Whatever happened here, it's over but none of you will ever be the same again. The corpse of James Gardiner is unmoving again. Within minutes, a patrolman arrives and will likely have questions for all of you.
Martin, comes out his reverie and is taken to a hospital for observation, but refuses to let go of the book.
Lori has no memory of what happened in those last moments. She doesn't get to recover her books, but perhaps the police will be open to her claiming them.
Joe, unable to obtain what he was looking for may have to look over his shoulder for a time. Once the police are done with him, perhaps he'll leave the city.
Rita, dismayed at the loss of her favourite tenant, at least protected her son, the thing most precious to her.
Bruno, may have been the hero of the day, but the police might not see it that way. He taps his pocket to make sure the things he grabbed are safely stowed for later inspection.
[ +- ] Bouts of Madness and Cthulhu Mythos
Martin, every time you enter a Bout of Madness, you gain Cthulhu Mythos points as you gain some insight into the hidden world around you. This skill can be used to identify anything related to the Mythos. Your first bout awards 5 points of Mythos. However, as a result, your max sanity reduces by the same amount (not your current)
Martin has also developed an Underlying Insanity, this manifests as an obsession with the Book of Dreams . This illness can only be removed with professional help.
Over the following weeks, you piece together the truth of the situation. James Gardiner enjoyed a vivid and fantastical dream life but somehow lost his ability to dream. He sought occult solutions to regain his dreams and found a spell in a tome that he believed would open the way for his dreams to return.
Unfortunately, the spell and the book were cursed. Some strange entity from another world tricked Gardiner into performing the rituals he found in the tome. One prepared his body to become a vessel for the foul entity while the other led to his death, sending poor Gardiner’s soul
into oblivion. His empty body could then be possessed by the entity—just as you discovered.
Due to your timely actions, you can feel proud to have played your part in foiling the schemes of a monster from beyond.
