Reflecting on the ideas that are bouncing here, I think "medic" (to sustain scrounging) would be a far more useful talent than "shooter" (which might not even come up that often if we're careful).

tibbius says:
... maybe the Arcane talent works only inside a break ...
You can always try. :)

To use Arcane you have to say what source of magical energy you are channelling, and there is very little magic in our world. :(
tibbius says:
... they're kind of like almost envied / feared by other nations ...
That could be an angle, sure. They could also be the result of something 'we' did.

Who is 'we'? America?
tibbius says:
... if a break happened in some remote place, why wouldn't the Cloud already have escaped? ...
You can decide the scope of your enterprise. You bring out a certain amount of loot, and that says 'how well you are doing', but the rules don't say anything about how much each piece is worth, does a successful run net enough to replace your car, or does it pay for your private supersonic jet? You choose.

If we want to be able to get anywhere we can arrange that, if we want to be mainly local we can say that is the case.

Maybe you have the ability to predict where these things will happen ahead of time and start heading there? Sorta like tornado or earthquake warnings? Could be tornadoes or earthquakes are your early warning?

If regional: Are we in the tornado belt or earthquake area? Has it always been like this or is this a result of the breaks in the area?
tibbius says:
... Do breaks grow over time until closed? ...
I don't know. Maybe none of us know yet?

If you take Shooter there will be things that need to be shot. If you take Medic, there will be the need for medics... et cetera.

The Medic Talent can be compensated for with more Medkits, and the Shooter Talent with more shooting (or more hiding).

The rules don't say, so we can decided. Do we say, upfront, what we are taking into the break, or do we —Blades in the Dark style— merely say how much we are taking and then, when we find we need something, say that that is one of the things we brought (up to our chosen limit)?

You can always pre-stipulate anything that you definitely always bring, but leave the rest for when you know you need it. ("I still have some 'load' to spare, so I have another Medkit in here somewhere.")
Feb 27, 2025 4:41 pm
OK Fiona is now a Colt. I chose Techie and I will be bringing a MedKit.

I like the idea that we are a civilians working for an NGO, the Institute, and we operate in a single region. Maybe the Institute has teams elsewhere -- not relevant. We are tolerated by our local government for a few reasons -- us going in costs them nothing, we can mobilize and get in much faster than the government can often respond, but probably most importantly, the institute is wealthy and powerful and shares some of its research and profit with the country.

I don't actually care what region or country we're in, but we can decide that if it becomes important.

I am fine with either speficying items in advance or going with BitD style. But we have to declare our Speed in advance! So if I decide I'm going in Fast, I can have only 3 slots of backpack and 2 on my person. That's what I'll opt for on our first mission. But perhaps we can decide to exceed those limits and change our speed while inside a break, in case we want to slow down to be able to haul back lots of loot.

I'm looking forward to playing. I think my character "Arthur" is ready to go.

Drgwen says:

Cool, we will use that as a basis and define more from there, as it becomes relevant.
Drgwen says:

As soon as we need to deal with the government it will become relevant; as soon as we need to deal with the locals it will become relevant; as soon as we need to describe what part of our world connects to what in the other it may become relevant, in as much as it will define, for example, if we have skyscrapers where we are (absent input from the players I rolled some dice and got 'skyscraper' vs 'hills and caves', so, unless we choose to change that, we are 'not rural'. :)
Drgwen says:

We can always go with a mix. I do this anyway in most games, BitD just formalised it. Define as much as you need then fill in the remaining stuff when it becomes relevant.

In Blades is can be a bit of a head-scratcher when players say they have armor when it was not mentioned before (even on previous hits), but that is something we just have to live with and try not to contradict in earlier character description. Armor is not retroactive, you don't get back HP from previous hits when you declare it, those hits were clearly in unarmored areas, or something.
Drgwen says:

Yes. You say how much you are carrying when you enter. This says how fast you can move and react. That is the amount you brought with you, this time, it does not define anything about your character's physicality.
Drgwen says:
... we can decide to exceed those limits and change our speed ...
Yes, if you pick up more stuff you will be slower, if you drop everything you will be faster. Update the sheet accordingly.
Drgwen says:
... haul back lots of loot ...
Up to 8 loot each (it you empty your pack of everything else), unless you make plans to handle more (bring a vehicle or (find) a wheelbarrow?).

Cool.

Note that the Background is not a 'checkbox', those are suggestions and it asks you to 'write the specifics on the line above'. Mention a bit about your background (like that you are ex-military not military, for instance).

A little bit about your personality would be welcome, too.

I have tweaked the Character Sheet Template if you want to take a look. Mainly I moved the Scars away from the Attributes, they are not tied to the Stats as they are in Dungeon World, and it is confusing having them marked there. I also removed a bit of loose spacing. Feel free to copy/paste (from a Quote) if you want to, its easier now while there is not much else in you sheet. :)
Feb 28, 2025 5:39 am
Question for @vagueGM: you ask us to copy/paste from a Quote, rather than simply opening the sheet above and clicking "Create a Character" then submitting it to the game. Why?

Drgwen says:

Because there is no need to create a new character, your character list can quickly get messy. If you prefer to make a new one we can do through the admin of removing (and maybe deleting) old characters, submitting new characters, approving characters....

Simply copy/pasting the new text seems the easiest to me, so I was 'teaching tips and tricks for the site'. :) With old players I would just have said '... maybe update your sheet' and left the details up to you.
Feb 28, 2025 5:49 am
And, when I say 'maybe update' I mean maybe. If you want to keep what you have, that is fine too.

There are still two ways of doing HP and Strain (and XP/Level). You can pick the one you like or try both for a while and delete the spare later.

Oh ok! That makes sense, thank you! And thanks as well for the tips and tricks! I am still a noob here and appreciate it.

@lemagne Have you followed along with what has been happening to our characters in Skyscrapers & ... Groundscrapers? [link]? Or do you need a summary?

We will engineer a way to get your character into the story right away, even if we have to stretch the narrative a bit.
Mar 11, 2025 4:44 pm
are we in a hurry? I can read it. skyscraper leaning 45 degrees - investigating. Some previous "break" adventure is referenced for Fiona & Arthur. I didn't think of that aspect for my character.

lemagne says:
... are we in a hurry? ...
Not at all. Mainly I don't want to keep you waiting, so we are not going to bother 'finding the best time' in the fiction to bring in a new character. But that is easy to do with this setup. Probably just a radio message for Arthur and Fiona to "come back to the portal/break/gateway because Herman has arrived on-site".
lemagne says:
... I can read it. ...
By all means. Or we can summarise, but we would not bother summarizing if you already had read it. :)
lemagne says:
... skyscraper leaning 45 degrees - investigating. ...
Pretty much.

The people in the skyscraper apparently-voluntarily left the build to enter the dark caves it had crashed into, and then were transformed into goblins.

The adventurers then encountered and shot a salamander on a glowing mushroom, but that seems to be coming back to life despite the bullet in the brain that killed it.

Sometimes I don't even know why I bother, these summaries are inevitably short.
lemagne says:
... Some previous "break" adventure ... I didn't think of that aspect for my character. ...
By the rules, if you are 'level 1' (called Colt), you have been in one of these breaks before. If you want to be level 0 (one fewer Attributes and no Talent, yet) you could be a noob, or even be someone from the building found in the caves?

We should make this decision based on what we think would be most fun. We can make any choices work in the fiction.
Mar 11, 2025 5:10 pm
ok I imagine I will get caught up on the reading today. Did Fiona/Arthur actually have rift adventure or did you guys just retcon it? and if so can i get in on the retcon or should we come up with a different historical adventure? (I'd like to stay a colt b/c loss aversion)
Mar 11, 2025 5:15 pm
lemagne says:
... Did Fiona/Arthur actually have rift adventure or did you guys just retcon it? ...
Technically not a 'retcon', but yes, we just said it happened, and left it at that. We can allude to it as it becomes relevant in the story, and there have been inconsequential hints.
lemagne says:
... can i get in on the retcon or should we come up with a different historical adventure? ...
Smoothest solution would be if you were part of that same one (which might be the only other one, we (the players) don't know yet). That way they know you and we don't have to spend time building trust. This also makes it easiest to get you into the story, as suggested above.
lemagne says:
... I'd like to stay a colt b/c loss aversion ...
Of course. No worries.

I will noodle on it. -- btw so far this is great fun.
