OOC:
I agree to have the party wait for morning. Inside is OK with me.
Rhodrick looks up at the fading light of dusk. "If we're bunkin' in the shack we should post a watch outside."

The interior of the farmhouse is a mess, with obvious signs of a struggle. The chairs are overtuned, baskets and other furnishings scattered across the wooden floor. A table lies smashed in half and splintered. There are two beds, one larger than the other, that appear untouched. There are a number of closed containers on the shelves that also appear to have survived the struggle.

The hearth is cold with spent wood. A spoiled and rotted stew is crusted within an iron pot.
OOC:
Determine a watch order if you're spending a long rest in the farmhouse. Do you light a fire?
Feb 19, 2017 7:14 pm
Golwen casts an eye over the interior of the farmhouse. The evidence of a struggle make him upset and he instantly regrets his decision to be accommodating. He would much rather rest outdoors, in nature.

Pushing his regrets to the back of his mind he offers, "I need but a few hours of meditation to be fully rested, so I'm happy to either take a double shift or to stand watch with someone during their shift in addition to my own. Regardless, it only makes sense for Rhevia and me to take a watch during the darkest hours of night. Since it is still early evening and some faint light remains, if there is no objection, I'll take my rest now and watch during the middle of the night."

He pauses allowing for anyone to differ in opinion before finding a corner of the house devoid of debris where he begins to prepare himself for a meditative rest.

Parallel sets about making dinner, sweeping out the fireplace, salvaging any hardwood chunks that have become coals. He gathers a bit of dried grass and deadwood that he diligently shaves the bark off of -- all fuels that his grandmother taught him were the best for a smokeless fire. "Use pure fuel if you want to make the djinn fire," she would say.

He also dumps the contents of the cast iron pot and scours it with abrasive sand outside to remove old food particles and bring back the black patina.

After heating the pot he'll add some water and reconstitute some rations for anyone who's interested. There's room aroud the fire for spits if anyone acquires any game.
OOC:
rolling survival check for the smokeless fire, because knowing and doing are two different things!
OOC:
oops! He may need an assist if anyone notices his smoke!

Jandral watches Parallel's preparations with some amusement. With his magic he could have conjured a smokeless fire with no need for fuel. But the halfling seemed to apply himself to his task with such enthusiasm that Jandral hadn't couldn't bring himself to interfere.

"I will take first watch outside." he says, and slips out the door.

Scrubbing out the iron pot and sweeping the fireplace took little effort and time. However, starting the fire proved a bit more complicated as the wood seemingly refused to take the sparks from Parallel's tinder. The halfling tried cupping the grasses to create a flame, but the forces of nature conspired against him for the better part of an hour.

Finally, Parallel managed to coax the flames forth and bring the hearth back to life. By this time, the sun has set and darkness fills the depths until it surrounds the farmhouse like a cloak. The light of the fire warms the interior of the building despite the ruin, and soon the iron pot bubbles with the simple meal.

Jandral finds that aside from the ambient glow of the fire within, there is little to illuminate their surroundings. The stars and moon are hidden by the canopy, and even his darkvision seems to strain when picking out details of the outdoors. The forest is quiet, and Jandral can only hear his companions inside the house.
OOC:
FYI, Trance does let an elf shorten the time spent "sleeping," but it does not shorten the time for resting. If a long rest is at least 8 hours, Golwen will still need to relax for another 4 hours, whether that's reading, talking, or anything else non-strenuous. He may still keep watch during that time, but not for more than 2 hours as such heightened vigilance is no longer restful after that.

Parallel's fire is smokeless. I just ruled that it took much longer than normal.

Who is taking second, third, and fourth watch?

OOC:
Golwen will take Second watch.

Edit: Outside but close to the house. And with Rhevia on the roof or in a nearby tree.

OOC:
Rhod will do third, just outside the hut door.
Feb 22, 2017 2:54 am
Whoever is taking third watch wake me up for the final watch!

With that Haesh secludes himself to corner one of the corners of the room and lies on the ground.

OOC:
Whoever is taking watch, give me a Perception check. If you can think of something that grants you advantage, describe that benefit in your roll.

Jandral sits his watch on the porch.

Rolls

Perception - (1d20+5)

(9) + 5 = 14

Because dinner was so late, the entire group (except elves, of course) experienced weird dreams.
[ +- ] dream

Jandral's first watch is uneventful. The forest is very quiet, so much that the faint crack of the fire and shifting of his companions inside the farmhouse seem so loud. The air is rather chilly, forcing Jandral to bundle up.

He does not see anything beyond the dark, and nothing moves about the trees within range of his darkvision.
OOC:
It is said that dreams inspire, even if they seem terrible. Parallel gains 1 point of Inspiration.

Second watch, give me a Perception check.
Feb 24, 2017 1:55 am
Sitting watch outside with Rhevia...

Rolls

Perception - (1D20+4)

(9) + 4 = 13

Perception for Rhevia (if appropriate) - (1D20+3, 1D20+3)

1D20+3 : (1) + 3 = 4

1D20+3 : (4) + 3 = 7

Feb 24, 2017 4:24 pm
Golwen does not see anything in the darkness of night. It is still a bit cold, and the thought of the fire inside proves a bit distracting. However, Golwen and Rhevia do not ignore their duties and maintain their vigilance.
OOC:
Third watch Perception check, please!
Feb 24, 2017 5:17 pm
Rhodrick rouses himself from an uneasy slumber when Golwens taps him for watch. A vision of a smashed spyglass sinking into murky depths and the scaly tails of predators circling does not fade easy from his mind's eye.

Rolls

Perception - (1d20+5)

(4) + 5 = 9

Feb 24, 2017 5:42 pm
OOC:
Rhodrick gets Inspiration for his dream. Anyone else wants to describe their dream?
A tad exhausted from a restless slumber, Rhodrick can't help but yawn as he stands watch. Lacking the benefit of darkvision, he has to rely on the ambient light from the fire inside the house to get his bearings of the forest. Still, despite the difficulty, he sees nothing out of place.
OOC:
Fourth watch, Perception check!
Feb 27, 2017 4:25 pm
Inside the farmhouse, Parallel and Tordek continue their slumber with the others.

Rhodrick remembers that Haesh volunteered to stand guard for third watch, and wakes the man to assume fourth watch. Though it's later than Haesh expected, he dutifully steps outside and keep an eye on the surroundings.

Perhaps having rested a tad longer, Haesh feels refreshed and alert. As he scans the perimeter from the porch, he notes how the ambient light makes it seem like the tree trunks are tall elongated people. It's rather creepy, and the more he looks at them, the more it seems like this forest is watching him just as much.

And then, in the far periphery of his vision, at the farthest edge of the light approximately 30 feet out, one of the trees moves to step behind another.

Rolls

Haesh Perception - (1d20+3)

(17) + 3 = 20
