Chapter 2.2: First Encounters in the Dim

Apr 2, 2025 5:59 am
After a few days in Orlane, the first group of heroes to visit that village has snuck out of that settlement to report the grim state of affairs to the rest of the Dungeon Busters...and to return the body of their fallen comrade, Reptile. Making their way through the wild, untamed Dim Forest was no less perilous, what with fighting territorial boars to rescuing a Hochoch cooper named Bradley who'd been kidnapped by troglodytes. Following the ranger of the group, they've managed to link back to Cecily's Road once more.

As those heroes were leaving Orlane and heading west, another group of heroes was heading east from Hochoch on Cecily's Road. But on their first night out from leaving the Jarl family croft, they made camp in the same spot where the sorcerer Jonel had tried to camp the night before. They then were attacked by the same undead who had nearly killed Jonel: a party of adventurers that had been killed and reanimated for some fell purpose. Together, the four heroes managed to escape with their lives and find another place to rest safely. But then they confronted a disgruntled ogrillon and slew him before he could eat Rosemary. Now, finding the undead quiescent in the daytime, they retrieved their equipment and resumed their eastward journey.

By Cecily's Road, Chase gestures to the others, and Bradley, Myrtha, Theran, and Aanbo settle down in the undergrowth, halting their movement through the brush to listen intently. Now that they aren't moving, they can hear faint snatches of conversation: people are talking to each other as they approach from the west on Cecily's Road! A breeze ruffles the leaves on the trees, drowning out the sound of voices for a moment.

As their group makes their way east down Cecily's Road, Arya is expounding to Rosemary (and Jonel and Manthis, who can't not listen) about her favorite subject: Pelor. A light wind from the east soughs through the trees, making the leaves overhead rustle.

With the shift in the wind, Theran suddenly gets a whiff of sour sweat from behind them - he turns and looks back: in the forest behind their group, he catches a glimpse of furtive figures moving in between the trees. As he sees them, they notice that he's turned around. "They see us!" one yells. "Very well, boys," an authoritative voice responds. "Just get them!"

Everyone, please roll initiative.
OOC:
I will post a map of your relative positions tomorrow, but the situation is this: some number of hostile people in the upper right of the map are attacking the "Orlane" group of heroes (the group returning from Orlane, which is near the road), and the four "Hochoch" heroes (the ones heading toward Orlane) are on the road on the left and can hear the fighting break out in the trees.
Apr 2, 2025 6:16 am
Aanbo is about to suggest waiting to see what type of group might be heading towards Orlane when the alarm is raised. "Do you think," he begins in rhetorical consideration, "that they snuck up on us? Or did we accidentally sneak through them?"

Myrtha settled the travois with Reptile's body softly on the ground, and observed the group coming down the road from Hochoch. When Theran raised the alarm, she realized that they were pinned between the newcomers and a clearly hostile group. "Aren't they tired of dying?" she stated, as she stood up, spinning around and raising her shield against the group behind her party

"The travois probably left a trail that was easy to follow," Theran said, his anger carried in his eyes and voice. Pulling himself to his full height instead of crouching in bushes, he glances to Myrtha and adds, "Who are we to deny them their favorite pastime?"

Theran plants the butt of his staff in the ground and holds it with both hands, ready to fight.

Round one
(this was followed by round two)

The Dungeon Busters are in two groups: one coming east on Cecily's Road, the other in the trees north of the road. There are a group of hostile humanoids who were trying to sneak up on them, but Theran detected them. We'll call these hostiles collectively "bandits."
[ +- ] Start of round one
[ +- ] Notes about the start of combat
Arya prays Pelor's blessing down on herself, Manthis, and Rosemary and hurries down the road, trying to talk the ambushers into peace. "Hold! In the name of Pelor, I command an immediate cessation of bloodshed!"
"We're outnumbered and wounded," says Aanbo. "I'll try and distract these bandits and give those travelers a chance to escape. Chase, can you give me some cover?" Aanbo begins rushing toward the nearest ambusher.
"You got it Aanbo." Chase slides around tree trunks, nocking an arrow, drawing, and then loosing the string as soon as he sees Three.
Three is hit for 7 piercing damage and staggers.
A moment later, Aanbo arrives, erupting out of the shrubbery to attack the wounded Three with his staff.
Three takes 10 bludgeoning damage and is out, dead or comatose.
"Things are about to get ugly, Bradley," Myrtha says, pushing the rescued cooper away from the ambush, "You head to those travellers there, and stay away from the fighting." Then Myrtha barrels through the underbrush to fling a handaxe at Two.
Two is hit for 4 slashing damage.
Theran calls upon the brotherhood of fungi that surrounds and permeates all living things.
Theran gains 8 temporary hit points and is filled with a necrotic righteousness as he imparts some of that power to his staff, which swells with vigor and new growth, spouting green shoots and dark buds. As his staff continues to bulge, blossoming with small black flowers, the druid jogs over to join Myrtha.
Manthis runs down the road, passing protectively in front of Arya, sword at the ready.
[ +- ] Bandit Ambush, middle of round one
Seeing the fighter's handaxe throw, Ambusher One raises a crossbow and sends a bolt at Myrtha. The bolt is lost in the foliage of the forest forever.
Staggered by the handaxe, Ambusher Two draws arrows, loosing one at Myrtha and another at Aanbo (the view of whom is partially blocked by a tree). The first skips off of the fighter's armor, the second thunks into the tree.
Ambusher Four ducks behind a tree to Hide...and disappears from view.
Ambusher Five finishes cocking his crossbow and sends a bolt at Aanbo, but the monk is too nimble and ducks.
"Don't you worry, boys!" Ambusher Six calls out, sauntering toward the Dungeon Busters, "Her power will strengthen your arms and will with supernatural might! Witness the WONDER!" With that pronouncement, a glowing club of fire appears, floating in the air by Aanbo, and swings at him. But the villain's monologue was too much warning, and the Earthshaker monk is able to leap back from the sizzling swings of the magic weapon.
Looking for the source of the arrow that hit his companion, Ambusher Seven spots Chase and sends a bolt from his crossbow at the ranger. Chase never even sees it, though he hears the whistle of its passing.

Hearing Aanbo mention 'bandits,' valiant little baker Rosemary clutches her paddle in one burly first and rushes toward the other Dungeon Busters just as they move away from her.
Jonel follows Manthis down the road, and calls to Bradley: "You there. Are you under attack?"
"YES!" Bradley shrieks, his nerves already shot from the previous ordeal. Bradley runs trustingly into the road and up to the armed heroes there. "Those people rescued me," the man points roughly in the direction of the other heroes, then points at the ambushers and adds, "and now those ruffians have ambushed us!!"

"We're outnumbered and wounded," says Aanbo. "I'll try and distract these bandits and give those travelers a chance to escape. Chase, can you give me some cover?"

Without waiting for Chase to reply, the monk hustles across the short clearing to get to the flank of Three. He thrusts his staff forward to try and pitch the bandit off-balance, while he uses the trees and his short stature to try and avoid any counterattack.
OOC:
Movement: 35 feet to the square west of Three.

A stark realization washed over Arya: this land was invested by evildoer and worst. It's just one thing after another since yesterday. "Hold! In the name of Pelor, I command an immediate cessation of bloodsheed!" Her tone brooked no argument. Not knowing people from both side or the reason behind this clash between strangers, she is not sure if they should take sides. Instead, she focused her divine energy, bestowing a protective blessing upon the companions she trusted.

Myrtha slapped Bradley on the back, before pushing him softly towards the unknown travellers.

"Things are about to get ugly, Bradley," she stated levelly, "You head to those travellers there, and stay away from the fighting".

And without another word, the warrior moved after Aanbo, hoping to link up with the powerful monk and form a line. As she closed in — but slower with her heavy armour —, she threw a hand axe at the closest target once in range (Bandit #3). Her experience in combat suggested that the axe throw was at best a glancing strike.

"Do you think you'll make it out of these woods, fellas?" she exclaimed at the massed ruffians. She tried to project more confidence than she really had in her.
OOC:
Movement = diagonally following roughly the same path as Aanbo, full 30ft movement.
Attack = thrown hand axe at short range (hits AC14 for 4 damage)
Bonus action = curse internally in silence.

Theran draws on the power of nature all around them, channeling that force through himself and into his staff before moving forward with Myrtha and Aanbo. A smile, brief as it was, plays across the Wood Elf's lips as the air around him -- unknowingly to anyone else -- explodes into life... and death.

Round two
(this was preceded by round one, followed by round three)

Arya yells "Ah, we're with the Dungeon Busters, too! Let's deal with these bandits first; we can sort out the rest later!" while running to join the others in the trees.
Chase pulls, nocks, draws, and releases a shaft at Ambusher Six.
Ambusher Six is hit for 11 piercing damage.
Aanbo dodges past the glowing club and rushes Ambusher Six, striking with his staff!
Ambusher Six takes 8 bludgeoning damage.
Myrtha runs up, bulling past Ambusher Two and slashes at Ambusher Six with her sword!
Ambusher Six takes 7 slashing damage.
Theran moves to flank Ambusher Two and attacks, battering the villain with his dark-blooming shillelagh!
Ambusher Two takes 4 bludgeoning and 5 necrotic damage!
Manthis runs forward, yelling "Begone bandits!" as he rushes to solidly confront Ambusher Two.

https://i.imgur.com/8Fs32xh.jpeg

Ambusher One loads his crossbow and looses a bolt at Chase! Again, the aim fails.
Ambusher Two whips out a short sword and attacks Myrtha! His attack is thrown off by Theran's savagery, and he misses!
Having hidden from view, Ambusher Four has snuck through the undergrowth unseen and springs out to attack Theran! The short sword bites deep into the druid!
Theran takes 10 piercing damage!
Ambusher Five coughs on Theran's spores!
Ambusher Five takes 2 necrotic damage!
Then Five looses a bolt at Arya, but it whizzes harmlessly past her head!
Having been hit by a fusillade of blows, Ambusher Six yells "I'm in trouble, boys! HELP!" but it is clear that he is speaking not just to his fellow ruffians, but to unseen evil spirits. A cloud of such spirits answers his call, erupting from the air to swirl around their friend, attacking those hostile to him.
Aanbo, Myrtha, Theran, and Manthis are all caught within the cloud; each of them needs to roll a WIS saving throw at the start of their next turns if they are still in the area of the spell (if this happens, they will then take 20 necrotic damage on a fail, or 10 on a success).
The glowing club pursues Aanbo and strikes him from behind!
Aanbo takes 8 bludgeoning damage!
Ambusher Seven looses a bolt at Chase! This time, the attacker hits his mark!
Chase takes 8 piercing damage!
Rosemary runs forward after Arya, feeling the rage building within her. When Ambusher Four leaps out to attack Theran, she flings a javelin at the villain. Even at that extreme distance, she manages to throw true!
Ambusher Four takes 2 piercing damage.
Jonel runs toward the fighting, keeping low to make a smaller target for the crossbowmen. He runs up to Arya and, seeing the demonic spirits whirling nearby, yells: "We have to do something before they die in there!"

Round two, continued...
OOC:
Note: editing to insert Theran's move (cross-posted with the attacks), Rosemary's DISADV for the long-distance throw, and to make clear that the area effect spell won't affect the characters until the start of their next turns...
Theran moves to flank Ambusher Two and attacks, battering the villain with his dark-blooming shillelagh!
Ambusher Two takes 4 bludgeoning and 5 necrotic damage!
Aanbo, Myrtha, Theran, and Manthis are all caught within the cloud; each of them needs to roll a WIS saving throw at the start of their next turns if they are still in the area of the spell. They will take 20 necrotic damage on a fail, or 10 on a success.

@KidEnnui - as a human, Jonel's move is 30. That corresponds to 6 five-foot squares. I've moved Jonel six spaces; he can now use his action for something else. It could be to move further, it could be to attack, it could be something else. Post how you'd like to use Jonel's action now. If you were to attack, I'd recommend targeting Six with an attack!

Rescued cooper Bradley runs down Cecily's Road a ways, then turns back, torn between the desire to get away and the fear of being along in the dangerous forest.
OOC:
This is very grim, folks. Unless I made a mistake or someone has a reaction that could prevent it, at least two but as many as four of the party members are going down next round (depending on the saving throws). Ambusher Six - the spellcaster - is very badly hurt, as is Ambusher Two. Taking them out will go a long way to evening the odds.

I’ve played clerics many times, and never have I managed to do so much damage with spirit guardians! Gotta love the randomness of DnD though, that’s how the game’s supposed to be!

Let’s see if she lives out this round.

EDIT: Noooooope!

EDIT 2: just realized that as long as we are alive and within the area of effect, we’ll have to roll wisdom saves and, upon failure, fail one or two death saves. So yeah, I guess I’d better start rolling a new character! :-D

Unless it is a variant spell, it is a continuing effect, so it will hit us every round as long as the cleric maintains concentration. Anyone who starts their round in the area will take damage — full on a failed Wis save, half on a successful save.

Well then Unlucky Manthis is doomed. With currently 1 HP and will be starting his turn in the cloud means it is automatically going to eat his 1 hp before he can do anything.

This is assuming his 17 saved in the first place.

I made this decision due to the actions of the enemies.

It's up to you, of course. But I'll point out that Ray of Frost has a range of 60', which is well within range of where you were after your move action.
Fire Bolt, another cantrip Jonel knows, has a range of 120', so it could also reach.

Please if the damage is at the begining of the round, is it possible for Arya to enter the cloud, drag someone out and heal him without siffering the 20 dmg?
OOC:
No, the spell would take effect immediately on anyone entering its area for the first time on their turn.
Nebula says:
Since she wasn't designated at the time the spell was cast she should be fine?
OOC:
This spell doesn't specify targets (though it does allow the caster to exclude targets, like his allies); it's just an entire area that is affected. Anyone that enters such a spell's area will be affected when they enter (the first time they enter on a turn - which means that if a person were to move into the area, then move out, then move in again on the same turn, they'd only be affected once, not twice).
Nebula says:
We are level 1, so we will explode to -10 if fail that save.
OOC:
That's true. Arya has 10 HP: failing the save would mean instant death for her, no death saves (since it is instant death to take damage from a single attack that would bring you to a negative value of your maximum HP). Succeeding on the saving throw would just mean that she was down and dying (ie, making death saves at 0 HP).

Given that, @Nebula, do you still want Arya to run into the area? The spell would affect her before she could reach the enemy to attack with the warhammer. If, on the other hand, there was a ranged attack she could make without entering the area, she wouldn't be affected. Is there something like that you'd want to do?

Jonel recognizes that the spell that has been cast is a summoning of spirits that has the following characteristics:
- it is maintained by the caster's concentration
- it makes all the terrain within its area Difficult Terrain
- characters who enter the area are immediately affected when they enter
- each character in the spell's area is affected again at the start of their turn
- the demonic spirits ravage the affected people with necrotic damage (3d8 necrotic damage)
- the damage can be reduced with a strong will (that is to say, a successful WIS save halves the damage).

Round three
(this was preceded by round two, followed by round four)

As round three begins, Arya, Jonel, Rosemary, and Chase are all watching in horror as their other four teammates - Aanbo, Manthis, Myrtha, and Theran - are engulfed in swirling demonic spirits that will surely kill them if nothing is done to stop the spirits (or the spell that Six has cast to summon them). There are, of course, five other ambushers as well (One, Two, Four, Five, and Seven).

https://i.imgur.com/Bjsoqys.jpeg

Arya yanks out her crossbow, cocks it, loads a quarrel, and, with a cry resounding with Pelor's wrath, triggers the release. The crossbow leaps in her hands, and a bolt sinks into Six's chest, blood blossoming on his robes.
Ambusher Six takes 3 piercing damage! "No...!" he yells.
With a shriek of the host of damned souls, the demonic spirits dissipate like smoke as Six loses concentration on his spell.
Refusing to be distracted by his own injuries, Chase pulls another arrow from his quiver, nocks, draws on the inhale, aims, and releases with the exhale. Like Arya's before this, the ranger's aim is true: a feathered shaft appears in Six's breastbone.
Ambusher Six takes 9 piercing damage and dies. The glowing club winks out of existence like a snuffed candle flame.
[ +- ] Arya and Chase finish off the bandit priest
Seeing the enemy priest feathered with arrows, Aanbo moves to the next target and attacks with his staff, swinging hard at Ambusher Two's legs. Two leaps over the staff, and Aanbo kicks him hard in the gut while he's in midair. Two lands on his side and does not get up again.
Two takes 6 damage and is out.
Seeing that Aanbo has that enemy handled, Myrtha rushes over to help badly-injured Theran and attacks Ambusher Four, who manages to dodge the incoming sword.
Swinging his swollen staff as funky dust cascades off of him, Theran attacks Ambusher Four as well, but the crafty bandit ducks and weaves with a smirk.
[ +- ] Two goes down
Nobly Manthis runs up and attempts to cleave into Ambusher Four...but like with all the others, Four is able to evade his attacks with a ever-more-contemptuous grin.

Ambusher One draws a scimitar and runs toward the closest hero - Theran - attempting to disembowel him. Myrtha interposes her shield to defend her druid companion, knocking the blade aside before it can sink into Theran's back.
"You thought you'd gang up on me, eh?" Ambusher Four, short sword still dripping with Theran's blood, chuckles, then is wracked with coughing as the druid's spores rip into the lining of his lungs.
Ambusher Four takes 7 necrotic damage.
Through his coughing, he tries to put a brave face on things, with a wheezing laugh. "You did me a favor - now I'll lead this squad! Too bad I've got to kill you all!" whereupon Four attacks both Myrtha and Manthis.
Manthis is able to deflect the blow, but Myrtha, leaning to defend Theran, is too exposed. The blade bites deep.
Myrtha takes 16 piercing damage and falls, dying.
Four cackles and then disengages with the heroes and backpedals away from them. "You know what she told us, boys! NO MERCY!"
"Slade! No!" Ambusher Five is distressed at Aanbo's dispatching his friend, Two (who was apparently called 'Slade'); Five draws a scimitar and runs forward, intending to get revenge for Slade's death by killing the monk. His swings are wild, and the dwarf easily avoids the blade with minimal effort.
"You don't need to tell ME," Ambusher Seven shakes his head in response to Four's shout. "I know my job." As usual, though, his companions are ignoring the real threat of the ranged attackers. He hurries forward, slotting another bolt in his crossbow, and attacks the one who first shot their leader, Six: Arya. The crossbow bolt stops an inch short of Arya's face, punched halfway through her shield.

Rosemary yells and runs toward Ambusher Four. She doesn't know Myrtha yet, but she recognizes bad guys, she saw how Four attacked Manthis, AND she heard Four's yell about "No Mercy!"
[ +- ] Myrtha is down
As yet unnoticed by Ambusher Four, pulse pounding in her ears, raging Rosemary runs up and hits him cleanly at the base of the skull with the side of her paddle.
Ambusher Four takes 14 bludgeoning damage and dies instantly, his dreams of leading this band extinguished.

"Let's clean up this mess!" Jonel says to Arya, releasing a searing gout of flame from his outstretched hand, which jets across the forest in between the trees, to scorch Ambusher Seven.
Ambusher Seven takes 10 fire damage. He screams but remains standing.
Bradley watches in horrified fascination as, once again, the heroes who rescued him massacre what initially seemed like an overwhelming threat.

The scene was a horrifying tableau of carnage: splintered bones jutted from limbs, the grass was slick with crimson, and the air was thick with the ragged breaths of the dying. No sermon or stained-glass window in the grand cathedral could have prepared Arya for the brutal capacity of sentient beings to inflict such devastation. Yet, muscle memory took over. She raced to Myrtha's side, finding the warrior submerged in a spreading pool of her own blood. "Great Pelor," Arya cried out, her voice raw with urgency, "lend your divine light! Heal this brave warrior's wounds, that her fight against the encroaching darkness may continue in your glorious name!"

Gesh. The dice rolls picked were off. The 1d20 was suppose to be 1d20+2.. so the 18 roll is a 20 +2 Bless is 22 and the damage is 13.

Ignore the many rolls. I love when the system drops in the middle of editing for a few minutes. It causes lots of grief and makes it hard to keep a train of thought. System greatly sucks about this and OFTEN.

Round four
(this was preceded by round three)

Shaken by the ferocity and brutality, Arya nevertheless runs forward to aid the fallen warrior, Myrtha. "Great Pelor," Arya cries out, crouching to press her hands against Myrtha's gushing wounds, "lend your divine light! Heal this brave warrior's wounds, that her fight against the encroaching darkness may continue in your glorious name!" Pelor hears her prayer.
Myrtha is healed for 9 HP and is no longer dying. Her vision clears and she finds herself prone with a kindly stranger leaning over her.

Chase pulls, nocks, draws, aims, and releases, but the arrow just misses Ambusher Seven.

https://i.imgur.com/VQRhRlK.jpeg

"You have our thanks, traveler," Aanbo thanks Arya while retaliating against Bandit Five with staff blows and fierce kicks.
Bandit Five takes 7 bludgeoning damage.

Myrtha blinks groggily as she feels her flesh begin to heal. "Thank you" she says to Arya's concerned face leaning over her as the fighter's hand reflexively reaches out and finds her sword grip. The act of finding her voice and holding her sword strengthens her resolve.
Myrtha gains 8 more HP from Second Wind.
Grateful that Aanbo has kept the enemy busy during all this, Myrtha then rolls over to stand up and attack Ambusher Five all in one motion. The sword, coming from an unexpected direction, slides under his defenses and in between his ribs.
Ambusher Five takes 11 damage and falls dead.

Swaying on his feet, Theran taps into the the pulsing life force of the mycelium network beneath his feet and feels vigor restored to his body.
Theran gains 4 HP.

Manthis growls low in his throat, both hands tight on the grip of his greatsword, and stomps toward Ambusher One, swinging the long blade in whistling arcs over his head. Ambusher One sees his doom in those fierce eyes and attempts to defend himself with his scimitar. But Manthis' scything blade knocks the much-smaller blade aside, and the next rotation brings the sword cleaving into the bandit's ribcase with a crunch.
Ambusher One takes 13 slashing damage and dies instantly.

If he weren't in the thick of battle, Ambusher Seven might realize the predicament that he's in, but at the moment, all the sees is that Rosemary has knocked down his buddy and expected leader, Four (he's a little slow on the uptake and didn't see where the fire that scorched him came from). So he loads his crossbow and attempts to get some payback against the little barbarian. The bolt whistles over her head.

As he is fumbling for the next bolt to slot into his crossbow, furious Rosemary is already upon him, clubbing him with her paddle in the knees, the gut, and across the head.
Ambusher Seven takes 6 bludgeoning damage.

Jonel squints and aims as he draws back his hands, marshalling the energy from within. His hands ignite, and then he thrusts them forward, hurling another gout of fire searing across the forest and over Rosemary's head to engulf Ambusher Seven in flames!
Ambusher Seven takes 10 fire damage and dies screaming.

Sorry was very busy the last couple of days.
Myrtha’s eyes opened wide in a moment of surprise followed by pain, and then relief. She took in a huge breath as her lungs were no longer being filled by the blood flowing from the cloven arteries on her side. Next to her, knelt this unknown young beauty. At first she thought that the beliefs of some warrior folk must be true, and that one was greeted by angelic maidens in the afterlife. Then the sounds of trampling feet and expiring lives invaded her conscience. She realized she was not in some version of heaven, but back in the Dim, laying in a puddle of her own dark blood.

Her expression was confused as she realized that the happy tingling of mending flesh and sinew came from this unknown woman. She was as at a loss of words as her free hand reached around her, looking for the comfort of cold steel.

"Thank you," she stated in confusion as she began rolling over to kneel and then stand up. The fracas of combat all around her she took one deep breath to focus on the immediate need of survival, and then she was back into the fray.

The closest bandit insisted on fighting their party, despite being outnumbered. Myrtha gave a tentative swing to get back into the mood for killing.

Aanbo looks to the road, trying to see if Bradley is still around. "You seem to be headed towards Orlane," he continues. "If you intend to pass through, I advise you do not tarry. If Orlane is your destination, I advise you turn around and head back to Hochoch, or make other arrangements." The monk shakes some dirt out of his hair and kicks at the knee of Five's leg. The cleric is a striking tanned woman with long, flowing black hair and almond-shaped eyes. Tall and graceful, she possesses a natural elegance that borders on arrogance. Born and raised within the opulent cathedral of Pelor in Gorna, Arya is a prodigy. Her innate magical talent and unwavering faith quickly set her apart from her peers. This, combined with her stunning beauty, fostered a sense of entitlement within her. Arya grew accustomed to admiration and deference, often viewing others with a condescending air. "Um, yes, thank you," says Aanbo. "Well, considering how you knew my name, you have no doubt been given our descriptions by someone, which leads me to believe you were looking for us. Since you mentioned the Dungeon Busters, I assume Sir Oliver was the one that gave you this information?

"Sorry for all the questions,"
he says as he looks at Theran, his eyes hardened into a warning. "A wise old weasel I once met told me that we can never be too careful around these parts."

Description: Manthis is a husky large man in his twenties. Found in common clothing or chain mail. Always with a greatsword & a whip. Pack on a backpack and he is ready to travel. Sometimes you can hear him coming as he likes to play his pan flute. He speaks Imperial (common) & Keolish (Local)

Myrtha observed the exchange and could not miss her companion’s underlying tension. Stretching up to reach her full size, she turned to the newcomers and spoke with a more authoritative voice.

"Yo! Manthis, is it? Answer my friend’s question, now: WHO sent you?"

There was an obvious edge in her voice as if she were steeling herself in preparation for further violence. Her eyes focused on the swordsman, but they also jumped to the other three newcomers.

https://gamersplane.com/characters/avatars/31873.jpg?1739084733 Questioned Manthis slowly turns about to face questioning Myrtha, "Why Olpert. Chief Olpert Razorson of the local Dungeon Busters, did as we are Dungeon Busters. No idea who this Sir Oliver is? Olpert said you would be in Orlane. Dealing with a bandit situation."

As he gazes more about, "One of your number is messing by my count and why would we be advised to make other arrangements? And not proceed to Orlane?

Seems questioned Manthis is also starting to show concern but seems firm in his answer.

He fills in more, "And some as call me 'Manthis the mask' my dear. All three of us are on our first task. Jonel there. We rescued from some unsightly undead. We would have been here sooner except we made an excursion into the dim forest on the way."

The monk visibly relaxes, his toes stretching out across the soil. He nods to each person he names. "Well, thank you for that, Manthis the Mask. Mother Arkon. Jonel Steele. And Rosemary."

Drawing a rosary of large rounded stones strung with metal, he slowly rolls each bead through his rough and calloused palm. "I am Aanbo, of the Dungeon Busters. We have come from Orlane... well, fled should be more accurate. There are things going on in Orlane that are much too big for our small group, so we're returning to Hochoch to report to Olpert, recover ourselves, and see to our companion's memory. I'm honestly not in the mood to explain everything right now, so if you want to know the details I suggest you come with us."

Listening Manthis isn't overjoyed about what he now hears of Orlane, "Seems that Orlane just isn't a good play." as he glances to Arya, Rosemary, & Jonel. He appears to be rather disappointed about the news.

"Okay then we still unite as planned and travel back to Hochoch. We are Dungeon Busters."

"Seems that we have plenty of time to get to know each other for this trip." as he ponders. No nice bed, no snacks, nothing but dead trail rations and his bedroll. He suspects lots of time to play his pan flute.

After Aanbo and Manthis spoke again, Myrtha relaxed and sheathed her sword. In a completely different tone of voice she addressed the four strangers.
"Thank you for your assistance. We would’ve probably met our ends here without it. I’m Myrtha, of Three Elms Crossing. We’ll have time to catch up on the way… now let me go fetch Reptile."

And saying this, she slung her shield on her back and headed off into the woods.

He agreeingly heads off with caring Myrtha to fully help with the lost one's travois. With sword swinger Manthis being rather husky & protecting Myrtha not being a weakling herself, they together make an easy team for bringing back the handy travois with dead Reptile on it.

Jonel bristles a bit at the hostile treatment they are receiving, relaxing a bit once the mood shifts. "Last I checked, we were fighting the same enemy.
Gods, I don't know what we'd do without Arya."

"I hope you'll forgive my test of your knowledge," says Aanbo as the group prepares to journey. "Just know that the enemy favors deception, and will play the part of the good host while poisoning your food or knifing you in the back. We will explain more once we report to Olpert."

When Chase returns, Aanbo asks, "Did they bear the spiral mark? And if so, any of them a pendant or medallion? Something we can bring back with us to show the rest of the Dungeon Busters and the Reeve."

As the others spoke, Arya meticulously searched the fallen evil cleric, driven by a need to understand his allegiance and motives. Undead and now this wicked cleric – a disturbing pattern was emerging in this region.

She caught snippets of their conversation. "I'm simply glad I could be of service and that you all survived," she offered sincerely. - " Unfortunately i wasn't there to save your friend. "

If permitted, Arya carefully examined reptile's corpse, then knelt, offering a quiet prayer to guide its soul in its final journey.

"Returning to Hochoch?" she inquired, her brow furrowed slightly. "Don't you think our leader will simply ask us to address this problem together? Though," she conceded, nodding towards the reptile, "burying your friend in town is a good reason to head back regardless."

"Believe me when I say we did not make the decision to leave lightly," Aanbo replies, his lips tightening at the thought of the nights spent in hiding. "I've no doubt that we will go to Orlane again, but I think we should be better prepared. And it's better to plan in the safety of Hochoch and the Dungeon Busters than out here in the Dim."

He looks to the road, hoping to spot Bradley. "Plus, the town ought to know to be watchful of kidnappings. Olpert can help organize a guard rotation or escorts for Hochoch's people.

mathias0077 says:
Chase after checking and looting all the bodies Chase will comeback to the group...
The corpse of the priest who led the raiders (the one we called "Six") has a livid scar from a spiral brand that was burned into his skin on his chest long enough ago to have healed completely. He also bore a small silver holy symbol of the harvest goddess, Merikka: two crossed sheaves of grain. The hunter (the one we called "Two") had a good longbow and a quiver with 9 brown-feathered arrows (Chase figures they're probably hawk feathers), a serviceable short sword, a wallet with a couple of recently-killed partridges, and a spiral pendant carved of olivine, jade, or some other greenish precious stone, hung on a silken cord. The second-in-command (the one we called "Four") had a silver ring on each hand, a similar spiral pendant hung on braided copped wire, and a pretty good short sword. All the others had no spiral marking or ornaments, but had swords, knives, and crossbows. Chase makes a pile of these things in front of the others as Myrtha retrieves the travois with Reptile's stiff body strapped to it: there are six short swords, a holy symbol of Merikka, three light crossbows (a fourth one was broken when the bandit fell dead on it), two silver rings, four small quivers containing a total of 18 crossbow bolts, a long quiver with 9 arrows, two dead partridges, a longbow, seven small knives, and two green spiral pendants.

In examining the bodies and stripping them of everything valuable, Chase is struck by two things:
1) All of them were lean to the point of being malnourished
and
2) None of them had any money, despite having pouches that could be used to carry cash. Normal people tend to carry money on their persons: villages and towns rarely have banks, so people either carry their money with them or squirrel it away in their homes. But even when they hide it, they usually keep some coins on their person to be able to buy a meal or a drink when away from home. None of these men carried any money on them.

It is mid-afternoon now. Both parties have been hiking for more than half a day (and the group coming from Orlane was both dragging Reptile and not using the Road).
There are (at least) these three things to decide as a group:
1) how to divide the spoils of the bandits: who is going to carry what?
2) will you look for a place to camp, or try to push through and hike all night to arrive in Hochoch sooner? There is a day and a half of travel - about 24 hours of solid marching - to get back to Hochoch.
3) will you swing by the previous campsite to pick up the rest of the loot left by the undead on the way back west?
Apr 13, 2025 7:22 am
With Manthis’ company, Myrtha is swift to return with Reptile’s body. She does not oppose Arya’s ministrations, though it is obvious that the warrior-woman has a rather protective stance around the body of their fallen comrade.

"The ones with the spirals seem to be the ringleaders, the true believers… what’s that symbol?" Myrtha asked pointing to the clerical symbol of Merikka. She wondered if this was an evil religious cult, but not being well-versed in matters theological she looked at the one called Mother Arkon, and hoped she might explain.
OOC:
1) Myrtha could use a ranged weapon, seeing that all she has are the throwing axes at her belt. The longbow and some arrows, preferably, but a crossbow could work as well. The rest of the gear, and in particular the higher quality items might deserve a detect magic spell being cast on them, I guess. My reptilianOSR brain says we should take all the plunder we can carry, but I don’t know how much we can take along.
2) I’m against a forced march, but in favor of of putting more miles between the party and Orlane, they might still be sending search parties after us.
3) Myrtha is unaware of the loot left behind, but wouldn’t mind a short detour for more treasure (though we have a backpack full of coin, and a few other baubles taken from the Inn).

Chase will report all he found."This is definitely a cult of some sort. These people are so far into it they don't even seem to eat or keep themselves as they should." Looking at the pile of loot"We could build a second travois to haul the loot on." Looking at the condition of the group"We should travel a little farther today then make camp. It has been a hard few days for all of us. I will keep my eyes open for a good camp sight. We have the boar and these partridges to eat." Then he will move Aanbo to the side for a talk"Maybe after we make camp maybe I should come back here and backtrack this group and see where they came from."
Apr 13, 2025 3:35 pm
Aanbo considers Chase's suggestion, rolling the prayer beads through his fingers. "I am hesitant to agree," he says. "I know you are skilled in tracking and comfortable moving through the forest, but I worry that this group was not the only one roaming around. The rest of us are too hurt to accompany you, and... well, honestly I'm not sure if we could even keep up with you if we weren't."

The monk clasps his hands together within the sleeves of his robes. "If you are confident that you can move as water flows through the earth, that your steps will not echo in the cavernous spaces between, and if you feel this is important enough to venture alone into danger, then gathering that information would be important. I would suggest that if faced with a rockfall, you would choose to flee instead of pushing through."
Regarding the question of next steps, Aanbo suggests the party take Cecily's Road and find a place to camp near the thoroughfare. He is ambivalent about returning to the other campsite, finding no reason to agree nor dissent in that option, and only offers himself as a porter for anything that ought to be carried back to Hochoch.

From the spoils of the most-recent battle, Aanbo will take one (if not both) of the spiral medallions in order to show Olpert the mark of the cultists. Olpert and the other Dungeon Busters might have better results in researching the symbol.
OOC:
Aanbo wouldn't mind one of the shortswords to complement his quarterstaff, but he doesn't need anything else. He will help carry whatever we decide to take, of course.

https://i.pinimg.com/originals/ce/ae/dd/ceaeddfa938824e65b2ebf5522a05c7c.jpg Helpful Manthis will work hard with what is about to produce a means to haul loot effectively. Any one's help doing this effort is fantastic. He appears to be no expect at it. Looking heavy at the other means for aid in production.

Manthis portrays himself as countryside man. Easy to spot that he has had no schooling after you have been around him. Obviously from this local area or somewhere nearby one. He appears to be rather simple minded. You will not ever hear any complex plans from him. Despite being a no planner, he will be on to lead the direction decided.

He will toss that previous falchion that he has been carrying in there too with the loot. "We can pick up some more that we left at a previous site. No sense in leaving anything." and no doubt that he will be hauling it too so there will be no pan flute play while traversing the way.

Side note: Although earlier he had attacked the bandits to aide others but there as another reason as Manthis has hatred for bandits and their like. His past history has left a mark on him. To be sure he wanted them all dead. And surely would have refused any notion to keep any alive. The only good bandit/raider is a dead one.

Apr 13, 2025 8:04 pm
Before leaving the corpses, Myrtha stared for a while at the fallen cleric.

"Should we take this one’s head, to show back in Hochoch? Maybe people from the churches there might identify him."
OOC:
Not sure if it’s a good idea. Perhaps a speak with dead could be arranged. Or maybe the church of America might know who this person is, and might want to know why he’s taken to assaulting travellers.

Edit 1: Myrtha can help Manthis put together something to help haul the loot, if necessary.

Edit 2: My character isn’t privy to the discussion between Aanbo and Chase, but as a player I wonder how far he should follow this trail on his own. We’ve run into bears, bandits, wild boars… not sure it is worth splitting the party.

He does some small talk with Myrtha as they worked together. Sword swinging Manthis been traveling with gorgeous Arya for some time now, but he appears to rather talk with down to the earth Myrtha. Seems he is taking a liking to Myrtha.

He does inform friendly her that he is also called "The Mask" before he joined Dungeon Busters. He was their star performer with the Fantastic Fearless Fireflies. "Carving up dead flesh seems unnecessarily gruesome. A detailed drawing or the spiral medallion would suffice for identification," she added with a slight grimace, "and carrying around a rotting head is not something I would be comfortable with, especially if we are to travel together."

She continued, holding up the holy symbol of Merikka, "I believe these people were likely victims of some kind of brainwash. As Chase mentioned, their concern for basic human needs was absent. Merikka is a benevolent goddess of agriculture, not a deity of evil cults. Something has overridden their free will, whether through magic or twisted conviction, I cannot say for certain."

At the mention of Olpert, Theran shifts a little as not to lean so heavily on his staff. It's relatively subtle, but it speaks volumes for those listening.

He idles nearby until such time as the group is ready to continue their trek.

Rosemary takes a deep breath. "Well, I don't know about you guys, but I'm hungry and am ready to make some food."

"We have the pendants," says Aanbo, putting one of the green spiral medallions in his pack and holding the other out to Arya. "You seem to know about religious symbols, why don't you hold onto this one for future study?"

The monk considers Myrtha's suggestion. "If we assume this person was from the temple in Orlane, do you think Diana of Rao would know of him? If she is familiar with her neighbors, we can just describe him to her without the head. If she's not... well, I doubt a head will help."

Aanbo gives the long bow and quiver with 9 arrows to Myrtha. For himself, the monk measures the weight of Four's shortsword before tucking the scabbard into his pack. Since Jonel appears interested in a couple of the short blades, Aanbo doesn't question the interest in taking two of them; he does, however, hand both of the rings to Theran for safekeeping.
OOC:
Meta-game, I know Speak With Dead can work on the head, but Aanbo doesn't know about such power.

Currently-confiscated equipment:
1 light crossbow, 1 quiver with 6 bolts, and 2 shortswords = Jonel
1 shortsword and 1 spiral pendant = Aanbo
Two dead partridges = Chase
Two silver rings = Theran
Long bow and quiver = Myrtha
Holy symbol of Merikka and 1 spiral pendant = Arya

Apr 15, 2025 2:37 am
OOC:
I assume this means that we're revisiting the previous camp that Arya, Jonel, Manthis, and Rosemary used. And that our intention is to make camp there among the dead adventurers. Aanbo trusts Chase to determine whether or not the site is secure before he leaves on his tracking expedition.

Quick question, are the small knives considered daggers (1d4 piercing), or are they more like utility blades?
Apr 15, 2025 3:14 am
Jonel approaches Aanbo, turning away from Bradley as he speaks.
"Listen, friend. I know we're in no position to be placing blind trust in anyone. This kid over here, Bradley. How sure can you be that he's not some spy or zealot? Giving someone the benefit of the doubt can often turn sour."
OOC:
So I think Chase is checking out our old campsite. Any chance the bulk of the group could make for town while he brings back the other loot, perhaps with company?
Apr 15, 2025 3:38 am
"How can I be sure you're not the spy or zealot?" Aanbo asks in contemplation, mulling over the many possible answers. "You've helped us in battle... I think? But you have said so yourself; you are a stranger. Whereas Bradley (who is hardly a kid) is known to Hochoch."

He tucks his prayer beads into his robe. "Perhaps I am the spy. I am not known to you; all you have is the word of your recent companions, whom you've just met. Perhaps I am the danger that threatens your safety." Aanbo shoulders his pack, already laden with unclaimed weapons and ammunition, and looks at Jonel for his response.
OOC:
Chase is attempting to track where the bandits came from. We are too far away from Hochoch to make it in one non-stop trip, so ideally we'd camp somewhere safe. Whether that's at the former campsite or somewhere else hasn't been decided.
Apr 15, 2025 3:53 am
"Distrust comes easy in my profession. One sees daggers pointed at him when there are none. I'll just say that, if anything should befall these I travel with due to your misplaced trust, the blame will fall squarely on your shoulders."

The latter: not weapons, but rather small tools that most everyone carries on them for tasks like eating, repairing small items, cutting cords, etc.

Aanbo meditates over the thought. "In other words, you see no daggers coming from me?" he asks. "You find Bradley capable of harming us, but sense no threat from my friends? What reasons do you have for this choice, as it appears a bit arbitrary to me?"

The monk's demeanor is inquisitive, very interested in the answer.

The party heads out west On Cecily's Road, Manthis pulling one travois and Myrtha pulling the other. Fleet in his natural element, Chase roves ahead and finds a fine place for camping, a little bit to the south of the Road (the campsite with all the dead bodies and undead gear would still be three hours' further hike west). Heading back east, he meets the rest of the group on the Road and gives directions on how to spot the blazes he's left for them to follow to get to the campsite. Then, bidding them good fortune, he leaves the group and continues east until he finds their most recent battlefield. From there, he backtracks, easily finding the path they took through the Forest by the drag track of Reptile's travois. It's easy for him to see that the bandits just followed their obvious track. But periodically he stops and examines the area in greater detail, confirming that it's the same number of followers rather than a larger group where some people had split off to create trouble for them later. He does not find trace of that, but as the sun is setting, he discovers the point where the bandits joined their trail.
OOC:
Chase can roll an INT (Nature) check (with ADV) to see how well he follows these tracks as night falls.

At around the same time, the rest of the Dungeon Busters arrive at the campsite with Theran (who is best able to identify the blazes that Chase has made) leading the way and Aanbo bringing up the rear, ready to help anyone who might stumble in the growing darkness. Chase had already arranged a circle of stones to make a fire ring with a pile of tinder and kindling in the center.
OOC:
As you hike along the trail, lay out your bedrolls, and sit around the fire, I encourage each of the PCs to share one anecdote or story with the others. It could be from their personal history, something they heard, a legend, a rumor, a ghost story, or anything: just a brief post to represent a part of the conversation that has happened for the last three or four hours of travel.
Apr 15, 2025 9:56 am
Chase heads out after letting the group know where the camp sight is and how to find it. He quickly returns to the sight of the fight and backtracks to where the thugs found their trail. In the waning light he has to pause to get a good read on their tracks.
OOC:
Chase is hoping to get a read on if they came from Orlane or a different direction.

Throughout their short journey, Arya radiated her usual cheerful demeanor, her humming and singing a constant melody. The morning's brutal violence seemed unable to dim her inner light or disturb her peaceful countenance. Arriving at the campsite, however, a flicker of hesitation crossed her face before she considered removing her armor. The memory of the undead ambush was still vivid. "Thank you for preparing the fire," she said with genuine gratitude. "Let's ensure we have a vigilant watch tonight, so we aren't caught off guard again."
Apr 15, 2025 4:33 pm
Aanbo used one of the small knives to carve feather sticks and speed up the ignition of the campfire. The cured and smoked boar meat is carved and distributed to everyone as part of the repast, supplemented with trail rations.

He picks up a fist-sized stone and sits near his pack. "My monastery was rumored to eat the very rock we mined," he says, running a thumb over the surface. "Our rituals of casting the earth upon our shoulders did not help that image, and our isolation just built that reputation up until it was a mountain. When my brother and I were... when we left and met people from the outside, we found ourselves the subject of both wonderment and ridicule. I honestly didn't know how to react to that, how people could see us as something other than ourselves. The meditations and mantras helped me cope, but my brother didn't take it too well.

"When we were attacked at the barn the other night, and when the town came to accuse us of the crime, it reminded me of those days. I thought that I would be better at explaining things, but I've come to realize that none will believe the truth if it did not fit their own version of the stories; it's too inconvenient. And I wonder what that makes of my truth. When the earth is dug up to reveal what lies beneath, and two people each see something different, how can their perspectives be matched? Who or what can determine whether one person's vision is correct and the other is wrong?"

The monk weighs his rations in one hand and the stone in the other. "Maybe I do eat the rock. Maybe I have been depriving myself of my true sustenance." He hefts the boar meat. "Maybe I have been filling my belly with this false flesh for so long that I have become blind to the truth."

The fire cracks in the silence that follows. Aanbo tosses the stone near the fire pit and dusts his hand upon his robes and gives a wry smile. "Or maybe a rock is just a rock. That is the real truth."
Apr 15, 2025 6:13 pm
Jonel pays no mind to the others as he settles down for the night. He cracks open the spell book, not really in a mind to commit to the task out here in the wilds. He pulls a dagger from his bag and starts cleaning under his nails as he flips the pages, munching lightly on his portion of meat. No doubt his mentor could have had this decoded in a day's time. He wondered what the old one was doing at this time. Probably laboring over some headache-inducing text in a language Jonel couldn't begin to comprehend.
Apr 15, 2025 7:47 pm
"Eating rocks must explain how you hit so hard, Aanbo" the warrior stated simply, with genuine admiration for the dwur’s martial prowess.

"As for the truth, well, two people often see whatever they want to see at the bottom of whatever hole they dig," she added skirting dangerously close to what a more educated person might have thought of as a rudimentary form of folk-philosophy.

"Just think about it: back home most folks think I’m some kind of hero, that I’ve defeated the big bad ogre; the way I see it I’ve outlived most of my enemies; but mostly I’ve outlived most of my comrades-at-arms," she continued, her eyes now fixed on the unmoving shadow that was Reptile. "So far luck has carried me on, where others - more deserving — have fallen," there was a tightening of her voice at this junction, as her eyes unfocused or, rather, gazed at nothingness.

"I feel you have my back, though. That changes things. That’s a kind of new truth, at least for me. Not just relying on fickle Istus, but putting my trust on you. I’m no hero, but neither am I alone."

After speaking so much, she was silent, gently nibbling of what remained of her smoked boar.

Chase follows the tracks for some time; on first glance, it seems that they were just wandering through the Dim Forest when they happened upon the Dungeon Busters' trail. But Chase is experienced enough to recognize that the wandering was spread out enough that it seems that they were systematically searching the forest. Unfortunately, soon after this it grows too dark for the ranger to detect the tracks anymore. He's faced with a decision: does he ignite a light source, or does he continue in the darkness?

Chase is confident that he can find his way back to the Road even in the deep nighttime darkness of these woods, but if he wanted to continue tracking, he'd need light.
OOC:
Sorry; those rolls were unlucky.
Apr 15, 2025 10:16 pm
Chase just feels like this is important and he must push on. He will pull out a torch and his flint and steel and light it up. He will be even more vigilant than normal and prepared to snuff the light at a moments notice. He has had to do this kind of tracking before keeping his homeland of Agaden Reach safe. He takes a moment to think of home hoping he still has one. He will quickly gat back to his task. His new friends are counting on him and he would hate to let them down. He has quickly come to respect Aanbo, Theran, and Myrtha. Each different but more alike than they probably realize. All would make fine boundary wardens.
OOC:
Yes they were. Now it is time to take a chance.

Feeling a bit more comfortable with one another after their hours of hiking and sharing stories together, the two groups of adventurers settle down around the campfire, cooking boar meat and sharing more anecdotes. They begin to feel a bit more like a single team. With the story of the undead that attacked Jonel and then Arya, Manthis, and Rosemary, they are particularly careful to post a guard rotation, with careful instructions on how Chase will identify himself when he returns.
OOC:
Will you have one or two people on guard at a time? What shifts will you set for guarding the others while they rest/sleep?
Apr 16, 2025 4:35 am
With the torch lit, Chase is able to continue tracking the bandits' path back through the forest. It does meander, going back and forth, but it is pretty clear that they were making their way west, searching for something. This, coupled with the presence of the spiral pendants/brand, strongly suggest that they are affiliated with the group in Orlane.

Chase stops suddenly, his hackles rising, the sense of being observed is very strong. Casting his eyes slowly about within the small sphere of torchlight, he faintly sees a humanoid figure standing motionless just outside the light. He waits for a long moment, but the figure does not move or react in any way, neither to greet or to challenge.
Apr 16, 2025 4:40 am
Aanbo volunteers for the fourth shift so that he can perform his morning meditations when the sun rises. If asked for his opinion, he would suggest someone from the Orlane crew pair with someone sent from Hochoch.
Apr 16, 2025 4:54 am
Myrtha will take any shift, as she is an easy sleeper, and can return to rest easily at any time. She too favours the idea that one member of each group take joint watches, preferably mixing skill sets.
Apr 16, 2025 9:48 am
Chase will grip his spear a little tighter. and say quietly but firmly."I see you standing there. Come on out and show yourself." He will be prepared to throw the torch at said humanoid and flee if things go south. As a former boundary warden he knows confidence in manner and speech are the best in this situation.

"A priestess of Pelor sustains herself with only what is necessary, but no rock. We share any excess with the community, understanding that food and water are the very essence of life. As for truth," she added, her gaze thoughtful, "while individual perspectives shape our understanding, there is a core truth that resonates within each of us. Everyone else merely perceives the world through the unique lens of their own experiences." Turning to Anbo with a reassuring smile, she continued, "But have no fear, brother Anbo. With the light as your companion, no one will dare misjudge you." The light, of course, encompassing both Pelor and herself.

Simple subtle entertainment for the evening. Some rest is nice after doing the hauling. He may be husky, but he is no superman, so the day's work shows on him.

He will take a shift as needed and will don his armor for such as he has taken it off while camping. Figuring safety in numbers right now. His chain mail is not light. A sharp eye will notice a Red Heart Gem attached on a thin Silver Chain around his neck as he strips down to common clothing.

Meanwhile, further east in the Dim Forest...

Chase calls out to the motionless figure, and it turns toward him, moving slowly forward. As it moves closer, the flickering torchlight reveals the features of a slack-jawed woman dressed in leather armor caked with mud. She holds her arms limply at her sides as she stumbles forward, the only noise the crunching of bracken under her feet.
OOC:
@mathias0077 - roll both a WIS (Insight) and a WIS (Perception) check for Chase, please.
Apr 16, 2025 4:05 pm
Seeing as how Jonel doesn't have any kind of night vision, I think he would opt to watch with someone with better vision than him.
OOC:
Anyone with darkvision?
Apr 16, 2025 5:44 pm
OOC:
Theran will take watch with Jonel.

As the two groups walked through the Dim, a spat of silence seemed almost oppressive. The wood elf eventually spoke, breaking the curtain.

"Nature is equal parts magnificent and terrifying. More than that though, it simply is. I don't believe in punishing animals for doing what they do. That's why I took such issue with the bear... it was investigating because it smelled food. Would it have attacked us? Possibly, but we'll never know because some of us attacked first and provoked the conflict.

I'm no longer mad, but I find it does provide a serviceable example.

You might notice I had no issue killing the boars. They were aggressive. I fully expect people to defend themselves against aggression. In fact, people should. Which is why this issue with Orlane bothers me so much... it's insidious. People don't defend themselves, because it doesn't feel like aggression."

Theran falls silent for a moment, reflecting on his past before continuing. "I used deception once. It was not my proudest moment. Perhaps that's a part of why these spiral-adorned manipulators bother me so strongly... they remind me of a shadow I carry with me."
Apr 16, 2025 7:51 pm
The warrior nodded along with Theran’s words. She too regretted that the bear had to be beaten to an inch of its life, but they did spare it in the end.

Chase must have seen much in the way of unprovoked violence in his borderland. That might explain it, she thought. In what mattered, however, in the violence of man against man, the ranger had shown good instincts and loyalty to the team.

Myrtha feeds some more wood to the fire. She wondered once more how Joseph must be doing. If he was still alive. A shiver ran down her spine.
OOC:
I think Theran and Aanbo are the only one who have darkvision. What about this for watches:
- Rosemary and Chase (if he returns in time)
- Manthis and Theran
- Myrtha and Jonel
- Aanbo and Arya (dawn being prayer/meditation time for both)

Chase is surprised to see this woman caked in mud her expression is concerning also. "Are you alright? Are you alone? Lost?" His guard is still up and he is ready for anything.

Rolls

Perception - (1d20+2)

(19) + 2 = 21

Insight - (1d20+2)

(11) + 2 = 13

Apr 16, 2025 10:03 pm
OOC:
Theran volunteered also. Jonel has no preference, only a strategic suggestion..
Apr 17, 2025 4:49 am
Bradley is almost comically eager to help in any way he can. He tends to chat just to fill the silence (and to talk a lot about barrels - who knew there was so much to know about barrels?), but he is a quick study and is able to help with the simple tasks that Rosemary might entrust to him in preparing the meal beyond grilling the pork that the others are already doing.

Having agreed to the watch rotation, Bradley and Rosemary stay up as the others settle down to rest after the meal. "...and that's why Jim has me make all his brandy casks." Bradley finishes, speaking now in a lower voice. "What about you? When did you give up on baking and become a Dungeon Buster?"
Apr 17, 2025 4:55 am
Chase realizes two things simultaneously:
1) the woman approaching him is dead. She's not breathing, and there is a bit of fletching visible in her open mouth, probably from the arrow that killed her.
2) There is more motion in the forest around him: crunching of leaves, snapping of twigs.

The dead woman is moving slowly, awkwardly. He realizes that she's dead when she enters the light from the torch, so she's 35' away from him.
Apr 17, 2025 9:55 am
Chase realizing this woman is dead and remembering the others talking about encountering undead will backout and move out there. This is and evade and escape situation. Chase will start heading away from where the others are to get these undead headed that way. He thinks the party has done enough fighting the last couple if days. When has gone a few hundred yards he will lay the torch on a rock and then head back to others. Being at home in the woods he should have no problem getting back to camp. He will make sure he isn't being followed first though.
Apr 18, 2025 6:40 am
Having given the dead woman (and whatever else may have been moving in the area) the slip, Chase makes his way back through the forest in complete darkness. It takes him some time; he arrives at the camp site just at the end of the second watch, as Manthis and Theran have roused Jonel and Myrtha to start their shift.
Apr 18, 2025 11:54 am
Chase will give the signal as he nears camp and will tell Mrytha and Jonel "Be extra vigilant and let the next watches know. I ran into more undead in the woods. I gave them the slip and led them away so we should be good. I am going to get some rest."
Apr 18, 2025 2:43 pm
Myrtha donned her armour with practiced ease, as she received Chase’s account of what had transpired during his solo scouting.

"Ok, we’ll keep an eye out for walking dead people," she commented, without a shred of irony. She had never seen or fought such creatures, so she took a rather distant view of what encountering them might entail. "Any luck following the bandit’s tracks? Were they from Orlane?"

Of course, the warrior wouldn’t push the exhausted warden to give a detailed report at this stage. She pointed out the remaining boar meat in case Chase was hungry, and took a watch position opposite to where Jonel would choose to stay, so that the two sentries covered the entire area.
Apr 18, 2025 3:10 pm
Jonel wakes up, rubbing the sleep from his eyes. He listens to Chase's report.
"More undead, huh? That's no good. Glad you're safe."
He takes his place across from Myrtha.
"These zealots must have a proclivity for necromancy."

Rosemary gives Manthis some dinner. "You need your strength. We've got the watch for now. Rest up."
Apr 18, 2025 4:08 pm
"I don't like the undead. It breaks the natural order," Theran replies with a shake of his head after hearing the report. Still, he sits down to meditate now that his watch was over.
Apr 18, 2025 4:33 pm
"Thank you for saving me some boar Myrtha. I will let you all know what I discovered in the morning so all hear and I don't have to repeat it." He will take the boar and move off to a spot to eat and some quick sleep.

Arya ate heartily, her naturally athletic build requiring a significant portion of sustenance each day. After a brief wash and her evening prayers, sleep claimed her swiftly and deeply. Fortunately for the weary party, she remained blissfully unaware of the nearby undead presence. Had she known, her inherent zeal for eradicating such abominations would have undoubtedly led her to request a hunt, especially if the numbers were manageable. The thought of wandering undead, breeding further death and potentially swelling their ranks, was a concern that would have spurred her to immediate action.
Apr 19, 2025 1:59 am
After this, the night passes uneventfully. There is no further sign of walking corpses. The next day begins as Manthis and Chase are finishing their long rest after everyone else has.
OOC:
Each PC gains the benefit of a long rest:
- abilities that recover with a rest are restored
- casters prepare new spells and regain expended spell slots
- each PC regains up to half of their total hit dice (minimum of 1)

If anyone wishes to regain HP, they can either receive a healing spell, drink a healing potion, or spend one or more hit dice with an application of a healer's kit.

Unless your PC did not partake of the boar meat, you do not need to decrement a ration for this rest, as there was enough meat from the boar to serve everyone.
Bradley, who kept waking up in alarm all night (particularly after Chase's cryptic comments about undead), is quite bleary, but nevertheless eager to get on to Cecily's Road and back home to Hochoch. He isn't rude about it - he doesn't pester anyone - but it's painfully obvious to all of the Dungeon Busters (I'm including Jonel here) that he's eager to get underway and won't be happy until he's seen the last of the Dim Forest.
The travois with Reptile's body and the travois with all the unclaimed bandit equipment are ready to be hauled.
Aanbo (9/27)
Arya (10/10)
Chase (14/14)
Jonel (7/7)
Manthis (11/11)
Myrtha (17/18)
Rosemary (8/13)
Theran (6/13)
Apr 19, 2025 2:08 am
Arya was already awake and fully armored, her morning prayers concluded as the first rays of dawn painted the sky. She is in great condition, her eyes beaming as usual. Though her preference leaned towards Orlane, she offered no objection, prepared to move onward with the earliest light.
Apr 19, 2025 2:31 am
Jonel rises and gathers all his things. He misses having a mule. Trekking for miles and miles with a heavy load isn't really his strong suit.
"Zombies, zealots, and bloodthirsty savages. What a trip this is turning out to be. Kinda makes you miss rounding up drunks and pickpockets."
Apr 19, 2025 3:30 am
Aanbo normally would meditate as the sun's light brightened the horizon, but he instead chooses to apply the bandages and salves from his healing kit to his own wounds. There is a long road ahead, and it's as if he can feel Bradley's impatience with getting underway.

Looking at Chase and Theran, Aanbo offers some of his diminishing supplies, wordlessly helping to change soiled dressings.

As the rest of the camp rouses, Aanbo approaches Rosemary. "If you would like, I will see to those injuries," he says, gesturing to the wounds. "May I help?"
OOC:
Aanbo has 4 applications of his healer's kit remaining, which should help himself, Chase, Theran, and Rosemary with spending Hit Dice.

Rolls

2 Hit Dice - (2d8+4)

(47) + 4 = 15

Myrtha chuckled silently at Jonel’s comments about preferring thief-catching to the adventurer’s life in the wild. She prepared her gear meticulously, taking extra time examining her shield and sharpening her blade as Aanbo went around fixing everyone’s wounds. Hers were little more than scratches now, thanks to mother Arkon. She then busied herself with making sure Reptile’s body was as clean as possible, and tightly held in the travois.

After the morning preparations, she was ready to resume the trek back to Hochoch.

Confirms with others that it isn't far now to Hochoch. He takes little to no effort to deal with any of his gear other than to don his armor. Besides helping to break camp he makes sure the travois for the gear is secured as he will be hauling it again today. He does let others know that he has a full healer's kit on him. Just hasn't had the need to use any of it.

Chase will gather everybody around and tell them"The cultists seemed to be systematically looking for something when they wander over our trail. They were coming from the west and I am just assuming they are connected to the cult of Orlane since they had the spirals. As for the undead I have no idea what that is all about since two groups of them have been encountered. There is definitely something going on in the dim." After reporting he will suggest"Now that it is light maybe I should go back and try to make some more sense of this."

"Can I to accompany you, Chase?" The gracious priestess offered with a warm smile. Definitely, investigating the undead is more exciting than going back all the way to Hochoch.
Apr 19, 2025 1:15 pm
Chase will look at the priestess" I appreciate the offer but I move better, faster, and quieter on my own. I hope there is no offense."
Apr 19, 2025 1:59 pm
"None taken at all. If that's your preference, we'll see you later then."
Apr 19, 2025 3:48 pm
"More information is always welcome, but I don't know if it's worth the risk for you to travel alone," says Aanbo. "Since you appear set upon this path, maybe having a deadline will soothe my fears? Shall we say, a day? Before you return to Hochoch, where we expect you?"
Apr 19, 2025 4:03 pm
"A day sounds good. You guys keep traveling toward town. Use the road it will be quicker. I will find you." Chase will look to Aanbo"Relax my friend this is what I do. This is my element. If you were stealthy enough I would invite you along but stealth is a priority. Also will you take my bow and quiver? I will not need it for this." Chase will take a few moments to do some quick camo. Some mud here a few twigs there some grass to break up the outline and then be off spear in hand.
Apr 19, 2025 5:24 pm
Myrtha looked at Chase as he explained his plan, and her demeanour began to show that she did not like the idea of the ranger going by himself.

"Don’t think this is wise. One of ours is dead, another has been taken, and now you head off by yourself. Last time you ran into these shuffling bodies. What if you run into a band of cultists, or an angry bear?" she purposefully only mentioned possibilities they had been forced to face in the last few days.

"We left because our strength was not sufficient, and because Olpert needs to know how grave the situation is. You’re your own man, you do what you want. But I think it’s foolish. When we return, we know where we must go: either the Temple of Merikka or the warrrens beneath the Golden Grain. We don’t need more information now; not, at least, if it is at the cost of the life, or capture, of one of our own."

Saying all that took some effort, so Myrtha just shrugged and got ready to head back to Hochoch, with the ranger or not, as he chose.
OOC:
Also I believe we need training, though I’m not quite sure how this is handled in the fantasy.

Aanbo adds, "Chase said those bandits came from the west, similar to how we found those troglodytes and Bradley. If we can find how far they've traveled from Orlane, that could help us form our defenses."

The monk is struck with a thought. "It feels like they're coming further and further out to kidnap people; maybe we need to move the Jarls out of their reach.
Apr 19, 2025 6:28 pm
Jonel is a bit apprehensive about one of the group travelling alone with critical information that could be obtained, but the one who fashioned himself the leader of their band seemed to have an adequate grip on the situation. The one named Myrtha seemed to have a more tactical mind than any of them. The loss of the scout would no doubt be a major loss to their cause considering that no one else seemed to possess that skill set.
"Not knowing the numbers of our enemy and the fact that we have encountered undead twice now leads me to believe that the quicker we can withdraw, the better."

Chase will look to Myrtha"I understand and appreciate your concern but this is my job. When I was a boundary warden I spent months in the woods track criminals, hostile bands of orcs and goblins. Intel is important. They were searching for something and wouldn't hurt find out where these undead are coming from. Evading undead is easy and I have made a living evading all forms of others. I am the woods. I will be fine." Looking at Aanbo "That is a good idea. You should at least warn the Jarls if the won't leave." Chase will then turn and move out.
Apr 19, 2025 10:17 pm
A look of concern plays across Theran's face as Aanbo mentions the Jarls. "At the very least, make them aware of what we've learned and give them our recommendation. I would not force them to leave their home, but all things considered I would certainly encourage them to do so," Theran replies.
OOC:
Theran would have declined a use of the Healer's Kit, content to make the trip as he is.
Apr 20, 2025 6:35 pm
Chase, covered in twigs and mud, skulks off into the woods and quickly disappears. The rest of the Dungeon Busters - Theran, Rosemary, Myrtha, Manthis, Jonel, Arya, and Aanbo - leave, heading west on Cecily's Road.
OOC:
Where are you all going: straight back to Hochoch for training and to report to Olpert, back to the previous camp to retrieve the rest of the undead's gear, back to the Jarl homestead, or to someplace else? Hunting the owlbear, perhaps?

OOC:
I was thinking we are going to retrieve the rest of the gear before heading to Hochoch to unload and report. I imagine if that takes too much time then camping off to the side of the Celiy's road is in the cards.

OOC:
Jonel knows nothing about the Owlbear. He would vote for us to move at medium pace. Not too slow, but not at breakneck speed either.
To Chase before he departs, "Would you be comfortable bringing back as much of that discarded equipment as you could carry? I have no doubt that with your skills, you could pick out the more useful pieces while leaving the trash where it lies. The night we left there, the only thing we had on our minds was living through the night."

Aanbo suggests not visiting the other campsite, finding it to be a risk not worth taking with injuries and an innocent Hochoch civilian in tow. Instead he says, "I wish to visit the Jarls, check on them and warn them about the danger that's heading this way from Orlane. If you all are intent on going back to... grab things, is that it? I won't stop you and I would not want any more of us to travel alone, but I need to warn Abel."
OOC:
Hopefully it goes without saying, but while I understand the need to earn gold for future leveling, Aanbo doesn't care about such things so he doesn't have any compelling reason to go to the camp and loot the undead.
Apr 21, 2025 1:24 am
"I will accompany you to the Jarls' home." It is a simple, but firm statement. When the wood elf turns to their rescued companion, he adds, "It is a brief stop, and shouldn't meaningfully impact your return to Hochoch. I hope you do not mind."
Apr 21, 2025 4:40 am
Chase disappears into the forest to the north of the Road, even though he's starting by heading west in the same direction as the rest of the party (west to get to the previous campsite where Jonel and the others were attacked by undead).

In about three hours, he sees the place where some upthrust granite forms a wooded cliff overlooking a shadowy clearing, just as Manthis had described. At first glance, the ranger is alarmed to see slain adventurers, but then he recalls that the new Dungeon Busters had said that they were attacked by animated corpses dressed in armor and carrying weapons. He looks over the site before approaching: there are six bodies scattered around the campsite, two close to a fire ring, the other four not really in the clearing but near it.

Chase is a little puzzled: there is no collection of equipment in the clearing, though he remembers now that is how it was described to him. He waits for some time, a patient hunter who knows well that waiting in silent stillness will often result in prey revealing itself. But after several minutes, there is no movement or any cause for alarm, and his jangling nerves begin to relax a little.

Looking around a bit further, Chase observes (from a distance) that most of the corpses are clad in the remains of the armor they wore in life: rusted chain, scraps of leather, a couple plates of armor whose straps still remain intact. All but one of them also has one or more of some kind of weapon near them: three short bows, three quivers of arrows, two short swords, a club, and a staff. The last corpse has no weapon near it.

Heading west on Cecily's Road for four hours, the rest of the Dungeon Busters arrive at the place where the familiar path to the Jarls' homestead leads north into the Dim Forest. Soon enough, the younger Jarl children, Wenderly and Torren, come down the path to greet their dear friends from the Dungeon Busters (Torren runs, but Wenderly's little chubby legs are unable to keep up. Running hard, he trips, falls into the dust, springs up, and runs again. "You're back! You're back!" they cry with gladness. "Glorious Masters, tell us of your adventures!" Then their enthusiasm dims a little when they see Bradley, a stranger to them, but Torren knows what they are supposed to do. "Greetings, Most-Favored Lord, and well met. Please a-a-a-comp'ny us to the house for a warmer welcome. All who come in peace..."
"Peace! Peace!" Wenderly shouts, and Torren loses the thread of his little memorized speech.
"Uh..please, won't you rest a while and visit with us?" They then lead the adventurers back to the farmhouse. Emiless and Elista are tending the garden, and you see Devek in the distance leading livestock from one pasture-clearing to another. Elista rises with a smile. "How delightful to see the Highest Heroes Clothed in Glory all again so soon! It looks as if you have found the rest of your group." Her keen eyes notice the change to the group, and she addresses Bradley. "Is that Bradley? Bradley, have you given up on barrels and taken up a sword to go seeking treasure and glory?" She gives off teasing the cooper and begins to lead them into the house, but then she notes that her kids are being idle: Emiless, Torren, and Wenderly are just standing there, mouths slightly agape. "Well, get back to work, you three. You can visit with the Mightiest Champions when you've finished your daily chores."

Chase will check the bodies for any sign of the spiral then locate their tracks and back track them to see if the might meet up with others. Chase enjoys the company of the others but there is nothing like being on his own tracking a menace like he used to do. He is in his element in the woods and just feels that all his senses are sharper. All the different smells from the trees, to animal scent, and even the dirt. All the different sounds that he can separate after years in the woods. Tracking was always his favorite part of being a boundary warden.

Arya beamed, pleased by the considerate suggestion to warn the Jarl; the thought had been forming in her own mind as well. Once the initial pleasantries concluded, she would defer to another to deliver the troubling news details. Personally, she feels the family's safety lay in a temporary return to the city, though she suspects that suggestion might be met with resistance. "May Pelor's blessings be upon you all, friends," she said warmly. "We were on our way back to Hochoch following some unfortunate incidents in the forest. We do carry news, but perhaps it's best to wait until the children are occupied with their tasks."

Theran greets the Jarls warmly. When the children are sent back to their chores, he locks eyes for a moment with Aanbo before going out to help the kids do their work. "Nothing wrong with friends helping friends," he tells the younglings with a smile.
OOC:
Theran intends to keep the kids occupied, and provide the others a chance to have a serious adult-to-adult discusdion about the potentially looming danger. He sees it as the parents job to discuss this with the kids, and not the DBs place to blurt it out in front of everyone and cause a panic.

As she dragged the travois carrying Reptile’s body to the front of the Jarl’s homestead, Myrtha was suddenly very self aware. She attempted, as best she could, to cover the cadaver with a cloak or some other fabric easily at hand, but it was probably obvious, even for the children, that there was a dead man before their home.

Myrtha excused herself rather lamely: "It is a pleasure to see you again, she began awkwardly. "I am sorry. I would need a place in which to settle the body, out of your way and away from there’s of the young ones, if possible."

"Thank you, Elista. Your hospitality is always welcome," says Aanbo. The monk nods to Theran as the other goes to distract the children, and he lowers his voice after Myrtha makes her request. "As you can see, there is trouble in the woods. Where is Abel? Is there a place we can speak in private? Bradley, you'd better come, too."

"Thank you for the consideration, Glorious Lady" Elista says to Myrtha, seeing the travois bearing a body (Reptile's) under the cloak, and dipping into a deep curtsy. After a respectful pause, she straightens and gestures to little Wenderly. "Son, I have a job for you. Would you show Peerless Lady Myrtha the way to the boneyard? She has some things of inestimable value that she's going to entrust to us to keep up there tonight."

Wenderly looks up at the towering warrior woman. He's young enough to not have developed the sense of the huge class difference between them. "You wanna see where Boily is buried? Boily was a good dog." Then he notices that Manthis is also dragging a sledge. "What 'bout your stuff? You wanta leave that there, too?" Figuring that declining might lead to more questions, Manthis sighs and drags their loot travois up with them. Wenderly leads the way, telling stories about their old dog, Boily, and thankfully not registering that the load on Myrtha's travois is actually Reptile, the little boy's friend who'd visited the house just a few days before.

Theran accompanies Emiless back to the garden while Torren heads off to the chicken coop. Emiless talks a lot about the work she's doing, but she alternates those with questions for Theran about what it's like to be an elf. "How old are you, Mighty Lord? I hear that magnificent elves like your own person live a long time. My dad is so old; he's forty!"

Back inside the house, free from the chatter of the children, Elista clears the table so that the remaining adventurers (and Bradley) can sit down. "Welcome to you, good and noble paragon," She gives a little curtsy to Jonel, the only person in the group she hasn't met previously. To Aanbo she replies: "Elegant Master, my good husband Abel's out in the fields; I'd send one of the children to fetch him, but I just sent them off..."
Just then, the group hears someone approaching, talking excitedly before they even reach the door. "Mama! I saw Manthis and Myrtha with Wen! Ooh!" The door bursts open and 12-year-old Abella runs in, still talking, "Maybe Quest is here...oh!" She comes up short, seeing the group seated at the table. She scans their faces eagerly, hoping to see one in particular. But then her eyes widen as they catch sight of Jonel, and she sighs. "Ohhh..." Elista scolds her. "Abella, how many times have I told you to knock before entering? That's very rude to these Elevated Potentates who have graced us with their presence." Elista sighs. "Well, girl, it's good you're here. I want you to run and get your father. Our Radiantly Illuminated guests have something important to tell him." Abella gives a little moue, stealing a glance at Jonel, and Elista frowns. "NOW, Abella." Abella sighs, gives a curtsy so deep that her hair brushes the floor, and then rushes out.

A few minutes pass as Elista provides some drinks to the thirsty travelers. Then Myrtha, Manthis, and Abel Jarl all arrive at the house at about the same time (Abella stayed away, mortified). Theran, seeing Wenderly heading for the door, gestures over to him, too. "I heard you say something about a dog? Is that right?" Wenderly immediately starts telling the druid about Boily as they head back to the garden.

"Welcome, Most Magnificent Heroes," Abel says, "Welcome, Bradley," and then, to Jonel, he says "Welcome, Noblest of Knights. We have not met before; I am blessed to host a Fine and Elegant Gentleman such as yourself in my humble abode which is surely not worthy of any of you. If it please your Grace, I am called Abel Jarl."
Abel looks at Elista and is reassured by her smile that there isn't an immediate emergency. "Abella told me that you Courageous Champions have something you wanted to impart to us?"

Chase sees that the dead adventurers bear no tattoos or adornments that resemble the ones of their antagonists in Orlane. These adventurers seem to have been dead for some time. In searching the vicinity, Chase discovers the remains of Jonel's mule, as well as fresh footprints around the campsite. Some of those are a couple of days old; he's already examined the footprints of the new Dungeon Busters, and so he recognizes the tracks of Arya, Rosemary, Manthis, and even Jonel. But the more recent tracks seem to suggest that the dead adventurers themselves were walking around as recently as a few hours ago.

Chase follows these tracks, but they don't lead anywhere; the tracks seems to wander aimlessly around the campsite, and certainly do not connect with any of the bandits' tracks. He considers whether he's going to retrieve the dead adventurer's equipment first, or head east to look for bandit tracks first and come back for the equipment when he heads back to Hochoch later.
Apr 22, 2025 9:47 am
Chase will head off east to check the bandit tracks before it gets to dark and will come back here later if he has the time. He will warry of the the other group of undead shambling about as well.

"Abel, I won't mince words; I think you are in danger," says Aanbo, rolling his prayer stones through his fingers. "There is trouble coming from Orlane, and we have encountered their evil far into the Dim. Bradley is here because we luckily managed to find his captors and defeat them, though not without injury. I fear for your family's safety when the danger turns its eyes this way."

He sighs. "I know this is your life's work, and you have built a fine homestead here. I would like you to consider relocating to Hochoch, temporarily of course, until we can figure out a way to defeat the evil that has taken root in the east. I consider you and your family to be friends, and I do not wish for my friends to be vulnerable to harm."
Apr 22, 2025 7:17 pm
"And whoever these people are, they’re not playing around. They drugged our food at the Golden Grain Inn, hoping to overpower us; they then tried to take us out with the help of reptilian allies. They killed Reptile and we think they took Joseph," she added, hoping to instill a sense of their perfidy and power.

Aanbo adds, "If you remember the criminal Jonbon, the one that fooled Abel with words and tried to kidnap Elista and the children, he was intending to take everyone to Orlane. I think we were drugged with the same poison he put into your food. I've no doubt that while your isolation had spared you before, we've seen signs that they're casting their net farther and more remotely." Again, Aanbo looks at Bradley as the indicator of Orlane's expanding reach.

"Pleased to meet the both of you."
Jonel continues in such a way that the children can't hear.

Cecily's Road connects the town of Hochoch (to the west) and the city of Hookhill (to the east). In between them is the Dim Forest; the village of Orlane is about halfway between them. The Jarls live about halfway between Hochoch and Orlane. Hochoch is furthest west. Heading east from Hochoch, you first arrive at the Jarls' house. Continuing east, you next arrive at Orlane. If you continue east from there, you would emerge from the Dim Forest and eventually arrive at Hookhill.

I would have sworn that someone posted a link to a map and we talked about how accurate it was months ago, but I couldn't find it in a cursory search. I'd intended to make one of my own, but your question made me realize that I'd never actually done it. Now I have, and here it is:

While they are talking, Elista prepares and serves biscuits to keep herself busy. Rosemary immediately recognizes them as a variation on the recipe she left with the family. Elista's husband, Abel, mulls over what the heroes have told him.

"You think they'd try again, Wondrous Lords and Ladies?" Abel asks the group. "Why? It's just too much. First Devek nearly dies, then that bastard (pardon my language, nobles) tries to steal my whole family. Now you say they may come again? I want to protect my family, but what are we supposed to do? I have to get the crops in the ground now. If I don't, we won't have food to eat in the fall. Why is this happening again? What are they trying to do with people in Orlane?" Embarrassed at his outburst, Abel tugs his forelock and looks down, mumbling "Chastise me if I have offended any of you Illustrious Ones; I am grateful that you deigned to warn us lowly peasants of the danger."

Aanbo nods, understanding the situation that Abel and Elista face. "We went to Orlane to find out why," he says. "Our friend is in the boneyard now as a result of that, and as Myrtha mentioned, another is missing. We could only learn that the trouble in Orlane runs deep, and that we were ill-prepared to delve that far down."

He sighs. "I would stay to help protect you while you gather your crops, however long that might take. But I fear that my attention here leaves others in danger." Aanbo indicates Bradley with a tip of his head.

"I am at a loss for a convenient solution. If you move to Hochoch now, maybe we can sell that equipment we confiscated from bandits; that might provide some funds for you to survive for the time being." Aanbo looks to his friends if they have alternatives in mind.
Apr 23, 2025 8:17 pm
"I say this with all due respect. Do what you will with what is yours. I serve the interests of the many. I simply do not think we can afford to be overly charitable at a time like this. At about the time that the rest of the party is arriving at the Jarls' house, Chase finishes his initial examination of the cliff-side campsite with all the dead adventurers. Satisfied that there is no obvious connection between the dead bodies and the bandits of the spiral, Chase heads back east for four hours to return to the site of the battle with the ambushing bandits. It is early afternoon when Chase finds the tracks he was following last night and resumes tracing them back to determine their origin. Engaged in this activity for a few (4) more hours, he determines three things:

1) The group of bandits came west, and there's been no sign that they crossed the Realstream River. This indicates that they almost certainly came from Orlane. They also were clearly looking for the Dungeon Busters.
2) During his exploration, Chase found the dead woman who confronted him last night lying half in, half out of a bush, unmoving and reeking. There are several other corpses nearby in similar states of decay; Chase figures these may have been the ones making the other noises he heard the previous night. The dead bodies seem to have been animated before; there are tracks showing how they moved aimlessly, then started following him until he far outpaced them, at which point they began to wander again. At some point, the animating magic ceased, and the cadavers collapsed where they stood.
3) This search took longer than Chase expected; it is suppertime now. While it is not dark yet, it is golden hour, and it will be dark in about an hour. It will be dark before he can get to any of the camp sites the party has used (he can move two hexes at normal speed or two and a half at fast speed).
[ +- ] Chase's Exploration Map
Will Chase:
a) find a new place to make camp nearby?
b) return to the campsite the party used last night (about 3 hours away at normal speed, 2 hours fast)?
c) return to the cliffside campsite with all the dead adventurers (about 6 hours away at normal speed, 4 hours fast)?

Back at the Jarls' house, Bradley interjects "I don't know if I'll feel safe anywhere again, since I was taken from right outside Hochoch!" Bradley sees the looks the Dungeon Busters give him at this not-helpful information, and he subsides, adding weakly. "...but it sure will feel safer being around other people than out here with just my family..."
Apr 24, 2025 5:58 am
Abel sighs, shaking his head. "Magnificent worthies, I appreciate your offer of assistance," he nods at Aanbo. In response to Jonel's reservations, Abel responds, "We would never dream of imposing on our betters, much less zeniths of virtue like the celebrated heroes of Dungeon Busters." Elista nods in agreement. "We are merely wondering to ourselves how we will live in a big city like Hochoch." Abel looks at Elista, some unspoken married-couple communication passing between them, and then they both nod. Abel slaps his knees and stands up. "The Paragons have told us that we must leave, so it must be so. Please, Mighty Ones, do not trouble yourselves on our account. Make yourselves comfortable while we get ready to return to the city...again." So saying, he and Elista leave the party in the kitchen/living room of the house with their food and drink, while Abel goes outside to round up the children and Elista begins packing upstairs.
Apr 24, 2025 6:31 am
Aanbo turns to the others. "I will accompany the Jarls, if any of you wish to head back to Hochoch immediately."
Apr 24, 2025 8:48 am
Seeing the difficult position this news put the Jarls in, and recalling her very own experience as a dirt poor peasant and her family's dependence on the natural cycle of the seasons, and of the imperatives of agricultural timing, Myrtha spoke up once more. She had a surprisingly solemn tone as she recited the next phrases.

"It is wise that you leave. And I am sure we are all committed to bring an end to these dangers as quickly as possible. Know this, Abel and Elista, if you are not back tilling your fields within a couple of weeks, and as long as I am alive, you will not live in destitution in Hochoch. You have been very generous to us, total strangers, and that generosity must be rewarded, by the gods! I will make sure that if you face difficult times in Hochoch, that I provide enough coin for you and your family to live a simple, decent life while your farm is too dangerous to work in."

Following Aanbo's example, she makes ready to lead the entire family back to Hochoch as swiftly as possible.
OOC:
"I'm ready to use my share of the loot taken from the Golden Grain Inn to help them find temporary accommodations — for months if need be", is what she means. She is, after all, a folk hero : these are her people, she will not let them down. And Theran is currently carrying a backpack worth of mixed coins found in Bertrand's chest. Let's put that stolen money to good use.

Chase being so absorbed in his tracking didn't realize how late it had gotten. He will make tracks to the camp sight they had used the night before. He will not rush so as not to take mane any undue noise and draw attention to himself. As he reenters the well hidden camp sight he will again weave his string and bell at the entrance for early warning. He will eat a quick meal then roll in his cloak to get some rest. Ah, of course. There were several other corpses near the dead woman in various states of decay; Chase figures these may have been the ones making the other noises he heard the previous night. The dead bodies seem to have been animated before, as there are tracks leading up to their bodies. Backtracking, Chase saw how they had been moving aimlessly, then (probably when he showed up) started following him until he far outpaced them, at which point they began to wander again. At some point, the animating magic ceased, and the cadavers collapsed where they are now.

However, Chase heads back to Cecily's Road without incident, arriving at the road before it gets fully dark. Proceeding west cautiously, the ranger attracts no attention from any nocturnal creatures, despite lighting torches once night falls to see his way. It is almost three hours after nightfall when he finds the campsite he'd prepared the night before. Comfortable in solitude from his years as a boundary warden, Chase nevertheless takes some comfort in being in a familiar place where his friends and companion Dungeon Busters rested so recently. After setting his alarm lines, he quickly goes to sleep content in knowing that his friends are surely back safe in Hochoch by now.

Aanbo considers Jonel's statement. "I want to escort the Jarls to Hochoch in case they are attacked on the road," he says. "What I said earlier was more for anyone that wanted to leave now instead of waiting; I don't want to hold anyone up just to accommodate my intentions."

Sensing that at least he and Myrtha would accompany the crofter family, Aanbo further explains himself to Jonel, "I know we just met. Mother Arkon, Manthis, and Rosemary have said they are Dungeon Busters, and for now while they are still strangers to me, I place my trust that we share the same goals. Olpert would not have sent them to help us if they did not.

"You, on the other hand, seem to have been caught up in all this trouble through no apparent fault of your own," he continues. "I apologize for having dragged you around the Dim. You are under no obligation to us or the Jarls, so if you wish to journey on your own from this point I can only bid you safe travels. That said, if you choose to stick with the Dungeon Busters as we head back to Hochoch, I can assure you that we will do all we can to protect you."

Lordish Manthis has no offerings of coin to give. Truth known he doesn't have so much himself. As always, he is a good dungeon buster and says with protector Myrtha and monk Aanbo, "We should make haste for Hochoch as surely the enemy is regrouping. Jarls will be safe with us."

Sword swinging Manthis seems to ignore monk Aanbo worries that they are the same in with the Dungeon Busters. He lets their last action show the truth above their words. And should we run into the bandits and like again, he will do the same again too. Considering the lack of introduction, it is obvious the Jarl's know Manthis, Arya, & Rosemary as Dungeon Busters.

He smiles and does say to Torren, "Appears you will hear tales during our travels." Entertainer Manthis seems to always have a tall tale to tell and entice his audience. He does well to play himself off as a bard but tales isn't what he does best. Being a Fire Fly is his best by trademark.

Sorry for the delay, eveyone.
After a while, the front door opens again, and the Jarl children - Abella, Devek, Emiless, Torren, and Wenderly - file in, red-faced and blubbery, followed by a grim-faced Abel. When she hears the door, Elista hurries back down the stairs. Elista meets Abel's eyes, and they nod at one another. Elista sighs. Abel addresses the group: "Oh Majestic Magnificences, we have prepared. We've hitched the cow to the cart and released the goats and chickens - they're wily and will be able to survive as long as nothing eats them." Emiless, Torren, and Wenderly begin to cry more vigorously. "We've packed up the tools in the loft and closed up the barn. We've just got to load up some more goods we can sell...?" Elista nods and responds. "I've packed everything except our food and cooking pots here in the kitchen." Abel sighs. "Good. We should be ready to go in no more than a quarter hour." He turns to his kids. "If there's anything small that you want to bring, get it now. We don't know when we'll be able to come back again."

The kids run around the house, picking up items and then setting them down again, trying to decide on one thing that is their favorite. As they do so, Abel begins to lug the dry food out to the cart and Elista carries some bags of clothes out as well. Soon enough, the parents have finished loading those, and added two pots, a skillet, and a bread pan into the cart, along with the mismatched set of spoons and knives that they've acquired over the years of having children.

"We're ready." The Jarl family heads out with the assembled heroes, and Elista closes the door behind her. There is no lock. They begin to walk down the path, Abel leading the cow.

Myrtha tried to make herself useful as the Jarl’s prepared. Leaving in such a manner was hard on folk who, ordinarily, rarely left their home at all. The uncertainty, the risk, it was often too much to bear. But the Jarl’s seemed to manage, and displayed remarkable resilience in the face of adversity. Myrtha decided she liked these folks even more. This also confirmed that they had taken the right course of action: she would not have been able to bear coming to this place and finding these people taken, or slain. All she could do now was endeavour to bring safety back to their home as swiftly as possible.

Big Manthis carried little that given to him to carry. He avoided mostly by not being in the way. It was obvious that they couldn't possibly bring everything in a short notice. He felt bad about that. They could only hope no one raids the place while they are gone. His duty will lie in just guarding them for travels and some entertainment along the way.

Despite her graceful appearance, Arya was surprisingly sturdy and readily pitched in to help load the Jarls' cart, offering cheerful encouragement to everyone involved.

The Jarls are somber at first, and the children are upset - there's a pretty real chance that they are coming to associate going to Hochoch with emotional trauma. There are more tears as they leave the path and turn west onto Cecily's Road, heading for the town. The afternoon progresses as the party makes its slow way west, traveling at the pace of the cow pulling the cart. Each of the Jarls except for Wenderly takes turns leading the cow, and there are occasional stops for the cow to graze at the roadside. The younger kids will cheer up for a while, their curiosity irrepressible, but then one or another will remember a favorite animal or location left behind, and they'll get downcast once more. The older kids, Abella and Devek, put braver faces on it. Devek clearly wants to believe that everything will be intact when they return, and that the return will be soon. Abella is trying to distract herself, and so she tries to talk gaily with each of the adventurers. She is very flustered around the charming newcomer, Jonel, and laughs too loudly at his slightest witticism. Abel frowns; he knows that the man is not doing anything untoward, but he can see that Abella is starting to pay too much attention to Jonel, who cannot help how shockingly handsome he is. Elista takes Abella to the side for a serious conversation at one of the cow stops, and waves the group to continue without them for a bit. They catch up a little while later, with Abella slightly less manic. She talks to everyone with the exception of Jonel lest she be dazzled once more.

At one point as Devek is leading the cow, Abel seeks out Rosemary and takes her aside. He walks thoughtfully by the halfling's side for a bit and then looks sidelong down at her, clearly nervous to broach a subject. Finally he works up his nerve. "Glorious Lady, we appreciated your letter. I went in to town to have someone read it for us." He smiles proudly. "I know several people who can read! I had two of them read it, so I could be sure there were no mistakes. In your letter, you mentioned..." He looks up, reciting it verbatim since he had to memorize it to accurately share it with his wife Elista when he returned to the farm, "a 'trial or internship' for Abella, 'training her in the basics of self-defense' to 'come with you for a set period of time.' So, August Magnificence, I ask you: does that offer still stand?" He bows respectfully and puts up his hands imploringly. "I ask with no expectation - we owe you all so much already that we cannot think that you would do more! But if...if the opportunity is still there for my daughter to be your apprentice, your assistant, or even your servant, Tremendous Glory, I would rest easy knowing that she at least will be well."

Regardless of the outcome of that conversation, it's clear that the party will not make it to Hochoch before nightfall. Abel had the family leave as soon as they were ready in the early afternoon rather than waiting the rest of the day and spending a sleepless night in the home that they knew they'd be leaving, possibly forever, to avoid second thoughts and second-guessing.
But it (along with the cow) presents a quandary: at this pace, the party will have gone a little less than half of the ~ 20 miles back to Hochoch by nightfall. How do you want to proceed: find a place to make camp for the night before dark, light torches/lanterns to proceed in the dark to a campsite about halfway to Hochoch, or light up and prepare to hike all night with the Jarl family to get to Hochoch in the early morning? Stay with the Jarls, leave the Jarls, split the party? There's a bunch of decisions to make, and the adventurers are the ones thinking ahead about them.

Theran remains quiet, the fact they are ripping this family from their home (and worse, this seems to not be the first time?) weighing on him. His pack is full, but as the children pick up things and then put them down, Theran watches. Everything the children struggled with leaving, Theran will -- when no one is watching -- pack with him so the children have more of their things.

The elf will do what he can to preserve the children's joy in this tough time.

OOC:
Just to clarify: the reference to trauma leading to Hochoch is to the last time they went there, when they had just been barely rescued after being drugged and kidnapped by Jonbon, and didn't know whether Devek would recover from his VERY near-death experience. Abel goes in to town fairly often, to sell produce and/or meat (or to get a letter read!), but it's a rare thing for the rest of the family.

Jonel makes his way down the road in the middle of the pack. He makes the lightest conversation with Abel's daughter who seems to have taken an unhealthy amount of interest in him. He draws close to the rest of the party ready to discuss plans for the night.

Looking at Aanbo as the day came to a close, Myrtha suggested that the party seek shelter for the night on the side of the road.

"They’ve walked as much as could be expected for now. As did the animals. We’d better settle down, organize watches and make sure the Jarls get enough rest before tomorrow’s march. It will also give more time for Chase to catch up with us," she added, with a slight frown, as she was still not happy that Chase had gone off on his own.
OOC:
I say we stop at any sizeable roadside clearing, and set up camp.

Aanbo nods. "The kids will be tired," he adds. "I admit, I don't have the same eye as Chase when it comes to finding a nice spot, but we can at least make sure we have enough room for everybody."

The monk helps with Reptile's travois so that Myrtha can stretch her arms. "Two to a watch as before? Assuming Chase doesn't yet catch up to us, the first watch can be solo. I will volunteer for that shift if that's the case."

Chase in the morning will grab his string and bell and head out to the others camp sight to see if it looks like those undead were up and moving around.(He ill eat on the move) After he establishes that he will pick up the gear that looks suitable and that he can carry easily and then make tracks to try and catch the others. Once the road comes in sight he will move along side it in the woods far enough back to still see the road and hunker down if anyone comes. He will force march until he catches up with the others.

As he helps setting for camp, "I will keep a good watch."

Arya proved an invaluable support and guide for the Jarls as they faced yet another exile. Her words were a constant balm of hope, reminding them that Pelor had spared their lives, and as long as they remained united and alive, they would ultimately overcome this hardship. She moved among them, singing softly and offering frequent prayers, her energy seemingly inexhaustible.

Another campsite. A familiar knot of unease tightened in Arya's stomach. The past few days had taught her that the respite of sleep often preceded further trials.

Jonel helps set up the camp, offering use of his lantern. He suspects that sleep will not come easily tonight. Once camp is complete, he cracks open the coded spell book once more. Being a city dweller, his legs ache from the miles he put in today, but he is in good spirits regardless.

Nothing disturbs Chase's camp at night, and he sleeps soundly.

The ranger rises at first light, strikes his camp, and sets out at a fast pace. Making good time on the apparently-abandoned Road, Chase arrives at the cliff-side campground in the forenoon. Once again, he finds six dead adventurers, but four of them have moved from where he remembers they'd been, confirming that someone shifted them...or perhaps they themselves got up and walked around since he was last there?

Searching the bodies, Chase finds several weapons and a few other items.
There are two short bows, two quivers with arrows (of two types of fletching: 15 black, 3 white), a club, a short sword, a staff, a pouch of ball bearings, a bone die, and a hardened leather case of small metal tools. Chase recalls that Joseph uses a similar set of "tools of the trade," and as a connoisseur of archery, Chase sees that the white arrows are particularly well-made, though the balance is off, weighing more heavily at the tips than is usual. Setting aside the club and staff as not worth the effort, Chase gathers up the rest of the items. Most of it he stuffs into his pack, then adds the arrows to his quiver (tossing the empty ones aside). But the bows are too long to fit in a container. Unstringing them, Chase straps them to the outside of his pack, then heads out from the cliff-side campsite.
OOC:
All of the items together weigh only 10 pounds.
Continuing to move at a fast pace, Chase hikes through the underbrush within sight of Cecily's Road. A little after noon, he passes the path that led to the Jarls' house. Stopping by briefly to see whether his companions have visited, he finds the house empty and the animals scattered around the farm. There is no sign of violence, but tracks of a familiar hand cart, a cow, and several people lead back down to the Road.

Chase continues on, figuring that he is less than a day behind the group and likely to gain on them if they move at the cart's pace.

Arya is indeed a comfort to the Jarl family during the day's long, slow trek.

As evening comes, at Myrtha's suggestion, Aanbo and Theran look for and find a number of possible places to camp. The heroes are all accustomed to camping, and so they're not too choosy. They find a place set back from the Road that is large enough for them and the Jarl family. The adventurers are unsure how comfortable the rustic couple and their children will be with sleeping outdoors. It's clear that the children, numb with fatigue, enjoy the rest, at least at first. They're excited at the prospect of a fire and Abella, Devek, and Emiless rally their flagging energy and rush to help collect kindling. There is a bit of wind that makes starting the fire a little difficult, but they manage quite easily once Jonel steps up and lights it with a flourish and a Bolt.

Abel finds a place with no poisonous growth that could damage her, and then he ties up the cow so that she can graze and lay down, but not wander off and get lost. Manthis secures the travois of equipment off to one side as the others claim areas around the fire to spread their blankets. Aanbo begins his first watch and Myrtha tightens the blanket bound around Reptile's body, morbidly remembering the stories about the area's owlbear and hoping that the smell of her dead friend doesn't bring it or other scavengers. Still, she knows that Aanbo will be quick to wake everyone if there is any danger. Rosemary busies herself with preparing food, augmented by Theran's almost-supernatural ability to forage for a wide variety of edible plants and fungi. Despite their excitement (or perhaps exacerbated by it), the kids have barely eaten when they fall asleep. Elista lays down soon after, the emotional toil of the day overwhelming her despite the good cheer that Arya has brought. Abel worries and stays up for a while longer, staring broodingly into the fire as Aanbo walks the circuit of the camp and the others gradually settle to their rest, sleeping or entering trances. Jonel stays up for a while longer, attempting once again to glean some knowledge from the dead man's spellbook. After a while he slams the book shut in frustration.

It is then that Chase, having crept close enough to see his companions, whistles to Aanbo. The dwarf immediately recognizes the signature bird call. He nods - everything's all clear - and Chase enters the camp, tired after the day's fast hike but relieved to be reunited with his party.

OOC:
Wonder of wonders - I didn't actually roll a 6 this time, so there is no random encounter tonight! You all are free to narrate the reunion with Chase, the uneventful watches, the preparation of new spells, and breaking camp in the morning as you like. Tomorrow the party will head out for Hochoch, which they should reach in the early afternoon at the Jarls' pace.
Apr 29, 2025 5:42 am
Aanbo quietly fills Chase in on the events between their separation and reunion, all while offering a plate of remaining boar and tack that was almost-expectantly stashed under a blanket. "We hope to find the Jarls a home in Hochoch, temporarily at least," he ends. "I hope to sell some of the goods we've confiscated and give them a means to get by."

Glad to have the border warden back, Aanbo returns his attention to the watch. With innocent civilians gathered near the center for protection, the monk pays careful attention to the far reaches of the firelight around the camp.
Apr 29, 2025 9:41 am
Chase will fill Aanbo in on what he found."The bandits we fought we surely from Orlane. The strangest thing was the undead. Someone or something is messing with them at night or they are reanimating. I have never heard of anything like that. Have them wake me for last watch. I am going to get some shut eye." Chase will move on and get some sleep until it his time for watch.
Apr 30, 2025 3:09 am
The rest of the night passes uneventfully, with Aanbo relieved by Manthis and then he is relieved by Chase. Everyone wakes refreshed, even the Jarls (the parents are resigned, and the children now more excited than nervous). Despite Myrtha's fears, nothing came in the night to investigate the camp or the smell of Reptile's two-day-old corpse.

The party gathers together, and heads out with the forest crofters west towards the town Hochoch.
