Fiona gets a sour look on her face as she studies the bodies. She says, "Well, this is unpleasant. These people died at each other's hands I think. Literally. They tore each other apart with their bare hands."
Mar 31, 2025 12:52 am
"Are they still moving?" Arthur asks. He chuckles nervously. "Maybe I watch too many horror movies."
Mar 31, 2025 1:01 am
"They are really most sincerely dead," she says. "No zombies here. Well, as far as I can tell. Having never studied a zombie, I can't be certain. They could have a dormant phase in which they are indistinguishable from a corpse. So, I suppose, yes, they could be zombies."

You did spend a little while studying the salamander that came back from the dead, though most of your time was taken up with the glowing mushrooms. You did determine that the salamander's regenerative healing factor was not directly linked to proximity to the mushrooms since it still healed while away from them and in the dark.

That seems more like a property of the salamander —you know 'normal' ones can regrow tails, and possibly limbs— so, hopefully that tendency to come back to life does not extend to these people... though, on the other hand, since the salamander looked like it was healing quite well, maybe that would be a good thing for these poor souls?

In order to know what is going on, you follow the sound of fighting. Keen as you are to meet a butterfly elf, you are to be disappointed, those sounded pretty, but what you see as you round a corner has nothing pretty about it. A giant ... thing with many, many legs, is rearing up, over the heads of a bunch of short people, you may have suspected 'children' if it were not for the misshapen forms and over-large heads... and the crude spears.

One of the short people —these are probably the 'goblins' your companions told you of— turns and shouts an angry-sounding admonishment at you when your light falls on their tableau. You can not understand a word of it.

Arthur raises his .30 toward the big leggy thing. Is it more like a centipede or like a spider? He aims for what might be its nerve center, depending on shape.

"Should I kill it?"
Apr 1, 2025 3:02 pm
Fiona sighs, takes out her many tissue samples from her kit, and is unsurprised to see they have grown to fill the petri dishes. She cuts pieces out and places each one in a wound on the bodies, hoping to resurrect these people. After all, the salamander did not return from the dead as a zombie, but as a natural living thing. Perhaps here, in the break, it is possible for this to save these people’s lives.

She’s bummed about losing the samples though.

Herman says loudly and as calmly as he can, "Lets back away for a minute and think this through", while at the same time taking measured, careful steps backward.

The shouty goblin looks relieved when you back away and take your light with you, it turns back to the fight, just in time to pay the price for its intention and get its head bitten off by the mandibles of the horrible, many-legged thing. Too many legs for a spider!

Given how the sample cells grew, so long as you keep some of each you may not end up losing anything... not that you can judge this since this is the only time you have done this.

Any extensive science on the bodies will take time, time that you might not have.
OOC:
You can roll Techie (presumably +Insight) to see how well it goes (though the results may only materialise later, after you have left, unless you take the time to Rest here).
If you hurry and smear some samples on the bodies and join the others, treat it as a Serious Disadvantage -2 [rules].
If you leave the others to do their thing with the fight, but don't take the time to do meticulous science (which could advance the Cloud of Woe as per Resting), treat is as a Disadvantage -1.
If you want to roll without a Disadvantage, then it will take long enough that every else can Rest or Scrounge (after dealing with the fight if they want to (the fight can be far enough away that you can, possibly, stay out of it)).

Herman projects his voice, "Art, ok yeah, shoot the bug thing cos, once it kills the goblins, we will be its next snack! Lets hope that makes the goblins friendly!
Apr 1, 2025 5:12 pm
OOC:
Is there any downside here for Fiona turning to join the fight immediately AND THEN spending the long period of time trying to revive these people? The fight will likely last less than a minute, after all... And those goblins are probably transformed humans too, so if she's gonna save lives, killing that bug more quickly, before it eats more goblins, could do so as well.

Arthur pops a cap at the centipede-ish thing.
OOC:
Obvious risk: hitting a goblin. Worse risk: hitting Herman? Not-so-great: missing (and possibly enraging the centipede).

Rolls

+Prowess - (2d6+1)

(34) + 1 = 8

- Arthur -

The centipede flinches as ichor sprays from the point your bullet strikes. The goblin's crude spears were unable to reach past its legs effectively, but you wounded it... But how much?
OOC:
Roll for Damage. Which is 1d6 unless your weapon says otherwise.
• On a 1-2 you do indeed make it angry and it charges you, and bites (at) you. (You can roll another attack and avoid the bite on a 10+, you both take damage on a 7-9.)
• On a 3-4 you make it very angry, it charges you, but is slowed by the wound and you get a chance to take another pop at it before it gets to you, maybe you can kill it in time.
• On a 5-6 you make it scared and it flees, it may die off-screen, or you can chase it and finish it.
• If one attack scores more than a 6 (7 or more (remember you can add Strain to any roll)) you take it out and impress the goblins.

You can probably narrate the outcomes based on the damage roll. Herman can join in.

OOC:
Let's see what happens here!

Rolls

.30 damage - (1d6)

(6) = 6

Apr 1, 2025 6:10 pm
Ok, Herman will try to shoot the thing with his
OOC:
I assume
loaded 9mm Glock clone. (
OOC:
since that is what the basic handgun class teaches you to shoot with)
. He passed the final test to draw and hit something at 10m (that was when he was 14).

Rolls

shooting the giant bug - (2d6)

(23) = 5

Arthur lets out breath he had been holding in a small gasp. He's trained for combat, but a centipedal monster is truly scary.

The centipede thrashes backward, writhes on the ground briefly, and scurries away.

Your shots ricochet off the centipede's chitinous armor as it scurries away, it lets out a screech of anger and pain which echoes back from the invisible walls of the cavern.

The goblins chase after their attacker.

What do you do?
OOC:
I know early PbtAs made a big deal to the GM about 'Make your move but don't speaks its name'. I always treated this as '... don't just speak its name' rather than 'never'. Sometimes, in addition to seeing the outcome in the fiction, it helps for the players to understand which GM Move is being made, (or to be reminded that Moves like 'Take away their stuff' are in the rules).

In this case, the consequence for the 5 is that you learn ('reveal an unwelcome truth', maybe) that the centipedes have more armor than expected (even I did not know it was that tough:). (And a little more that you may discover later.)

Herman lets out his breath in relief, thinking, "no harm no foul", re-holsters the gun, and says, "Let's follow those goblin dudes!"
OOC:
How many goblins are there anyway?
