"This is a lot valuable books to just leave behind in a basement. Whoever left must have been in a hurry."

She peers over the bannister.

Are there any exits on the lower levels?

She also points at the ceiling.

"What's that?" she asks while looking at Hanami.

"Incredible..." Hanami finds her breath taken away by the significant amount of knowledge packed into this room. If she had time, she would spend hours going through absolutely everything, but that would have to wait. "Right. It seemed like they left behind the prisoners too."

"That's the lighting, Sumeryu. It likely works through magic, though I'm not sure where it comes from. I'll take a look at it." Hanami flies up to the ceiling and inspects the circle closely, trying to feel and analyze the flow of magic, if there was any.

After that, she descends into the library and begins to go from floor to floor, looking through any archives or written accounts, trying to piece together the history of this place in hopes of gaining some insight.

"This place goes deeper than I thought..." Luna stared down at the floors below from the railing. While Hanami flew from floor to floor checking out books, Luna took the stairs down, curious to know what was on the lower floors.

Hibana believes she can help look around. Since she’s an expert flyer, she uses her wings to propel herself as if flying on her back, lazily orbiting underneath the circle on the ceiling.

This is probably important…

Her ‘snake-eyed’ stare appears attentive, ponderous and scrutinizing. But the fairy knows nothing about spell-casting and rituals. This could be a marking to show construction workers where to cut the ceiling before installing a fire-pole, as far as Hibana can tell.

The lighting orb on the ceiling seemed indeed to be magically maintained. Hanami could conclude with some certainty that it was due to light-emanating ore that it was kept alight like that.
Back at the library, though Hibana's search really didn't go far (which is for the better, she would be quite the hazard around books!), and Ibuki didn't saw anything close to Buddhist texts in there, indeed, the common theme shared on the documents seemed to be a totally different doctrine, unknown to her at all.
Hanami, on the other hand, rolled, I mean, searched hard enough to receive a generous lore-dump:

Apparently, this place was an ancient stronghold of a people called the Zarukhim; curiously enough, Hanami could recognize something close to this word on the old witch dialect of her village, today only spoken by grandmas, which meant something like 'the keepers of the Law'.

The place dates back to the early Middle Ages, being abandoned and re-inhabited multiple times. The last one being around a hundred years ago, when a war seemed to be taking place.

About the prisoners and experimenting, well... They seem to go back a long way. Their purpose: to remove from a monster's soul, it seemed, what they called a Logonumen (sic.). The purpose of this was still uncertain, though.

The notable exception to Ibuki's lackluster search, were the mention of great cycles the world revolves around, being a concept she's familiar about. Apparently, a great war of mythical proportions took place some two thousand years ago, and on the latest texts from the library (from a hundred years ago), it seemed another such time was to come in the foreseeable future.

Finally, on the time she got to study the place, Hanami learned a bit about their magical knowledge and tradition. It seemed greatly linked to the underlying order of the cosmos, being a great deal more abstract than her known Nature-based magic. On the short time she got, she could learn the basics about some concepts, which could prove useful, may she met one of these sorcerers. These symbols, which related to the Four Elements, seemed of note:
🜂: Fire
🜁: Air
🜄: Water
🜃: Earth

"Should we postulate that Hibana-san has three more counterparts, one dangerously down-to-earth, one dangerously airheaded, and some fourth one?"

When Hanami reconvenes with everyone, she explains her findings to them in an expedient manner.

She looks at Lin Jing and Hibana. "That theory has a little more merit now..." Hanami admits, shrugging as she sits with a couple stacks of books and several scrolls around her. From memory, she reproduces the magic circle that was around Hibana's candle onto a piece of paper, then cross-references it against the Zarukhim's magic using the books.

"These Zarukhim... I assume they're some distant relative of today's witches. In my village, we've got a word similar to their name in the old dialect that the elders still speak. It roughly translates to 'the Keepers of the Law'. This is a huge discovery, but... Horrible acts were committed here. Whatever they were trying to extract from yokai souls, the Logonumen, it couldn't have been for good reasons." Hanami seems conflicted. The excitement of discovering ancient magics to study was overshadowed by the darker aspects of the Zarukhim.

"Huh? Three more Hibanas? I wonder where they went then, or are they even still here?" Luna tried to imagine what fairies representing the other elements would be like and where they were now.

"Extracting yokai souls... Then those bones we saw earlier... That's terrible." As Luna learned more and more about the dungeon they were in and what happened in the past from Hanami, she couldn't help but feel sad about the tragic experiments that took place. However, it only compelled her curiosity to uncover the truth, wanting to make sure this place truly was abandoned and the experiments halted.

"The extraction of the soul... I hope that is not what has occured with our missing student" Ibuki feels slightly guilty that she felt some relief in the confirmation that despite being a monster she does still on fact possess a soul, now if only she could have confirmed this through a method that did not involve unforgivable sins that would have been nice.

Ibuki's mention of the missing student seems to motivate Hanami. She stops what she's doing and starts to quickly shove the most important books into her magical bag, mostly the ones about the bunker's history and the Zarukhim's magical disciplines. The bag's void swallows it all up. When she's finishes, she stands up.

"Right, we need to hurry up and find her before something happens to her. Up on the gallery, there was another exit to this room, right next to where we entered from. Unless anyone has business left here, let's go through there and see where it leads."

Suddenly worried about the missing girl's status, Hanami pulls Athena out of her bag. "O magic mirror, heed your mistress. Show me the missing girl, Izumi."

She brings to mind the physical description she received from the girl's friend. It'd be a little more difficult to see Izumi since she's never met her, but not impossible.

Hibana flutters a few feet away from Hanami and the magic mirror, worried about the missing girl but also trying not to get in the way.

Hanami can successfully trace the purpose of the magic circle on the entrance, where they found Hibana.

It seems, the seal of the entrance was made in a way that, if overwhelmed with the element of fire, it would be broken, and that would explain Hibana being summoned. Not her lack of memories, though...
"Uh... Looking for missing girls? How boring..." Athena mumbles, as she scries for the lost girl. Despite the hardship of looking for someone she never saw, she can sense something!

On the mirror, Hanami (and the others who care to look), find a girl among a nebulous and undefined place. She's not alone! A great aura of darkness seems close to her, the sound of a heavy gate being shut can be heard.

"She's just south of here, mistress. I'm sure of it... Now, can we go back to scrying on naked girls??" She says, quite loudly, for everyone to hear, an image starting to appear on the mirror, for Hanami's dismay.
OOC:
I will write the scene on the next room, presuming everyone's going there now. If you have unresolved business in here still, feel free to add them to your next post.
As the girls hush south for the next room, they found themselves in an antechamber, they can see the remains of some wooden furniture, no doubt from the last century or the previous.

Mysterious Man
Curiously though, a man seems to be sit in one of the old wooden chairs, leaning lazily on it, smoking a cigarette, his dark long coat and black hat contrasting with his pale blonde hair.

As he spots any of the girls, he demurely stands on his feet, and bows down in greeting, "Greetings, good ladies... A pleasure to make your acquaintance." He says, with a deep and velvety voice.

"And what such radiant youth seeks in this old and decrepit light-forsaken place?" He walks to a nearby table, his gait impeccable, and wipes the thick dust from it. "Oh, don't tell, you're looking for a girl, perchance? He chuckles.

"Well, well... She is just on the other side of the gate on the chamber back there." He points with a cane he produced from inside his cloak. "They just had it shut though... You will have to pass the charade, I'm afraid... But may still get them, if you be fast."

He checks his pocket-watch, made of pure gold.

At a brief moment between Athena's speech and the encounter with the mysterious man, Lín Jìng steps closer and slips in a question to Athena, "Um, could you instead scry someone else like that. Like, say, the Aono heir instead?"
Apr 16, 2025 9:24 am
Good, the girl's still alive... For now. Hanami is able to relax a bit knowing that Izumi is unhurt and apparently nearby. However, her face goes as red as a tomato due to Athena's question.

"W-What!? Of course not!! And what the hell are you about to show!?" Hanami hides Athena's surface against her chest before the image can completely materialize.

"I-I don't know what that was about, hehe..." Hanami murmurs guiltily. Last night comes to mind, but she does her best to ignore it and focus. "Let's move."

As Hanami is holding Athena, she can't but hear Lin Jing. She gives the yasha a serious side-eye. "...You're not borrowing her," she declares preemptively.
Hanami's hand hovers close to her wand when she sees the mysterious man, but she relaxes once she realizes he doesn't pose an immediate threat. That doesn't mean that she trusts him though. She crosses her arms. "Who are you? What is the charade?"

Bentsuyon
"Heeh... I'm so very honored at you interest on myself, miss little witch!" He says, amused.

"You can call me... Bentsuyon!" He tips his hat.

"About the charade, well... Let's say the builders of this place had a rather curious idea of home security..." He says with a grin, "To open the gate in that room, one most pass the charade. But answer wrongly and there could be the most dire consequences."

He then offers her and her friends a benevolent smile, "I'm faithful that you have what it takes to succeed at it!"
Apr 16, 2025 7:34 pm
Lín Jìng stands behind Sumeryu, mostly shielded from the stranger's sight. "Uh, Sumeryu-kun, is he trying to be Tuxedo Mask? I think he sounds a bit like the meme Tuxedo, but I don't know whether it matches the canonical one."
Apr 16, 2025 11:29 pm
"Hmph... You're acting a little too familiar with us, but I guess I should thank you for the warning, Bentsuyon. What do you get out of it, though? Why are you even here in the first place? This isn't exactly some tourist spot that someone can just stumble upon."
