Chapter 3: Thistletop

Grimwulf rushes forward and demolishes the druid’s animal companion. The hammer hitting it over the back so hard, that it splits in two from the force.

Chigaru can barely see a few more goblin dogs through the small openings in the wall of tangles.

Once the animal companion is taken care of, the freed goblin dogs are easy to deal with. And the chained up ones are even easier.

Looking over the goblin corpse you find that his leather armor is magical. You also find a couple of potions of minor healing and a wand of bolt with 15 charges left.
OOC:
Calling it there, the goblin dogs will be easy to dispatch I assume, so you won the encounter.

The wand is a divine wand, requiring the Fate skill to activate.

The armor is a leather armor for small sized creature and has the Aegis quality, increasing the protective bonus of the armor by 1.

Once the battle was over, Khel scratched his beard and looked at all the corpses. "Well, we clearly reacted with our instincts here, and whoever the goblin druid was, there won't be any way to know his secret. However, I think we can find it ourselves if we try hard enough. Maybe we can catch a Thistletop goblin and interrogate it for the secret entrance."

Spying to the north, they don't seem to have picked up on the noise. They are two squads of 2 goblins and 2 goblin dogs patrolling. Though there is hard to tell any sytem to it. They are chaotic and easily distracted. At one point the team on the front of the building starts playing fetch with the dogs. Eventually the team on the back of the keep arrives in a huff, irritated that they are taking too long and it is time to switch position.

Ironically both squads goes towards the back until they realize no one is guarding the front. The original squad returns to the front, changing nothing. A couple of minutes they grow bored and head to the back, leaving the front open. But for how long this time?

Khel scratched his beard and said, "Looks like their patrol scheme is erratic. We can lure some out to reduce their numbers or find a pattern and make for the bridge."

Chigaru nods. "And they seem none too bright and easily distracted. Maybe someone could help them along with that while the others sneak across?"

As you get closer, you realize that sneaking in while they are distracted may be harder than you first thought. You see movement in the eastern watchtower guarding the stockade's southern facade. In the western watchtower you see no sign of life.

The rope bridge is made of hairy rope and thick wooden planks; the whole thing creaks and sways in the wind above the churning surf seventy five feet below. And you are skeptical that all of you can move across it at once, possibly leaving one of you to cross at a time while avoiding the patrol and the watchtower's eye.

Though it is hard to tell, you can't inspect the rope bridge properly without risking being seen.

Khel scratched his beard in the heat and said, "We will have to gather their attention without being. Why don't we create a distraction? Let's build a fire so that they can see the smoke. I don't have any illusion magic; unfortunately, I am very weak at it. But, we can do one thing, set one of this dog's corpses on fire and maybe throw it at the front of the bridge. I can cast feather fall to slow its descent. Maybe they will see the burning dog's corpse and send a team to investigate. We can capture one of them and interrogate it about how to find the alternate route."

Chigaru claps Khel on the back. "That is the most convoluted plan I have ever heard," he laughs. "This hideout looks like it was chosen precisely because it is easily to defend with one entrance. It think we either take our chances crossing the bridge our climb up from the far side. If you are not skilled at illusions, what about shapechanging? A bird to fly across or perhaps into a dog for a distraction?"

"We can try backtracking where the druid and cat came from, perhaps find tracks leading to this other entrance. Otherwise, if the mages' spells can't help us, a frontal assault is a good idea as any at this point."

As he says this, Grim walks over to where the druid and his animal companion initially appeared from to see if he finds anything.

"Shalelu, you're more familiar with these parts, do your elven eyes see anything?"

Khel sighed, "No, I am untrained in transmutation discipline as well. So, I apologize; I can't shapechange to anything else either."

It don't take a lot of effort to find the druid's lair. To the south of your current position and away from the keep. First you come to a small den that served the cougar's nest. Though following the thistle hallway deeper inside lead to another chamber in thistles.

A tangle of vines hang from the thorny ceiling of this chamber, each suspending a clattering collection of bird skulls, rib bones, teeth, and other bits of gruesome decor. In a few places the vines droop all the way to the floor. A large nest of nettles and thorny vines sits to the south, a halo of half-eaten dead birds and rats indicating that whatever sleeps there eats in its bed.

You find no other exit from the "room". Seems the druid have been staying on the outside of the keep for a long time, based on the remains.

Khel looked at the lair and wondered what kind of arcane nature rites the goblin druid even practiced. He looked around to find any tentative secrets or arcane artifacts that might hint at any secret entrance to the stronghold.

Grim did the same, pulling on the floor length vines, in hopes it was actually a secret mechanism to open a hidden path.
