The Black Wyrm of Brandonsford

Seeing that no one has a rope, or is willing to part with it if they do, Wren sighs. She instead asks for someone to help boost her up to the window sill, where she will perch and offer a hand down to the two inside to help them up and over. If the giant sees her and approaches, however, she slides back out of the window and runs away into the woods!
OOC:
First, do I need to make a roll to climb up to the sill to offer a hand to those still inside? Second, would my helping hand remove or reduce the difficulty of climbing out? I'm doing my best over here!

OOC:
When I update the sketch I'll put Gann in the right spot.

Wren, there's no one nearby to boost you! Without help, you can move to the window and then climb up onto the sill this round if you make a DEX Save. If you fail, it'll take your next turn to climb in if that's what you want to do. (No roll required.)

Nessa, any last thoughts before we switch the camera to the action inside and the giant?

OOC:
Is Sable able to grab the Brother's stuff? Die of Fate...
1-2: no
3-4: yes, but only one of the two items
5-6: yes, both the pack and the quarterstaff

Rolls

Die of Fate for getting the goods - (1d6)

(1) = 1

Sadly not, Sable!

Nessa, any last thoughts before we switch the camera to the action inside and the giant?
Nope, nothing I can really do for the moment.

Unable to snatch a single thing, some prowler he is today, Sable follows Brother Dirk under the bed, pushing him forward when he overtakes him.

He pushes them to the farthest back and side closest to the window. Then he takes out his spring-loaded trap to put in front of them in case the giant decides to push his hand in to grab them.

Once the trap is set up, he keeps one eye on the giant and slightly turns to the rescued man.

"Marchguard is outside. Do you have anything to defend yourself or reach that window on you?"

He looks over the man to see if he still has a cord or something wrapped around his robe.

As Wren jumps at the tall window sill and tries to muscle her way up onto it, Brother Dirk and Sable take cover beneath the giant’s enormous bed.

Brother Dirk
"N-no!" The young clergyman says when he’s asked if he has items to defend himself or climb on his person.

"Seminary did not include skill with arms or dangerous scaling, sir!"

Sable does see as he pulls out his trap, however, that the man’s rough-spun brown robe is indeed belted by a length of rope! Passing around the brother’s waist twice and elaborately knotted at the two ends, the cincture must be at least ten feet in length!

The Giant
In the center of the over-sized cottage and high above the two desperate men, the giant’s brow furrows when Gann shouts from outside.

"WHO WHERE WHAT NOW?" he bellows at the slightly muffled voice beyond his door. Heavy footfalls resound as the huge brute stomps to his door and turns the wooden latch that holds it closed. As that enormous door opens, the smelly, scraggly-bearded giant is revealed to Gann. And as the giant peers down at him, he frowns.

"NOT MARP…BARD. ANOTHER GOBLIN! WHAT WANTS MY GOBLIN! NO NO. ONE MORE FOR THE POT, I SAY!"

The set of the giant’s broad shoulders is such that Gann thinks he is about to reach down for him…
Some distance away, at the western treeline, Nessa watches, her added greenery hopefully masking her presence…
OOC:
Rolling a Die of Fate to see how distracted the giant is by the calling of the Marchguard outside…

1-3: Not distracted
4-5: Distracted, hesitates
6: Changes focus to the voice outside

Lucky roll for Sable and Dirk!

Nessa, please make a Willpower Save. I’ll set up the new combat round in a moment.

Rolls

Die of Fate (Giant’s Distraction Level) - (1d6)

(6) = 6

OOC:
BTW Wren, please add a that DEX Save when you get a moment. And Sable, it’ll require your *next* turn (Round 3) to set the trap.

Round 3
PCs act in the order of their choosing <<<
Dirk acts
Giant acts
OOC:
Summing up — need a DEX Save and a WIL Save from Wren and Nessa respectively for last round. If Sable wants to set the trap, that will be his action for the turn. Gann, you might be the target of a grabby Giant later in the round.

Map upcoming coming later today.

Wren attempts to scramble up to the window sill... but fails! Tumbling back to the ground, she stands back up, dusts herself off, and loud-whispers through the window, saying, "Get outta there!"

OOC:
You have a benevolent GM, Wren. The failure (in Round 2) simply means it takes a bit of extra time to climb to the windowsill. So, in Round 3 (now), you can climb to the perch with no roll. It will simply consume your action.

Sable is about to take the time to set the trap when he clocks the elaborately tied rope around Brother Dirk's waist.

"We're going to need that," he mutters and jerks his thumb to the window. He beckons the man to untie his belt and runs towards the window, crouching down to boost the man up. Once the dead weight is out, the prowler may have time to grab the pack before leaving if the giant stays distracted enough...

I always say you are just the super bestest
Wren huffs and puffs and pulls herself up to the window sill. It ain't pretty, but she gets there, eventually. Now, she hopes, she'll be able to lend a hand to them if and when they try to escape.

"Stop!" Gann shouts decisively at the giant. "You could eat me, I can’t stop you. But I promise I’ll take at least one finger if you try." Even at one third scale, Gann’s longsword is a dangerous looking knife and hopefully enough to give the creature pause.

Gann quickly produces a bundle from his pack and tosses it down before stepping back just far enough that the giant would need to contend with Sable’s trip wire before reaching him.

"You want food? That’s enough to feed me for three days. Meat, cheese, bread, surely enough for one good meal. And I’ll bring more, maybe pigs or sheep, if we can be friends. Just don’t take another step or the deal is off."

He leaves a moment to let it sink in, then adds. "Go ahead, take it. I’m Gann. What’s your name, friend?"

Saving.

Rolls

WILL vs 12 - (d20)

(10) = 10

Jul 11, 2025 5:43 am
OOC:
Gann, please make a WIL Save! (per the rules on p62 Willpower is "used for saves to persuade, deceive, interrogate, intimidate, charm, provoke, manipulate spells, etc." Failure will mean the giant isn't interested in your offer, or dissuaded by your threat. Good luck, sir!

Inside the cottage, as Gann makes his brave gambit, Dirk and Sable run for the window and see Wren gain the ledge from the outside. The Brother unties the thick cords that belt his waist as he goes, and has them in hand as he's easily able to climb up to the window sill with the help of his two rescuers. When he's on the ledge with Wren, the brother holds one end of the rope and tosses the other back down to Sable, who is still inside, standing on the floor.
OOC:
With help from the rope and perhaps Wren, Sable can escape next round with no save...

Worry might line Nessa's pretty brow as she half-crouches some distance from the giant's abode, in the tall grass. It might be concern for her friends, or for whatever Gann is attempting with the giant himself, facing it down... either way a rustle and gibbering to the girl's left seizes her attention.

There, evidently unaware of her presence, she sees a pair of small creatures, no more than three or four feet in height. They are wearing scraps of mismatched leather armor and carry small but sharp weapons--light spears, knives, a nasty-looking cleaver. They have gray-green skin and devious-looking yellow eyes, narrowed as they banter back and forth, watching the drama at the cottage unfold.

It is not the common tongue they speak... yet Nessa finds she can understand them!

"This be good! He get squashed flat!"

"Yes! Yes! Then we take his hard skin once giant peels him!"
OOC:
These two are about 15-20' north of you, Nessa. You still have your action at the top of Round 3.
