The Watchman Watches in Vain

The investigators are surprised to find a patrol vehicle parked in W Main St, close to the cemetery. Detective Ray Stuckey is standing in the street with an elderly local. Alex, a 'Merchant' man himself, recognises the elder as a stone cutter called Elijah Potts.

The auto's lights are on full beam, illuminating the graves and tombs of the wooded graveyard at the end of the street. A chill autumn fog hangs over the eerie scene.

The detective nods politely as the investigators approach. Stucky gets rid of the young patrolman, sending him to check on houses at the other end of the street.

"Ain't that the berries! Clancy Bleasdale got roped into this? Taking over from King and his Spook Crew? I'd stick to reporting on flower shows if I were you."

Stuckey turns to Elijah.

"Mr Potts, everyone here is safe now--these are Mr King's colleagues. Arkham people, good people. Do you want to tell us all the real story of what happened?"

The old stonecutter looks sadly at the arrivals.

"You're King's new folk? I hope things work out for you. Anyway, I'll try to help you like I helped King's crew in the old times..."

"Well, the "Old Citizens", paid a visit. Not just one or two like usual. A whole pack of them. Like ...hyenas, leaping and hopping. They've been roused for days, even coming out in the daytime. Outsiders being seeing them. Not good. Something has got them all restless."

"They ran into the yard behind the Public Schools building there. Halfway down the road on the right there. There was a fearful noise like a battle, a fight between devils. Then they came back carryin' --something, I fear a person--between them. But I hid when they got close. Their blood was roused. Couldn't make out who or what it was they were carryin' ... "
OOC:

Both Stuckey and Potts are cooperative, if cautious, and will support the investigators as long as the young patrolman (an outsider from Boston) does not witness any events.

We're getting into the Third Act, now. Rather than collect all your directions together, this time I may respond a bit more sequentially, but hoping that doesn't inhibit people form posting when they feel like it.
As usual please specify which investigative skills you are using and how many points you are offering (default is 0)

Before heading off to investigate further, Emma speaks to Potts. She begins by trying to remind neutral, but by the end of her question, she is becoming somewhat alarmed. She asks, "The 'Old Citizens'? Do you mean what I think you mean, Mr. Potts? Do deceased members of old Arkham families rise and walk as ghouls‽ And this is commonly known?!"
OOC:
If she had had time, Emma would have done as much research as possible. My Drive is Knowledge, after all, and my skill set is mostly research oriented. I'm happy to spend 1 or 2 points of Library Use for something useful?
May 3, 2025 1:54 am
Potts winces and looks over his shoulder at the graveyard, as though its denizens are likely to hear.

"We don’t use that ‘g’ word round here. The Old Citizens. The Neighbours, especially if you live in this block. And no, it’s not common knowledge except for those who need to know. Real old timers like me. A few in the city government and law. King’s operators. A handful more."

"But it’s true. If you were born hereabouts there’s some chance you have the Yard Curse. I thank the Lord that I have grown old without showing signs of it. But you are never safe. Some can ‘turn’ even after their apparent death. Mrs Chaplin told me that. She was one of King’s old team…"
OOC:

I’ll stick to the account in the earlier post that information about Arkham’s ghouls has been systematically excised from archives — this is Emma’s main discovery. But for the 2 extra library pool points she can have learned a formula of words that might ward against ghouls or even allow for parley. It would require an interpersonal spend such as reassurance. Even Credit Rating as a sign of respectable local roots. Not a spell as such, more a shibboleth. No stability roll required.

I'll take it! Thanks!

Clancy smiles at the suggestion. "There is no excitement in flower shows. Nor much investigating to be done. And speaking of investigating, this seems like a great use for my skills."

When Emma mentions ghouls, Clancy gives her the side-eye. "You can't seriously mean there are undead...creatures roaming around Arkham, do you? This could just be gangsters using scary stories as a cover to deter people from sticking their noses in gang business. I think the fastest way to clear this up is to inspect behind that building where the noises were heard. Sounds to me like a kidnap attempt or maybe a gang fight and an injured member was carried away for medical attention."

Melody thinks of the strange figure they spotted in the graveyard, from a distance. "But... Clyde dear, we saw one with our own eyes! Remember?"

To Potts, she says, "Oh, this is SO useful, Mr. Potts, thank you! We will make sure to tell Mr King how helpful you are being, for our investigation!"

"Now tell me, there is a dairy nearby... We heard they still use a cart and a horse, so charming! Do you know who runs the dairy? Someone was flying over it, and told us of some... strange round blotch at the dairy, visible from the air? Do you have any idea what it could be?"

trying Reassurance, investing 1 point if needed.

Clancy rubs his neck. "I saw something, sure, but it would be a mighty leap to assume it was an undead creature over a vagabond or an elderly person with a back problem."
May 3, 2025 12:53 pm
"You think all this is smoke and mirrors, Bleasdale? I hope you are right."

Potts shows interest in Melody’s mention of a dairy.

"It’s right over there on River. Arkham Dairy. You say there was a blotch close to it on a photo? Can you show me?"
OOC:

Just a quick clarification that the splotch was near the dairy, not on it.

The dairy and Pott’s house are both marked on the clickable map with blue tags, close to the cemetery.

If you share what you know about the photo with the two men, Stuckey will offer an opinion.
"Seems like we only have a second hand account of a photo of something. But a splotch on an aerial photo would be something big. A building say. I’d put my money on the abandoned church on the corner there. If there’s anything in this area with enough spook energy to show up in a photo, it’s that’s place."
OOC:

The West Church — 561 W Main Street— is also on the map, purple tag.

"Now look, that young patrolman grew up in Beantown, not Arkham. I don’t want him catching on that there’s something amiss here. Let’s go up to the yard behind the Schools building where Mr Potts said the ghouls — Applesauce! Sorry Mr Potts, Neighbours — had some sort of fight. "

"Then we’ll have to take off and leave it to you specialists."
OOC:

Anybody have/ willing to spend anything in History?

Public Schools Building - 601 W. Main Street - is also on the map, marked in grey. Do you accompany Stuckey and the patrolman into the yard behind it? Or hang back and see what happens?

Fascinated by what she has learned I the library, Emma is equally excited to hear about the strange phenomena making impressions on photographic film, even when taken from the sky above. And why were the men at the dairy all staring up at the plane? Seems odd. I wonder if they are responsible for the green light that brought the plane down? We shall have to investigate eventually. But first, the yard, and the church.
OOC:
Emma has 4 points in History! She'll spend 1 or 2 if needed. She will follow the others to the yard, but hang back.

Emma knows the established lore about the church. Built in 1801, abandoned in 1878 when moaning sounds came from the coffin of a co-founder suspected of wizardry.

Emma knows several further legends about the old place. Only those born in the sound of the church bells can be considered true Old Arkhamites. There is a secret ‘observation cell’ in the steeple’s internal scaffolding. It was used in the age of sail to sight ships coming up the Miskatonic. Later, by astronomers (and perhaps magicians) to perform observations. The church bells are lined with silver but have never been removed or damaged. Witches, flying over the Commonwealth on Samhain night, we’re believed to use the church as a landmark. And so on…

Just 1 pool point from history…

Emma shares what she knows about the Old West Church. She speculates, "I wonder if someone was up in that steeple and saw the plane? Maybe decided they wanted to bring it down? Could that blurry spot be where the church is?""

Melody follows the detective out of sight of the Boston patrolman, and to the Public Schools yard. She casts a glance at the patrolman, enjoying the secrecy.
"How thrilling, is it not?" she whispers to her companions.
May 3, 2025 10:58 pm
"Ok, let’s take a look. Bleasdale? Mr Cowley? Are you going to come with us?"

Stuckey notes that Emma is hanging back and nods, acknowledging her decision.

He orders the patrolman away, asking him to ‘phone a report from the police call box on River Street. Once the young man is out of sight, he draws and readies two police .45s, sticking one in his belt.

Let me know about any weapons or similar prep, and make any general tests ( rolls) you feel might be useful… you need to be up front to make a sense trouble check…

"Not smoke and mirrors, no. I saw something, all right. Creepy in fact. But it was all in shadow and without much detail. Hardly what I would call definitive proof. How many children see monsters in their closets or under their beds?" Clancy follows the others to the Public Schools yard, taking in details of the surroundings, jotting down notes in his notebook. "Thrilling isn't the word I would use. Maybe if it were not so late at night it would be. Why can't more secret things happen during daylight hours?" he grumbles.

"I've been wondering about that splotch. Do you think the pilot knew anything about Kirlian photography? Perhaps he caught something using that method?"

[ooc]For those who don't know what that is[/ooc]

Stuckey advances into the alley that leads to the rear of the Schools Building. He clicks on a police flashlight but its beam seems ineffective in the unlighted space.
OOC:

Looks like Kirlian photography doesn’t become current until 1940s but it is an interesting direction.

So breaking out of regular post order was fun as an experiment, but I need to go back to my usual pbp turn order — one GM post, then every player. Just so we’re all reacting to the same information.

Please indicate whether you are are next to Stuckey, right behind him, staying well back. etc. Also what you are carrying.

If you are beside or right behind Stuckey, make a sense trouble test, 1d6 plus a spend if you wish. EDIT: Removing this request as its better to roll only when combat takes place.

Melody steps in rhythm with Stuckey, enjoying the thrill of the nocturnal adventure.
Her eyes peer into the dark spaces, and her fingers instinctively curl around the grip of the small pistol she carries hidden in her handbag.

Investing 1 point in Sense Trouble

Clancy walks next to Stuckey. With a tall and athletic build, Clancy is used to leading or at least being near the front. He keeps his eyes out and his ears open.

OOC:

Thinking about it, I’m not applying the sense trouble rules correctly for pbp. i should ask players to roll only when they enter combat where they might be surprised. Apologies—@Dr_B you can either take your point back or keep that roll for the next future combat.

i’ll edit my post…
