Chapter 2.3: Return to Hochoch

Three days with unchecked evil festering in the forest chafed at Arya's sense of urgency. However, her remarkable self-control prevented rash decisions. Instead, she sought out Diana the town's other cleric, to share the unsettling events of their recent journey and entrust her with the holy symbol of Merikka found on their adversaries.

Having secured her lodging at the inn for the coming days, her companions from the DB will find her in front of a table at dinner, surrounded by locals drawn to her radiant presence and eager to hear tales of Pelor or simply to bask in her serene beauty and grace.

After Aanbo and Theran have completed their training, Olpert returns with the proceeds of the sale of the various items. Split between the 7 adventurers (Aanbo, Arya, Chase, Jonel, Myrtha, Rosemary, Theran) and the Jarl family, each gets 16 eagles, 11 seals, and 6 cubs.

With enough experimentation, Chase finds that he can call what number will be rolled on the magic die.

As all this is happening, Morton arrives in town. Morton had been inducted into the Dungeon Busters organization some time ago, but was doing various odd jobs for Cecily. When he recently finished those tasks, Cecily announced that Morton was ready to take a position at a field office, and asked him which office he wanted. Remembering some of the people who started with him weeks ago, Morton asked after them. As soon as he found out that they had gone on to Hochoch, Morton had selected that destination.

Chase heads off to consult with Larissa. Once again, Lienne proves very helpful to the ranger, though she takes his arm and walks with him through the town, sharing intimate details of various passersby with him as they walk. Eventually, she leads him to a small cottage and gestures for him to continue. "I don't get along with Larissa," she says, "But tell me about your visit afterward!" A somewhat portly man answers the door. "Yes?" When Chase explains that he wishes to consult with Larissa, the man nods, calling over his shoulder, "You've got another admirer, dear!" He winks at Chase. "ANOTHER ONE??" comes the good-natured yell from inside. "Tell him to go away! I've already had too many rangers wooing me today!" At Chase's frown, the man laughs. "Haha! Come in, come in; that's just our little joke. You may enter." The man introduces himself as Barl, Larissa's husband. Larissa, a cheerful woman with greying hair, is busy with some baking, flour puffing from her hands as she waves at him. But Chase notices that, as bright and cheerful as Larissa seems, the light of the fire and the several candles in the house doesn't fully touch her, as if she is in the shade of something between her and every light source. She puts the tin in the oven and wipes her hands on her apron. "Well!" she says, smiling kindly up at Chase, "You want something identified, is that right? It takes time and effort; I can do the first item for 25 eagles."
May 22, 2025 9:44 am
Chase will enter with the armor "Hello my lady." with a slight bow"Yes I would like to have this armor and bone die identified ." Chase will hand Larissa 25 eagles.
OOC:
I will give my share from the equipment to the Jarls. I have deducted the 25 eagles for ID. Is Rosemary still playing? Haven't see a post in awhile.
May 22, 2025 1:01 pm
Larissa identifies the black leather armor as leather armor +1.
OOC:
Chase has already figured out what the bone die does: he can choose a number, and the next roll of the die will come up with that number.
As for the Jarls, you're welcome to donate that to them, but remember that they are already getting that amount from what would have been Manthis' share, as he's disappeared.
May 22, 2025 4:25 pm
During her third day in Hochoch Myrtha would visit the Jarls to see how they are settling down, and visit the merchant streets / quarter to examine weapons and armor that might be necessary.
OOC:
I've updated Myrtha's sheet, adding the coinage, the spear+1, and the longbow to her inventory. She'll also buy a quiver and 20 arrows to go with her recently acquired longbow. She'll be looking for other adventuring gear that might be useful (list to come), and might consider buying a steed, a pack animal, or a small cart. That would allow the party to carry more, and to have decent camping gear and rations at hand, if necessary.
May 22, 2025 9:37 pm
Chase after finding out what the Leather Armor is will go back to the room provided by the DB and remove his Scale armor and don the black leather. He will then find Olpert and donate the scale armor in case a new recruit need it.
May 22, 2025 9:47 pm
As Chase moves back into town after dropping off his old armor he sees Myrtha doing some shopping and heads over to her."How are you doing? I know Reptile was a big loss for you. You forge strong bonds while traveling and fighting beside someone. That was the biggest reason I liked being a Boundary Warden. I lost a friend on a mission when we were young and fresh in the army. It was hard." Looking around he will change the subject."Doing some shopping? I think it would be wise if we all bought a horse. Move around quicker, carry more, and have fresher legs for the fight."

Finished with his own training, Theran will start looking into the possibility of better armor, although... nothing metal. Perhaps a hardened wood breastplate? He didn't think he had the coin to afford it, but he had to at least determine if such a thing was even available.
May 23, 2025 2:49 pm
Myrtha asks Sara, who directs her to Crisjen, a reputable fletcher. Myrtha spends 2 eagles on quiver and 20 arrows.

Chase finds the black leather suit a little tight-fitting at first, but it stretches out as he wears it throughout the day. Olpert receives the donation of Chase's scale armor gratefully.

Theran finds a woodcarver, Raymond, and presents his proposal: would Raymond be able to carve him a breastplate out of wood? Raymond is intrigued at the idea. He says he can do it, but it will take time and money to get all of Theran's measurements and carve it especially to fit him. Lumber is too thin; he'll need to start with a larger piece of wood. He doesn't have a hardwood log large enough now, but he can commission Tym to select a good-sized tree and fell it. Accordingly, a wooden breastplate hardened for combat (in all other respects functioning as a normal metal breastplate) would take 20 days to craft and cost 400 eagles.

With all the treasure that the party brought out of danger to Hochoch, each of the 7 PCs also gain 91 XP.

As I said before, Morton the half-elf Dungeon Buster arrives in town as the party is doing shopping and finishing their training. "Welcome!" Olpert Razorsson greets him when Morton asks for directions and arrives at the construction site that will be the guild's hall eventually. "Cecily sent us another one, eh? I remember you from the orientation. Well, I think we have enough hands here in Hochoch. Why don't you join the others on their next foray? A few of our members - Quest, Joseph, Manthis - have gone missing, and Joseph was last seen by the group that's going back to Orlane. They're also trying to reopen trade with Orlane, which is responsible for providing most of the food in the region. If we don't, there's possibility of famine within the year. The farmers here can't increase their production in one growing season, and we don't have cash on hand enough to establish new trade with more distant farm communities. So that's two things you'll be trying to do in Orlane: find our missing people if you can, and get rid of whatever is preventing Orlane from providing food to the region."
May 23, 2025 3:46 pm
"This sounds excellent. Would you accept 300 gold now, to get started, with the remainder to be paid upon completion?" Theran asks the woodcarver as he looks over a variety of Raymond's wears. "I will be honest -- I fully trust you to complete the order. I simply don't have the full price yet, but the timeline you've set forth should be ample time to accrue the difference."

If Raymond agrees, Theran will hand over 100 eagles and the 20 imperial dragon coins.
OOC:
"Can you help me not have to lug this all over the countryside?" Lol

Anyway, with all the coin coming and going I believe we gave the Jarl family Manthis' share. What was the total donated coin? Trying to determine how well off they are for their temporary new life.

"Unless there are immediate plans for all to leave soon on some needed action, I should invest some quality time in the nice local inn here. Least the recent weather has been fair. "

Jonel decides to slip away for a bit. He inquires about a tavern in Hochoch. Having the relevant information, he sets off.

OOC:
Manthis was still around to get the 20 imperial dragons, but disappeared during the last three days. So as far as I know, the share for the Jarl family was just from the proceeds of the sale of the loot: 16 eagles, 11 seals, and 6 cubs (which is ~$1716 in modern spending power; more than enough to pay for food and modest lodging while Abel and the older kids find work to do in the longer-term).

Having taken one of the longest absences, Aanbo is late to catch up with those idle in the tavern or about town. He apologizes to Olpert for the wait, but asserts that he has a clearer mind to pursue the Dungeon Buster's goals in Orlane and he is ready to proceed.

When the money from the sale of confiscated goods is handed out, Aanbo directs his portion to the Jarl family.
OOC:
Add another 16 eagles, 11 seals, and 6 cubs to the Jarl family savings account!
May 26, 2025 5:46 am
Raymond agrees to three-quarters of the money up front, but he points out that it will be a full day for the two of them to take and record all of Theran's measurements, which would mean another day's expenses (lodging) for him and everyone else before they could set out to Orlane again.

Myrtha listened silently as Chase shared some of his own past, and his feelings about loss and the dangerous business they were both in.

"Now that Reptile's body been taken in by Olpert, I'm feeling better," she stated simply. "I'd known him for only a couple of weeks, but we'd travelled by ourselves; one listens while walking, and learns," she continued, much of the grief of the past few days seemingly lifted from her. "He was a strong companion, trustworthy and reliable," she added, "his death is a loss for the team. And if Manthis' is really gone, our frontline is becoming thinner. No matter, we'll manage with what we have."

As they continued to walk, she explained what she was looking to buy. Horses or a cart seemed a good idea, though that might mean hiring a carter or someone to stay with the animals while the dungeon busters were busy busting dungeons. Otherwise the horses could be mauled by stray beasts in the woods, or stolen. She also wanted to buy a tent or two, so the party could camp in greater comfort.
OOC:
Maybe this should be a party discussion over what to acquire. Hiring a hireling is pretty old school, but might be a practical solution to keep watch over our camp and our vehicle or animals.

Theran pays the 300 eagles to Raymond and works with him on the fourth day.
OOC:
If anyone still wishes to purchase mounts/supplies/etc you can just list them now.

Note that everyone has expenses during this visit to Hochoch, aside from any purchases they've made.
Aanbo and Theran each spent 45 eagles for training.
Chase and Myrtha each spent 30 eagles for training.
Everyone else spent 2 eagles for food and lodging.
At the start of the fifth day, Olpert calls all the Dungeon Busters together again to discuss assignments.
May 28, 2025 6:29 am
Olpert Razorsson looks somberly at the collected adventurers: Aanbo, Albertus, Arya, Chase, Durren, Jonel, Karliel, Klak, Kragga, Morgran, Morton, Myrtha, Rosemary, Sara, Thacogygax, Theran, and Xana. "Each of you has done good service and heroic deeds for the people of Hochoch. But now one of our own has been killed, and another taken. We cannot abandon the tasks we've taken on, but at the same time we must do what we can to save Joseph, avenge Reptile, and restore trade with Orlane. To that end, the following Dungeon Busters will go back to Orlane to proceed with these things:
Theran, Myrtha, Morton, Jonel, Chase, Arya, and Aanbo."
May 28, 2025 11:05 am
OOC:
So a mule, pack saddle, bit and bridle, 3 tents, and 10 days of feed comes out to 21 eagles, and 5 seals. I wonder if we turn in a receipt if we will get reimbursed. Once we get to Orlane we can probably leave the mule in the thicket around Ramne house.
