Getting the Ducks all in a Row

LC's reaction to being nominated (or elected) as captain of the Athelstone. It's written in LC’s signature voice—wry, diplomatic, just a little dramatic, and full of reluctant charm.

LC Rains leans back slowly in his chair, a datapad still in one hand—paused mid-scroll as the weight of the crew’s words sinks in. He glances around the common room of the Athelstone, eyes flicking from Said Ma’s calm gaze to Bronz’s quiet nod, from Tamm’s stoic posture to Tharrok’s attentive ears.

"So... Captain, is it?" he says, his voice somewhere between amusement and disbelief.

"Now, don’t get me wrong—flattered, truly. Deeply. Moved, even." He taps the datapad against his palm thoughtfully. "But I just want to make sure we all understand what’s happening here. You’re asking me—former law clerk, starport customs liaison, short term prisoner of the Driantia Zhdantia (Zhodani Consulate), Navigator and one-time insurance fraud investigator—to sit in the big chair and wear the big title."

He sets the pad down gently, eyes sweeping across the table.

"Let me be clear: I’m not the best pilot on this ship. I don’t know how to recalibrate a fusion manifold or reroute life support through a gravitic bypass. If the hull breaches, I’m as likely to quote subsector liability clauses as I am to grab a patch kit."

A beat. Then a grin.

"But I do know how to keep the banks off our backs, how to make smugglers smile and inspectors look the other way. I can sell ice to a belt miner, turn a paper trail into a profit margin, and talk our way out of a hostile boarding party with nothing but a commlink and a contract."

He stands now, smoothing the front of his jacket—a subtle, deliberate motion.

"If that’s the sort of Captain this crew wants… if you’re all quite sure you want to hand me the metaphorical keys to the bridge—then I’ll accept."

"But I don’t lead alone. This ship flies because each of you is bloody brilliant at what you do. You want me to steer the paperwork and handle the heat—fine. But the Athelstone is ours. Equal shares. Equal stakes. We rise, we burn, or we coast—together."

He reaches for his tea, gives a mock salute with the mug.

"Now, someone remind me—does this mean I have to start wearing a hat?"
Tharrok’s ear flicks a couple of times. "I'm the pilot. I fly the ship."

"Pilot, Engineer, Computer Engineer, Deck Sweeper and list maker, got it!" she bit her tongue rather than use the Solomani term dog's body; some Vagr were a little touchy about such things!

"I know this sector pretty well as well, grew up on Mora and served in the 73rd. Oh, and I guess the whole noble title might be of some use sometimes!"

Tamm nods his head when Leilani finishes describing her skills.

A dedicated Computer Engineer would be useful.

Hey folks! Being a Bear of little brain, I am getting so confused with all the forums and where we ought to be posting! Leilani and I have been assigned the same quarters and I want to introduce myself to her, but where in this universe of sub-forums am I supposed to do that? :-(

LC Looks at T-Jive;
"Of course, I was speaking metaphorically during my acceptance speech."

Looking at the T-Jive square on "Make no mistake, YOU are the pilot. I am not."

LC looks like he is thinking and quickly adds;
"We have Leilani that can second as the pilot and be your back-up during in system piloting. That makes the T-Jive the Flight Division Chief with as Bronz outlined, Leilani and computer systems tech and myself as the Captain-Navigator"

LC turns to Tamm, Rin and of course Bronz

"Tamm it looks like you have engineering section under control with Bronz and Rin."

Looking at Said Ma, Alice and Lu-Yam
"And of course Ma-Ma is in charge of the Commerce Division with Alice and Lu-Yam."

LC look at the displayed tasks for the crew and goes through them checking them off the Trivid display for the crew;

"So we have elected the Captain..., assigned rooms, the crew positions, and everyone has an equal shares. Did I forget anything?"

Looking at Alice, Said-Ma and Bronz...then to Decherrek who provided the most input.

It does? Six dudes and I think we are 9 ? 10? Who is who? Oh, lord, I am so lost LOL

OOC:
Well the OCC did say 'crappy AI image', the picture is not of the crew but a representation of the crew. Heck there is no red head female, no Leilani, the Vargr looks nothing like T-Jive and you are right, there should be 9 crew plus Decherrek the Drone. Ugh bad AI image try... LOL!

SoI,
The picture doesn't match the crew but it's about how we all cooperate. The tallest guy represents Tamm and TJ is represented by the German Shepherd. Our pixie, Leilani, is sitting by TJ. It looks like LC is taking the picture. It's a good representation not meant to be 100% accurate.

Sure, I understand you folks go a long way back, and I’m NOT criticising the AI’s artwork. All I’m trying to say is that as a new (unrepresented) crew member I’m struggling to know what to do, where to do it, whether I’m welcome, and what the hell is really going on! You folks seem to be quite cliquey and not terribly helpful or welcoming! 🤷‍♂️ just saying thats how I feel….
May 10, 2025 12:01 am
tbh, that critique doesn’t apply to you, Muns!

OK, we can assume then that everyone (all crew) have bought-in for 62,000cr each.
OOC:
New characters will all be assumed to have earned and saved that much in the past few months so they do not have to deplete their current assets. Old/(original) crew should deduct that amount from their funds. Please try to keep this up-to-date on your character records!
This means the ship starts with 62k x 9 = 558,000cr in "ship's accounts". That's quite a good sum for a start-up Far Trader.

Also remember to deduct 'generic' personal expenses of 10x SOC per week in port to cover miscellaneous purchases, entertainments, and etc. Large purchases or significant actions (like perhaps taking the deluxe 3-hour tour) would be in addition to that.
When in doubt, ask! I'll try to remind you. Players are responsible for keeping track of their personal funds and significant possessions.

Good points. I think some of the new players are a bit 'boggled' and don't know where to start. I hope once this organizational stage is done we can start getting more roleplay oriented. When in doubt shoot me a private-message. Otherwise just start your character 'talking' to the other crew.

Normally in port the crew has one week to get all the business that needs doing done. Much of this is 'behind the scenes' and does not need roleplaying unless something unusual (ie, from the GMs warped imagination) occurs.

I'll be asking each player-character to declare 3 significant actions for in-port time. This is covered in the 'wiki'. Fueling, re-provisioning, dealing with the port bureuacracy are normal activities. So is taking a 24-hour 'R&R' and having a 'crew's night out' before departure. So a crew-members task list might be: Helping the Purser find High-Passage passengers. Hitting the Skid-Row flop-houses looking for Low-Berth passengers. Hanging out at the Travellers Aid Society public-lounge and hoping to get leads on high-profit trade goods... Each of those would need some role-play and a dice-roll. Coordinating with other crew members and doing things in a coordinated and somewhat well planned manner is to your collective advantage!

Actually Tamm Llogan is proxy for Deloras Biga's share. My assumption as a player is that Llogan is watching her share, but this is a non-voting shareholder. so it is Cr620,000 in the 'ship's account
LC writes down in the Merchant Charter - non voting member by Deloras's share .

David our esteem GM will usually make a post so our characters can conduct these in-port actions/reaction and counter actions (LOL) and help the Steward and Pursers with the speculative trade. On all of the threads, I agree we do have a few threads going on at the same time and we need a little player discipline for the new players. I have to be honest myself when I lose track of which Thread to respond to...FOMO. But I have learned with David and the PbP games is to keep in the thread for the roleplay, like this one.

Time-keeping is a genuine problem in play-by-post games. Don't worry too much about "time warp" for personal interchanges and what not. Our "turns" will be (generally) week-long intervals and I will try and "time stamp" new threads as they are created. If we get into a 'situation', which I'm sure we will from time to time, then the hour-by-hour and day-today become important. For now not so much.

I miss the wiki function from Tavern-Keeper. I did port most of that information over, but its not well laid out and is a 'jumble-dash' to try and find anything. But it is worth browsing through that information to get a sense of how things go along.

First real "turn" coming soon. Hopefully we'll get into a groove and things will get sorted out better. Yay!

Sorry about that ...
I for one hate clicks, so I get it

It's true a couple of us have played together before and I hate to see players feeling like they are the 3rd wheel.

As a player, you just chime in as you see fit. Most of us just say what we want and don't take offense. If offense is felt, just let us know and we will verify our intent. We love to play in character without the player being offended. But this is a game and we want everyone to enjoy themselves.

That said, just ask like you did and we will help to the best of our abilities.

Mama will now try to fulfill her role.

Oh, and I too get confused on where I am in each post line, so your not alone. We are all trying to learn this new site, so we all understand what you are saying. The Wiki helps a lot.
