Episode 1: A Helping Hand

Tordek is now at the doorway on the main deck, standing with Parallel.

Haesh makes his way carefully across the deck to the port side where he sees the grappling hook. When he reaches it, he notices three barbed hooks and spears further down the hull, embedded like those on the starboard side, all with taut ropes into the water.

Jandral's Fire Bolt strikes one of the five hooks embedded into the starboard hull, the arcane flame fighting against the torrential rain. With a burst of smoke, the rope snaps and disappears into the water. Now that Jandral is closer, he can see that some of the hooks look like barbed daggers or spears that were thrust into the ship, serving as anchor points.

Rhodrick moves to the starboard rail and sees the same thing, as well as Jandral's successful cutting of one of the ropes.

On the starboard side, an aqua-skinned hand breaks the surface of the water and grasps one of the ropes still attached to the ship. Jandral and Rhodrick see a finned form emerge, with a fish-like face filled with razor-sharp teeth, pulling itself up the hull.

On the port side, Haesh sees two similar piscine forms begin to climb.
OOC:
Haesh, if you wish to cut the rope on the grappling hook, make an attack roll. Golwen has a free action to take before we start to get into the thick of things.
Dec 6, 2016 10:20 pm
OOC:
Im assuming Golwen sees the same thing off the starboard side.
Seeing the hands break the water as creatures begin their ascent up the ropes, Golwen glances upward in time to see firebolts sizzling through the damp air. Without waiting another moment, he adds his own talents to those of Jandral attempting to burn the leaches from the skin of the ship.

Rolls

Firebolt - (1D20+6)

(8) + 6 = 14

Dec 6, 2016 10:24 pm
OOC:
Are you aiming at the rope or the creature climbing the rope? Also, add damage to your attack rolls (I'll just ignore it if the attack misses).
Dec 6, 2016 11:04 pm
OOC:
The rope.

Rolls

Damage - (1D10)

(9) = 9

Dec 7, 2016 2:30 am
Parallel shouts over the din, "OY Haesh! Trouble on the port side, too?!"

If Haesh indicates in the affirmative, Parallel will draw weapons and move to back him up.
Dec 7, 2016 2:41 am
Golwen's bolt of fire flares as it impacts the rope and a small explosion detaches it from its anchor. The fish-like creature falls back into the roiling ocean with a splash.

Rhodrick can hear Captain Yokgrumli yelling something, though whether it is to him or the helmsman isn't clear, as the dwarf's words are lost in a thunderclap.
Dec 7, 2016 2:51 am
As the fish creature falls to Golwen's spell Jandral aims his own spell at the rest of the ropes attached to the grapples.
OOC:
I rolled a bunch of extra attack rolls before. Use those, or you want fresh ones?
Dec 7, 2016 2:54 am
OOC:
Don't roll yet. I just used the first roll since I only wanted one attack. This is all happening simultaneously, but we can consider this a free round that you all have to act. Once Haesh and Parallel complete their Action, we'll commence with what appears to be combat.

Haesh and Parallel, you have an Action you may take if you wish. If not, let me know and we'll proceed.
Dec 7, 2016 3:08 am
Parallel peers over the port side railing to see the hooks, ropes, and nasty fish creatures!
OOC:
no effective ranged attacks -- are any ropes high enough to reach with a sword?

Rolls

slash at rope (if possible) Shortsword, damage - (1d20+6, 1d6+4)

1d20+6 : (9) + 6 = 15

1d6+4 : (1) + 4 = 5

Dec 7, 2016 3:16 am
OOC:
There was one that had come over the railing, which Haesh had moved to. None of the other hooks, barbs, and spears are near enough for melee.
Parallel's blade cuts through the rope, and with a flash of water the broken tension snakes quickly over the railing and back into the water. One of the fish-creatures was using that rope, and follows its broken tether under the waves.
Dec 7, 2016 3:28 am
Haesh looks over as Parallel slashes the rope. He gives him a quick grin and a nod. "Thanks! You saw them down there right?!" he yells to Parallel over the din of the storm.

Haesh leans back against the railing and lets out another long breath. He then puts his knife away and pulls out his warhammer and shield. "Looks like the fun is about to begin!"
Dec 7, 2016 5:07 am
"I did see it!" Parallel says, grinning as he sees the war hammer, "What the blazes are they?"

He then mutters under his breath, "I think I'd go with braized in a white wine sauce with some capers..."

Rolls

Initiative - (1d20+4)

(15) + 4 = 19

Dec 7, 2016 7:43 am
Those on the starboard side (Rhodrick, Jandral, and Golwen) see more fish-like creatures emerge from the water, one climbing each of the three ropes currently attached to the hull. The lightning briefly silhouettes the creatures, jagged fins flat against the endless rain.

On the port side, Parallel and Haesh stand ready as the creature ends its climb to where its hook has latched onto the hull. From its position, holding onto the rope with one hand, it reaches behind for a barbed spear, which it thrusts upward at Haesh. However, the angle of the attack is too great to afford a good target, and the weapon deflects harmlessly off the railing.

Two more fish-like creatures emerge from the water on the port side, climbing the ropes and scaling the hull.

Currently it seems like the captain and crew are too engaged in keeping the ship sailing through the storm to either notice or address this threat from beneath the waves.
OOC:
Player turn!

Jandral and Golwen are at the starboard rail, main deck. Rhodrick in on the aft weatherdeck where the wheel is, looking over starboard. There are three creatures in the process of climbing their ropes, 15' away.

Parallel and Haesh are at the port side, main deck. One creature has reached where the rope is attached to the hull and is 5' away, while two more have just emerged, 15' away.

Tordek is on the main deck.
Dec 7, 2016 10:33 am
Jandral picks the fish-man closest to the rail. But instead of aiming his spell at the creature directly he goes for its rope.
OOC:
Use those extra attack rolls before, or you want fresh ones?
Dec 7, 2016 3:58 pm
OOC:
Roll a new one. Add damage to the roll, in case it wasn't specified.
Dec 7, 2016 6:50 pm
Rhodrick darts to the closest harpoon and strikes with both rapiers!
OOC:
He'll strike at the creature if it's high enough on the rope, or the rope itself if not.

Rolls

Main Hand Rapier - (1d20+6)

(13) + 6 = 19

Main Hand Damage - (1d8+4)

(1) + 4 = 5

Off-hand Rapier, bonus action - (1d20+6)

(7) + 6 = 13

Off-hand damage - (1d8+4)

(4) + 4 = 8

Dec 7, 2016 7:01 pm
OOC:
The creature is not within range. You *could* hold your attack in the assumption that it climbs closer, or you may opt for the rope itself.
Dec 7, 2016 8:17 pm
OOC:
Target the rope. The fewer fish folk near the deck, the better!
Dec 7, 2016 8:30 pm
OOC:
Fire Bolt vs. rope

Rolls

Fire Bolt, damage - (1d20+5, 1d10)

1d20+5 : (15) + 5 = 20

1d10 : (7) = 7

Dec 7, 2016 9:13 pm
Haesh feels the spear deflect off of the railing and turns to face his attacker. He pulls back his warhammer and swings it over his head in a high arc bringing it down on top of the creature.
