days ago. It's probable that the storm cleared away the area around the obelisk enough to reveal that gateway. Now, why it sucked you in and spat you out here, I can't say. But I there's a place nearby where you can find out more.

"The city of Katapesh itself is four days' ride away. It's a huge place full of people and sages from all over the world. Surely somebody there might know about your mysterious arrival. The leaders of the city, the Pactmasters themselves, are even rumored to have come here from a different world entirely."
Mar 10, 2025 11:35 am
"Well, last thing I know is that I was in a waiting room at the hospital, nodding off, and then woosh, I've face-planted into desert sand. It's probably not a bad idea to treat this as real, no matter what we think it is. Just in case it is real. I'm from Belgium, by the way."
Them having seemingly been plucked from all over the world from some very specific locations starts to make him doubt the whole dream thing.

Meanwhile, Gloria has quietly reappeared and is helping herself to whatever leftovers are left.

As Michel listen to the Soukmaster's words, he wonders about these 'Pactmasters'. Did they get here like themselves? The name sounds somewhat sinister.
Mar 11, 2025 5:14 am
Mathias nods. "Four days isn't too far, but I fear we don't have any means of transportation but our own feet. How long of a walk would it be? Or could we hire someone to take us, you think? We've already imposed enough as it is though...is there anything we can to before we leave to repay the kindness of your town?"
Mar 11, 2025 7:51 am
"There is something, in fact," Satla says with a smirk. "A caravan is leaving tomorrow morning, bound for Katapesh. The road is well-traveled, but there's always the risk of bandits or beasties attempting to interfere. I'd like you to ride with the caravan and protect it from harm. Keep it safe, and you'll get to where you need to go. I believe this arrangement will be mutually beneficial."
Mar 11, 2025 2:12 pm
Rone smiled and said, "Absolutely! We are really grateful for all this hospitality that you have provided us. We will make sure that the caravan reaches Katapesh, unharmed."
Mar 11, 2025 2:41 pm
"Bandits and beasties?" Eugene whispered under his breath. He'd been here mere hours and now was being signed up to ward off Banditry and the whole of nature. Still, he had magic in this hallucination, or dream, or whatever this was. Maybe it wouldn't be so bad.
Mar 12, 2025 12:19 am
Michel also professes his gratitude to the Souk master but has some misgiving. four days of travel and some food and clothes doesn't really seem to be worth them literally risking their lives as security guards and potentially killing some people. He makes a mental note of bringing it up to the others later when they alone.
Mar 12, 2025 8:08 am
Satla smiles widely. "Splendid! Then I'll make the necessary arrangements. You'll leave tomorrow at dawn. Until then, feel free to enjoy our town!" She gives you all a nod before hopping down from the chair and heading out.
OOC:
If there's anything specific you'd like to do with the rest of the day, let me know. If not, I'll move things along to the following morning.
Mar 12, 2025 9:07 am
Mathias shifts uncomfortably in his seat. He didn't like the idea of actively putting himself in danger, but if their best chance of getting home was getting to this city, Katapesh, then they would be exposed to such banditry anyways...perhaps it would be safer traveling in a larger group. "That seems fair," he says, "I guess we had best get some rest before then."
Mar 12, 2025 2:53 pm
Rone eyed his empty glass, "I could have asked for another drink. But that would be too impolite. They have already done a lot for us." He listened to Mathias and then smiled, "Don't worry, my friend! With your magics, we can intimidate a few more bandits."

Once the words came out of his mouth, Rone realized that he was never so....extrovert and friendly to someone who he had just met. Wait, why didn't he stop? Where was the fear and insecurity that made him silent in most social scenarios? Was he really going to boost such confidence?
Mar 13, 2025 11:11 am
"I don't know... I mean, we're probably up to the task, but risking our lives to deal with bandits and monsters, and potentially having to kill some people if push comes to shove... that seem worth more to me than what we're getting out of this deal. Plus it would be nice if we actually have some money once we arrive in... whatever it is called. Maybe we can get a better deal when we talk to the caravan people tomorrow." Michel says while he gives Gloria belly rubs.

"Anyway, I'm not tired yet. Gloria and me are going to play tourist for a while. I mean, how often do you get to walk around in an actual D&D village?"

Michel is also going to Gather Information about Katapesh (Diplomacy +7)

It isn't difficult to learn more information about Katapesh this close to the city. Sprawling across a valley of blazing-hot sand, Kataepesh is one of the most incredible and wondrous cities in all of Golarion. The City of Trade is a city of organized chaos where cash is king and commerce is the highest god. In its vast markets—both the legitimate bazaars and the seedier Nightstalls—merchants and buyers of a hundred different kinds mingle with the human majority. They say anything you can imagine is for sale somewhere in Katapesh, if you can find it, and if you can afford it!

Eugene took Michel's words to heart. He may have to kill people? If this was a hallucination is was both wondrous and dark. If this was somehow not a hallucination, and instead he was gated to another world, what were the implications of his presence, was it ok to just kill these bandits. It would be self defense, but the law was never that straight forward where he came from.

"I think I am going to see if I can find a map, maybe a book on local customs and traditions. When in Rome"
OOC:
I am not sure, but I don't think we ever found our characters starting equipment right? we just have our spellbooks, spellcasting equipment, etc? And we don't have any coin that we would have had left over? If not then I am going to try and find somewhere that I can maybe make a quick couple coins to buy a map, or book, maybe a library?
