Chapter 1: The Shadow in the Dorm

Be sure to read and follow the guidelines for our forums.

Mar 24, 2025 2:53 pm
After a long day, the girls finally can reach their dorm and rest.

The night was a pleasant one, with the cold breeze of winter still present in the air. The clear starry night-sky twinkling above.
But, as night reach its peak, the lull is broken, muffled noises of furniture moving annoy any girl with a lighter sleepy, some can hear whispers drifting through the halls, noises coming from below, those with heavier sleep have strange and cryptic dreams about a cold and dark old room, at its center, in a pedestal, lies a large and old book, in it's leather cover, strange symbols are presented.
But then, as the sun dawns, a girlish scream is heard in the dorms!

Anyone who wishes to investigate sees this:

A girl with a long-time friend, with whom she decided to share a room, was in shock, apparently her friend vanished in the night without a trace, and above her bed remains only a dark fumy shadow of her!

Oh, and class will start in an hour!
Mar 25, 2025 7:10 pm
"The hell...?" Hanami sits up in her bed, scratching her head curiously. She's usually one to dismiss strange dreams, but this one felt a little different somehow. Just as she finishes jotting the dream down in her journal, she hears the scream and comes running.
"How strange... What's your name? And your friend's name? Has her shadow moved at all?" She asks the girl. She starts to inspect the room for any signs of intrusion.

Huh, what a weird dream. Did you see that too, Freya? Owing to her mental fortitude and Freya's protection, Luna was not particularly affected by whatever went on last night. In fact, she woke up feeling well rested.

Indeed. How strange. Perhaps that place is somewhere in the academy. But putting that aside for later, it seems that there's a commotion in the halls this morning.

Luna, still half asleep, could vaguely hear the screaming down the hall. A bit curious, she went to go check things out. Unfortunately, due to the size of the crowd in front of the door and her short stature, she could only hear about the missing person rather than see the shadows left behind.

"It sounds like something right out of a mystery novel. I wonder if she was whisked away by a spirit..."
Mar 26, 2025 8:17 am
Lín Jìng hears the noise, hastily puts on the uniform, opens the door and looks around the corridor. Not seeing anything of importance in line of sight, she closes and locks the door from the inside. And then teleports up to the part of the corridor she checked seconds ago, in the direction the noise came from.

OOC:
Ok, I'll be moving forward in here, since that post was 2 days ago already. Anyone who didn't yet can remark their interaction with that scene still.

By the way, when I describe a 'shadow' over the bad, I merely meant a dark spot on the bed's sheets.

Also also, I don't think Smart would be useable on a perception roll like that.

Both Hanami and Ling Jing don't notice anything unusual on the room, they're pretty sure there aren't any clues to be found in there.

At the questioning, the girl says, "I'm Naoko... Naoko Ueda... My friend is called Izumi... I heard a weird shuffling sound, and next thing I'm hear is her scared scream, getting further and further away, like she was sinking!"

Despite the commotion, at the ringing of the school's bells, the crowd disperses, going to class.
Mar 27, 2025 12:41 am
Sumeryu slept just fine. Whatever spoopiness was bothering the girls dorm clearly knew that making a dragon angry was a bad idea. Or maybe she was just dense.

Observing the situation with the missing Izumi, and being plenty tall enough to stand head and shoulders (and chest) over the crowd, she gets out her phone to call the school safety officer.

It was going to be Ruby.
Mar 27, 2025 2:20 am
"I suppose the mystery will have to be solved later..." Class was starting soon, and Luna had her own priorities to worry about. "Surely the school staff will handle this one, right?"
Mar 27, 2025 6:30 am
Ibuki usually would not be one to oversleep however it seems after the excitement of yesterday the accumulated mental fatigue caused her discipline to become lax. As such Ibuki only just stumbles out of bed panicking slightly when she notices the time as she hurries over to her first class missing out on the commotion the others saw in her rush
Mar 27, 2025 12:38 pm
Of course it was to be Ruby! Who else would she call??

"Yuh-hoh!! もしもし!Aww, Calling so early! Anything you'd need? Or just chitchat?" Sumeryu hears through the phone.

Presuming Sumeryu would relay the incident to her:

The line goes quiet, Ruby hmms on the other side, and then, inhales vigorously before continuing:

"Oh, ok! I'm delegating you guys with the task of solving this! Think of it like a, uh... extracurricular activity!! Good luck you guys!!! Oh, and a little tip: try checking the super-confidential school archives that can be casually found on the library... Or, Uh... I remember hearing something about a leaking on the dorm's basement, that's why the shower pressure is currently lackluster, if you wanna know... Well, I'm waiting for my plumber costume to arrive, so I can deal with it... Who knows, maybe the girl was kidnapped by a crocodile from the sewers? That's a thing right??"

"Well, anyway, call me if you need any assistance and, heh~ Send Hanami my regards!" She adds, cutting the line, leaving Sumeryu there, dumbfounded... Or not, maybe she's already used to that.
OOC:
You guys can describe what you want to do during or after class now.
Mar 27, 2025 7:11 pm
It doesn't seem like anyone broke in. How was she taken then? Hanami wondered. She started to suspect a yokai was responsible. From Naoko's description, it sounded like Izumi was dragged down through the bed and flooring somehow.

"Okay, Naoko. Could you give me a brief description of your friend?" She asks. "I might be able to get a mark on her location. Don't get the wrong idea though! This just interests me on an intellectual level, okay?"

Committing whatever she's told to memory, Hanami turns and leaves the scene of the 'crime', but while she's thinking, she isn't watching where she's going. She walks right into Sumeryu. It's much like walking into an unyielding steel wall, so Hanami ends up falling on her butt. "Agh! Ow..." Shaking her head and righting her skewed glasses, she looks up at the huge dragon. "O-Oh! It's you, Sumeryu."
Mar 27, 2025 7:15 pm
Lín Jìng just wanders through the corridors some more, in search of the supposed disturbance in the morning.
OOC:
Essentially this is an invitation to randomly run into someone, whoever might be most relevant or most in need of grouping up with anyone.

OOC:
It was a good assumption that Sumeryu would describe the situation for Officer Ruby.
"The school staff," announces the giant beauty while putting her phone away, "have decided to delegate this investigation to us. And then hang up. The staff in question was Tojo-san."

Notably, Sumeryu did not refer to Ruby as Tojo-sensei. The everything-woman was good-looking and at least marginally competent, but she had done a lot to lose the dragon girl's reflexive respect for teachers ingrained in Japanese people.

"She said to give you her regards, Dr. Matsuyama. We should also, according to her, investigate the 'super-confidential archives that can be casually found in the library' and a leak in the dorm basement, since sewer crocodiles are a thing at Yokai Academy. She didn't say if we were excused from class."

Sumeryu folds her arms under her chest and shakes her head with mild annoyance. These "teachers" sure were useless.
Mar 29, 2025 3:11 pm
Much like Ibuki, Luna took her studies seriously, so she left the dorm and headed to class as well. Although, her curious mind meant that the topic of the disappearance would be on her mind all throughout the school day.
Mar 29, 2025 4:00 pm
Upon entering the class she will notice the absence of a certain... rather large individual. Given what she has read about the habits of dragons she has the premonition of Sumeryu falling asleep and then staying asleep for the foreseeable future. She brushes that thought aside as playing too into stereotypes though in the back of her head Ibuki decides to go look for her if she does not show up for the first class
Mar 29, 2025 7:18 pm
OOC:
Sumeryu didn't state she'd go to class, but I'd presume so (indeed I did, on the side-story)

I also would presume (and hope for) that the girls would stay together after class? So I'll treat them like a group, and if anyone would rather be elsewhere at the moment, you must only describe it in your action.
After class, as the group is leaving class, looking for clues, they comes across Rikishi.

New Rikishi
Who seemed to be looking for something, in a rather clumsy way. He perceives them, and goes, initially at ling Jing;

"Oy, Ling Jing..." She could see he's much more confidente on his new accent and voice-entonation, "Hear this, I was walking to class, as always, but a girl stumbled onto me, and then asked me to help find her friend! Well, naturally, as the lover and defender of all girls that exist, I accepted..." He sighs though, "Uh... I have no idea what I'm doing though..."

Changing subjects, last night I was, uh... talking a walk around the girl's dorm and... Well I've saw a weird light coming from what seemed like a basement! Well, I didn't even knew there was a basement, that's a great discovery! Uh, I mean, I thought that could interest you girls.
Mar 29, 2025 7:23 pm
Lín Jìng just waves modestly. "Umm, are you asking for help in helping out? What exactly is the complication at the moment?"
Mar 29, 2025 7:28 pm
OOC:
Presuming the group (or at least some of them do go in there) I'll describe the basement in advance.
Indeed, the basement was quite hidden, its entrance being a small hatch on the back of the dorm building, where the forest advanced to. The hat was taken over by pushes and grass, making it hard to see.

A more perceptive student wouldn't let pass the detail of a makeshift ladder strapped to a large tree, close to the door, and the binoculars hanging on a high branch by the strap...
Inside, it was clear the basement was way older than the building, with worn out bricks making it's walls, it was more of the dorm's foundations than a basement per se, but loots of antique furniture and household utensils lied there, covered by dust.

What capture most of the attention, was a circle drawn in chalk in the center of the basement. For a witch like Hanami, the symbols in there would appear almost unrecognizable, but which resembled some really ancient stuff from her people. In the center of the circle, lied a brass candlewick, still releasing soft fumes.
Mar 30, 2025 1:37 am
There is a violet spark at the tip of the wick. It quietly ignites to a tiny dancing flame.

It seems to be alive, as if the tiny flame is looking around—then FWUMP! It stretches half a foot high—and though the flame is an impossibly bright silhouette, it is very clearly alive!

She is alive.

And… it occurs to her that the giants tromping about are clothed. So I should—

As the fairy’s complexion fades from fire to flesh, magenta sparks swirl about her waist and head… and within seconds, she is clad in a little dress and even wearing a hairband to tame her fiery locks!

She seats herself on the molten candlestick, demurely crossing one leg over the other. Hands folded on her lap, she turns to face the considerably larger girls, flashing a very awkward smile.
[ +- ] Image
"I’m…" She takes a moment to think about how best to finish that sentence. She finally settles on, "…dangerously hot."
Mar 30, 2025 12:33 pm
Ibuki after being briefed about what was going on (and contemplating how the creature known as Ruby Tojo functions) will gladly accompany the group on the investigation

Upon hearing an unknown voice call out Ibuki will turn to look in the direction it came from... And is not able to see anyone, she will look around a bit more before asking "Pardon me but did anyone else hear something?" she really did not like the implications if she was the only one that heard that...
Mar 30, 2025 4:56 pm
As Luna followed behind the others into the basement, she took note of the unusual set up and glyphs in the middle of the room. While neither she nor the extra voice in her head could read them, it was clear some kind of ritual was being performed with them.

As she was inspecting a few of the bookcases in the corner of the room, she felt like she heard a tiny voice behind her. Luna turned around, but only saw her friends, none of whom who had the same voice.

"Huh? I feel like I heard something too. I can't tell from where though..."
Mar 30, 2025 6:39 pm
Hibana watches the giant girls. They hear me but do not see…

When one girl peruses the bookshelves, the fire fairy understands: They read in the dark! Giants obviously have light-sensitive eyes. Maybe that’s why they drew the circle around my chair, so I don’t disrupt their reading.

She remains on the candlestick and continues to observe.
Mar 30, 2025 6:42 pm
"It's probably just some harmless spirit. Don't let it spook you." Hanami shrugs. "More importantly, I think someone was here recently. The chalk is fresh, and that candle is lit. It corroborates Rikishi's statement about seeing a flash of light last night."

Not paying close attention to the 'candle', Hanami kneels close to the chalk circle and casts a light spell on the tip of her wand, using it to light the written script. "I think this might be old witch magic... I might be able to decipher it, given some time." She analyzes it more closely, running her hand along the circle gently, muttering under her breath as she traces the characters with her fingers.

The biggest giant is the last to enter. She has to duck to get through the door, and she can reach all of the top shelves without a ladder. The dim light dances on her bright red hair as she looks left and right, slowly, like a regal apex predator who owns the place. She is definitely not feeling completely lost in a library.

She about half a step behind Hanami, watching the latter work, when she spies it. No, her, definitely a her. The very big and very pretty girl fixes her ruby stare directly on the tiny flame creature in the middle of the magic circle. The dragon's pupils contract to slits.

Clearly, Kannon, karma, or some other mystical force has rewarded her for her good behavior and selfless heroism. The creature is alive, adorable, and made of fire. There can be no other rational explanation for her appearance in a mystical diagram than that Sumeryu has earned the favor of at least one Heaven. Not coincidental at all.

The gigantic, gorgeous girl steps over the boundary of the circle, watching that particular step to be careful not to disturb it. She doesn't say anything at first, merely leaning over the candle at the center and looming, to regard the itty-bitty and super adorable candle-fairy-girl. It is the very paramount of willpower not to shriek like a fangirl, grab her, and run. That would be terribly rude and inconsiderate.

After a couple seconds of silence, Sumeryu slowly crouches down to be at eye level with the fairy. She holds out her right hand, longer from fingertips to wrist than the fairy is tall.

"Hello," she says, "My name is Himeji Sumeryu. Who are you?"

And without asking or waiting for permission, she grabs the fairy girl in her hand -gently but firmly enough to not drop her-, stands up, and turns around to face the other girls.
Mar 31, 2025 12:43 am
Hibana’s eyes are fixed on the giantest of the giantesses. When the palm is offered, she isn’t sure whether she shou—

"Eep?"

She looks down at the ground falling far, far away. Then her eyes meet the giant girl’s—Sumeryu!

And now she knows her name.

Yes. I know her name. And why is that important? And for all that the fairy can’t remember, she does remember The Golden Rule: treat others as—

No, no, no, no, no… it’s The Golden Sunshiny Rule!

She tosses her hair, casually leans her forearms on the massive index finger curled around her body and smiles sweetly at Sumeryu. "Why hello there, Sumeryu. I’m Hibana, thank you for asking. It’s very nice to meet you!" She isn’t sure what else to say, so she says the next thing that pops in her head. "Your presence explains why the ceiling’s so high, and why the books are so big. Is this a library for tall people or something?"
Mar 31, 2025 1:22 am
Upon studying the magic circle, Hanami can't discover much. Those symbols vaguely resembled sigils that Hanami once saw on the appendix of a book, talking about the origin and evolution of magic symbols. These specially resembled the ones used around 2 thousand years ago.

Despite the overall unrecognizable nature of the circle, Hanami could at least guess it was a ritual for breaking magical seals. She also knows that this kind of spell must me cast in close proximity to the seal aimed to be broken.
Mar 31, 2025 1:39 am
Sumeryu smiles back, down at Hibana in her hand. The fairy's flaming body doesn't cause her any discomfort, as it might have with someone else.

"You're welcome, and it's a pleasure to meet you, Hibana."

Then she looks up, at the ceiling. It's higher than average. Back down at Hibana: "It's probably because we're underground. The door is shorter than me."

She holds out her other hand -the one not holding Hibana- to gesture at Hanami, Ibuki, and Luna. "These are my friends, Dr. Matsuyama, Ibuki, and Luna." Then she sweeps her hand back to indicate Hibana without pointing. "Dr. Matsuyama, Ibuki, Luna, this is Hibana."

Without pause or any sense of either shame or how incongruous the question is, Sumeryu then follows with a happy, "Isn't she super cute?"

She doesn't acknowledge that she just said something girly and instead asks Hibana: "Do you know how you got here, Hibana?"
Mar 31, 2025 3:55 am
Ibuki's eyes dart around before finally focusing on the little creature that spoke earlier, she is somehow not surprised that sumeryu was the one to see her first

"Ahem as Sumeryu has stated my name is Ibuki, apologies for being able to perceive you prior it is a pleasure to meet your acquaintance miss hibana"
Mar 31, 2025 4:16 am
Hibana waves to the Doctor, Luna and Ibuki. "It’s okay, Ibuki! Yes, Sumeryu, I am super cute. That is a fact."

Her eyes widen with worry at Sumeryu‘s next question.

She looks at the candle (way down there) and recalls, "The candle was… lit… possibly by me." Awkward pause. Blink. Blink. "Before that… I… well… ummm…

"Haha."
The nervous laugh is quickly stifled. There’s nothing funny about the dawning realization. "I remember my mother’s voice. ’Hibana, go to your room.’

"And…"

And that’s Hibana’s only memory prior to appearing in this room (which clearly isn’t hers). "And." Her whole life is otherwise erased from her mind.

"And,

"I… I think I need someone to… uh, hold… uh."
She pats the topmost finger of the huge hand that carries her. "Right. Holding’s covered. Thanks, Sumeryu."
Mar 31, 2025 8:40 am
"She seems... confused. At the risk of sounding cliche could this be amnesia? Hibana would you like follow us in the mean time as you clear your head, perhaps you may be able to recall something upon observing the surroundings" Ibuki never knew her mother but being suddenly torn from away from family is a pain she feels oddly familiar with
Mar 31, 2025 11:06 am
OOC:
-2 Amnesia, in fact!
Hibana rises from her seconds-long slump. "Tag along? Oh! Sure." And taking in only the most obvious of details, she adds, "Did somebody drop her lucky rock in here? You all seemed to be looking for something. I like to help!"

Not that Hibana remembers a single instance of being helpful, but she remembers liking to help. Be helpful, not hurtful, she imagines the go-to-your-room voice saying.

Suddenly the fairy in Sumeryu’s hand is an impossibly tiny spark, and the outfit of pinkish-purplish light flops and flakes into dissipating sparks.

The spark re-ignites as a fluttering fairy—a candleflame in the shape of a winged girl, white-gold with flickering red hair and wings! By the time her fire fades to flesh, she is clad in a magenta schoolgirl skirt, with pink-gold shirt and stockings. Two magenta hair ribbons keep some of her hair tame, but her bushy pigtails flicker like flame.

She willingly seats herself atop the same hand that held her captive, for she wasn’t escaping so much as showing the girls a thing she can do. (She thinks it’s even unique among fairies, but then, her memory is failing her…)

"I’m not particularly observant, but I can fit in places that none of you can fit in. That might be helpful?"
OOC:
I think my character sheet is viewable, though still a bit of a mess. Anyway, Hibana is probably most useful in terms of:
• getting past pretty much any obstacle
• sneaking by most people
• hindering enemies with effects
• healing the party (tigger: needs to be in water to heal)
• and she can survive in most environments (life support +3)

Hanami crosses her arms as she appraises the fairy with a critical gaze. She can't help but be suspicious, but Hibana seems harmless so far.

So cute...!!!

"Hmph... I don't know what to make of you right now, but if you want to help, I'm not gonna stop you. We're looking for a girl named Izumi. Something, or someone, dragged her away this morning. We came here because Tojo-sensei said something about a leak down here in the basement. Not to mention, we ran into someone that said he saw a flash of light coming from here last night. I suspect that flash was due to this magic circle being activated. I haven't figured out much about it yet, but it seems to be a ritual for breaking seals, and the caster must be in close proximity in order for it to work. Maybe you were sealed somehow...?" Hanami glances over at the brass candle holder that still sat in the center of the circle.
Mar 31, 2025 3:48 pm
As Hanami studies the candelabrum, she notices that a small and almost imperceptible trail of what seemed like dust or cinders ran from it; it formed a perfectly straight line and ended on the opposing wall.

The wall is, as the other ones, made of old bricks. These ones particularly seemed moist, and indeed the sound of falling water, like drops, could be heard on the other side and a small pool formed at its base.
Mar 31, 2025 8:09 pm
"Someone sealed me?" She grins at the prospect. "Ha! You saw my Violet Spark technique—no prison can hollllllllld… me."

Her eyes half-squint. Her lips form a thin straight line.

"Riiight, that’d be the whole point of a magical seal, wouldn’t it?"

She now rises from Sumeryu’s hand, crossing one leg over the other and seating herself in midair.

"This apparently concerns me too, but even though I don’t know your friend—and just met you—Izumi’s the priority." She’s serious. Maybe even a little alarmed.
Mar 31, 2025 8:36 pm
Sumeryu feels badly for Hibana and holds her just a little bit tighter when she expresses the desire to be hugged. She really wants to coo and otherwise express that Hibana is ultra adorbs, but that would be very matronizing. So, she doesn't, instead just being silent -and very large- support.

When Hibana transforms, Sumeryu at first panics a little because she feels like maybe she did something wrong, but then poof, Hibana is back. The dragon girl holds her hand out, palm up, so that Hibana can perch how she wants to.

"You have outfits," says the giant girl. "Magical girl transformation outfits." Her tone is calm and matter-of-fact.

Then her pitch rises and she gleefully adds, "Ah, that's amazing!" Without really thinking about it, Sumeryu reflexivelygrabs Hibana out of the air and holds her against her generously-endowed chest and squeezes. For just a moment. When she realizes that she did that, she lets go.

"Uh, sorry. Sorry."

She looks around for something to distract attention, sees the moist wall, and points at it. "Oh, yeah, Tojo-san said the plumbing was having trouble."

Hibana is suddenly pressed against Sumeryu’s body!
Sumeryu says:
"Uh, sorry. Sorry."
Blushing brightly, the fairy admits, "You don’t owe an apology to someone you didn’t wrong."

But the subject-change is probably for the best.

"Plumbing, eh? I can’t eat plums. Berries and cherries are sweet treats for fairies." She imagines the go-to-your-room voice saying that… and in that moment, it occurs to her that ‘plumbing’ has to do with the wet wall.

"Oh. Plumbing. Like, with water." She doesn’t ask if the water is for growing plum trees. "You are correct, Sumeryu, that my outfit is magical. And girly. And completely necessary—when I become a spark, I can’t take anything with me, clothing included.

"But my magical girl-outfit is fire magic. So, you can probably imagine that if I were to submerge in water… haha?"
She covers her mouth too late to stifle her nervous laugh. "Well… for Izumi, right?"

She flits close to the wet wall, hovering above the area that Hanami is investigating.

"How can I help?" she asks sincerely.
Mar 31, 2025 11:06 pm
Upon closer inspection, Luna saw that the small flame in Sumeryu's hand was in fact not a flame, but a person. "Oh, how cute! I'm Luna, nice to meet you Miss Hibana."

Hmm... how strange. I didn't notice her presence before. Could she be responsible for the magic circle? No, it doesn't seem like it... While the naive Luna was happy to make a cute friend, the other voice in her head viewed her with more scrutiny.

OOC:
I can see the sheet!
"There's some sort of trail that seems to end on the other side of the wall." Hanami points it out to Hibana, tracing her finger along the trail without actually disturbing it. "Do you think you could check the other side for us? See where it leads?"
Apr 1, 2025 1:19 am
Hibana smiles at Luna’s compliment and bows in response to her greeting.

She then follows Hanami’s finger… then the trail… then she becomes a violet spark! Her little schoolgirl outfit deflates and dissipates into fading sparks. The one spark that remains becomes a pin-point of light as it approaches the wall, then even the best eyes cannot see her…!
OOC:
Violet Spark - Hibana is passing through the wall!
Apr 1, 2025 2:38 am
Hibana's good-natued too! And seems to like hugs. Truly, the dragon has been blessed for her righteousness.

"If you have to go underwater, your clothes disappear? Oh, I hope it's not harmful for you. You really don't have to go look into it."

She clears her throat when Hibana poofs into a mote and disappears through the wall.

"I certainly didn't expect to find a person made of fire and that small in the library. Perhaps our saboteur was trying to burn the place down?"
Apr 1, 2025 3:09 am
On the other side of the wall, Hibana sees in fact the pipe, which supplies the dorm with water, leaking droplets regularly. But it didn't ended there!

On the other ide of the wall, stairs descended on the darkness, cobweb barriers dense around it. There below, lies a large chamber, as large as the basement they were, but way, way older-looking. The line of soot leads there, and ends on an imposing gate reinforced with rusty but still sturdy iron.

There were debris of a porcelain-like shards next to it; in some bigger shards, similar symbols to the magical circle could be seen.

The gate stood ajar.
Apr 1, 2025 10:53 am
Hibana is very curious. The narrow trail may very well have been her own, but that—candle! Yes, candle—was her starting point, not her destination.

She starts to worry at the way the soot ends. And the shards? The symbols around my candle called fire. So what appeared in the container? A water creature, she assumes. The lack of puddly footprints doesn’t rule that out. For all Hibana knows, the water equivalent of herself might absorb water and leave a dry trail.

What is certain: her Violet Spark trick was only necessary to see beyond the wall. With the wall out of the way, the girls can fit between those other boards.
OOC:
"Those other boards" = studs, which are typically 16" apart. I don’t know what the Japanese building code is, but I’m sure it’s also a space your average construction worker could squeeze through while building.
Hibana appears as a spark at eye-level*, and the part of the wall she exits is a couple feet to the side of where she entered.
OOC:
*Or ‘my-eyes-are-up-here’ level in Sumeryu’s case.
She reverts to her full size and magical-girls on the same schoolgirl outfit as before. "Here’s what I found…" She gives a detailed account of her short journey, sticking to What Is, not What She Thinks. "So I don’t know what was in that broken container, and I didn’t dare enter the gate alone."

She flies against the wall, her body burning brightly and giving off heat as she traces a tall rectangle along that wall, starting from the exact spot where she appeared as a spark.
OOC:
Clarification: Hibana is not trying to destroy the wall with her fire. Basically, she’s just hot enough to burn a black marking on the wall so you know where to break. The rectangle is 14" wide and 1 Sumeryu tall.
"If you remove this part of the wall, you can slip between the ‘important boards’ within. Then we can all investigate the lower floor together." She hovers sideways to clear the way, not entirely sure how the girls might handle the delicate procedure of wall-removal.

Ibuki wonders why there is a secret spooky passageway in the unused creepy basement located under the dorms... for that matter she wonders why there is an unused creepy basement? Was this just a yokai thing? Is it instinct to create places for tests of courage? She will also contemplate if this would count as damaging school property... She then thinks that would be a question for ruby to answer as she walks forward to, as carefully as one can, dissemble the wall to make a passageway large enough that even sumeryu could pass through
Apr 1, 2025 5:17 pm
Everyone watching Ibuki will see that she is detaching each brick individually and placing them in a neat pile by the side... for those that know what it resembles a game of single player jenga rather then demolition as Ibuki slowly chips away at the structure brick by brick
Apr 1, 2025 5:21 pm
Something seems to 'click' in Lín Jìng's mind upon witnessing this, and she gets involved too, gesturing with her hands as if to tell bricks where to fly, and they do hover carefully into similarly neat stacks, interlocking in a stabilising manner.
Apr 1, 2025 8:00 pm
OOC:
-1 Quirk: "Shoulders are Furniture"
Hibana is fascinated by the brick-stack magic. It probably takes a lot of concentration to develop that, so she flies out of the way and thinks Sumeryu’s shoulder would be a comfy place to sit… but ultimately decides to ask first.

"I was gonna sit on your shoulder, but do you prefer I sit on your hand?"

From the phrasing, she is clearly assuming at least one of these options is almost certainly acceptable to Sumeryu. She patiently hovers in the meantime.
Apr 1, 2025 9:59 pm
Luna watched Hibana pass through the wall and then come back right after. After listening to her findings, she was curious about the lower levels of the dormitory. After all, wouldn't the basement already be the lowest level in a typical building? And why was it sealed off?

As the others were already fairly efficient deconstructing the wall brick by brick with magic, Luna was content to sit back and watch.
Apr 1, 2025 10:00 pm
The two girls work on 'delicately' disassembling the wall and piling the old bricks. Soon, they make a big enough passage that everyone can pass through (Sumeryu would need to bend a bit, naturally).

After descending the stairs, the walls suddenly shift to dark decayed stone, which would resemble, to anyone who ever saw a picture of it, ruins of the ancient world, or a medieval castle at most; moss-spots filling it. The floor, being eroded, is uneven and smoth-surfaced, forcing one to take care on their step.
At the end of the stairs, they reach the round gate chamber. Hanami, already sharpened, could quickly tell that the shards were from a magical seal, now broken.

On the walls, the walls are filled with strange carvings, now faded and unrecognizable. The place was terribly quiet, though eerie wails could be heard, maybe from the wind currents; Right??
If one dares peek at the other side they see a larger hall, perfectly square, as opposed to the circular gate chamber. The corners are filled by rolls of strange stone statues, with weird proportions, big arms but small heads and legs. No features could be discerned on then, maybe erased by the passage of time?

Centered on the wall to the left, was a passage for going further, while a big lever could be seen on the opposed wall to the gate.
Apr 1, 2025 10:35 pm
"Those statues... they seem kind of creepy..." As she gazed beyond the gate, Luna felt that the statues could come alive at any moment and attack them. The lever on the wall in the back had her curiosity as well, and she was tempted to pull it, because who wouldn't be?

But first, they had to get rid of the gate in their way. Neither lock picking nor strength was her forte, so she stood on the sidelines, seemingly waiting for someone to smash carefully open the gate.
Apr 1, 2025 11:35 pm
The giant girl is quite happy that Hibana comes back. She can't quite keep from grinning.

The proposed opening is narrow enough that Sumeryu would get in the way, rather than help, so she waits while Ibuki and Lin conduct unlicensed demolition.

"Oh? Either is fine. You'll be cute either way!" Sumeryu answers Hibana. It's a direct and true statement as far as she's concerned. "I would like to hold you in my hand, sure, but if I need to fight anything, that might be dangerous for you."

She ducks through -sideways- carrying Hibana one way or another. Sumeryu insists on going first, both because she can see in the dark anyway and because Hibana is both adorable and a convenient source of light. Also, Sumeryu can fill the whole passage if she needs to, thereby protecting the other girls if necessary.

After emerging in the square hall, she looks around.

"Anybody recognize these kinds of statues? I'll stand in front of the door if you pull the lever, Dr. Matsuyama."

And she adds to Hibana, "I'm sure you can get away from danger, but just in case, feel free to fly behind me if anything happens."

A split second later, she realizes the other princesses might feel left out. She at first thought that they knew her protection was freely available, but then, just in case, she announces to the group, "Never be shy about using me as cover. I'm immune to rocket launchers!"

She has quite the proud and regal looking. Not arrogance but fully justified confidence in herself.

"These shards... They were once some sort of magical seal." Hanami picks up the shards near the gate and carefully stows them away in her bag. Who knows, maybe she can piece it together and research the ancient symbology later.

In the square hall: "I can't say I recognize them. They're just too worn out," she admits as she briefly inspects the statues. Their proportions kind of remind her of chimpanzees.

Sumeryu's proud declaration leaves Hanami wondering how the dragon knows for sure that she's immune, but Hanami refrains from asking about it. At any rate, she has her own pride to maintain. "Thanks. But I'm not going to hide behind someone else. Even if you're strong, putting you in danger in my place wouldn't sit right with me."

The thought of Sumeryu rushing to her rescue doesn't fail to appeal to her, though... She's glad her flushed cheeks aren't quite as visible here.

"Anyways, I'll pull the lever... if it's safe to do so."
At that, she rummages around in her bag. After a moment, she seems to find what she's looking for and pulls it out: a hand mirror with a smooth wooden frame. Thin branches and roses encircle the reflective surface.

"Athena," she says to the magic mirror. "Heed your mistress! Tell me, is this lever a trap, or is it safe to pull?"

Hibana decides the shoulder is best in case Sumeryu needs to make a fist to punch a wall or a bad person.

"Anyone who could launch a rocket at you must be a very cruel person. Even if he knew the rocket would bounce off your powerful body and leave your flesh unsinged… that is not cool.

"There will be none of that. Not on my watch,"
she impotently declares.

Lín Jìng, on the other hand, does not think long. She takes a wide stance and spreads her arms in a wide mudra, then loudly claps them together, using that as a focus for a telekinetic attack that is even wider, trying to smash all six golems together forcefully.
OOC:
Basic TK attack with a few ad hoc modifiers. Will-Based Attack +0, Area Effect II (up to seven targets and -2 dice to enemy defence) +20, Elaborate Gesture -5, total cost 15 END, 2+3=5 dice attack and +3 DX.

I'm assuming that the golems are somewhat grouped together (e.g. near a wall) and that the monsters are not grouped with the golems yet, since the golems are slow and were positioned as statues. If this is not the case, the ambitious six-target Area Effect would need to be replaced either by a smaller Area Effect (that does not risk hitting allies), or by Multiple Targets.

Ibuki receives a surge of intuition, she's enlightened by knowledge of these creatures.

Not only does she learn of their weakness, she also concludes it wouldn't be imoral to smash them to pieces, as they don't really possess a soul, different from the more perfect golem girl she met. Smashing them would be the same as smashing robots, that is, if she even knows what a robot is.

Improvising tactics, she calmly but firmly directs: "Ibuki, Dr. Matsuyama, let's retreat to the entrance so they can't surround us. Dr. Matsuyama, Luna! Use your barriers to make a funnel so they have to come at us one at a time! Ibuki, Lin, we'll smash them!"

The golem's attack sounds like it should have hurt and caused a considerable amount of damage. Sumeryu barely reacts to it.

The extra-giant girl switches from punches to her claws, which can slice through steel. With Hanami's information, she knows she doesn't need to strike hard or deep, just enough to destroy the magic letter on the golems' foreheads. She waits at the end of the funnel for the monsters to get to her, then swipes at the first, steps in, pushes the first back with her left hand, and delivers a follow-up to the second golem with her right hand.

With Hibana providing distraction, Lin Jing acting as artillery, Ibuki helping her hold the line, and the barriers funneling the golems, the fight should be very easy.
OOC:
Use Armor-Piercing once and Accurate once on both attacks with Ineffective twice, for a total END cost of 0. The golems' Armored is reduced by 4 for the purposes of these attacks and the DX of her claw swipes here is 6. Since she's attacking twice, her attack pool is 2+3-1+1-2=3. "Oh! I heard your question to me as I did my Violet Spark trick. I appreciate your concern, but in fact, water is not harmful to me at all. Quite the opposite!" She flutters to where Sumeryu’s wound is. "I’m sure you think this scratch is nothing, but I could make a bath hot enough to heal this and worse."

The fairy is already blushing from the praise, so if what she might be insinuating embarrasses her even a little, it’s difficult to tell.

Ibuki is rather curious what hovering would feel like so she will accept the offer, however when lin tries to cast the spell on her it seems to... Break and Ibuki doesn't manage to take 1 step before falling back down as if she were made of some incredibly dense material

"Huh I assume that wasn't supposed to happen..."

Hanami pulls Athena out of her bag. "What? Why didn't you tell me that sooner?" She grumbles before telling the rest of the group.

"The lever will deactivate the traps. Well, more accurately, Athena said it would deactivating the magic traps. She said nothing about it deactivating non-magical traps, so I think we should still proceed with caution. Is anyone hurt?"

The nested shrinking test is cool. Gets the point across and is also visually appealing.
The dragon girl glances down at her left arm, which has a couple scuffs. Her blouse has a medium-sized tear in it, but her skin beneath seems fine.

"Oh, I got a couple love taps."

She waves her hand dismissively.

"I'll be fine! But I appreciate your concern. If you want to help me, Dr. Matsuyama, I won't turn it down. Does your healing magic have a limit? Some kind of...ammo, I guess? I don't want you to run out in case there are more serious injuries later today."

Hibana then mentions wanting to produce a modulated personal onsen for Sumeryu. She...could do it herself...but it's a lot more charming when Hibana offers. The tiny fairy is so cute and earnest!

"I also won't turn down that offer of a nice hot bath."

"Thank you, Jing-san," she says to Triad Princess, then she tries hovering. She seems to have exposure, at least, to flight, because she doesn't act awkwardly or flap her arms. She has the demeanor of an experienced rider trying out a new kind of bicycle.
Apr 7, 2025 5:18 pm
She accepted Lin Jing's offer, though she keeps her feet on the ground for now.

"It does have a limit. If I heal someone with my magic, some time has to pass before I can heal them again."

Hanami frowns. Logically, she knows she should save her healing magic for when it's really needed, but she doesn't want to leave Sumeryu's wound unattended either, no matter how minor it seems.

She puts away her wand for now and approaches Sumeryu. "I can at least do this much for you." She pulls out disinfectant, bandages and other such things from her doctor bag and treats the scrapes on Sumeryu's arm.

The gorgeous giant girl leans over so that Hanami can reach the part of her arm that the golems scratched. Despite her obviously athleticism and lean, strong build, she has very soft, smooth skin. Or maybe the two are related. Hanami is surely well-read enough to know that soft fabrics can be surprisingly durable.

"Thank you, Doctor"

She flashes a warm smile.

"N... No problem. This is nothing." Hanami gulps. That smile is making her go haywire internally, but she stays focused... for the most part. She does keep hold of Sumeryu's arm longer than needed. So soft... Yet I bet her skin could already deflect a knife effortlessly...

"Oh. Ahem! You're all patched up." She lets go of Sumeryu and gathers up her supplies, stashing them back in her bag.

Her attention is drawn by the sound of the lever being pulled. "I guess we can move on now. Good job, firefly."

She rises into the air. She's flown countless time on brooms, but this feels different enough to be at least a little unsettling to her. I think I prefer my broom... As she levitates into the golem room and proceeds from there, she pulls out her wand and maintains a magical barrier around her body in case of any physical traps.

The golem threat defeated, the girls can advance further.

Going through the passage on the east wall, they end up in a big, two floor prison, it seemed, with barred-cells filling the walls, and stairs on the corners bringing to the bridges that give access to the upper cells.

In the center of the room, they could see the remains of what looked like a golem, a bigger and meaner version of the ones they fought just now, but the stone remains didn't seem they could pose any thread anymore.

Inside the cells, old, really old skeletons could be seen.

There were exits on all four corners, including the one they came from:

Ibuki promptly realises what she just said and turns red embarrassed by her outburst "... apologies for the usage of vulgarity I...... im just going to go crawl in a hole now" Ibuki will then crouch in a corner of the room and evaluate all the choices in her life that brought her here

"I doubt they knew about this when they constructed the dormitory. I'd wager these underground chambers are much, much older than Yokai Academy."

She feels a sense of sadness when she looks at the skeletons. Of course, she doesn't know what crimes these prisoners committed, if any, but she believed no one deserved to be left to rot like this. Nevertheless, she turns her focus to the remnants of the large golem. "Why did this place exist, though? Who would want to unseal it after so long?"

She looks to Lin Jing. "Could you unlock these cells for me? I want to get a closer look at the skeletons. You can tell a lot from them if you know what to look for. Gender, age, ancestry, and such."
Apr 10, 2025 3:30 am
"These skeletons... Was this place used as a prison before?" Upon entering the room, Luna felt a sense of unease, as well as sadness. The underground level of the dorms was clearly used as a prison in the past. The people in the cells seemed to have met their end while imprisoned. Imprisoned for what, Luna didn't know, but she said a quick prayer for them under her breath. She felt a bit sad that they never got a proper burial.

"I hope that golem doesn't activate either..." Luna also eyed the large golem in the room a bit nervously, still a bit wary from their recent battle.
Apr 10, 2025 4:51 am
"Uh, unlock? That would be tricky. But the bones can fit through the bars now that they have no meat on them, so I can bring them to you," she reaches with her hand towards the cells, telekinetically picks up the bones of a hand, pulls them closer, and waves them in front of Hanami for examination.
Apr 10, 2025 7:33 am
The dragon girl isn't bothered by Hanami hanging onto her. Externally, at least. Internally, she is calculating how much laboratory space Doctor Magic Princess will need to be happy with her chambers in the castle.

"This is a dungeon," she states the obvious, having surveyed the room. "Guarded by golems. There are probably treasures as well as mysteries and danger hidden down here."

Standing in front of the cell adjacent to Hanami and Lin, she really doesn't want to get her hands dirty, so she heats the air just above her palm with supernatural fire, hot enough to vaporize the rust on the bars. She then grabs and yanks those bars free with a casual display of superhuman might, the metal softened from the heat and her own strength surely prodigious enough to pull them out of the stone even without that.

She opens every other cell on the way to Ibuki's corner this way, leaving the remaining cells for Lin to work on.

Upon finally reaching Ibuki and Hibana, she crouches down, getting closer to the former's eye level, and attempts to reassure Ibuki: "You're allowed to curse. Saying something crude now and then, especially when you're surprised like this, is totally appropriate."

She puts her hand on Ibuki's shoulder, just offering presence and morale support rather than a demand that Ibuki get it together.

"And still far too similar I'm nature to the demons whom I share cursed blood" Ibuki keeps that last thought to herself as she rejoins the group
Apr 10, 2025 1:19 pm
Studying the bones one way or another, it was clear archeology wasn't Hanami's forte, but even then, using some general biological and alchemical principles, she can discover this: those bones were more than a hundred years old, they should be anything from a hundred to five hundred years old, she could estimate. The dungeon per se is much older than then, it seems.

Judging by the unusual anatomy of some - claws, horns, fangs, tails, etc. - it's safe to say they were yokai.
On some of the cells, some words could be discerned, scratched on the rock walls: "Zarukhim... Virtuus... Logonumens." Judging by the state of their erosion, these words were particularly older than most of the bones in there.

In another cell, now seemingly more recent, with sharper characters, they could read: "We were sent to capture this enemy's bunker. We heard they were holding prisoners in here... Experimenting with them... Nothing could prepare us for this... Take care, on the chamber southeast of here, there's a trap... Don't err the enigma..."

Hibana illuminates the walls with her natural glow. The last note disturbs her.

"Experiments…?"

And though she had been taking her situation in stride (no doubt, thanks to the giant girls being so polite and welcoming), she finally asks the obvious question. "Who summoned me… and why?" and her concern isn’t limited to herself: "And what about that container? I mean, I’m fire. And a candle brought me here. What if there’s a…" She contemplates the shards. "A water-person? A plant-person? I dunno, but.. innocent? Summoned against her will? Was someone gonna experiment on me, and is there another who we can save from… from…??"

Hibana points to the yokai skeletons. She is obviously bewildered. Her fiery hair flickers with uncertainty and urgency!

OOC:
I guess I should've just included the roll in my last post for expediency. I just didn't want to assume Lin Jing's agreement. I also think Hanami's Medicine knowledge would be applicable here
"Thanks." As she receives the bones through the bars, she arranges them properly on the floor. For the cells that Sumeryu casually rips open, Hanami produces some gloves from her bag and carefully moves the skeletons in those on her own. While doing so, she catches the writing that Hibana helpfully illuminated. So this was a bunker where people were being... experimented on. Damn it, that's awful.

"No one's going to experiment on you. I doubt anyone's still alive down here, but if we do come across someone, we'll save them." She smiles at Hibana, feeling it safe to do so since no one else is looking.

Once Hanami is done setting the bones outside the cells, she has many skeletons laid out for examination, which she conducts with a careful eye and steely focus despite how she feels. These people have been gone for a long time.

"These skeletons are at least a hundred years old, possibly up to five hundred... Some of them were obviously yokai." She holds up a skull with horns. "Perhaps most of them were, but I can't be completely sure. There are plenty of yokai that don't have notably different skeletal structures from humans. Witches are one such type."

She gently sets the skull back down with a certain respect. "If we're moving on, we need to be careful about the chamber to the southeast. Some writing on the wall said there's a trap there. 'Don't err the enigma,' it said. I'm not quite sure what that means, but I suppose it's worth keeping in mind."

Nobody's looking so Hanami can smile, eh? I see how it is. The dragon will have to earn the Doctor Princess's precious smile!
Sumeryu has played this game and read this manga before, or so she thinks. There is an equal chance she is wrong.

"If the people who summoned you are also responsible for the experiments, then they've been down here a really long time and they have no moral qualms. Maybe not even any sanity."

"I don't think it's a good idea to split up, but if we do, we should make sure the groups are chosen appropriately based on abilities. If we do, I believe that Ibuki, Jing-san, and Luna should be one group, and Dr. Matsuyama, Hibana-chan, and myself the other group. I would, however, advise that we stay together and explore the leftmost path first."

She points to the north.

"If we always turn left -or right- then it will be easier to find our way out if we get lost."
Apr 11, 2025 4:41 am
Lín Jìng seemed a bit puzzled. "By abilities? Could you elaborate your plan, Sumeryu-kun?"
Apr 11, 2025 4:56 am
"You have shown yourself to be a good scout and ranged support. Luna is observant and can make protective barriers, and Ibuki is a strong and resilient fighter. I am a strong fighter and resistant to heat, Dr. Matsuyama is versatile ranged support and can make protective barriers, and Hibana is made of fire and good melee support. So, the two teams would then have the most versatile spread of abilities for dealing with whatever situations may arise."

She seems both sure and proud of her assessment. She didn't assign people based on RPG party roles. That was someone else.

Ibuki would prefer to not split up in a place such as this, from her research into yokai while she was on the outside (i.e reading monster stories and watching horror movies) splitting up tends to be a bad idea
Apr 11, 2025 2:15 pm
Hanami takes off her gloves and puts them in her blazer's pocket. "I'd much rather stick together. Yes, the teams Sumeryu proposed are fairly balanced in their capabilities, but if we split up and someone on the other team gets badly hurt, I might not be able to reach them before it's too late. I don't want to let anyone out of my sight when there's so many unknowns. D-Don't get me wrong though, it just makes sense to keep the group together."

Taking the north passage, a long corridor of stone blocks, fluted rows of columns supporting it, they cross a carved doorway, and find themselves in an old library. It's a hexagonal room, with bookshelves covering the walls. Indeed, the place they current are is a gallery, an open space fills the center, guarded by a balustrade, and they can see through it that the library goes down three floors, with a spiral stairway leading to the lower ones.

The shelves stacked with old books, those with heavy leather covers and almost crumbling spines, but also ancient scrolls of unknown age. Golden light emanated by a big circle on the ceiling, of untraceable origin. Finally, some study tables litter the floors.

Next to the entrance they came by, stood another exit:

She also points at the ceiling.

"What's that?" she asks while looking at Hanami.
Apr 13, 2025 4:30 pm
"Incredible..." Hanami finds her breath taken away by the significant amount of knowledge packed into this room. If she had time, she would spend hours going through absolutely everything, but that would have to wait. "Right. It seemed like they left behind the prisoners too."

"That's the lighting, Sumeryu. It likely works through magic, though I'm not sure where it comes from. I'll take a look at it." Hanami flies up to the ceiling and inspects the circle closely, trying to feel and analyze the flow of magic, if there was any.

After that, she descends into the library and begins to go from floor to floor, looking through any archives or written accounts, trying to piece together the history of this place in hopes of gaining some insight.

Hibana believes she can help look around. Since she’s an expert flyer, she uses her wings to propel herself as if flying on her back, lazily orbiting underneath the circle on the ceiling.

This is probably important…

Her ‘snake-eyed’ stare appears attentive, ponderous and scrutinizing. But the fairy knows nothing about spell-casting and rituals. This could be a marking to show construction workers where to cut the ceiling before installing a fire-pole, as far as Hibana can tell.

The lighting orb on the ceiling seemed indeed to be magically maintained. Hanami could conclude with some certainty that it was due to light-emanating ore that it was kept alight like that.
Back at the library, though Hibana's search really didn't go far (which is for the better, she would be quite the hazard around books!), and Ibuki didn't saw anything close to Buddhist texts in there, indeed, the common theme shared on the documents seemed to be a totally different doctrine, unknown to her at all.
Hanami, on the other hand, rolled, I mean, searched hard enough to receive a generous lore-dump:

Apparently, this place was an ancient stronghold of a people called the Zarukhim; curiously enough, Hanami could recognize something close to this word on the old witch dialect of her village, today only spoken by grandmas, which meant something like 'the keepers of the Law'.

The place dates back to the early Middle Ages, being abandoned and re-inhabited multiple times. The last one being around a hundred years ago, when a war seemed to be taking place.

About the prisoners and experimenting, well... They seem to go back a long way. Their purpose: to remove from a monster's soul, it seemed, what they called a Logonumen (sic.). The purpose of this was still uncertain, though.

The notable exception to Ibuki's lackluster search, were the mention of great cycles the world revolves around, being a concept she's familiar about. Apparently, a great war of mythical proportions took place some two thousand years ago, and on the latest texts from the library (from a hundred years ago), it seemed another such time was to come in the foreseeable future.

Finally, on the time she got to study the place, Hanami learned a bit about their magical knowledge and tradition. It seemed greatly linked to the underlying order of the cosmos, being a great deal more abstract than her known Nature-based magic. On the short time she got, she could learn the basics about some concepts, which could prove useful, may she met one of these sorcerers. These symbols, which related to the Four Elements, seemed of note:
🜂: Fire
🜁: Air
🜄: Water
🜃: Earth

"Should we postulate that Hibana-san has three more counterparts, one dangerously down-to-earth, one dangerously airheaded, and some fourth one?"

When Hanami reconvenes with everyone, she explains her findings to them in an expedient manner.

She looks at Lin Jing and Hibana. "That theory has a little more merit now..." Hanami admits, shrugging as she sits with a couple stacks of books and several scrolls around her. From memory, she reproduces the magic circle that was around Hibana's candle onto a piece of paper, then cross-references it against the Zarukhim's magic using the books.

"These Zarukhim... I assume they're some distant relative of today's witches. In my village, we've got a word similar to their name in the old dialect that the elders still speak. It roughly translates to 'the Keepers of the Law'. This is a huge discovery, but... Horrible acts were committed here. Whatever they were trying to extract from yokai souls, the Logonumen, it couldn't have been for good reasons." Hanami seems conflicted. The excitement of discovering ancient magics to study was overshadowed by the darker aspects of the Zarukhim.

"Huh? Three more Hibanas? I wonder where they went then, or are they even still here?" Luna tried to imagine what fairies representing the other elements would be like and where they were now.

"Extracting yokai souls... Then those bones we saw earlier... That's terrible." As Luna learned more and more about the dungeon they were in and what happened in the past from Hanami, she couldn't help but feel sad about the tragic experiments that took place. However, it only compelled her curiosity to uncover the truth, wanting to make sure this place truly was abandoned and the experiments halted.
Apr 15, 2025 6:58 pm
"The extraction of the soul... I hope that is not what has occured with our missing student" Ibuki feels slightly guilty that she felt some relief in the confirmation that despite being a monster she does still on fact possess a soul, now if only she could have confirmed this through a method that did not involve unforgivable sins that would have been nice.
Apr 15, 2025 9:08 pm
Ibuki's mention of the missing student seems to motivate Hanami. She stops what she's doing and starts to quickly shove the most important books into her magical bag, mostly the ones about the bunker's history and the Zarukhim's magical disciplines. The bag's void swallows it all up. When she's finishes, she stands up.

"Right, we need to hurry up and find her before something happens to her. Up on the gallery, there was another exit to this room, right next to where we entered from. Unless anyone has business left here, let's go through there and see where it leads."

Suddenly worried about the missing girl's status, Hanami pulls Athena out of her bag. "O magic mirror, heed your mistress. Show me the missing girl, Izumi."

She brings to mind the physical description she received from the girl's friend. It'd be a little more difficult to see Izumi since she's never met her, but not impossible.

Hanami can successfully trace the purpose of the magic circle on the entrance, where they found Hibana.

It seems, the seal of the entrance was made in a way that, if overwhelmed with the element of fire, it would be broken, and that would explain Hibana being summoned. Not her lack of memories, though...
"Uh... Looking for missing girls? How boring..." Athena mumbles, as she scries for the lost girl. Despite the hardship of looking for someone she never saw, she can sense something!

On the mirror, Hanami (and the others who care to look), find a girl among a nebulous and undefined place. She's not alone! A great aura of darkness seems close to her, the sound of a heavy gate being shut can be heard.

Mysterious Man
Curiously though, a man seems to be sit in one of the old wooden chairs, leaning lazily on it, smoking a cigarette, his dark long coat and black hat contrasting with his pale blonde hair.

As he spots any of the girls, he demurely stands on his feet, and bows down in greeting, "Greetings, good ladies... A pleasure to make your acquaintance." He says, with a deep and velvety voice.

"And what such radiant youth seeks in this old and decrepit light-forsaken place?" He walks to a nearby table, his gait impeccable, and wipes the thick dust from it. "Oh, don't tell, you're looking for a girl, perchance? He chuckles.

"Well, well... She is just on the other side of the gate on the chamber back there." He points with a cane he produced from inside his cloak. "They just had it shut though... You will have to pass the charade, I'm afraid... But may still get them, if you be fast."

He checks his pocket-watch, made of pure gold.

Good, the girl's still alive... For now. Hanami is able to relax a bit knowing that Izumi is unhurt and apparently nearby. However, her face goes as red as a tomato due to Athena's question.

"W-What!? Of course not!! And what the hell are you about to show!?" Hanami hides Athena's surface against her chest before the image can completely materialize.

"I-I don't know what that was about, hehe..." Hanami murmurs guiltily. Last night comes to mind, but she does her best to ignore it and focus. "Let's move."

As Hanami is holding Athena, she can't but hear Lin Jing. She gives the yasha a serious side-eye. "...You're not borrowing her," she declares preemptively.
Hanami's hand hovers close to her wand when she sees the mysterious man, but she relaxes once she realizes he doesn't pose an immediate threat. That doesn't mean that she trusts him though. She crosses her arms. "Who are you? What is the charade?"

He then offers her and her friends a benevolent smile, "I'm faithful that you have what it takes to succeed at it!"

"Hmph... You're acting a little too familiar with us, but I guess I should thank you for the warning, Bentsuyon. What do you get out of it, though? Why are you even here in the first place? This isn't exactly some tourist spot that someone can just stumble upon."

Sumeryu is unbothered by Hanami's snark. Princesses are allowed their eccentricities, and maybe the dragon could learn to enjoy banter and teasing. She idly peruses the shelves for a few minutes while the more academically inclined Princesses actually go through the contents of the books, looking for clues as to the whereabouts of the missing girl and details about the occult sorcerers who used to live here.

She nods at Lin's assessment of possible addition elemental fairies and giggles at Hibana's assertion that one might be dangerously wet.

When it's time to go, she naturally leads from the front again.

Athena's comment causes her to turn to look back at Hanami. "Naked girls?" she asks the magical doctor girl.

If Doctor Princess likes girls, that should be even better! With Sumeryu's devastating, superhuman good looks, permanent capture should be easy! Huzzah! Naturally, she keeps herself composed, because it wouldn't do to seem overly excited at someone peeping. She's not being judgmental, though.
Standing before Watch Lad, with Ibuki between them and Sumeryu towering over her so that she can see and be seen clearly anyway, the giant girl mirrors Hanami and folds her arms, signaling her skepticism and wariness of the strange man and his nonchalance.

"He's trying very hard to be Tuxedo Mask but is much too sinister for that," she agrees with Lin, having forgotten to keep her hobbies secret with the prospect of delivering righteous fury and rescuing a kidnapped girl in front of her.

She addresses the man: "And further, Bentsuyon-shi," she uses an honorific reserved for people suspected of crimes, "You are here, seemingly alone, when atrocities were commited long ago and are aware that a girl has been kidnapped, yet you did not stop the kidnappers or summon help to do so. Tell us why we shouldn't haul you in for questioning." Her tone and posture indicate hostility and a willingness to do violence immediately if necessary.
Apr 17, 2025 2:57 am
"N-naked girls?" Luna couldn't help but be surprised by Athena's revelation. She blushed a bit at the implication of why Hanami was doing it, but her face did show a bit of judgement of Hanami's past times...

Nyeh haha, it seems there's a voyeur in this little group!
I don't think that's a good thing, Freya...

As they traveled to the next room, Luna listened to Bentsuyon introduce himself. She wanted to believe his words since he wasn't openly hostile, but him waiting down here was very strange to her.

Dressed in black and obviously waiting for us, this buffoon seems highly suspicious to me, Luna.

"Um, who do you mean by 'they'? Who shut the gate?"

Betsuyon sighs in mock frustration at Hanami's inquisitiveness: "My, are all young people so cynical these days? I could very well have solely the intentions of helping you out!" He chuckles.

He seems even more amused at Sumeryu's question, his eyes getting sharper, "Heeh... Let us not rush ourselves into conclusions! I am here, indeed, just as you are! Further on, I am, in fact, trying to stop the party that did the kidnaping. That's why I'm here, talking with you."

As more questions come, like Luna's, he adds: "The party that kidnaped your colleague is but a bunch of revolutionary ruffians who wish to turn the world upside down, and for that, they seek what's in the depths of this dungeon, in other words, on the forth level. Just as that little fairy there was used for opening the first floor, they intend to use the girl to open the next one." He concludes, closing his eyes and breathing relaxed.

Then a big grin grows in his face, "As for my intentions, it suffices to say it is in my great interest to stop them from doing that... I must apologize, if you think I'm not doing enough to help, but... I must keep complete secrecy of my presence from them, for now, you see? That's how I can help out the most." He finishes.

"Now, before you go, be warned, the man who's currently with the girl is a powerful sorcerer, don't underestimate him."

With that, he starts walking away.
Apr 17, 2025 2:00 pm
Lín Jìng does not move out of her tactical cover. "Definitely meme Tuxedo. Uh, Sumeryu-kun, could you ask him if we should prepare for a big showdown right now, or if the big sorc is actually hidden away and we'll need to keep investigaing? If he knows, that is."

Hanami still can't completely trust the man. She feels he might have his own agenda, but there isn't much time to interrogate him, so she limits herself to just a couple more questions, her curiosity piqued by something he said.

"Wait! Those revolutionaries... What they want is a book, isn't it?" Hanami asks, remembering the strange dream she had this morning. "Not just any book. It's kept on a pedestal in the deepest recesses of this dungeon. What do you know of it? How exactly would it let them achieve their goals?"

The man is forced to stop on his tracks again, as Hanami mentions a book. Having his back to her, he starts, "Ooh..." Then turning to her again, "Heh, how interesting... Yes, that's correct. They're looking for the Grimoire of Kabeela. It compiles all the findings from the wretched experiments that were conducted in here."
Apr 18, 2025 4:45 am
If one checks the next room, where the gate is, they see:

A square room with a gate on the south wall, piles of bones and skeletons pile the corners of the room, some burned, some crushed. The walls are mossy and slimy and the floor is polished to a sheen, even being slippery; perpendicular to the side walls, scratches can be seen on the stone-floor. A cylindrical pedestal lies in its center, with a recess running along one side of it, four strange glyphs can be seen in a column, in this order:

🜂
🜁 🜄 🜂 🜃
🜄 🜂 🜃 🜁
🜃 🜁 🜄 🜂

They notice the glyphs can be rotated, alternating between the 4 kinds. Only the top one is fixed, and cannot move. Atop the pedestal, there's a lever.

Finally, scribed above the metal gate, a phrase in Latin can be read: "Flectere si nequeo superos, Acheronta movebo." If I cannot move the heavens, I shall move the waters of the underworld.
Apr 18, 2025 5:35 am
Sumeryu is intensely skeptical of Benstuyon. She also can't resist the call to rescue a helpless victim.

"Thank you then, I suppose, Bentsuyon-san. Be seeing you."

She unfolds her arms and advances into the next room as Ibuki opens the door. Simultaneously, she says to Hibana, "We'll get this guy and make sure he's punished. And then the rest of his cabal."

She gets out her phone to check if she gets reception in the dungeon. Her intention is to alert Ruby and the Headmaster both that there is a cult of sorcerers kidnapping students and a mysterious stranger traipsing about.

If no reception though, she won't be deterred or go back. A dragon never retreats. Other things retreat from dragons.

After examining the pedestal and column, she ventures, "It looks like the puzzle is to align the symbols in order based on the elements. And -thank you for translating, Dr. Matsuyama- I think the correct order is fire at the top for the sun, then air for the atmosphere, then earth for the ground, then water for the river of the river of the underworld. What does everyone else think?"
Apr 18, 2025 5:37 am
"Waters of the underworld? Should that mean we need to move water under the earth, and leave fire and most importantly air untouched on this cylinder?" wonders Lín Jìng from behind Sumeryu.

She then realised that she blurted this out right after Sumeryu, and, embarrassed, tried to become even less noticeable, quietly and slowly putting up an invisibility spell, though only using its minor form to reduce the attention, not eliminate it entirely.

Hanami's eyes widened slightly. So my hunch was right. That dream had been a premonition of sorts.

"The Grimoire of Kabeela... I've never heard of that, but if it really holds all that cursed knowledge, we can't let it fall into the wrong hands."

Pushed on by the need to hurry, Hanami follows the others into the next room. She does translate the Latin phrase, deciding upon the more literal translation since it seemed most relevant to the puzzle.

"I believe Sumeryu and Lin Jing are right," Hanami says, yet there is an unsatisfied look on her face. Was it really so straightforward? She felt it was too simple of a riddle for the amount of lives it claimed, judging by the bones. Sure, maybe those that died were simply unable to read the phrase and suffered the consequences of their ignorance, but Hanami still couldn't shake the feeling there was a trick to this.

Bentsuyon called it a charade. Why?

Hanami is silent for a bit as she wonders, but she eventually speaks. "Just in case, I think we should hang back and have Lin Jing pull the lever from outside the room with her powers. I can't help but feel like the answer is too obvious, as if it's what they want you to think. Plus, we might end up getting locked inside if we're wrong, then I presume the traps trigger and we end up like them." She looks at the bones piled up in the corners. She found it rather strange that the remains were exclusively gathered in the corners, rather than being more scattered.
Apr 18, 2025 7:57 am
"Ah-hah. Yeah, that's a very good idea. Those bodies definitely look like people who were trying to escape after they were trapped in here," Sumeryu agrees with Hanami. Leading by example, she goes back out of the puzzle room and waits for the group.
Apr 18, 2025 8:04 am
"Wha?" Lín Jìng teleports a few steps instinctively after realising the mobile cover has moved, then follows the others.

"All right, I'll spin the cylinders and teleflip the switch once everyone is ready from outside. If the door closes, maybe Hibana or I can still get into the room to check how safe it is. Or we could scry, I guess."
OOC:
Moyreau, feel free to describe the spin/flip and the events on my behalf once it's time (i.e. once everyone is safe and gives the signal) if I'm unavailable for the action.

"S-Scry? Uh... Let's just leave it to Hibana if it comes to that," Hanami replies nervously. "Athena's quite tired." Of course, after what Athena said earlier, Hanami's hesitant to pull out the mirror again unless it becomes absolutely necessary.

Hanami stands just outside the puzzle room alongside Sumeryu.
Apr 18, 2025 9:12 am
Only now Lín Jìng realised that the mention of scrying was connected to the mirror in Hanami's mind.

"Oh?" Lín Jìng spotted a momentary weakness in Hanami's confidence. "I guess if you want to make our itsy bitsy cutesy firefly go through a locked door to a room of traps to check what's there . . . " she trails off for a second, looking at Hanami. "Oh, I there's also the option of me teleporting in and out quickly."

Hibana thinks what Sumeryu said is logical. "Earth is the world. Water moves under it. I, too, support this answer.

"If wrong, I will pass through the wall, trap it no trap."
Apr 18, 2025 5:27 pm
As the girls return to the previous room, there was no sight of Betsuyon anymore. And despite Sumeryu's tries, no signal could be found down here.

Carrying lot the plan, the move the stones no the pedestal, inverting the positions of the blue symbol and the green one. Then Lin Jing pulls the lever with her powers.

After a moment of quietness, the metal gate starts moving with a rumble, all of the chamber trembling.
On the other side, the girls see a vast round room, with large columns holding it in place. The ceiling was quite tall too, some 5 or 6 Sumeryus in height.

On the other side of, lied another gate, this one like the one on the entrance of the dungeon. In fact, this one also had a seal in it, not like the 🜂 of the former one, but now a 🜁, an air glyph.

Izumi Warakeda
In front of the gate, they could see her, the missing girl! She had a gloomy expression though, and a strange diadem on her head, with a pulsing purple gem. "R-run... Get away from here..." She mumbles pathetically.
Mysterious sorcerer
Next to her though, was a fearful figure, tall and imposing, he wears an armor that seems to be made of stained glass, reflecting light in hues of green and orange.

He turns his head towards the girls, speaking in a smooth but arrogant and mockful tone: "Ooh... You finally arrived! We were waiting, right?" He throws a look at the girl, which makes her flinch.

"And you even brought us what we needed, how charitable of you~" With that, he uncloaks his left hand, a terrible hand covered in a gauntlet of metal claws; it emits an eerie green light, and then the girls fell a rush of energy around them!

Aika Fujimura
"G-gah! H-Hanami!" Aika gasped, as she seemed to be swallowed by some kind of portal, reappearing on the other side of the room, next to the sorcerer.

She trembled there, seemingly paralyzed, as he waved his hands in complicated patterns, and a stream of energy seemed to depart from here towards the seal, it's elemental symbol resonating with it.
Attempts to stop all of that would be met by a powerful barrier, one that seemed to reflect back any force thrown against it.

Sumeryu fails to notice Lin's embarrassment, since the latter is invisible. But she does say: "Thanks, Jing-san." She gives a thumbs up, though to the air because she doesn't know where Lin is.

In the next chamber, she has a good look around while the villain monologues. It is big enough to contain her true body, which may be necessary.

"Dr. Matusyama -and anybody else who can work magic- can you bring down that magic shield or do I need to smash it?"

Sumeryu isn't psyching herself up for battle. She doesn't have to. She can explode into violence very suddenly and will do so in the next thirty seconds if none of the magic people can dispel the...well the spell.

Luna focused on the kidnapped students. They seemed to be unharmed for now, but the barrier blocking off the sorcerer made things complicated. She wondered if they even had the firepower to take it down? Surely this was a job for the mages in their party, thought Luna.
Apr 19, 2025 4:31 am
"Aika!!" Dread grips Hanami. She's surprised by the intensity of her own reaction, given that she hasn't known Aika for long yet. She draws her wand immediately.

"The barrier's reflective in nature. You might get hurt if you attack. Just leave it to me." A shadow crossing her face, she steps up and begins to weave complex patterns into the air with the tip of her wand. Just as she knew how to conjure a powerful barrier, she knew how to take one apart. An intricate magic circle forms in front of her, drawing wisps of mana from the air as well as Hanami's own body. Once the magic circle is sufficiently charged, a blindingly bright blast of magic fires towards the barrier.

"Atonement?? No, child, what I am doing is for the greater good of the monster race!! You will understand, sooner or later." The sorcerer utters, his unsealing spell almost complete, as he's met by Hanami's superpowered dispelling.

"Oh... It seems I underestimated you, little witch~ I should have made my barrier stronger; heh, nothing less should be expected from a descendant of the Zarukhim! Bwahahaha!!" He laughs evily.
OOC:
The witchcraft's resistance wouldn't be the barrier roll, but the abilities such as Iron-willed or resistance. Or dispelling it with one's own Witchcraft roll.

I'll use the roll you made, and just add the remaining dice to it.
He brings his other hand to the barrier, seeking to fortify it against the dispelling curse.

Sorcerer's roll: 1,5,4,2,6,4,2,6,6,1,1.
In the clash of opposing forces, Hanami almost overcomes, the Barrier shrinking almost to meet the sorcerer, but with some effort, he can keep it intact.

"Grr.." He grumbles, seemingly spent, to keep the defenses up. "I indeed underestimated you... The delving down of the second level shall wait. But I warn you: you may delay us, but you won't stop us!" He says, as the seal finally breaks in multiple fragments.

He opens a portal next to him, just like the one that swallowed Aika, a cacophonous circle of lights, like a vitral of stained glass (one with completely random tiles).

"Heh, I'll leave you a little gift though; celebrating our first meeting!" He turns to Aika, still immobilized and seemingly a bit exhausted: "I have been researching what was being experimented on this facility, and have been able to reach a pleasing result already~"

Just before leaving, he touches Aika's forehead with his pointy finger again, "Now dear: be set free! Be the precursor of a new age for monsterkind!" A burst of energy pushes her back, she falls on her knees, her head low and shadowy.

With that, he takes his leave, bringing the Izumi girl with him, her eyes in tears; the portal dissipating behind him, the barrier too, dissolves.
As anyone approaches Aika, she raises her head to meet them, her eyes shinning with a sinister red light, her face contorted in rage, as she jumps on her feet, and lashes at them!

During her dash, she moving in a total animalesque way, she begins to transform: huge wings sprout from her back, definitely larger than before, her whole self seemed taller, in fact, her uniform stretching as it starts tearing partially; her hands turn into terrible claws, and her feet in talons, which shred her shoes.

Finally, her body is covered in feathers, as she takes on a hawk-like body, not so the humanoid hawk-person a Tengu would normally be, but a beastly creature with no traces of humanity.

Anyone with reasonable knowledge of monsterkind would know that this kind of frightening form, where a monster's powers is greatly increased, is only accessible to those who lost a great deal of their humanity, getting stronger and more terrible as they further depart from it.
First Round of Combat:

Aika rushes at the party and, with a powerful fan of her wings and make a pair of miniature tornadoes hurl at the party: one target's Luna, Ling Jing and Sumeryu, as for the other, it target's Ibuki and Hibana. Tornado 1 rolls an 8, the second rolls 9, their DX is 4; they have Area Attack, so -1 for the defense.

Finally, she flies at Hanami, and tries to grab her with her talons, taking flight with her if she succeed. She rolled a 12, burning 10 Endurance for extra dice. If Hanami succeed in evading, she has to roll against a 6 to determine damage, as the talons graze on her skin (that is, if she tries to physically evade).

"Come back here, you stained glass bastard!" Hanami rushes up as the man flees with Izumi. She's the first to approach Aika when the barrier is no longer being maintained, and she's horrified with what she's met with.

"A-Aika...!" Eyes wide, she backs up slowly as she watches the grotesque transformation take place. The hand holding her wand trembles slightly. Her fairly substantial means she knows about this monstrous state a yokai can take, but she didn't know one could be forced into it.

What did he do?

She doesn't have much time to wonder about that question before Aika is upon them.

"Damn it...! Get a hold of yourself, chicken nugget!" She yells in vain. She fears there's no way to solve this without bringing Aika down first. However, she shoots a warning glance at Lin Jing. "That man turned her into this, dumbass! So don't go too far, got it!?"

The dragon is like the building storm, the wrath of Heaven waiting to crash down as thunder and tribulation with the cold fury of the Tiger-Dragon Empress. She walks through the tornado, completely unbothered, and is halfway across the room, taking long-legged purposeful strides, when the sorcerer absconds with his victim. Sumeryu does not speak, for words are no use now. Instead, she hurls a lightning bolt, a bright flash of electric death accompanied by a boom that explodes through the room. It scorches the floor where the "Bishop" used to be.

Then she turns her attention to Aika, or whatever she has become. Someone threatening Doctor Princess. But Sumeryu does not have unthinking fury. She leaps, crossing the room, arms outstretched to grab the tengu-thing in a bear hug and force her to the ground, with Hibana's help.

Lín Jìng waits a bit for one of the other incapacitating attacks to land (or not), then flickers into visibility for just a split second and makes a series of jabs in the air, each accompanied by an extension of telekinetic force at the tengu.

"Don't hold back, witch, we still need to subdue her!"
OOC:
Since two others are already on crowd control, I'm just going to do the conventional basic attack. Dice: 2d base + 3 basic Iron Will + 2 spell Iron Will + 2 Transformation = total 9 dice. DX 6 (basic 1, +3 from static TK and +2 from the Transformation).

Results: (365535133), best dice three 5s = 15.
