Preparing for Departure (Fornice)

May 11, 2025 9:10 pm
FORNICE/Mora/Spinward Marches. Ground Port 2A servicing the Arcology of Port-au-Prince. 0800, April 11, Imperial year 1115.

Finally!
The ground crew has finished the last of the maintenance work. The crew has signed the charter, each 'buying in' for 62,000 credits each. L.C. Rains has been elected "Captain". Watches have been set. A "jump plan" for Jokotre-system has been filed.

Departure has been set for April 18!

The ATHELSTONE is in tip-top shape, having gotten the full yearly-maintenance and pre-selling buff-up by the First Bank of Fornice's team. It even has that new starship smell.

Now its time to start making some 'cred'!

L.C. has heard from his 'contact' in Port-au-Prince, "Smugg", about 50-tons of freight and 4 high-passengers that require expeditious transport to a ground station on Jokotre. Will the crew agree to taking that on?

Said Ma (with Alice's assistance) has located 5 dTons of basic (non-prescription) painkillers available for sale in Port-au-Prince for 5,000cr/ton with the sales rep asserting that they can expect to get 7,500cr/ton on Jokotre. "Easy Money".

The public 'board' shows Low and Middle Passengers available for transport to Jokotre, but they must be picked up at the main High Port, not at Port-au-Prince. You might 'kick-back' a little to have these prospective passengers shuttle down for boarding at your current berth.

Public Boards show nothing interesting for Jokotre; though there is enough simple freight (1,000cr/ton revenue) to fill your hold.

There is still time to "scare up" High Passengers or additional speculative cargo if you make the effort.

(Pending committment to LC's 'contract'?) Each character should deduct their basic week-in-port expenses (SOC x 10 credits) plus make any purchases beyond that.

Anything I'm missing? Let's get this locomotive on track!

LC steps into the Athelstone’s common room, the low lighting flickering off brushed metal and the ever-present hum of the ship systems steady beneath his boots. He’s smiling—but the kind of smile that always comes paired with a disclaimer.

"Alright, everyone—crew muster. I’ve just returned from an enlightening conversation with one of our more… well-connected associates. Smugg."

He lets the name sit for a moment, gauging reactions.

"He’s offered us a job. A tidy one. Simple delivery run. Fifty tons of machine parts headed to a station—small city, Jokotre’s sea region, light industrial setup, mining presence. Nothing too fancy. The sort of place where parts are parts, and credits spend just fine."

LC leans casually against the galley table, flipping a small holo-display of the station and route.

"The payout is rich. Triple rate: 3,000 credits per ton. That’s 150,000 for the haul. On top of that? Four technicians riding high passage—10k each. Another 40,000 in revenue. And here’s the best part: we don’t pay a single credit in overhead. Cargo’s loaded, passengers pre-cleared, all insured. Smugg’s footin’ the bill."

He pauses, eyes flicking across the room.

"Now, I know what you’re thinking. Jokotre. Archdiocese territory. But this station isn’t on the pilgrimage circuit. No firewalkers, no theology audits. Smugg will handle the access to sacred zones, meaning Jokotre surface and provide us the required Pilgrim’s Writ. Where we are going is an industrial site with a logistics backlog and a serious need for repair parts. We fly in, drop off the cargo, leave with our pockets heavier and no philosophical entanglements—unless you count listening to the technicians complain about shipboard coffee."

"Smugg says it’s solid. I trust him—mostly because I know how much he’s skimming off the top. That kind of greed doesn’t risk itself lightly."

He straightens, arms folded now, tone shifting to practical.

"I say we take it. It’s easy coin, solid rep-building in a sensitive region, and it gives us an excuse to scout the territory for more legitimate—or at least profitable—trade. Thoughts?"

"We used to get there missionaries turn up on Mora, pain in the ass most of the time as well. Would turn up at the docks and try to trash the little shrines to Mama Mora. Doesn't matter what you believe; if you're going to set out on a world ocean, it never hurts to give a little offering of rice just in case! And y'know sailors who've spent their wages on booze loved any excuse to have a fight." Leilani gave a little shrug

"Not sure if that's much use, besides, don't bring up religion in their presence, I guess?"
May 12, 2025 10:33 am
"Captain, May I ask a question?", Alice asks and once she has LC's attention she continues, "how much cargo space is left with this job's payload? I'm thinking we might optimise our returns with a little speculative trading. Mama and I have found a pharma supplier servicing Jokotre. They have some inventory over-flow we can acquire - 5 dTons of Painkillers @ 5,000cr/ton. Market value is around 7,500cr/ton."
May 12, 2025 10:55 am
"Tamm know he trust Smugg about as far as Tamm can throw him. But, if Smugg-fest say it's easy credits well, by all means we take the cargo. Crew takes all of risk, too. Ok, Tamm in."
OOC:
The dice roll was just a test. Please ignore it.

OOC:
The ship has a total capacity of 61 dTons, with 5 of that potentially 'hidden'. 50 tons for the freight, 5 tons if Mama confirms the pharmaceuticals purchase, leaving 6 tons remaining. 1 High Passenger could still be taken on. 10 low-berth passengers can be contracted from the public 'want to travel' list with no problem.

Bronz turns to Rin, his tone calm but direct. "Since we’ve got a week, I’ll show you around the engines. We should take a look at the low berths too—last time they gave us trouble, and we don’t need that kind of attention again."

He glances over at Leilani. "You can tag along if you like. You’re flight crew, but it won’t hurt to know how things run back here —unless LC or T-Jive have something else lined up for you."

Then, with a nod to Tamm: "That sound good to you?"

OOC:
Seeing the GM has answered the question about cargo space.
LC thinks for a moment and then replies;
"I am good with you and Ma-Ma on getting the rest of the cargo hold filled up. Please make sure that you get the proper Trade Benediction which is a formal blessing given to off-world traders who operate in accordance with ecclesiastical law. Often improves relations and speeds cargo inspections. We should be able to work this through the current Archdiocese of Ram ' Office of Stellar Ethics usually accomplished by a 'Sanctifier' with your current contracted cargo on manifest. The Office will issue a Trade Licensure for the caro. If there are any problems bring it to my attention immediately."

LC smiles at the two and says
"Remember those who play by the rules and show piety—even feigned—often find the Archdiocese can be a loyal partner. They are deeply appreciative of what they call 'Starbound Companions,'."
May 13, 2025 8:01 am
"Might it help to know something about Ramian piety? I don't know this god they follow - can you brief us?"
OOC:
Whoops! You already provided a comprehensive brief - thanks

Bronz checks in with Tamm.

"Sounds good. Tamm take rest of time before launch to go over repairs & overhaul. Any of the Engineering Crew welcome to join.
Definitely check the freezers; computer, electronics, maintenance. Tamm don't think they would be skipped during the annual maintenance but better safe than sorry."

Tamm takes the time to run self -checks and basically see if the various systems load and come on as expected. He's not working in depth but all systems are checked. The log shows there was a problem with an electric circuit before the annual check. He pulls up the floor panels to do a true visual inspection and uses hand tools, like a multimeter, to check the flow of electricity & integrity of the circuit.
"Rin, there was a circuit wired incorrectly before overhaul. Please help Tamm check it."
OOC:
Will Rin help with the last task?

LC replies to Lielani
"Actually a simple study of the Archdiocese can be found, and remember the golden rule 'do onto others as you would do onto you'. In this case, the stars and light are holy and we don't make fun of that. "

He sends a simple library message to all about the 'Archdiocese of Ram' and the main library data file on the Archdiocese so everyone has a basis and hopefully this will lesson problems.

The galley smells like rehydrated spiced noodles and cheap stim-coffee—strong, bitter, and essential. LC Rains stands at the head of the table, a clean, portable holoslate projecting a tidy 7-day schedule in Imperial Blue. He taps a stylus against the edge of the unit and waits for the last fork to drop and mug to be set down.

"Alright, crew. I know port calls feel like holidays in disguise, but we’re running a business here—and the cargo bay doesn’t fill itself. And we have already burned one day..." He gestures to the hovering slate, which pings as it updates with visual blocks for each day.

"I understand that Tamm has the Engineering division under control and is doublechecking everything in the low berth and that gets a priority. But remember all work and no play make Tamm a dull boy. Oh wait, he is already dull unless Said Ma gets some drinks in him, then oh boy, hang on"

LC smiles then looks to Said-Ma, Alice and Yu-Lam
"Said Ma, Alice and Yu-Lam have the cargo set, except the last 5 tons, so you have the next two days until April 13 to complete this. So if you need any help form the crew, let us know. And we need to find one more High Passage." looking at all three "One more should be a problem, right?"
Any response form Ma-Ma, Alice or Yu-Lam???

LC looks at his portable holoslate (Tri-VID slate to some) and then looks up;
"We load the cargo on the 15th of April, so on 14 April is liberty at Down Port. No trouble places please. Bronz, Rin and Leilani, that means you."

LC again looks at his holoslate
"Okay on the 16th we full the ship and I need all the crew present, Tamm I need you to run a final diagnostic on the low berths with your team and Said-Ma final check on the cargo lock down and final checks on the High passage staterooms and replenishments."
LC looks at Said-Ma and Tamm to ensure there are no questions before wrapping up;
he has the 3d display project DAY Seven - 17 April: All Hands. Departure Protocol.
"Everyone onboard, boots polished, smiles ready. Port Captain and Customs will inspect—don’t give them reason to linger. Final passengers embark, Low Berths are prepped, and we get clearance to burn."

LC lowers the stylus and flicks off the display.

"Everyone gets one full Liberty day, maybe a few bonus hours if you finish early. Log it with me or Tamm. Keep the comms on, keep your heads down in the questionable bars, and please—for the love of Ram—don’t get arrested or married."

He straightens.

"Questions? Objections? Sarcastic remarks? No? Good. Let’s make credits, people. Dismissed."

The poll has a winner on the ship's name!!
On Day 2 (12 April 1116) LC gathers everyone;
"Well 'Fortune Son' was favored but Miss Fortune won over the majority of the crew, so our ship is no longer the Athelstone, long live the Athelstone!. She is known as Miss Fortune in paperwork and transponder."
May 14, 2025 3:40 am
Tharrok gives the board a good look over and nods. During the briefing, he notes that his name has been left out of the troublemakers list and smiles mischievously. He didn’t really notice his tail doing it’s own thing. It’s been a while since he spent a true ‘liberty’ at Fornice and even then, it was at the high port. He wasn’t so sure he could find anyplace really rowdy at the Down port. Finally, he decided he’d head to the Vargr sector over in Port-au-Prince and made a mental note to look up some good options for food and entertainment.
LC says:
…"Keep the comms on, keep your heads down in the questionable bars, and please—for the love of Ram—don’t get arrested or married."
"There goes all my fun…" T-Jive says, wryly. Then he adds, "I'll be ready Start of Day on the 15th.

As the briefing comes to a close and LC announces the ship’s name change, T-Jive says, "Well, I guess we should see about new ship’s jumpers or at least a good patch to put on our gear."

A little later, Tharrok catches LC during some downtime. "I know it’s a little Vargr-centric, but this was more or less what I had in my head…"

Tamm nods to acknowledge LC's instructions. He smirks and glances at Mama when LC mentions his dull attitude.
"Tamm not dull. Lots going on up here."
Tamm says while tapping on his temple.
"Tamm and Mama take liberty together? Who else want to see the exciting Tamm?"
Tamm's last sentence sounds like an open invitation for any of the crew to join him on liberty and, it is.
"Miss Fortune?" Shrug "Okay."
