Holy moly! You guys are off with a bang. I hadn't expected so much backstory to come out so fast, so I need to rewrite a lot of the scene I was going to post this morning. I'll try to get it up this afternoon or evening instead. This is epic already! :D

"Leshen..." The word comes out soft, almost whispered, but the moment she speaks it she knows it to be true. Memories of childhood, of huddling close around the hearth as the elders shared the story. Memories of lying awake at night, fearful of the creature in those tales.

She raises her voice. "It's just a story I heard long ago. Didn't think there was anything to it, but... these killings. The way the animals behave.
A Leshen could do it. It's said that they have power over wild beasts, wolves especially. And those ritual killings Johan spoke of, they sound like totems. It means it's expanding it's territory. Into Myrefall..." She falls silent for a moment. Maybe even towards Ormskirk? "If this is true, if it really is a Leshen, they'll need all the help they can get."

I'm having a little trouble narrating the flow of this conversation, so please bear with me for the jarring responses. I am going to be responding to them as they happened, not in one large post. I think that makes the most sense.

Psybermagi says:
Heading over to the provided supplies he begins packing everything neatly to optimize access for travel. As he does he muses about the timing. Winter is here and only a fool braves the storms. Even Kish isn't that reckless. Who would want to act now? Likely a monster swarm or some such?
As Kish moves up towards the assembled gear, his mother stops him with a gentle outstretched hand before he starts pawing at everything. "Kish," she says, her gaze like ice, "your words say one thing and your actions another. This is not the time for vain mockery. Myrefall burns, and we stand on the edge of darkness. You're better than that."
OOC:
@Psybermagi You can see some stuff in the trunk. Give me a perception check.

Yenna's eyes narrow slightly as she processes the Bard's words. She seems to be choosing her words carefully. "A Leshen," she says slowly, as if testing the word. "That would explain much; the animal behavior, the strange attacks..." Her voice trails off as she looks to Thorgrim, her gaze briefly flickering to the empty chair at the council table, where Kethra's father, Aldric, should be sitting.

Thorgrim's shoulders tense visibly as he continues, "they're said to have power over the forest itself. The wolves, the plants, even the very air is said to answer their call."

Yenna's voice takes on a new urgency. "If it's truly a Leshen, then Myrefall is in greater danger than we thought. The forest itself may turn against them." She looks to Thorgrim again, and there's a silent understanding between them. The air in the longhouse seems to grow colder, despite the roaring hearth.

Thorgrim's hand hasn't left his sword hilt. "Aye, and Ormskirk might not be far behind."

Yenna shakes her head slightly, as if she is having trouble processing the gravity of the situation. She focuses her attention on Leta, "you have seen it? Where? When?"

mathias0077 says:
I reported the first one to the council, but you dismissed it as just another strange winter. After that, I kept my findings to myself. The villagers had enough to worry about without tales of cursed animals.
Thorgrim steps forward, his stout dwarven frame in direct contrast to Johan’s slender height. Yet his presence presses into the room like a sharpened blade. He rests a calloused hand on the young man’s bicep.

"You brought it to me first, lad," Thorgrim says, voice low and rough. He looks down, throat working as he swallows hard. This is not a man used to apologizing. "I was a fool to brush you off."

A hush falls. The crackle of the hearth is suddenly too loud.

"If it truly is a Leshen," he continues—each word deliberate—"then I owe you more than an apology."

It was terrifying and as I sprinted for my very life. It commanded many soulless wolves to take me down. It was truly my Artemis that gave me shelter and let me escape sure death by tearing of the twisted wolves. It was a nightmare and has just happened. I'm still feeling the shaking from it."

Tired Leta doesn't look like she even slept last night. With the news being told, she has lost what boldness she tried to portray. Brave Leta was gone and replaced one that felt fear of death. Still, she tries to keep herself posed. It is obvious that she has been shaken and still putting herself together.

"I feel that I must take action against this. My Artemis guides me."

Kethra readies her paladinic self.
I stand with you Lady Leta. Winters now long past, bandits invaded Ormskirk, violated our land, and ever since then I have known what I am, and what I must do. I will defend our village, even as it means leaving it.

Kish gives his mother a glare then dismisses her from consideration. I merely intend to get what I need for the mission, as the council has instructed. My skills will need every tool I can get. If it is truly that urgent we should use the daylight we still have. he states simply and proceeds to sort his gear first while looking over the proffered items into usable and useless to himself, all the while tallying weight and cursing his weak body. As he goes over the offered supplies his ears follow the conversation but he will leave the lore to those suited for it.

His mind wanders a bit at thoughts of the future. Survival and strength are all that matter. If these things are that bad it will be a hard winter no matter the outcome. No winters here are soft. If the towns survive then refugees and destruction will put a strain on the survivors. And should they fail . . . Fleeing the winter storms with a pack of these "Leshen" at ones heels does not sound much better. Preparations can only help so much and best to prepare for success he thinks and turns his mind back to the matter at hand.

After sorting his own pack and considering what to add from the town stores He Laughs internally at his mothers challenge. Will she block his way and weaken the parties chances or aid him and the party as well. Not outright challenging her, that never goes well, he looks to the others as grows impatient with his mothers delay and interference. The others know their skills and needs better than he so best leave their own needs to their own hands. But maybe he can convince a couple of the others to help carry items of use, but best to save that for last.

Johan will nod to Thorgrim"All is well Thorgrim and I don't take much in the way of insult. The Ravenclaws have been protectors of our vill from its founding. I will do all in my power to see this task carried out." Johann just can't shake the feeling that this has been coming on for a long time. Maybe something was done to the wilds and this is the way it fights back.

Kish:

What do you mean by "get mom out of the way"? Are you trying to placate her? Are you trying to get her to leave the longhouse? Are you trying to just get her to move away from the chest?

Either way, I'd like some form of RP as to what you're saying or doing for your Persuation check.
OOC:
Also holy moly another nat 20?! 🤣

OOC:
yes, whatever it takes to deescalate. Basically Kish doesn't want to deal with her in a confrontational manner

Honestly was confused that she stopped Kish after we were told they provided equipment for our use. He did mouth of but that is too be expected of him. Kish was simply adding anything he might need for extended wilderness trekking.
Ie food, tent, bedroll. Things he would not normally have as he would tend to stay close to town or homesteads he is familiar with. What else was there, based on my perception roll?

The previous posts was the short attempt to deescalate. I will expand on the conversation later then

Kish sighs internally at his exasperatingly suborn mother and murmurs softly, so as to not carry to others.
I will help the council and Myrefall. I am not so dumb or foolish as to think a threat like this can be ignored. Nor do I forget those who have aided me in times past. You know I have friends in Myrefall. Do you really think me so callus as to let them suffer and die without even going to see if I may be of aid? Kish knows his mother does not think he has honor but he does have a code, and debts must be paid. For now she is reaction emotionally to barbs she normally ignores, a somewhat worrying fact, and he tries to sooth her to a point she can act instead of reacting. see persuasion 18 above, and let me know what I see with my lucky appraisal of proffered goods with the nat 20 perception, wink wink :)

Leta looks about. Are the gathered supplies in this room or some adjacent room?

Yenna’s rigid posture eases as she steps forward and lays a warm hand on Kish’s forearm. "You speak wisely, my son. I was too quick to doubt you—thank you for reminding me." She draws back and reaches into the chest.

She holds aloft the lantern. "This is the Winterlight Lantern. Its glow keeps the air above freezing—a small mercy on the coldest nights." The Latern needed no introduction; all of you know of it, as it typically hangs in this very longhouse and has been in the village for as long as anyone can remember. She nestles it back in its furs and Thorgrim steps up, taking his turn at the chest.

He produces a dark smooth stone that is otherwise uninteresting in appearance, turning it in his rough palm. "The Tracker’s Stone. Swipe it in an ‘X’ across an item, and you’ll always know its direction—until dawn, at least."

Yenna draws out the horn last. "And this is the Scout’s Horn. In the howling north wind, only its call carries—up to three hundred feet—and only those you choose will hear it. Three uses, three lifelines."

She places the three tools on the map-studded table. "These are more than gifts," she says, voice soft but firm. "They are our trust—our hope. Go, and use them well. Make us proud—and come home safe."

Thorgrim lets out a gravelly chuckle. "Remember, you carry not just our tools, but the spirit of Ormskirk with you." He lifts a horn-rimmed mug from the table, then lowers it. "Myrefall awaits. We, and the entire village, stand with you."

The fire crackles, shadows dancing on the council walls, and the wind beyond the doors howls like a warning.
OOC:

Magical Items

Winterlight Lantern
- Creates a 10-foot radius of warmth, akin to a small camp fire
- Requires no fuel
- Emits bright blue light in a 20-foot radius and dim light in another 20 foot raidus, just like a torch

Tracker's Stone
- Can mark one item per use (this could be a tree to find a location again, or a belt buckle to find a specific creature)
- Mark lasts until dawn
- Shows direction to the marked item
- Can only have one active mark at a time

Scout's Horn
- Can be heard clearly up to 300 feet only by the designated creatures
- Works through wind and storm
- Can choose up to 10 other creatures who will be the only ones to hear the call
- It effectively acts as a one-way cast of the "Message" cantrip

Mundane Equipment

This mission is obviously of the utmost importance and thus, a lot of mundane equipment is available for free. When I say this I mean stuff like rations and rope, not weapons or armor. Just ask me here or in a PM and we'll get that sorted out. The town is rallying around equipping you all for this mission.

Starting Equipment

All of you will begin with free warm winter traveling clothing appropriate to their background and culture, as they have lived in this region their entire lives. This includes:

- Heavy fur-lined cloak
- Thick woolen underlayers
- Sturdy winter boots
- Wool socks
- Fur-lined gloves
- Face protection (scarf or mask)

If you previously bought winter clothing when purchasing equipment, feel free to take that gold back and put it back into your pockets. Apologies for not mentioning this earlier in the character creation process.
