Yokgrumli points to the two doors flanking the main. "Heads," he explains. "As fer idle hands, if any of you have naw-ti-cal experience and the ears to listen, y'er welcome to help. But, we got the crew, and you jus' have to stay out of their way. Speaking of which."

He indicates the main room you had passed through. "That's where me crew sleeps at night, so I humbly request you not bother them. Otherwise, during the day y'er free to roam there or topside.

"We're stocked for the trip, but I ask respect in taking meals at the designated times, which be sun-up and sun-down, or whenever I feel like it. If you got our own meals, or like to fish from a moving boat, fine."

"Understood, captain."

Parallel heads back to the deck to take in the sight of the island as they depart as well as observe the crew.

After listening to the captain's tour, Tordek returns to their quarters and stows his gear and armor on an unclaimed hammock. He then searches the ship until he finds the captain and approaches him. Good day, Captain! I would like to submit myself for duty!"

Yokgrumli grins with yellowed teeth. "Well, honored kinsman!" he says with a bit of glee. "How about you get on that windlass and show these boys what real work looks like?" The dwarf motions to one of the engines where some crew, 2 humans and an elf, are bringing in the chain cable.

Rhodrick followed quietly behind the rest of his new crewmates after leaving the harbormaster's shack. His eyes grew a little more distant and his thoughts drew inward this close to the sounds and smells of the sea. Each creak of cable and lap of waves against the hulls sounded like a homecoming and a dirge.

He boards the Red Cutter and accompanies the rest with Captain Yokgrumli to their assigned berth. Instead of dropping his seabag in the chartered cabin, he leaves it to the side of the hatch in the crew quarters.

After hearing Tordek's offer and the response he lifts his knuckles to his brow and gives a quick "Aye Skip!" He moves to help with pulling in the mooring lines while the anchor is hauled up.

Haesh takes a look inside of the room with the hammocks and decides to not leave his belongings in the room. He follows Parallel up topside and quietly tries to stay out of the way of the workers while waiting for the ship to leave port.

Tordek immediately jumps at the opportunity to earn his place on the ship and gets to work doing anything that looks like it could use an extra set of hands.

The crew completes their preparations quickly, thanks to your assistance, and the sails fill with the breeze coming off the island as though Eglar itself was bidding you farewell. The sea is relatively calm at this hour and there is a favorable wind. You feel the ship slip across the waves, the creak of rope and timber keeping time in your passage.

Rhodrick and Tordek each receive appreciative nods from a few deckhands, before the crew separate to their designated stations. The lookout ascends to the crow's nest, somewhat surprised at the presence of an owl above him. The navigator sets the course and the Red Cutter is away. Captain Yokgrumli transfers the wheel to the helmsman and, after giving a casual glance across the ship, enters into his quarters.

The days pass somewhat slowly. The crew seem reluctant to talk to you, perhaps under orders to not bother the chartered passengers. Rhodrick and Tordek are given a measure of respect for their seamanship, and for the most part your group is not bothered. Meals are offered to you, stale bread and fish, with a bit of fish oil for flavor. Most of the crew take their meals topside, while the captain dines in his office. At night, your quarters are cramped, even after deciding who among the 6 of you gets to use the hammocks and who sleeps on the floor.

It is the fourth day of travel, and the sea is a featureless plain of dark blue water stretching to the horizon. This morning there is a cold mist, and the crew is unusually quiet. All hands are at their stations, but quiet. Even the rope and wood of the Red Cutter falls silent in apparent vigil. No one looks at you, nor do they address you at this time, seemingly intent on the surrounding fog. Captain Yokgrumli is by the helmsman, eyes on the water and hands on the railing as though feeling the waves underneath the ship.
OOC:
If you've only eaten the fish stew from The Arcadian Rose, it is depleted now (and likely best that you finished it earlier before it spoiled too much). You still have rations and whatever the crew offers.

What do you wish to do now?

Over the past four days Jandral has been trying to build up a rapport with the captain with casual conversation about seafaring and sea-trading.

Jandral isn't indifferent about today's serious mood, however, and tries not to bother the captain too much. Still, he can't help his curiosity and joins the captain at the railing. "What's with this mist, Captain? Jandral inquiries in a low voice. "Is there cause for concern?"

Golwen is sensitive to the moods of those around him. Although he remains quiet and out of the way, he is vigilant. He casually leans against the railing of the vessel and makes every attempt at giving off an air of relaxed calm. Inwardly, however, he is taking note of exactly where each nearby crew member is and their movements. If trouble comes it is they who will most likely recognize it before he.

With a thought he sends Rhevia skyward to get a bird's eye view of the situation. The situation has the Elf a little bit on edge. He is out of his element here. In the past, inmoments such as these, he can't recall ever regretting having 360 degrees of awareness. Thank you, friend. Keep the watch for us. Alert me to any disturbance, in water or mist.

Captain Yokgrumli nods to Jandral. In the past few days, the sorcerer discovered that the dwarf has been master of the Red Cutter for nearly 10 years, running cargo and passengers all across the Sea of Shadows. Together with his first mate, a thin and bald elf named Vulas with gold eyes and an overbite, Yokgrumli knows many shipping lanes and has visited practically all the islands and their settlements. In fact, the captain did visit Jyehm Cay and the village of Whitburn, but found it to be nothing of consequence with nary the proper facilities for visiting sailors.

"Always," whispers the dwarf in answer to Jandral's question. He speaks quietly, as though his voice will interfere with his other senses. "Bad things live in the mist. Keep quiet and keep your eyes and ears open."

For Golwen, the crew eventually came to understand that the owl was a companion, and made no further comment about the strange bird being a bad omen. At the wizard's behest, Rhevia takes to the sky, wings taking it silently into the fog.
OOC:
Perception checks may be made by anyone interested, including Rhevia, but are made with disadvantage due to the oppressive mist.

Tordek has been quick to help the crew over the last few days, and any time spent not on deck has been spent meticulously inspecting his armor and weapons for signs of wear. He is currently wandering the deck, taking care to not distract the crew, while remaining on watch himself.
OOC:
Can't delete the roll for some reason.

Rolls

Perception - (1d20+5)

(7) + 5 = 12

Perception - (1d20+5)

(20) + 5 = 25

Perception - (1d20+5)

(14) + 5 = 19

OOC:
My perception check below.

Question: Since Rhevia makes perception checks based on hearing or vision with advantage, should I roll it straight? Cancelling the disadvantage of the mist?

Rolls

Perception for Golwen at Disadvantage - (1D20+4, 1D20+4)

1D20+4 : (20) + 4 = 24

1D20+4 : (4) + 4 = 8

Haesh has been quiet during his time on the Red Cutter. He tends to keep to himself and stays on the upper deck. Most who come near him notice that his eyes seem to be lost in thought of some memory from long ago.

During the night he sleeps on the floor with no issue. While sleeping he uses his belongings as a pillow while keeping his hammer wrapped up in his arms.

Haesh takes no special interest in the coming fog.

Rhodrick continued to assist the crew whenever he saw an opportunity the past few days. He kept an open ear for any interesting rumor while on deck or in the mess, but maintained his reserved demeanor from the docks.

This morning he stands amidships intently scanning through the mist and the fog.

Rolls

Perception - Disadvantage - (1d20+5, 1d20+5)

1d20+5 : (8) + 5 = 13

1d20+5 : (8) + 5 = 13

Nov 22, 2016 3:47 am
OOC:
Correct, if you have advantage on Perception, it cancels out the disadvantage. I just took the first roll.
Rhodrick made small talk with the crew during his time working; nothing fancy, just the typical tradesman talk that all sailors hold in common. One of the hands, eager perhaps to share some secret, whispered to his shipmates that while he was in Eglar, he heard from someone who heard it from someone else that a real metallic dragon was spotted in Barad Sari.

No one sees anything, straining your senses against the mist.

Caution!

No sooner had the telepathic thought insisted itself upon Golwen, than he was on his feet and moving toward the Captain. Despite the urgency he made every effort to seem nonchalant. He slowed his breath and measured his steps against the racing of his heart.

Approaching the Captian, he leaned against the railing next to him and spoke softly, "Captain there is something very large in our path. Without making too much noise or raising alarm, I suggest you turn this vessel as sharply as possible and with all reasonable haste."
Nov 22, 2016 8:59 pm
Yokgrumli tilts his head, assessing Golwen's words and wondering how this elf can see things the others can't. "How large?" asks the captain. "Can't rightly turn if I don't know how far. Unless you be wantin' to go back home?"

"I can't give you all the information you might like, for I don't have it to give. But it is a vessel. A large one. We would only need to veer a few degrees in either direction to avoid it, but it is imperative that we do so. Now."

He adds in, almost as an afterthought, "I know not if it is ally or foe, merchant or pirate. I only know it is there and it is large, but not so wide as to be difficult to avoid."

Standing right next to Yokgrumli, Jandral listens to this exchange with some measure of alarm but waits to hear what the captain decides to do.
