The Black Wyrm of Brandonsford

Nessa, as quietly as possible, retrieves the wand Vivian had given her from her backpack. She should really keep the damn thing on hand.

OOC:
Also I had intended myself a bit to the right, both to pull attention away from the side with the window, and to avoid getting landed on if the giant does trip.
Jul 11, 2025 7:12 pm
OOC:
That last note is an important one. :) I’ll note Gann being more to the right.

Update coming.

This time when Nessa’s slim hand wraps around the delicate wand, a sensation surges through her body. The instrument does not contain magic; rather it would help her channel such arcane energies, lending her strength and skill.
The Giant
"I’LL HAVE THAT!" the giant rumbles as Gann throws down his pack and makes his offer, "AND YOU FOR THE POT TO BOOT! HOLD STILL, LITTLE GOBBIE!"

And like that, the huge oaf is striding forward, after the Marchguard and straight towards the trip-line set by Sable earlier!
OOC:
Stand by!

Gann’s hopes that the giant would get tangle-footed in the low-strung line are dashed when the brute’s second footfall comes down on the rope, mashing it underfoot without even seeing it. The huge and hungry lummox then grins a mouthful of broken teeth, laughing as he takes another stride that looms him over his target. Balling a meaty fist, he tries to pound the guardsman to the ground with a violent overhand blow!
OOC:
So the giant did not trip, and the trap has been ‘sprung’ — it’s no long a trip hazard.
The Giant

Gann is only taking 1 damage here, though, which I suspect will be covered by his armor!

Rolls

Giant’s DEX Save (8) - (1d20)

(4) = 4

Is the trap still functional? 4-6 = yes - (1d6)

(3) = 3

Giant’s Unarmed Damage - (1d8)

(1) = 1

Round 4
PCs act in the order of their choosing <<<
Dirk acts
Giant acts
OOC:
Everyone is up!
Jul 11, 2025 8:54 pm
OOC:
Are the two goblins(?) doing anything?
Jul 11, 2025 9:23 pm
OOC:
Gann’s probably going to continue making bad decisions. Though I would like to know what those goblins are up to first!

I can’t help but notice the Giant attacked with his bare hand right after I threatened to get myself a finger. If I go for an attack now, is there a way I could make that happen?
Jul 12, 2025 1:34 am
OOC:
The little boogers are watching the unfolding scene from cover, at least for the moment. Only Nessa is aware of their presence.

Regarding the finger-lop, it won’t be easy. The mechanics of Cairn are such that you need to burn through HP before doing physical damage, but I’ll play ball. If you can score more than half damage with your sword, I’ll allow you to take a finger-tip if you can then pass a STR Save…

OOC:
One turn to grab the priest's stuff and then one turn to exit?
Jul 12, 2025 2:27 am
OOC:
Sable -- mmmm, that would be two turns, or possibly three. On the second turn I'd ask for a DEX Save. Success would see escape; failure would mean you need the third turn to exit. And that's provided you have help from the others / rope.
Jul 12, 2025 1:36 pm
OOC:
Sable -- looking at the map again, actually... two turns would do it.
Jul 12, 2025 4:11 pm
OOC:
Oddly specific question, but you described the weather as favorable when we set out in the morning. Is this still the case? As in, is the sun shining?
Jul 12, 2025 9:00 pm
Sable takes a quick look back at the pack and considers running for it, but as he sees the giant has broken his trap instead of tripping it, he decides it is better for everyone if they get away as quickly as possible. The sooner they are gone, the sooner his nephew can run as well. He takes the proffered rope and climbs up as quickly as possible to join Wren and Brother Dirk outside.

Gann got lucky, and his armor absorbs the glancing impact and deflects the bits of rock and dirt kicked up from the giants hand slamming the ground.

Acting on instinct, still angry from the constant harassment from the fey, Gann turns and does his best to make the giant pay for everything that’s happened to him over the last day. He grips his sword in both hands and brings it down on the nearest of the massive sausage fingers.
OOC:
Thanks for the explanation on the amputation attempt. It makes sense you’d need to burn through HP first, so I appreciate the benevolent ruling!

I’d like to also use my movement to put some distance between us this round, but I’ll let you narrate the result of the roll first.

Rolls

Sword damage - (1d10)

(9) = 9

Strength vs 12, if needed - (1d20)

(5) = 5

With help from the rope and the stout brother on the other end of it, Sable exits the building empty-handed (save for Dirk!), and in short order joins the clergyman and potentially the river runner in the grass outside the giant's hovel.

At the front of the building, bright red blood has sprayed and a massive fingertip lies twitching on the ground as the giant howls in pain and hops from foot to foot, holding his maimed finger-stump.

"FINGERRRRR! MY FINGGGEEEEERRRRRR!" he wails, no, bellows.

Marchguard steel is sharp, no one can doubt, as Gann's blow parted thicky and warty giant skin, as well as muscle and bone without difficulty.
OOC:
Minus one finger! Moving?

And ayep, weather-wise I believe it was sunny and breezy.
Jul 13, 2025 1:05 am
Wren spent her time and focus helping up first Dirk and then Sable. One Sable reached the sill, she turned and lowered herself down, dropping to the ground. She gathers her pack, which she had set down (she already has her armor), and makes a run for the edge of the wood.
OOC:
I assume that means she is running toward Nessa?
Jul 13, 2025 5:21 am
"Put that in your pot, brute!" Gann shouts back as he runs around the right side of the house. "Follow me and you might just lose another."
OOC:
If I were just a bit to the right as we discussed, I think I can just make it into the little corner on the northeast side of the bit where the chimney sticks out of the cottage. Gann is trying to break line of sight twice, so even if the giant comes around the corner of the cottage it won’t be immediately clear where Gann went.
Jul 13, 2025 7:11 am
OOC:
Aye, Wren. Here's the latest rough sketch.

I think Gann can use his movement, and Nessa has not yet acted.

OOC:
I suppose I should note that the trip-wire trap has been sprung.
