"Pleased to meet the both of you."
Jonel continues in such a way that the children can't hear.
"Aanbo speaks truth. We have seen terrible beings lurking in the woods. They can't be reasoned with and they won't stop until..well, I think you know."

mathias0077 says:
Chase will head off east to check the bandit tracks before it gets to dark and will come back here later if he has the time. He will warry of the the other group of undead shambling about as well.
OOC:
Now east is toward Orlane?
Cecily's Road connects the town of Hochoch (to the west) and the city of Hookhill (to the east). In between them is the Dim Forest; the village of Orlane is about halfway between them. The Jarls live about halfway between Hochoch and Orlane. Hochoch is furthest west. Heading east from Hochoch, you first arrive at the Jarls' house. Continuing east, you next arrive at Orlane. If you continue east from there, you would emerge from the Dim Forest and eventually arrive at Hookhill.

I would have sworn that someone posted a link to a map and we talked about how accurate it was months ago, but I couldn't find it in a cursory search. I'd intended to make one of my own, but your question made me realize that I'd never actually done it. Now I have, and here it is:

I've also added the map to the Maps thread for easier reference in the future.

While they are talking, Elista prepares and serves biscuits to keep herself busy. Rosemary immediately recognizes them as a variation on the recipe she left with the family. Elista's husband, Abel, mulls over what the heroes have told him.

"You think they'd try again, Wondrous Lords and Ladies?" Abel asks the group. "Why? It's just too much. First Devek nearly dies, then that bastard (pardon my language, nobles) tries to steal my whole family. Now you say they may come again? I want to protect my family, but what are we supposed to do? I have to get the crops in the ground now. If I don't, we won't have food to eat in the fall. Why is this happening again? What are they trying to do with people in Orlane?" Embarrassed at his outburst, Abel tugs his forelock and looks down, mumbling "Chastise me if I have offended any of you Illustrious Ones; I am grateful that you deigned to warn us lowly peasants of the danger."
Apr 23, 2025 4:44 pm
Chase decides to leave the equipment where it is, and retraces his path back east to the place where the bandits attacked the party.
OOC:
Do you want to head directly east through the forest, or go the easier route on the road (heading a little south to get to the road, then east that way)? This is really just for flavor at this point - I don't roll more than once for random encounters in a day, and alone of the party, Chase can move about as fast through the forest as he moves on the road.

Aanbo nods, understanding the situation that Abel and Elista face. "We went to Orlane to find out why," he says. "Our friend is in the boneyard now as a result of that, and as Myrtha mentioned, another is missing. We could only learn that the trouble in Orlane runs deep, and that we were ill-prepared to delve that far down."

He sighs. "I would stay to help protect you while you gather your crops, however long that might take. But I fear that my attention here leaves others in danger." Aanbo indicates Bradley with a tip of his head.

"I am at a loss for a convenient solution. If you move to Hochoch now, maybe we can sell that equipment we confiscated from bandits; that might provide some funds for you to survive for the time being." Aanbo looks to his friends if they have alternatives in mind.
Apr 23, 2025 8:17 pm
"I say this with all due respect. Do what you will with what is yours. I serve the interests of the many. I simply do not think we can afford to be overly charitable at a time like this. We may need many allies if this group is half as big as I perceive it to be. As a man of necessity, I'm sure you understand, Abel."

OOC:
Chase just wants to confirm if the bandits came from Orlane of if the cult has an outpost in the dim somewhere and if they might also be using the undead. Once he has a good idea about that he will head back to the other camp sight and find a good hiding spot up in a tree to observe if those dead reanimate at night. Chase will stay in the woods.

At about the time that the rest of the party is arriving at the Jarls' house, Chase finishes his initial examination of the cliff-side campsite with all the dead adventurers. Satisfied that there is no obvious connection between the dead bodies and the bandits of the spiral, Chase heads back east for four hours to return to the site of the battle with the ambushing bandits. It is early afternoon when Chase finds the tracks he was following last night and resumes tracing them back to determine their origin. Engaged in this activity for a few (4) more hours, he determines three things:

1) The group of bandits came west, and there's been no sign that they crossed the Realstream River. This indicates that they almost certainly came from Orlane. They also were clearly looking for the Dungeon Busters.
2) During his exploration, Chase found the dead woman who confronted him last night lying half in, half out of a bush, unmoving and reeking. There are several other corpses nearby in similar states of decay; Chase figures these may have been the ones making the other noises he heard the previous night. The dead bodies seem to have been animated before; there are tracks showing how they moved aimlessly, then started following him until he far outpaced them, at which point they began to wander again. At some point, the animating magic ceased, and the cadavers collapsed where they stood.
3) This search took longer than Chase expected; it is suppertime now. While it is not dark yet, it is golden hour, and it will be dark in about an hour. It will be dark before he can get to any of the camp sites the party has used (he can move two hexes at normal speed or two and a half at fast speed).
[ +- ] Chase's Exploration Map
Will Chase:
a) find a new place to make camp nearby?
b) return to the campsite the party used last night (about 3 hours away at normal speed, 2 hours fast)?
c) return to the cliffside campsite with all the dead adventurers (about 6 hours away at normal speed, 4 hours fast)?

Back at the Jarls' house, Bradley interjects "I don't know if I'll feel safe anywhere again, since I was taken from right outside Hochoch!" Bradley sees the looks the Dungeon Busters give him at this not-helpful information, and he subsides, adding weakly. "...but it sure will feel safer being around other people than out here with just my family..."

Abel sighs, shaking his head. "Magnificent worthies, I appreciate your offer of assistance," he nods at Aanbo. In response to Jonel's reservations, Abel responds, "We would never dream of imposing on our betters, much less zeniths of virtue like the celebrated heroes of Dungeon Busters." Elista nods in agreement. "We are merely wondering to ourselves how we will live in a big city like Hochoch." Abel looks at Elista, some unspoken married-couple communication passing between them, and then they both nod. Abel slaps his knees and stands up. "The Paragons have told us that we must leave, so it must be so. Please, Mighty Ones, do not trouble yourselves on our account. Make yourselves comfortable while we get ready to return to the city...again." So saying, he and Elista leave the party in the kitchen/living room of the house with their food and drink, while Abel goes outside to round up the children and Elista begins packing upstairs.

Aanbo turns to the others. "I will accompany the Jarls, if any of you wish to head back to Hochoch immediately."
Apr 24, 2025 8:48 am
Seeing the difficult position this news put the Jarls in, and recalling her very own experience as a dirt poor peasant and her family's dependence on the natural cycle of the seasons, and of the imperatives of agricultural timing, Myrtha spoke up once more. She had a surprisingly solemn tone as she recited the next phrases.

"It is wise that you leave. And I am sure we are all committed to bring an end to these dangers as quickly as possible. Know this, Abel and Elista, if you are not back tilling your fields within a couple of weeks, and as long as I am alive, you will not live in destitution in Hochoch. You have been very generous to us, total strangers, and that generosity must be rewarded, by the gods! I will make sure that if you face difficult times in Hochoch, that I provide enough coin for you and your family to live a simple, decent life while your farm is too dangerous to work in."

Following Aanbo's example, she makes ready to lead the entire family back to Hochoch as swiftly as possible.
OOC:
"I'm ready to use my share of the loot taken from the Golden Grain Inn to help them find temporary accommodations — for months if need be", is what she means. She is, after all, a folk hero : these are her people, she will not let them down. And Theran is currently carrying a backpack worth of mixed coins found in Bertrand's chest. Let's put that stolen money to good use.

Chase being so absorbed in his tracking didn't realize how late it had gotten. He will make tracks to the camp sight they had used the night before. He will not rush so as not to take mane any undue noise and draw attention to himself. As he reenters the well hidden camp sight he will again weave his string and bell at the entrance for early warning. He will eat a quick meal then roll in his cloak to get some rest. He will have his spear right beside him for easy reach if needed.
OOC:
Did Chase see any prints around the dead woman? He heard movement around him when he confronted her the night before.

Ah, of course. There were several other corpses near the dead woman in various states of decay; Chase figures these may have been the ones making the other noises he heard the previous night. The dead bodies seem to have been animated before, as there are tracks leading up to their bodies. Backtracking, Chase saw how they had been moving aimlessly, then (probably when he showed up) started following him until he far outpaced them, at which point they began to wander again. At some point, the animating magic ceased, and the cadavers collapsed where they are now.

However, Chase heads back to Cecily's Road without incident, arriving at the road before it gets fully dark. Proceeding west cautiously, the ranger attracts no attention from any nocturnal creatures, despite lighting torches once night falls to see his way. It is almost three hours after nightfall when he finds the campsite he'd prepared the night before. Comfortable in solitude from his years as a boundary warden, Chase nevertheless takes some comfort in being in a familiar place where his friends and companion Dungeon Busters rested so recently. After setting his alarm lines, he quickly goes to sleep content in knowing that his friends are surely back safe in Hochoch by now.

"You'll do fine, I'm sure. Any man that can make it out here will eventually find his stride in the city."
He turns to Aanbo.
"I'll assume you'll want to travel with the other members of your group."
OOC:
Are the group and Chase still experiencing the same day?
Apr 24, 2025 5:45 pm
Aanbo considers Jonel's statement. "I want to escort the Jarls to Hochoch in case they are attacked on the road," he says. "What I said earlier was more for anyone that wanted to leave now instead of waiting; I don't want to hold anyone up just to accommodate my intentions."

Sensing that at least he and Myrtha would accompany the crofter family, Aanbo further explains himself to Jonel, "I know we just met. Mother Arkon, Manthis, and Rosemary have said they are Dungeon Busters, and for now while they are still strangers to me, I place my trust that we share the same goals. Olpert would not have sent them to help us if they did not.

"You, on the other hand, seem to have been caught up in all this trouble through no apparent fault of your own," he continues. "I apologize for having dragged you around the Dim. You are under no obligation to us or the Jarls, so if you wish to journey on your own from this point I can only bid you safe travels. That said, if you choose to stick with the Dungeon Busters as we head back to Hochoch, I can assure you that we will do all we can to protect you."

Lordish Manthis has no offerings of coin to give. Truth known he doesn't have so much himself. As always, he is a good dungeon buster and says with protector Myrtha and monk Aanbo, "We should make haste for Hochoch as surely the enemy is regrouping. Jarls will be safe with us."

Sword swinging Manthis seems to ignore monk Aanbo worries that they are the same in with the Dungeon Busters. He lets their last action show the truth above their words. And should we run into the bandits and like again, he will do the same again too. Considering the lack of introduction, it is obvious the Jarl's know Manthis, Arya, & Rosemary as Dungeon Busters.

He smiles and does say to Torren, "Appears you will hear tales during our travels." Entertainer Manthis seems to always have a tall tale to tell and entice his audience. He does well to play himself off as a bard but tales isn't what he does best. Being a Fire Fly is his best by trademark.

OOC:
Yes, but his narrative is ahead of yours by several hours. At this exact time in the day - when the seven heroes are waiting for the Jarls to get ready to leave - Chase has left the cliff-side campsite and is still hiking east through the forest toward the site of the ambush so he can resume his scouting.

OOC:
It seems like no one is taking Aanbo's suggestion to leave now?
Apr 25, 2025 1:21 am
OOC:
To be fair, it wasn't really a suggestion. It was more like, please don't feel like you have to wait for me if you wanted to leave now.
