Chapter 1: Into Haranshire

25th of Readying (Spring), 576 CY
It's been about two weeks since you responded to that note seeking "able bodied, adventurous types" for a "package delivery to the village of Thurmaster in Haranshire". You know the region and the pay sounded good, so you decided to investigate further. Your employer turned out to be a middle-aged, dark-haired and slightly portly wizard who introduced himself as Gordrenn, "purveyor of magical paraphernalia, material necessities and related items to many wizards of note" as he said, rather pompously. As for the job, he asked you to deliver a chest (some 12" x 18" x 18" box weighing about 20 lbs. including contents) of arcane spellcasting components to the wizard Tauster, who lives in the village of Thurmaster in Haranshire by the end of this month, the 28th of Readying.

In questioning him what's the cargo, or the rush, or the risks of the journey to warrant such pay, he assured you the way to Haranshire is rather safe and the goods are "nothing terribly expensive or important, but Tauster gets very huffy if I'm even a day late and all my usual couriers seem to be tied up in other activities". He also warned you the chest is magically sealed and tracked, so don't even think of stealing it, or opening it, for he will send all sorts of bad things after you. Once you reached an agreement, Gordrenn insisted on drawing up a formal contract that lays out the terms of your employment, witnessed at the nearest temple of The Lawmaker by one of the acolytes. As per the contract, Tauster will have to add his signature upon delivery of the chest and then the document can be turned in -there is no specific mention to whom exactly, but you assume another temple of The Lawmaker- in exchange for your reward, a total of 150 gold coins to be shared amongst you.

With no upfront payment, you couldn't afford horses, or even a river boat or barge upstream the Churnett river to take you to Haranshire, so you had to get there on foot, carrying the chest all the way. The journey so far has indeed been mostly uneventful and you've finally made it to Haranshire from the west, following the road which skirts the Lyrchwood. Thurmaster lies further to the east, but you're pretty sure you should make it to Milborne before nightfall, just in time to enjoy a proper meal and a night's rest on an actual bed.
OOC:
Alright, let's take this opportunity for everyone to introduce their character, describe their appearance and what they're doing as part of the group on the journey. Also, please let me know who is carrying the contract and who is carrying the chest

https://imgcdn.stablediffusionweb.com/2024/5/5/0bf2010f-bb1d-44ef-90ec-191d40934f1f.jpg Scarlet Meyers: Not exactly the most useful, Scarlet did what she could for travels. She quickly proved to be not very physical at all. Obviously more on the brainy side of things. Although weak, she does manage to keep up and offers no complaints.

Observation: Fairly sure if a leaf fell on her or a strong wind hit, she would fall down.

She displayed a considerable amount of curiosity about the possible magical contents of the wizard's chest, but completely controlled herself as not to attempt to circumvent the protective magics and preview what was within. She had asked many inquiring questions of the previous wizard which he passed off.

Prospects of the coin also caught her interest. Having wizardry herself introduced among the local wizards would not hurt her later she premised. Such as it is, these were enough reasons to agree to the task at hand.

She is rather easy to chat as she has social able air about her. It appears all her previous task in life have nothing to do with escorting and traveling. She has been a cook & even did some brewing. Besides being a "wizard" herself, she also has an interest in weaving. It is obvious that the point that she is a "Wizard", is her main possible aide to traversing the way.

Umbar was finding it to be rather difficult to make it on his own. For as long as he could remember in his seventy-some years of life, he had been a mercenary of sorts. But the pay had always been middling and the lack of autonomy frustrating. And now here he stood, walking alongside a group of children to protect a box. It was no wonder his mood had been foul.

He is a stocky sort, reaching a threatening three-and-a-half feet of height and built with dense muscle. Short, ill-cropped hair and heavy, well-traveled clothes mark him as a man... er, gnome of the road. At times when he is mulling over a question, he frequently rolls a piece of jet around through his fingers, or he sharpens his massive (to him) broadsword.

Today, however, he seems in a decent mood. The prospect of ale and some real food seems to perk him up, and he whistles a tune that is unfamiliar to you. Despite his gruff exterior and general armament, he seems quite pleased that he hasn't had to draw his sword through this journey, nor the flail that seems too large for him. "Any day you draw steel is a day you might die," he quips, unprovoked, to Scarlet. "May the Gem-Kin grant us a quiet journey and easy coin."
OOC:
He would have cast Armor at the beginning of the journey, and has not prepared it since.

"Nothing in advance?" The elf with the closely cropped hair and almost monastic habit asks the mage as he gives the stipulations of the contract. "That might be a problem for me, I have little money left after my travels here, and fewer options for survival, such as food, water, and the like. Surely you can spare something for us, especially if there's a time constraint on getting this package to the wizard. We can hardly be expected to make good time when we're starving, no? At the very least, we'll have to spend a day or two hunting along the way.

Almadel will volunteer to hold the contract, having read over it several times before signing.

Along the way, Almadel will keep an eye out for any trouble, volunteering to scout ahead from time to time, and will take a watch post at night.
OOC:
Love the gnome commenting on how much younger the others of us are - so far the others who have replied to this post are elves who are considerably older than he is!

Aldeera glances over the contract, not understanding parts of it, but signs anyway, making the assumption that if something were amiss, her companions would alert her. Once she has signed, she checks her gear (such as it is) and makes ready to get underway. On the journey, she displays a lot of curiosity about the object they are delivering. It is quite clear that she wants to know what is inside, but she refrains from trying to get to it, realizing the protections that wizards put in place on their goods.

Aldeera is freakishly tall and slender, standing 6'1" at her full height. She has tousled blonde hair and green eyes and is missing the pinkie finger of her right hand. A faded tattoo reaches from her hairline to cheek on her left side, depicting a sun on her cheek with a flame burst reaching skyward. She does not discuss the tattoo and seems to be sensitive about it, fixing her hair so as to hide as much of it as she can. She is very active, always on the move and investigating everything. She seems laden with the curse of curiosity, wanting to know the answer to every question that comes to mind.

Hanzel has spent much of the journey either finding random ways to make himself useful during the day or keeping watch and making sure any wild animals stay away from the group's supplies at night. While he's no stranger to travelling, a multiple-week journey alongside five strangers is somewhat unfamiliar territory to him, and he's been anxious to ensure that he does not make a bad impression on these people. Like most people would be, he's curious about the contents of the box, but not so much that he'd be willing to tamper with it.

He is of average physique for a young human man, with messy red hair that seems to attract leaves to it like a flower attracts bees. He keeps it long and loose, the way druids typically do, only cutting it when it gets impractically long. His green eyes flit between the flora and fauna he sees, trying to commit every last one of them to memory.

Caradoc was tired already. He had been carrying the chest for a while now. He waned to contribute to the allthough he was not the muscle type and in fact he was not much of a type at all. He was the kind of guy that would pass unseen in most occasions, the easily forgotten kind that people would not look twice. Of average height he would be called skinny by most "not eating enough meat" as his father would say. His greasy dark hair were not long enough to hide his pale complexion that made him look tired in the best of times and sick at worst. His only virtue he could think of was patience developped at an early age from all the fishing. It was because of that, he had been able to get some results from Lafayer's tutelage.

But that was behind him, he was now on his own helping these strangers to carry this chest and right now he just could not wait to see the outskirt of Milborne.
Apr 15, 2025 3:08 pm
The sun is descending and if your estimations are correct, the group should be a few hours away from reaching Milborne, because the road to the left seems to be opening up from the thicket of trees, so according to the map, you should be at the easternmost edge of the Lyrchwood. Furthermore, there's a bunch of farmers coming up from the opposite direction, clearly from somewhere around Milborne. They seem to be heading towards you at a steady, weary pace. As they draw closer, ready to pass with a wary nod, two arrows, followed quickly by another two, fly out from the woods and dig themselves into the ground just inches away ahead of the party's path!

Two of the farmers hold onto their instruments, a pitchfork and a staff respectively, that they were using as walking sticks, while the other two brandish weapons: one has a club and the other a sword. "Bandits!" they yell, and hurry forward to close ranks with your group in order to mount a joint defence. As they get near, two warriors come rushing from the woods armed with swords, having shouldered their longbows. To your surprise, the sword-wielding farmer points at Scarlet, saying "there, get that one!" as the "farmers" move out to attack you!

The two bowmen close in with their swords and try to flank Aldeera, but she deftly avoids one and the other's blow grazes off harmlessly against her armor.

Likewise, Almadel is able to dodge the apparent leader's blow as it didn't quite have the killer instinct behind it.

It's even easier for Umbar, who can tell these folks are not used to swinging their weapons at targets smaller than human size.

Caradoc isn't so lucky. In fact, luck seems to be on his attacker's side as the "farmer" manages to land a nasty blow with his club to the side of the cleric's head that rocks him, dropping him to the ground (-4hp, Caradoc is unconscious at 0 hp and bleeding).

Hanzel gets a prick from the pitchfork, enough to knock the wind out but not quite the decisive blow the "farmer" should have struck. It seems like he's intentionally holding back from an outright impalement.(-6hp, but half of that it subdual/non-lethal damage. Hanzel is now at 1hp).

Almadel swiftly unsheathes his longsword, skipping the leader's thrust, then uses acrobatics to roll away from the bandit leader and towards the trees, where he hopes to hide and sneak around to backstab one of the bandits at some point in the future.
OOC:
Acrobatics is a skill roll, using it as a defence like this gives +4 to AC. I have it at level 2, so get a +3 - which since you have to roll under the stat (Dex), I'm assuming adds to the stat rather than the roll (because that would make it more difficult the better you are!). So with Dex 16, that's a TN of 19, wanting to roll under 19.
OOC:
Well, that went well. :D

OOC:
That's fine. As mentioned on the recruitment thread, we won't be using a grid and precise measurements for this campaign, instead it'll be a looser "theatre of the mind" type of situation. Which is also why I didn't ask specifically for the group's marching formation. As a rough guide, the 3 farmers and the leader attacked the group face on, while the bowmen came from the flanks and ganged up on Aldeera.
Attacked from all sides, the party fight back but it's only Umbar who manages to land a solid hit with his footman's flail, knocking the wind out of his opponent (4 damage to Farmer B).

With Almadel having made a break for the woods and no one directly engaged with her in melee, Scarlet has enough space to maneuver sideways and point her spell against the entire front row of the attackers, catching all three "farmers" and their leaders in its area of effect. "Gah, my eyes!" cries out the leader in pain, as he squirms away for a moment. "Get the witch!". All around him, the frontline has collapsed and all three of his men drop to the ground (all three "farmers" are Unconscious for 8 rounds, the Leader is blinded for 4 rounds).

At their leader's command, the two swordsmen work together with one keeping Aldeera busy, so as to allow the other to disengage and move up to Scarlet. The distraction works, but no blow gets past Aldeera's defence, while Scarlet is quick to dodge a rather clumsy sword swing from the other bandit.

OOC:
No need for a Sneak roll in the heat of combat, the bowman being in melee with Scarlet is enough to allow Almadel to get behind him for a backstab. Same for Alderra, one target engaged with 3 enemies has enough distractions to allow her to land a sneaky stab. It's more about having an opening for a dirty blow than literally stabbing from behind.

No critical hit or miss rules in place. You might have noticed from the bandits' rolls in the first round, nat20 is just a guaranteed hit with no extra damage and nat1 is just guaranteed miss. If you'd like to change that going forward, we can discuss it in the ooc thread.

I'm off to bed, will resolve the round tomorrow!

"My eyes! Witchcraft!" cries the leader of the bandits, before a well-aimed shot from Hanzel lands true. Stumbling around and swinging his sword in the air, the man ends up tripping over one of his unconscious comrades. (Leader is prone on the ground, "Farmer" A is awakened but prone).

The rest of the group rushes up to defend Scarlet, with Aldeera finding an opening in the melee to stab the bandit (2 damage to Bandit B). Although he tries to retaliate by striking her, it's just not possible with so many enemies surrounding him.

The other bandit, now no longer engaged with Aldeera, rushes to the aid of his leader and comrades, awakening another "farmer" up as he helps them get back on their feet (Farmers A and C are now conscious and spend their round to stand up).

With everyone rushing to Scarlet's aid as they gang up on the bandit, Aldeera lands another lucky blow that shocks her target enough for him to drop his defences just in time for Umbar's flail to smash into his skull with a sickening crunch. (Bandit B – Dead). Meanwile, Hanzel opts for a new target and less risk of friendly fire, sending another stone from his sling to smash at the other bowman (3 damage to Bandit A).

"Leave me, get them!" says the group's leader, directing his men as he's still stumbling to get up while blinded. It would be a comical sight, if this wasn't a deadly combat situation. The "farmer" with the club kneels down to shake his staff-wielding fellow awake from Scarlet's spell, while the one with the pitchfork charges straight through to Hanzel, knocking him down to the ground (3 normal and 2 subdual damage to Hanzel, who drops Unconscious and Bleeding).

The remaining swordsman lets out his best impression of a battlecry and joins the fray, swinging wildly at the group that felled his ally. His blows are wide and clumsy though, with the best one swinging a few inches away from Almadel.

Caradoc lays in a field of green grass. A beautiful sun is rising on the horizon. Bathing in the sunlight, its as if he is in perfect communion with the dawnfather.

The light slowly gets more intense and his worries seems to... fade away.

Umbar swings his flail around like a madman (madgnome?) and although it doesn't land against anything that stops is momentum, it keeps the bandit occupied enough to avoid it that a combined attack from Aldeera and Almadel lands on the front and back of the bandit's chest, bringing him to his knees as blood gurgles up his throat (Bandit A - DEAD).

The remaining three "farmers" all charge up at the party, trying to take down as many targets as they can while forming a line of sorts and keeping their blinded leader at a safe distance from the fray. It is a desperate march, with no one really landing any proper blow, but at least they do manage to keep their leader out of melee while he's still vulnerable. Perhaps this could be the moment that the tide of battle turns in our heroes' favour?

"That's enough," barks Umbar before unleashing his arcane wrath. Joining his thumbs together between outstretched fingers, the gnome incants words of power that he had memorized earlier that morning. The words travel from his mind through his body to his fingers, being released back into the world as a fan of flames! He cackles as he feels this release, and as he smells the scorched clothing and flesh of those would do him harm!

I must have misread that as Umbar casting Armor at the start of the day, which did make me wonder how come he's got Burning Hands prepared. Did you mean to say he cast Armor on day 1 of the trip, but hasn't memorized or cast it on this day? Because if so, I've had him mistakenly down as having the benefits of the Armor spell in this combat so far. Can you please confirm?

OOC:
I'll say with the "farmers" forming a line in front of their leader, Almadel would have to circle around quite a bit to get a clear enough shot for a backstab, more than he can move in a single round. Being blinded though does lower the leader's AC by 4.

OOC:
That's what happens when you switch through different game systems! Somehow I had ye olde Mage Armor spell in mind, thanks for the spell description.
Umbar's spell creates a blast of magical fire, forcing everyone to avert their eyes for a moment. There's screams and the unmistakable smell of something burning. Once the fire subsides, one of the "farmers" is laying on the ground, his flesh charred beyond recognition (5 damage to "Farmer" B – DEAD). The other two, while hurt, are still up but unarmed, having tossed their weapons aside in the heat. In fact, few yards from where the men stand, two sticks are still ablaze, what used to be a club and the handle of a pitchfork (2 damage to Farmer A and 5 to Farmer C. Their clothes made the save but their weapons did not, meaning they are now unarmed).

Realizing their predicament, the two remaining "farmers" are too far from where Caradoc or Hanzel fell to pick up their weapons instead and they clearly don't want to risk getting through armed enemies in order to pick up the swords of the fallen bowmen. As they cautiously retreat, their leader regains his vision and takes in the scenery. "Fight, you cowards!" he shouts to them, but it is already late. The two remaining "farmers" are already making a run for it and he has to concede defeat as he makes a run for it too.

Caradoc and Hanzel are brought back to consciousness, but it's pretty clear they won't be able to do much more than walk the rest of the way to Milborne. Even then, it'll take a while before they're back in fighting shape.
OOC:
That's 7 days from the current date, which is the 25th of Readying. As a reminder, you have a deadline to deliver the box to Tauster in Thurmaster by the 28th.
A quick investigation of the bandits' bodies reveals little treasure and no insignia or tattoos to identify them as anything more than run of the mill highwaymen.
XP: 186 (31 each, further adjusted by any individual XP bonus modifiers)
2 longswords
2 longbows
10 Arrows, Sheaf
Quarterstaff
5gp, 18sp

The remainder of the journey, just a couple of hours as the sun sets and the twin moons rise in the sky, is blissfully uneventful. Milborne is a rather loosely populated community, as most of its residents live in the farmsteads that surround the town on both sides of the river, while the miners live in work camps just outside the mines and every so often bring their ores into town to sell them. As such, it takes a while to get past all the farms and to the actual heart of the town.
https://i.imgur.com/nQEIMx0.jpeg
Those of you familiar with Milborne know (and if not, asking any passer by will inform you) that The Silver Crown is not really an option. Even if you were willing to overlook its shadier reputation, it's just a drinking den that offers no accommodation, so the only real option to spend the night in is the Baron of Mutton. Built out of solid wood from the nearby forests, this establishment is a bit rustic but after several days on the road and sleeping on bedrolls around a campfire, it's a welcome upgrade. Upon entering, you find yourselves in a large common room dominated by a large bar with stools in front, while several tables fill the remaining space, some with long benches and some with chairs. The clientele is clearly working class, mostly barge workers moored on the river outside, maybe the occasional merchant passing through and spending the night here. A young man, well built with a short black beard, is behind the bar working the taps. Not far from where he's located, you spot the thick guestbook, so he's likely the one to talk to if you want a room. In one of the tables, an identical copy of the barman is leaning over the table and talking to an attractive young woman with long black hair, sporting a rich blue cloak in the pattern of a starry night sky. You would assume he's the one waiting the tables, so if you were to take a table he'd come to take your order for drinks and food. Assuming he will notice, because he looks to be deep in conversation with her.
Apr 23, 2025 9:57 pm
Aldeera approaches the bar confidently and asks the barkeep, "How much for a meal and a night's stay?"
Apr 23, 2025 10:44 pm
Scarlet heads to the fireplace area for relax at. The day fighting has worn very hard on her. The fears that she could end up like the two or worse is playing heavy on her mind. She has taken this first experience poorly.

Umbar finds a place by the fireplace to oil his weapons and sharpen his blade. He can see that the redhead had not taken the fight well, and he intends to give her some comfort. That is, until he remembers that he has not a way with words and would likely make the situation even worse. So he keeps cleaning his armaments.
Apr 24, 2025 7:03 pm
Although Hanzel doesn't normally have much trouble sleeping outdoors, he's not exactly in the best shape at the moment, so the idea of sleeping in a bed brings him relief. He can only hope that the rest of the way to Thurmaster isn't too eventful as he doubts he'll be of much use right now. Seeing the expression on the redheaded half-elf's face, he approaches her near the fireplace to see if he can help her feel a bit better. "Miss...Scarlet, was it?" he asks. "Do you want to talk about it?"

"I'm just not ready for this. I thought that I was. But I'm not. I will relax this night but in the morning, I will go onto my ways."
Apr 24, 2025 8:51 pm
"There's options, depending on coin and comfort" the barkeep answers Aldeera with a smile. "Three silvers gets you a bunk in the common room, no liability for missing items or teeth. Pint of ale in the morning, bit o' bread... Washing's free on the trough outside. Or, if you want one of the two guest rooms, that's a fiver of silver per person. They each got five beds, but I guess we could squeeze in a little extra for your gnome friend there by the fireplace. Price includes a bread roll for breakfast, straight out the oven, with some cured bacon and maybe an egg. You get a lock for the room and we might be able to get up some hot water for a lil' extra. Some of them folks you walked in with look like they could really use it. I'm Barthelew, by the way. My brother Andren's over there, he'll drop by to sort you out for drinks and dinner. Oi, Andren!"

At his brother's call, Andren pauses his conversation with the woman, turns his head and notices the new faces at the inn. With a few deft strides, he dodges the clientele and moving through the tables, gets by the fireplace. "Hello there, welcome to the Baron of Mutton. What can I getcha, beer, ale, Redwood wine? We got mutton to spare if you want a proper meal, with taters, veg and gravy, or just a bit of stew if you're down on coin."
OOC:
Recapping, accomodation is either 3sp per person in a 12 bunk common room or 5sp per person in a private room, both prices including breakfast. Drinks are 5cp for a pint of ale, 2sp for a bottle of Redwood wine, 5cp for a bowl of soup and 15cp for a serving of roast meat with vegetables.
Apr 25, 2025 3:01 am
"I should like a guest room,". She looks over her shoulder at her companions. "For all of us. And please bring enough ale and meat for all of us to enjoy." She digs in her purse and produces a pair of gold coins, placing them on the counter. "Keep the change." She then makes her way to the table to join the others.

That'll be 5*6=30sp or 3gp for lodging and, say a meal and ale for each of you, 12sp for food and drinks.
The order placed, Aldeera returns to the table while Andren is off to fetch the drinks. You have but a moment of respite to yourselves before the dark haired woman Andren was talking to stands up and walks towards your table. Seeing her better from up close now, her fancy blue cloak, held by an elaborate silver clasp around her neck, adds a deceptive gravitas to her appearance. Everything about her stature, facial features and the way she acts tell you she's but a young girl, maybe in her late teens but certainly under her twentieth birthday.

"Hello there!" she says cheerfully to the group. "Sorry to bother you before you could even have a drink, but I couldn't help myself. I'm Jelenneth, apprentice to the wizard Tauster, pleasure to make your acquaintance. You look rather unusual for Milborne. Uh, I don't mean that in a bad way, I mean, exotic, adventuring types! I would hear any stories you'd be willing to share with me, especially if they involve magic." That last bit she says with some smiling hesitation, as if sorry to burden you with something she's fascinated with.

Scarlet rises while saying, "I need a drink." as she moves to the bar. There she orders a drink and downs it fast. Moments later she exits the building (and game). You all just enjoy yourselves.
Apr 28, 2025 3:24 pm
Caradoc had remained silent since he had come back to his senses. His head was still aching from the hard blow it received. Furthermore, he was ashamed of having been of no help at all. This was a harsh reminder that despite the efforts of the lords, bandits still roamed. The sight of Scarlet leaving shakes him a bit. Of course they did not knew each other very well, but he still thought they would at least complete their first mission together.

Lost in his thoughts, he barely notice someone had come to talk to them.
Apr 29, 2025 2:52 pm
Umbar looks amused as one young sorceress departs the tavern just as another approaches; he assumes her to be a novice spellcaster by her garb and interest. "I have stories, lass," comments the tiny man, "But they'd harry your dreams. Magic is not some bedtime amusement , but a power to be respected."

But strangely, behind Umbar appears a duplicate of the gnome with some exaggerated features! The duplicate silently mocks him, putting on an overly cranky expression and wagging his finger to scold the girl.
OOC:
Phantasmal Force, yo!
Apr 30, 2025 3:42 am
Aldeera smiles at the gnome's illusion once she realizes what it is. The girl she eyes carefully. Aldeera has never fully trusted wizards, especially wizards she doesn't know. It's generally been a good policy. "You say you are apprenticed to Tauster, yes? It so happens that we have business with him. Can you tell us where he may be found?"
Apr 30, 2025 3:18 pm
Much like Aldeera, Jelenneth flashes a smile once she picks up on the illusion.
Jelenneth
"Oh wow! You don't look like the wizardly type, but I've heard gnomes are naturals with illusion magic. Well done, sir. Yes, I am indeed an apprentice of Tauster, I reckon he'll be in his tower in Thurmaster. Doesn't travel much anyway, and if he knows you're coming, he'll be expecting you there, I suppose. Lot of the outdoors stuff's usually done by me now that I'm training under him, though I'm actually here on a break to see my parents. Dad runs the mill, you see, and my mom does some baking. Best pies you'll ever taste in Haranshire, and I'm not just saying that 'cause she's my mom. She even sells some bread rolls to this place for guest breakfast plates, fresh out the oven every morning!"

As Jelenneth speaks, Andren returns to the table with half a dozen pints of beer, which he lays on the table.
Andren
"Aye, Baron o' Mutton's got the best breakfast you'll get in any establishment all over Haranshire. We may not be a fancy part of the realm, but we know hospitality. I'll be back in a pinch with your dinners, anything else you need let me know, yeah?"

Although he's addressing you, the lad is clearly all smiles and side glances at Jelenneth. She too looks fondly at him as he puts the glasses down, but it's clear her attention is split between him and your interesting presence.

"So, uh" she asks your group "Can I ask what your business with Tauster is, or is it strictly between him and you? I mean, I'm curious, but I'll understand if you don't wanna share."
May 1, 2025 1:28 am
Almadel sits next to Caradoc, concerned about the hit the youngster took in the battle against the bandits. "How are you doing, friend?" he asks him, looking at the man's wounds.

When Jelenneth comes over and asks our business with the mage, Almadel replies with "Oh, just a routine delivery, you know the sort of thing." to try to put her off. "Is he in residence do you know? We'd like to pass on the stuff as soon as we can, maybe there's a bonus if none of the fancy food goes off or anything."

Jelenneth

DarK_RaideR

May 1, 2025 9:10 pm
Jelenneth
"Ah, probably books or spell components again. Anyway, none of my business. Like I said, he doesn't get out much. He'll usually send me out for any errands, has to be really important for him to set out and leave me behind at the tower. He's the only wizard in Haranshire, see, so someone has to stay behind at all times, sometimes people show up to purchase various potions and such. Comes with age, I suppose, he's settled down, enjoys his comforts. Got his reading and research to tend to, those don't really mesh well with travels. So yeah, should be at his tower in Thurmaster."
May 3, 2025 3:54 pm
Moments later, Andren returns with plates of roast mutton, potatoes, carrots and parsnips, all topped with rich gravy. It's a filling meal that hits just right after eating packed rations for days, so between that and the beer, the night carries on merrily until it's time to retire to your room. It's nothing fancy, but it's got no strangers sleeping in with you, plus you get keys to the door and window locks, so that takes care of safety and privacy. Two sets of human sized bunk beds provide the lodging, with a single bed for whoever will have it; with Scarlet's departure, you're down to a five person group, perfectly fitting the five bed setup of the inn, which spares you from needing any extra arrangements and making the room any more cramped.

26th of Readying (Spring), 576 CY
The next morning, you awaken refreshed after a good night's sleep in an actual, proper bed. When you make your way downstairs to the common room, Andren is yet again slow to notice and serve you, but this time not due to him being in a conversation with Jelenneth. In fact, he seems to be caught up in a somewhat intense conversation with two older men. One is a middle aged man, ruddy-cheeked and barrel-chested, with floury side-whiskers showing the same gray that flecks his thinning hair. The other is an equally well built man, although clearly struck down with age. The few hair on his head is white and he seems to struggle hearing what's being said. You're pretty sure you saw the older man hanging out in this room last night, the other seems to be new. Whatever the case may be, Andren's twin brother, Barthelew, does eventually notice you and runs into the kitchen, returning to your table with a platter of steaming hot bread rolls, a small bowl of hard boiled eggs and sizzled bacon bits, a pitcher of milk, another with some sort of herbal tea brew and some cups. "Apologies for the delay, hope you had a good night's sleep. Enjoy your breakfast!"
OOC:
Up to you if you want to ask Barthelew, or Andren and the two men what the commotion is all about, go about Milborne, gear up, set out for your trip to Thurmaster or anything else. As a reminder, your group travels at the speed of its slowest member, Umbar, so it's a 2 day walk along the riverbank to Thurmaster. If you set out today, you can be in Thurmaster by nightfall of the 27th and the deadline for your delivery is the 28th.
Also, this is a good opportunity for @DrifterDwarf to introduce their character and join the party.
May 3, 2025 9:33 pm
Hanzel nods gratefully at Barthelew and drinks a cup of the herbal tea all at once. He glances at Andren and the two other men before turning back to Barthelew. "So...all that over there," he says, gesturing in the general direction of the commotion. "What's that about?"

"Older man there's Dirkaster, my grandad. Technically owns the Baron, but he's too old to work tables, or the bar, so me and Andren do that. The other's Haldelar, the miller. His wife makes these rolls, so he brought them over today. Seems like their daughter left the house without warning, so he thought he'd ask while he's here. After all, she was here last night, she and my brother are pretty close. I don't know the details of what happened, like when she left or where she slept, but they might. Think that's what they're doing, actually, trying to cross-reference and piece things together."
May 4, 2025 4:59 pm
"A Missing person?" Aldeera muses aloud, intrigued. "Sounds like a job for heroes." She does not indicate whether she believes her group to be said heroes.
May 4, 2025 6:32 pm
The warrior wearing worn, but well maintained, splint armor approached the group as they chatted over breakfast. He rested his hands on his weapon belt where a plain long sword hung on his hip. At 5'9" he was not overly tall for a human, but he seemed fit and appeared comfortable moving in the heavy armor.

"Good morning. I apologize for interrupting. My name is Devon and I noticed your group come in last night. It looked as if you had a rough go on the road with some of you injured. Then the fiery haired woman left quickly."

He glanced around those who were there, "Not to be nosey, but I thought I'd offer to see if you needed help. But now there seems to be someone missing?"

Devon looked at the serving boy Barthelew, "The one missing, is she the fetching woman who was here speaking with these travelers last night? I did not catch her name - Jel... something?"
May 5, 2025 12:53 am
"Perhaps if she's stil missing when we get back from delivering the package, we can help look for her?" Almadel suggests to Aldeera.
May 5, 2025 1:22 am
"I suppose. Never thought of myself as the hero type, but if there is sufficient motivation..."
May 5, 2025 8:42 am
"Jelenneth, yeah" Barthelew answers Devon. "I don't know about the motivation part, but I suppose her dad would be the one to talk to about that. Anyhows, enjoy your breakfast!" With that, the young man walks away from your table.
May 6, 2025 12:59 am
The warrior glanced around the table as he seemed to be trying to work something out. "Package? You folks doing a delivery then? Any chance that was what led to your road troubles?"

Devon seemed to still be thinking, "The woman Jelenneth was speaking with you folks last night. She say anything which would indicate she was not going home? She certainly looked like someone capable of making her way home without issue."

He glanced over to where the locals were still chatting.
May 6, 2025 1:02 am
"It does us no good for a budding witch to be missing. Dangerous times when you are young and full of magic. I have no tongue for the fathers of maidens, but I would hear what he has to say."
May 6, 2025 11:30 pm
The warrior looks surprised at Umbar's comment, until he realizes he means a magic using woman, not the other use of the word.

"She knows magic? As you say, that is even more unlikely that she just wondered off."
May 7, 2025 1:20 pm
Hanzel gets up and approaches the older men. "You're Haldelar, right?" he asks the miller. "Is it true that your daughter went missing?"
May 7, 2025 5:01 pm
Almadel replies to Devon's earlier question about the trouble with the bandits: "Probably. Though they may have just been waylaying travellers at random. Certainly there's nothing in the box worth anything much, though we do lose out on income if we don't get it to the place on time. And not all of us are rich enough to be able to give up certain money like that."

Hanzel gets up and approaches the older men. "You're Haldelar, right?" he asks the miller. "Is it true that your daughter went missing?"
Haldelar
"That I am" the man says cheerfully, sizing up Hanzel. "Wasn't aware my daughter's whereabouts were the talk of Milborne already, but I suppose rumor travels fast, eh? Ol' Dirkaster here tells me she slept over in the staff room with him and his boys, so I figure she crept out before dawn to go gather her alchemist herbs or something. She's a wizard's apprentice, you see, me and her mom are pretty proud of her. Sometimes she's off doing odd things like that as part of her training. Wouldn't be the first time she's done it either, bet she'll be back home before nightfall."

Andren
"And I'm telling you something happened to her!" Andren protests. "She's left her bag of magical trinkets under the guest bed. I don't know much about wizardry, but I know she never goes anywhere without it!"

Haldelar
"Now now, lad. I know you're fond of her, but there's no reason to raise the alarm on the drop of a pin. I want her back home as well, but show a bit o' faith in her first. She's a proper spellcaster now, and well past her sixteenth birthday, such as yourself and Barthelew. If you two boys are old enough to run the Baron, she's old enough to take care of herself."

Andren
"Please sir," says Andren, addressing Hanzel, "think I heard your group mention last night you have business with her mentor, Tauster, yes? If you're headed his way, will you please be on the lookout for her? Maybe he knows where she went. And if not, maybe let him know she's missing? Maybe he can use some spell to magically trace her, or..."
May 9, 2025 4:18 pm
Hanzel is slightly surprised at being addressed as "sir" but quickly recovers. "Yeah, we're doing a delivery for him. I'll keep an eye out when we head out for Thurmaster, and if she hasn't been found when we get there, I'll ask the wizard about it." He taps his fingers on his staff as he speaks, which he sometimes does when he's thinking. "Oh, and I might as well introduce myself; it'd be rude not to. I'm Hanzel."
May 10, 2025 12:04 pm
The warrior had watched Hanzel approach the father and overheard most of that they had said. Definitely seemed to be some concern, but could be the woman was just late in returning. Still worth paying attention for any sign - although rarely did missing people just suddenly appear in the middle of the road.

"So, a delivery to a wizard in Thurmaster. Got a bit of road still to cover if you are on a deadline. We should get to walking then."
May 11, 2025 3:36 pm
"Aye," agrees the gnome. "I have mighty short legs and many miles to go. We will be on the lookout, but we cannot promise anything."

"So let's be on our way, and if we happen upon the girl in our travels, so much the better."
May 12, 2025 2:58 pm
After saying your goodbyes and promising to be on the lookout for Jelenneth, you set off east along the bank of the Churnett river towards Thurmaster. Besides a few run-ins with farmers or miners, none of which have seen Jelenneth, the travel is uneventful. There's a light breeze and a few clouds, which protect you from the full blast of the sun and even make this stroll somewhat pleasant, at least until your back and legs start to protest. As the sun goes down and you begin to seek a suitable place to camp for the night, in the general area between the Thornwood and the Hardlow Woods, halfway from Milborne to Thurmaster, you can't shake the feeling that something, or someone, is observing you from a distance, maybe behind the trees and bushes off the edge of the trail path. Cautious, you settle down for the night and arrange lookout shifts, but whatever has been keeping tabs on you does not make its presence known.

The next morning, the sky is clear but the temperature has dropped. You're all too keen to get going and warm up your limbs; even better, that sensation of being watched is gone once you're back on more open territory that gives any stalkers a lot less cover to observe you from. Once again, the journey is uneventful, even during that bit where the Churnett river goes through the Redwood and turns south towards Thurmaster.
https://i.imgur.com/DHiy84l.jpeg
Thurmaster itself is a walled village, which you reach as the sun is halfway down on its course. Approaching, you see a great many abandoned houses, now falling into ruin, lying outside the rickety wooden walls surrounding the village. Two bored looking militiamen man the gate and give you a casual look as you approach, but obviously decide you're no troublemakers worth questioning and they just let you in. You're in town a day before your delivery deadline expires, so you could head for the inn and handle the package the next morning if you'd like, or you could make a beeline for the southern edge of the village, where a two-storey tower attached next to a house makes it abundantly clear that's the "wizard's tower" you're supposed to deliver the goods at. Those aside, the only other points of interest in the village are the general store of Thurmaster and the house of Squire Marlen, the local representative of Count Parlfray.
OOC:
Reminder, everyone's healed 2 hp by now (one for resting at the Baron of Mutton and another for the night's rest on the 26th) and used up 2 days' worth of rations for your 2 day travel from Milborne to Thurmaster. What do you want to do next?
May 13, 2025 1:18 pm
Shall we get this package delivered so it's out of the way, and ask the mage if he knows anything about the missing girl, or can help? That frees us up to do whatever we want then, and gets some money in our pockets."

Unless anyone objects, Almadel will head off to the tower.
May 14, 2025 12:07 am
The warrior agreed "Less time for things to go wrong and prevent delivery... is always a good idea."
May 14, 2025 12:12 am
"Agreed. Let us finish the job and earn our pay. Drinks are on the new guy tonight."
May 14, 2025 1:03 am
Aldeera shrugs and follows the others.
May 14, 2025 1:15 pm
Hanzel nods. "Yeah, making the delivery now seems like a good idea. I don't see any reason not to."
May 14, 2025 5:46 pm
"The quicker it is done the better!"
Caradoc just hopes the remainder of the travel would be without incident.
May 14, 2025 5:51 pm
"Be on edge, now. Twer' I a bandit in hopes of whatever this cargo is, I would wait for the last leg of the journey. We are tired and careless, thinking we have but minutes left."
May 15, 2025 3:05 pm
???
There is no response when you knock on the tower door and upon closer inspection, it looks a bit less well kept than the house next to which it's attached. Trying the house door instead, it is answered by a rather old and very short man; thin, but paunchy, with very little of what must have been his blonde-ish hair left. His light blue eyes are rather watery and he regards you with suspicion.

"Don't think I recognize you, lot. What do you want?"
May 15, 2025 4:55 pm
Well met, we're looking for Tauster, the mage. Do you happen to know where we can find him, as he does not appear to be answering his door.?"

Tauster
"That would be me. Nevermind the tower. Besides, it's a bit late to be looking to buy potions, don't you think? Or is this some kind of emergency?"
May 15, 2025 5:42 pm
"I don;t suppose you can prove you are who you say you are, can you?" Almadel asks. "Only we want to make sure we've got the right person. Due diligence, you know."

Tauster
"I don't suppose you'd be able to identify my arcane mark, would you? Can ask anyone in Thurmaster I suppose, I'm Tauster alright. If you're that cautious, I can only assume you're Gordren's couriers, yes? Think you're here earlier than you're supposed to, looks like the man finally found himself some proper professionals!"
May 16, 2025 5:00 pm
"That seems to qualify. Yes, we're couriers sent by Gordren. We have your box here, and also request your help - a young woman, Jelenneth, has gone missing in Milbourne. Would you be able to help in locating her at all?"

Tauster

DarK_RaideR

May 16, 2025 9:08 pm
Tauster
"The girl is missing? That's most concerning... Oh well, first thing's first, I believe you have a box for me and a letter you'll be wanting signed, hm?"

Once you hand those two items to the old wizard, he scuttles to the tower door, unlocks it with some key produced from somewhere between his robes, slips in and locks the door behind him. Some awkward moments later, the door is unlocked and he slips back out again, locking it behind him before he offers you the letter, complete with his signature at the bottom.

"There you go, well earned. Squire Marlen is where couriers usually go to exchange such writs for their cash payment."
After an awkward pause, the wizard stammers a bit and goes on for a bit.
Er, well, I suppose since you've come all this way you'll be expecting some hospitality then? Yes, that seems to be appropriate. Well then, I'll buy you a meal at the Hound and Tails, but word of advice, stay away from the 'Mutton' Pies at that place. You can tell me everything about the girl's situation over food and drinks, because as far as I know, it's been a couple of weeks since she left and she isn't due to return till the end of next week."
May 17, 2025 11:02 pm
"Food and lodging would be appreciated," gruffs the gnome in his most cordial tone. "I, too, find it worrisome. For power to be lost in the world at a fragile age..."
May 18, 2025 9:44 am
With Tauster at the lead, you make your way to the Hound and Tails nearby. Apparently, the name refers to fox tails, as the sign outside the entrance features a painted dog and underneath it are nailed three actual fox tails, hanging in the wind. The inside of the place doesn't look any more appealing and it's certainly seen better days, probably when it first opened. The gloomy, underlit drinking room smells faintly of stale alcohol, sweat and vomit. Any customers around seem to be on the non-urban side of the employment spectrum: woodsmen, hunters, lumberjacks or boatsmen.

The wizard seems to be somewhat of a recognizable figure and most people give him a nod of acknowledgment if their eyes meet, or a wider berth if their paths do. Tauster leads you to a free table and orders a mug of ale for everyone, as it seems there's no other option for drinks anyway. When it comes to the table, it's weak, but it'll have to do, as clearly this is the only provider of drinks and lodging in Thurmaster.

Tauster
"I've been thinking," the wizard begins, once everyone's settled down "if you don't have any other business to tend to now that you've delivered my package, mayhaps I could commission you to seek my apprentice. She is a talented one, and very persistent. Like I said, she's been gone for a while and wasn't due to return for another week, so I have no clue where she might have been. You mentioned she's been missing from Milborne, what happened exactly?"
May 18, 2025 6:34 pm
"Well, she disappeared at some point in the night a couple of days ago," Hanzel says, eyeing the ale and then deciding not to drink it. "Andren said she'd left her bag of magic things behind, so he thinks something happened to her."
May 18, 2025 6:38 pm
Aldeera tastes the ale, then makes a face and decides against drinking it. "We ran into some bandits on the way here. It seems possible that she fell afoul of the same. In which case, we'd better be going after her."

Tauster
"Bag of magic things, you say? If that's her spell components, I fear you might be right. No arcanist would go anywhere without them. Well, here's the thing. Halfway along the river from here to Milborne, where the forests get too close to the bank, there's a hut further inland, on the north side. Man by the name of Kuiper lives here. Rangerly type. If she's been anywhere along the river, he'll know about it. If those bandits have been active in the area, he'll probably know about it too and if not, it'd be best if you alerted him. I can pen a letter of introduction for you, proving I've sent you to him and confirming what you've told me. I'll ask him to pay you... say, 10 gold per person, for your troubles. Yes, sounds like fair recompense. And should you find my apprentice in any trouble, I'll give you another 50 apiece for returning her safely to my tower. What do you say?"
May 18, 2025 11:51 pm
The corners of Aldeera's mouth turn up slightly, but her expression does not change. "Fair compensation, indeed. I agree to the terms." Frankly, it was more than she expected, having fully anticipated that they would be doing it out of the goodness of their hearts.
May 19, 2025 10:07 pm
The warrior listened carefully and nodded his agreement to help. "I would hope we could find her quickly."
May 20, 2025 3:43 pm
"Looks like we have a new job then. And a new location to try first, this Kuiper's place."

Almadel thinks for a second or two.

"Any other places we should look? Anywhere she's likely to go to gather components? Any other people she's known to visit?"
May 21, 2025 12:44 pm
Although Tauster seems glad to get a positive response, Almadel's question catches him a bit by surprise.

Tauster
"Visit? Uhm, none that I know of. She's pretty autonomous, really, very strong character. If I'm not teaching her or given her a task, she's doing her own thing. As far as I know, she'd be visiting family in Milborne, then returning here, so that's as much as I can tell you. However, now that I think of it, if you're seeing Squire Marlen to cash in your delivery reward, you might as well let him know about those bandits. He might offer a reward if you take them out, or he might know of any other things in the area that need doing while you're around. So far as my role as your employer goes, since you've agreed to look out for my apprentice, I'll cover your lodging here for tonight but you best be on your way tomorrow."
May 22, 2025 1:38 am
The warrior nodded his agreement, "Of course, first thing we should be on the road."

He looked at the others in the group, "Perhaps we should see the Squire about the payment when we finish our meal. That will free us to begin our search in the morning."
May 22, 2025 9:39 pm
Hanzel nods; it'd be best to get the payment sorted sooner rather than later.
May 23, 2025 5:05 pm
"Agreed. Bounties for bandits are always a nice addition, but a dangerous pursuit. One would think we'd have seen a sign had the girl come this way, but perhaps we should sleep on it. And get paid before that."
May 24, 2025 9:08 pm
With no rush to keep drinking the night away, you say your goodbyes after Tauster makes arrangements for your lodging and head to sleep. The Hound and Tails is a much more frustrating experience than sleeping at the Baron of Mutton in Milborne was; only shared rooms are available here and the beds aren't exactly cozy. Besides their decrepit frame and suspiciously stained sheets, the beds are also home to many
inquisitive and hungry bugs. Probably beats camping outside while on the move, but only marginally.

28th of Readying (Spring), 576 CY

Breakfast the next morning is an equally hideous affair of cold, fatty mutton pies and ale swillings served by a yawning waitress who clearly had a long shift the night prior. Although things are served to you anyway as part of the lodging, you can't help but recall how the ale tasted last night and Tauster's warning to avoid the pies.

Almadel Dearheart
"Did anyone else stay up last night? I had a bunch of thoughts and if I'm honest, I hadn't planned for what I'd do after delivering the box. I'll come with you to Squire Marlen and collect the pay but past that, I think I'd rather stay put for a bit. Besides, who knows, maybe Jelenneth will show up here while you're away, or maybe it'd be a good idea to keep an eye on this Tauster fellow."
May 25, 2025 1:32 am
"Fair enough," Aldeera says, "And probably a good idea."
May 27, 2025 12:31 am
"Shall we go and look for Squire Marlen, then?" Hanzel asks. Once they have their coin, they can resupply before heading off, provided they have no other business keeping them in this town.
May 27, 2025 11:46 am
Devon woke and gathered his things. He'd slept in worst places, but maybe being on the ground in the forest would have been better. He orders something simple and avoids the pies.

"Yes. Let us finish our business here so that we can get to finding the missing girl."

The warrior heads to where they were told they would find Squire Marlen and be able to get their pay for the delivery.
May 27, 2025 6:02 pm
"Aye," agrees the gnome who seemed quite unphased by the conditions of the night. He picks something stringy from his teeth, the origin of which was likely something in one of the meals despite its unknown nature.
OOC:
Umbar has prepared the same spells as usual: Burning Hands and Phantasmal Force. His Armor holds steady!
May 27, 2025 6:56 pm
It's a short trek to the house of Squire Marlen, easily discernable by the fact that it's the only one with an armed and armored guard standing watch outside its front door.

Guard
"Halt there, citizens! State your names and purpose of visitation."
May 28, 2025 9:35 pm
The warrior had been a guard upon occasion, boring work which often went unappreciated. Devon smiled at the guard, "Devon Kane, myself and these others have completed a delivery for the wizard Tauster. He has signed this letter of receipt and we have come to see Squire Marlen about payment, as well as some other inquiries."
May 29, 2025 9:12 am
The guard leans on his polearm, looking bored but a bit amused by Devon's answer.

Guard
"Right, so this must be the part where I ask you to hand over the letter and I'll take it to him cuz he's a busy man you can't just walk up and talk to, then you refuse and say it's important and private and you'll only hand it to him in person and then I send someone to get him. Let's just skip that and save us all the hassle, but the boss is pretty tight about us being all rough and tough, so if he asks you, be sure to tell 'im I gave you a hard time before I let you through, alright?"
May 29, 2025 2:31 pm
The gnome grunts, understanding this game quite well. He does not, however, make any attempt to speak for the group.
May 29, 2025 7:47 pm
Aldeera rolls her eyes, but nods, passing by the guard and into the house proper.
May 29, 2025 8:29 pm
Aldeera finds the door locked, but the guard shouts something about a group here to see Squire Marlen and having the all-clear. Some other voice, perhaps a servant or another guard, says something undiscernible behind the door and then the sound of footsteps. Within a few minutes, there's keys on a lock from the inside and the door opens to reveal an old, rake-thin man with a beak of a nose and beady eyes looking down at the group.

Squire Marlen
"Right then," the man says with a rather squeaky voice looking at the guard, "who are these lot and why've you let them through?"

Guard
"Tauster's employee's, sirrah. Say they have a letter to turn in for their cash payment. Wouldn't hand it over, said they must deliver it to you personally and also discuss something personal."

Squire Marlen
"Is that so?" Marlen says turning his head to register everyone's face one by one. "Well, tis my duty to handle this payment and I'd love to hear all about you lot, please, do come in, join me in my office."
May 30, 2025 8:22 pm
Umbar enters the place, cognizant of the eyes that land on him for the rarity of being a gnome. He picks a place by a side-wall from where he can observe the whole room.
May 30, 2025 8:26 pm
Aldeera greets the Squire with a handshake. "Aldeera," she says by way of introduction. "I must say that we had a devil of a time getting it here. There was a group of bandits on the road that nearly bested us, but in the end, we routed them."
May 31, 2025 3:45 pm
Hanzel, leaning on his staff, nods. "Yeah, most of them were posing as ordinary farmers so they could ambush people." He gives Marlen a smile. "I'm Hanzel, by the way."
May 31, 2025 8:18 pm
Squire Marlen leads you past the door and another guard that was posted behind it, on the inside of the house, as you introduce yourselves. The corridor looks clean but rather bare, occupied but not exactly lived in. The "office" isn't any better, a small, spartan room with a basic desk and chair, a couple of stools and some filing cabinets that seem to be packed floor to roof with scrolls. Clearly this is a one man workspace, maybe able to accommodate a visitor or two, but between all of you, with weapons and backpacks, it feels pretty cramped.

Squire Marlen
"Bandits, you say? Yes, well, it's not unusual round these parts, but they usually attack merchant caravans, or maybe the odd mining transport. Why would they attack you? Must have been some prize you were carrying for the wizard, no? And where exactly did that happen? Authority in Haranshire is divided between two noble families, so depends on whose land they're stirring up trouble. And what about the rest of you, then?"

Almadel Dearheard
"I'm Almadel. These here are Devon and Caradoc."
Jun 1, 2025 3:17 am
"They attacked us because they must," spits out Umbar. "We had a box and we had clothes and food. By their nature, they had to attack us and try to take them. For had they not, would they have been bandits?"

He blinks, suddenly seemingly embarrassed by his waxing poetic. "Umbar."
Jun 1, 2025 12:07 pm
Devon had not been with the group during their previous attack, so he stood waiting for the others to answer the man's questions.
Jun 1, 2025 8:53 pm
Marlen takes the document and carries on talking as he's going through it.

Squire Marlen
"Yes, well, I suppose unless this happened in eastern Haranshire, it's a Carman family problem. Well, your document seems to be in proper order, so I'll just head on out to my vault and bring you your cash reward. Stay here, I'll be back in a jiffy."

With that, Squire Marlen scurries between you with what you're starting to notice is a funny gait he's got. A guard outside the room keeps watch over you and indeed, several moments later, Squire Marlen returns with a hefty pouch that he hands to you. "Job well done and all that. Now, be on your way then."
OOC:
The pouch contains a total of 150gp. Almadel will take his share of 25gp, but Scarlet is no longer around to claim hers. Up to you if you hand that her share of 25gp to Devon, split it between the remaining PCs or do something else.

Umbar, Caradoc, Aldeera and Hanzel gain 175XP each for completing the quest, plus any individual XP bonuses they might have. Sorry @DrifterDwarf but Devon wasn't involved in this so he doesn't get any XP at this point.
Jun 2, 2025 11:44 pm
OOC:
I vote we share the wealth with Devon. Now, was there anything else we needed from Marlen?
Jun 3, 2025 12:55 am
The warrior looked at Squire Marlen. "Sir, one other matter related to bandits. The wizard's apprentice appears to have gone missing. We are going to be searching for her presently. Are there any reports of other kidnappings in the area or established groups who might want to abduct a young wizard?"
Jun 3, 2025 2:41 pm
Squire Marlen looks at Devon with interest upon hearing the news of the apprentice's disappearance. There's more curiosity than worry in his face though, as if he's interested in the gossip rather than distraught at getting bad news.

Squire Marlen
"Missing? Well, that's not good then. Haranshire isn't without its dangers, but none jumps to mind immediately, nothing as organized enough to pull off such an act, at least. There's beasties in the woods, but they're kept in check, too wild anyway. We've had some issues with lizardmen from the Shrieken Mire down south, but it's been over two decades since they were defeated and scattered. I suppose there might be something dwelling in the mines to the West, but they're all well used and well defended far as I'm aware. Should you, however, discover something about this disappearance, do let me know without delay!"
Jun 4, 2025 12:59 am
The gnome perks up at the mention of mines. Beasties lived in those, and gems. His nose twitches as he unconsciously tries to pick up a scent of something opaque and glittering.

"What say you about the mines? What do the soldiers think lurks within?"
Jun 4, 2025 12:10 pm
Squire Marlen
"Oh I wouldn't know, Thurmaster folks are more into farming, raising animals and logging, maybe the occasional river boating. The mines are off in the northwest of Haranshire, it's the Carmans who run them so you'd have to ask miners in Milborne. I don't know anything specific, I'm just assuming something might live there, as things tend to do underground. I'm also assuming it's contained enough for the mines to remain operational, else word would have reached Thurmaster."
Jun 6, 2025 12:13 pm
Hanzel tries to recall anyone or anything from the woods that might do something like this. He doesn't think so; while there are a few forest creatures known to capture humans, he doubts they'd venture that far from the woods to do so.
Jun 11, 2025 4:44 pm
Hanzel more or less reaches the same conclusion as Squire Marlen, any beasts in the wood are probably too wild and disorganised to do something like this.
OOC:
Anything else you'd like to ask, say or do here? If not, you can move on to another place in town or start your trek to Kuiper's location.
Jun 12, 2025 3:57 am
"Thank you, Squire, for your payment and the information, but I think that we should be off to see if we can find the maiden."

28th of Readying (Spring), 576 CY
After wrapping things up with Squire Marlen, you begin your trek back West. Judging from Tauster's information about where Kuiper's place should be, you estimate a sunset arrival. However, after a brief meeting between party members, Almadel reviews his decision;it is actually Umbar that shall stay behind in Thurmaster after all.

Marching out along the Churnett river, you find that without Umbar around, you no longer need to keep a relaxed pace in order to match his. In fact, you're able to move at almost twice your previous speed: it's high noon when you make it to the general area that you camped two nights ago and through a combination of sunny weather and faster marching, you realize how the soft spring breeze feels chilly on your sweaty foreheads. After a short break, you set out to scan the surrounding area and within half an hour or so, locate your target: a small hut with a few animals around and in front of it a tall, shirtless, strongly built man in his late twenties chopping firewood on a log with confident swings of his woodsman's axe. As you approach, he stops and shields his eyes from the sun to have a look at you, then waves a hand in the air.

"Hello, travelers! Bit off the road, you are. Got lost?"

Rolls

Random encounter - (d20)

Jun 16, 2025 2:39 pm
"Not lost, no," Hanzel says amiably as he approaches the woodsman. "We're looking for a fellow by the name of Kuiper, actually. Would that happen to be you, by any chance?"
Jun 16, 2025 9:34 pm
Kuiper
"That would indeed be me!" the man says in a joyous tone, as he puts down the axe and approaches your group, offering Hanzel (and anyone else who'll take it) a rather firm handshake. "Welcome to my humble estate. You seem like the adventurous sort of folks, what's got you looking for me then?"
Jun 17, 2025 4:07 pm
Hanzel returns the handshake. "There's a girl we're trying to find - Jelenneth, the wizard Tauster's apprentice. He said you'd know if she'd been anywhere along the Churnett in the last few days."
Jun 17, 2025 10:14 pm
The warrior listened as Hanzel answered the only question which really mattered at the moment. The apprentice was missing and they needed to see if they could figure out where she had disappeared. Unfortunately, they had at least two days travel worth of country to consider, which was a lot of ground where she might have gone.
Jun 18, 2025 8:50 pm
Kuiper
"And he was right about it. I'm well acquainted with this wider region and its hazards, as well as Jelenneth herself. Been a week or so since I last saw her though." Kuiper takes a moment to collect his thoughts, tilting his head and scratching his chin. "I know Tauster sometimes sends her along Hog Brook to look for herbs and plants. Perhaps some mishap befell her there?"
Jun 18, 2025 9:14 pm
The warrior tried to remember what had happened at the inn, "At the inn, her father did not seem concerned, thinking that she was about somewhere, but the boy at the inn said she did not take her normal bag with her. Said it was left under the guest bed or something as much. I think that is what was raising the most concern is that she was at the inn that night, but then come morning she was not at the inn or at her family home."

He paused trying to remember more, "It is not clear really if she left on her own or disappeared soon after."
Jun 19, 2025 8:22 pm
Kuiper
"Well there's only one way to find out. If she somehow left to gather those herbs, Hog Brook would be my guess" Kuiper says with a shrug.

"Doesn't make much sense to go do that without her bag, but you know what wizards are like. Aloof and lost in their studies, or gathering a herb only under a full moon while wearing all red clothes and whatnot. Maybe she was in a rush. And if there's no clues along the Brook, at least you can exclude that scenario and go back to Milborne to investigate further. I can come with you, I know the place quite well."

"We'd be glad to have you!" Aldeera blurts out. She looks somewhat sheepish, but shrugs. "You know, in case of more trouble."

Kuiper
"Alright then, give me a moment to give Alvin a heads up, he'll keep an eye on the place while I'm away."

With that, Kuiper puts his lips together for a whistle and a boy in his late teens pops up his head from the back of the building. Kuiper heads over and apparently makes arrangements for things to be taken care of in his absence. After that, he enters the hut itself and within five or so minutes, he pops out again to join you.

His appearance is quite different from the shirtless man you saw chopping wood earlier. A rather elaborate bow is strapped to his back, the quiver hanging from his belt to rest on one hip while on the other side hangs a longsword in a dark tinted scabbard. Under his sturdy dark green travel cloak, you can tell he's wearing what appears to be a well crafted leather armour. All of a sudden, he's turned from a woodsman to a proper man of woodland action.

"Well, shall we be on our way then?"
