Definitely having fun. The single player experience gets a bit lonely, but about the time it was starting to drag a boss showed up (and I also got pulled into another game). Also, the solo nature of it does mean that it keeps moving forward at a nice clip, so that's a bonus. I feel a genuine sense of progress on a nearly daily basis which is rare in a PbF game.

I'd like to see more cross-game interactions, as I think that's the real novelty here. I'm a bit worried that they will be limited by the amount of overlap in our paths, but I guess that depends on if the soapstone marks persist - or if only the most recent one we placed remains. If the first, then we'll find our paths 'cross' a lot more as we go on and start to cover territory others have already covered.. If the second, I worry cross-worlding will be rarer than I might like.

Leaving messages would be cool. Just like in Dark Souls, we should only have a limited list of phrases we could leave behind for others to see.

"Try Jumping" is all I need ;)

Because I let the paths branch so much at the start I decided to let all your soapstone a persist indefinitely.

I wasn't going to put in messages, as you guys can talk to each other when you get summoned. If you want I can find a way to get all of you messaging!

Candi, surely you also need; Dispair ahead, I did it, and here/illusory wall ahead.

Persistent soapstones means that, in the long run, my concerns will prove unfounded! Great news (this also means I can expect to run this same route twice more probably :P).

Pretty sure "Try Jumping" is the most important one though. "I did it" is nice to brag. But, of course, the VERY most important is probably "Praise the Sun" (just "Try Jumping" is a great troll move - as is "Despair Ahead" when there's literally nothing ahead :P).

...would be nice if someone would put down Mimic warnings for me...

I like the persistent soapstone idea. I have to admit, as combat in these games are not my favorite it was getting a little dull. But summoning a partner to dialogue with a bit and having a boss to face makes it feel all worthwhile.

I am impressed too, it feels exactly like playing a souls game. It doesn't really feel like DnD with a skin over it to me.

Though I miss the more RP stuff, I like having at least one game on the site that has a really steady pace, so it has its pros and cons.

It feel so much like a souls game, since I engaged my first boss, I've started trying to track down Dark Souls 1 for PS4 again (I have Dark Souls 2, and Bloodborne, but got into the series too late to find a used copy of DS1. Played it ages ago, but never finished it. This game is making me regret that!). So that's props right there :)

I do agree that the combat gets a bit dry, but I'm not sure what could be done. It's D&D after all (that's one reason I wanted to play a psion and built a "melee combat caster" - psionics at least gives me some options for things to try and keep it fresh; like flying ;) ).

I'm really glad your getting a strong souls feel, because I've really tried to build it to feel that way.

This is something new for me too. I tend not to like combat, particularly not on PbP. But I've been trying to use combat as the primary form of story telling (just like they do in the souls games). Though I've also tried to story tell with the scenery I've focused most of my effort is trying to build the encounters to tell you things, which of course means you'll get into fights a lot....

There's some fun environmental encounters coming up soon for some of you, which if you know your souls game should make you afraid...

That boss didn't stand a chance, yay teamwork!

I'm not sure if you actually needed me! :) You had that pretty well handled.

Man, Sorry Candi. I am about as useless as a corpse right now.

Rawlyns got a lot of

Ahead of him before he can play dark souls...

Heh, well, it's your thread so don't apologize to me!

It could be the fates punishing me, as I beat this guy with a brutal crit off the break.

No freaking kidding. Rawlyn is not cut out for this merciless hellscape it seems. He would be a red smear on the ground had I fought this thing myself.

Hey all, sorry about the silence; I joined an AD&D 2e game two days ago and have spent the rest of the time between then and now learning the system; surprisingly harder work then I was expecting. I'll get posts up soon...

Enjoy your THAC0!
Feb 22, 2017 11:42 am
THAC0 was one of the easier parts of the system, and I actually have a degree in mathematics so I should be fine...

Damn.

The real struggle was the shear difficulty of extracting information out of the hand book, it's so poorly formated. But know that I've gone through the book I should be fine.

My last math class was 7 years ago, maybe that's why I don't like the crunchier games!
Feb 22, 2017 11:48 am
I don't think that necessarily correlates, as I greatly prefer lighter systems over crunchier ones. The reason I got into this game is cause I have never played anything older then 3 edition, and I felt like I really should play some of the older games to understand the history of the game/ general sentimental reasons.
