Darksouls rules variant

Rich Howards Adaptable Humans (Just in case we go with the humans only)
Nov 4, 2016 2:05 pm
Darksoul rules seem legit, can't wait to see how everything plays out. I'm excited to play!

Welcome snow and candi. If the other original applicants contact me they can join too but I think 6 is my limit.
Nov 7, 2016 11:42 am
Awesome! Happy to be a part of your experiment :)

A quick note about items, xp and wealth...

The first thing is items, you can examine an item at any time with an arcane, history or religion check to determine its properties and a snippet of its story. If you examine an item while resting at a bonfire you succeed automatically.

I will be handling wealth and xp in the same way as the source material does. When you kill enemies you will automatically collect their soul. The soul will have an xp value equal to twice the value you would normally be awarded for killing the foe. Why twice you may ask? Well these soul items are also "worth" an amount of gold equal to the amount of co it grants you. (Conveniently it seems that expected wealth per character level is ~ proportional to xp). So when you collect souls you will need to choose between consuming then to level, and keeping them to trade.

Good to know, was wondering how my character was gonna figure out everything.

Quick questions/comment about the Souls rules --

-- hollowing reduces your maximum hit points, can these be restored in ways other than consuming humanity? (there are abilities that allow you to restore your max hit points).

-- since Estus and Bonfire healing replace hit die, what happens to class powers that interact with hit dice? I'm thinking of the Fighter's Second Wind, as an example.

-- lethality is thematic, but I'm concerned it might create a thoroughly grindy experience. In Dark Souls you have reaction timing and reading enemies as advantages to overcome punishing lethality, but in D&D you have dice rolls and... dice rolls. Without some way to get the edge on foes you are repeatedly throwing your face into, your lowering hit points and their increased damage all but guarantee you'll become mathematically unable to defeat them.

Love the XP / Gold idea.

Are you allowing Unearthed Arcana? I'm considering psion (I'd also be happy to work through a retheme of the mechanics if it's too far off the source material in theme).
Nov 7, 2016 12:47 pm
1) effects that restore your max hit points (though I can't think of any of the top of my head) can be considered as spells that restore your humanity.

2) I didn't think there were class powers that did that. Second wind for example (at least in the srd which is what I have on hand at the moment) reads:

You have a limited well of stamina that you can draw on to protect yourself from harm. On your turn, you can use a bonus action to regain hit points equal to 1d10 + your fighter level. Once you use this feature, you must finish a short or long rest before you can use it again.

But if there is one we can just have the powers key of Estus use.

3) I'm not using the added lethality suggested in the variant rules. I think a single PC will make things hard enough as it is. The encounters will be balance against 1 PC (at least I'll build them using the table), so it shouldn't be too Grundy. I'll be reasonably liberal with bonfires as well, placing them approximately on curve in terms of encounters per long rest.
Nov 7, 2016 12:49 pm
Go got it. Psionics doesn't seem too far out of the ethos...

Amazing, you're my favourite GM :) (I'm going the Immortal route, FYI, so no need to stress about the psionic investigation power -- which would cut a bit against your cool lore rules).
Nov 7, 2016 1:41 pm
1) Cool. Those effects are pretty high level anyway, but I was curious.

2) Well, shows I never play fighters. I know one power that does (psionis get a power that "spends 2 hit dice" - this could restore an estus flask instead -- we can negotiate if I pick it, but I probably will)

3) Awesome!
Nov 7, 2016 2:41 pm
Upon re-reading I realized you didn't actually give the go ahead -- here are the Unearthed Arcana releases I was thinking of using:

Class Details: http://media.wizards.com/2016/downloads/Psionics_and_Mystic_V2.pdf
Feat Details: https://media.wizards.com/2016/downloads/DND/UA-Feats-V1.pdf

The specific feat is spear mastery (Variant Human for the feat). If those look acceptable, I can submit the character later today.

The go for it was for the UA stuff. In a game when I'm allowing homebrew I'm almost definitely going to allow the homebrew that wizards did. As for the psionic investigation power (as well as legend lore) these would still operate as written, it's just your gonna be getting a lot of fancy named things and I needed establish a fun way for the actual information to disseminate.
Nov 7, 2016 7:41 pm
In that case, character submitted!

If you want me to break down the level progression in the notes I can.

All that's left for me to do is fill out the descriptions of powers on the sheet.
Nov 7, 2016 11:07 pm
Damn, just realized I should've named my character like everyone else in the Souls series: "Name of Place" or "Adjective Name".
Nov 7, 2016 11:15 pm
You can edit the character name to fit that format.
Nov 7, 2016 11:17 pm
Yep, already did it! :P
Nov 9, 2016 2:35 am
Hey guys, I know I've been MIA. I'll get it all setup tomorrow or thursday. Likely tomorrow later. I have had three tests in the last week and the last one is tomorrow morning. Sorry for the late start.
Nov 9, 2016 2:41 am
Well, on the bright side you'll get to learn from our mistakes!
Nov 9, 2016 3:29 am
Thanks for accepting me! I'm working up my character now.
Nov 9, 2016 3:38 am
Just to make sure, are we doing standard point-buy and officially using the adaptable humans?
Nov 9, 2016 4:01 am

Once I realized we really are following the same path, I stop reading your thread :)
Nov 9, 2016 4:01 am
We have ended up with adaptable or variant humans. I prefer point but but if you want rolled you can do some 4d6D1 here.
Nov 9, 2016 4:03 am
Hopefully after we hit the branching points people will start having different stories, but the idea as everyone was exploring the same game space. I don't mind if you read each other's threads, but I will silently judge you for it...

Don't sweat it. It isn't required that you all are doing this at the same time. Also in theory it's making me better as I've just submitted an honours thesis and am in the process of sitting an exam as I write this! (It's a three day take home which looks quite reasonable so I'm not flipping out and going offline.)
Nov 9, 2016 7:23 am
What would you like us to do with extra Languages from backgrounds and the like? :) Almost done with the character!
Nov 9, 2016 7:28 am
Languages aren't really going to come into play...
Nov 9, 2016 10:08 am
Right, I thought not. So if a background gave one or two to us, would you mind us replacing them with a tool proficiency?
Nov 9, 2016 10:12 am
Definitely do!
Nov 9, 2016 10:35 am
Thanks!
Nov 9, 2016 10:06 pm
Honestly I kinda like the sound of the lethality, but I am more a veteran of the video games then I am of DnD. I will follow with whatever choice you all made earlier.
Nov 9, 2016 10:11 pm
It's not that I'm not a fan of a high lethality game. It's just that on a PbP having to grind through combats over and over again isn't going to be enjoyable...
Nov 9, 2016 11:57 pm
Truth. So I am working on my dude now. From what I understand we can use anything from the PhB as far as classes? I'll be doing the variant human you posted. Any restrictions? Like I can use the underdark one despite that not being in the game?
Nov 10, 2016 1:04 am
Who said there isn't an underdark? There is so much stuff underground in the setting...

Any WotC published class + UA permitted.
Nov 10, 2016 1:09 am
Cool thanks! I'll be ready to go by the end of the night. Do we need a backstory or is it cool if we fit more with the dark souls theme of not having much of a past we remember?
Nov 10, 2016 1:11 am
Should be my last question, but are we going to be able to use spells like Cure Wounds?

Cure Wounds states: "This spell has no effect on undead or constructs," and since we're all Undead, I thought that I should ask.
Nov 10, 2016 2:48 am
In this case I defer to the source material. We can see undead using Devine magic to heal, so you can heal yourselves with divine magic (ie cure wounds).
Nov 10, 2016 3:28 am
It didn't specify in the book, If I am multi-classing straight from the get-go, Is my equipment coming from the starting class or can I pick between the two?

Or in this game do we start with nothing, as in Dark Souls?
Nov 10, 2016 4:04 am
You can choose some mixture, within reason.
Nov 10, 2016 5:20 am
Alrighty, I'm submitting. LEt me know if anything needs to be clarified or altered!
Nov 10, 2016 5:57 am
I submitted earlier, as well. :)
Nov 11, 2016 4:05 pm
Is there anything else you need from me, Genisisect?

In the end a little bit of flipping out and going offline happened. I'll read through the characters and get you two going today...
Nov 11, 2016 9:36 pm
Haha, alright! Hope the exam went well.
Nov 15, 2016 7:20 am
I'm sorry about the absence over the last few days, but thesis stuff got in the way. I am now an academically free man, so there shouldn't be similar extended periods of silence on my behalf.

Genisisect says:

Well, I'm having lots of fun so far, so that's certainly good news for me. How'd it all go?
Nov 15, 2016 7:42 am
I wasn't really happy with the thesis itself, so much left unstated due to lack of time, and while preparing for my defence I found several typos and grammatical errors but such is life.

My defence was much better, I answered all the questions correctly and confidently...
Nov 15, 2016 7:44 am
Sounds like it went as well as it could with the time you had, then. What are you writing the thesis for?
Nov 15, 2016 8:10 am
It was an Honours thesis to complete my bachelor of science (honours) in theoretical physics.

Preemptively, the title was "Causal Disorder from Open Quantum Dynamics with Postselection."
Nov 15, 2016 8:20 am
I've taken physics 2, so that goes over my head about as much as you'd expect.

It goes over most peoples heads. The pop-science version is "Quantum Time-travel"

Well, my day was busy as hell. Nice to come home write a post! Now my character can suffer, just like I did at work. :P
Nov 24, 2016 2:36 pm
Happy Thanksgiving everyone! Hopefully you guys aren't gettin carved up by those hollows.
Nov 24, 2016 5:35 pm
I have been way too lucky, actually, and I know that means it's about to come around and bite me.
Nov 24, 2016 6:26 pm
I am getting annihilated. Happy thanksgiving anyway though you guys.

Tell me about it, it's like the real Dark Souls experience.
Nov 25, 2016 1:18 am
Hopefully it's not too grindy...
Nov 25, 2016 1:49 am
I'm enjoying it a lot so far. I do look forward to meeting other PCs, though.
Nov 25, 2016 4:35 am
I'm having a good time as well. I will do well to survey areas and utilize stealth better in the future though.
Nov 30, 2016 1:31 am
Turns out i have neglected to add my prof bonus to my attacks this whole time. Bother.
Nov 30, 2016 2:39 am
Whelp, I'm sure going forward you will remember!
Dec 9, 2016 4:54 pm
Just want to say I'm having a lot of fun with the solo side of this. Really does feel souls-y in tone and exploration. Curious to see how cross-worlding will work.
Dec 9, 2016 11:00 pm
I think Handle and I just found out!
Dec 9, 2016 11:33 pm
It was never suppose to be a secret how the multiplayer aspect would work considering that when I first proposed the game I outlined the mechanic...
Quote:
Darksouls is a mostly single player experience, but you can summon others into your game to help you out when your struggling. This is the idea Id like to try. 3-4 PC playing through the same adventure in solo threads. But they will be able to summon each other into their games.
I even gave you the actual item from the game that lets you do this...
Dec 10, 2016 12:04 am
Right, but seeing how that would exactly translate into PbP wasn't certain as far as the specific details.
Dec 10, 2016 12:32 am
Oh yes I know, I mean how it'll actually play out once it starts happening (not the mechanics of it, but the feels).
Dec 10, 2016 12:56 am
Ah ok, well I'm sure you'll find out sooner or latter..
Dec 10, 2016 4:17 am
I know I could use help. Estus is low and the bastards are so hard to kill!
I am enjoying the solo side as well. Its grindy, but that's part of souls too. It's also helping me learn 5e as I consider my options and iron out mistakes.
Dec 10, 2016 3:02 pm
I gather I need to draw a sign with the soap stone to be summoned from a place. Hrm, better start drawing then eh ? (I for some reason had the belief that it was other players calling for help that brought you in, not you volunteering from particular points) :P
Dec 10, 2016 6:31 pm
I drew my first sign in an obscure location, I feel, so I went ahead and drew a second one. If I remember right, anywho. And yeah, I got those mixed up too, Candi. :P
Dec 11, 2016 9:30 am
Quick question, if I'm allowed to know:

So I have these souls from killing things, right? Are they like "soul of..." items in Dark Souls where they don't go away upon death, or are these the souls that vanish if I die? Can we recover them if we get back to the point we died at? If I use them for experience, and then I die, do I lose a portion of them, or are those "saved"? If this was answered somewhere else and I just missed it, I'm sorry :P I just already know I want to use the souls for exp and I'm trying to see if it's better that I keep them in their current form or go ahead and use them for exp.
Dec 11, 2016 9:52 am
So the soul items you have are currently occupying the dual roll of "soul of..." items that don't go away on death and the souls that vanish if you die. Though I haven't said it any where I might as well reveal my intentions, as it may effect the way you play. When you convert souls to XP that is fix, you don't loose it on death, but you also cannot trade with it. When you die, you drop half the souls in your inventory, (where half the souls needs to approximate half the XP value of your inventory as well.) But you will never loose unique souls (anything that drops from a non-respawning enemy), and in general I will be doing half rounds down.

If you can return to the point you last died, you recover any souls you dropped, but as in the original, this only is true for the last time you died, any souls you had dropped 'despawn' if you die before you get there.
Dec 11, 2016 10:37 am
Got it! Thank you! Do we have to be at a bonfire to use "Soul of..." souls, or can we use them anywhere?
Dec 11, 2016 10:41 am
At first I was going to say just consume it, but as that would allow you to level away from a bonfire... You use them by offering the souls to a bonfire (similar to the way you use humanity).
Dec 11, 2016 10:46 am
Sounds good! Thanks!
Dec 12, 2016 12:18 pm
Sorry guys I've been busy the past few days, a couple of concerts and a funeral. I'll post responses tomorrow morning (~9 hours from now...)

Jan 10, 2017 7:28 pm

Jan 10, 2017 9:30 pm
Makin my way downtown
Jan 11, 2017 10:28 pm
Going well. I managed to successfully call for help.
Jan 11, 2017 10:53 pm
And I managed to figure out how to be available for help :)
Jan 12, 2017 7:10 am
I've put my sign around in like.. 3 spots, and I know it only goes for the most recent one, so I'm probably just teasingly keeping it out of someone's reach.
Jan 12, 2017 12:40 pm
That's all assuming we're even in the same place. There was a forking path almost immediately - and I've gone to the castle. I'm sure someone went another way.
Jan 12, 2017 4:21 pm
Yeah I can't believe someone went the same way as me. I sort of picked one at random.
Jan 12, 2017 4:49 pm
Castles are cool (that was my logic).
Jan 29, 2017 1:40 am
I have a job interview for a dream position at CMU doing research on teaching (I fly out in 11 hours), so I probably won't post until I've gotten back and decompressed (Wed/Thurs).

Np. Your thread can just idle while your away. The only issue is with Nicolini's thread, but I'll leave it up to him if his thread idles or if you get desummoned.

Its fine for me to wait. I have a ton of school on my plate anyway so a few days wont phase me much.

If there's a combat hang up and you are just waiting on me, I attack! -- 1d20+9; 1d8+5 :)
Feb 13, 2017 7:57 am
How much are Legrion Tortoise Knight Souls and Legrion Lancer Soul's worth?
Feb 13, 2017 8:08 am
Haven't met with either! I need oooonnnne more soul of something to level up, and of course the next thing I fight looks scary as hell.

On top of that the dice have only just now decided to crap out on me :)
Feb 13, 2017 8:34 am
Don't worry man I believe in you.

Worse come to worse, you should summon Alara. She can effing fly.
Feb 13, 2017 8:37 am
I would, if I found the sign. I have a feeling I'm off on my own somewhere.

I had Tosti for a while. He carried me through several fights while I tried to look tough.
Feb 13, 2017 9:26 am
You'll have to examine them to know, you'll need to be at the bonfire to consume them anyway. I should be posting the next story thread too.
Feb 13, 2017 10:49 am
We're definitely in the same neck of the woods, we'll cross paths again. Probably.
Feb 13, 2017 11:11 am
Also Momo it doesn't just look scary, it is in fact a boss...
Feb 13, 2017 11:18 am
Crud.. :(
Feb 13, 2017 11:23 am
First of all I think this might be a good time to have a check in, hows this game treating everyone. Any suggestions/ complaints?

Also I'm curious to see if anyone has figured out what monsters I've re-skinned to make the enemies you've face.
Feb 13, 2017 11:26 am
The typical hollow are using the zombie "undead fortitude" ability, or whatever it's called. Hate that thing.

I'm having plenty of fun, though. Grouping up with Tosti was definitely the highlight of the game for me so far, so I'm hoping to fall back in line with the others so that I can see more soapstone signs, and have my own be seen. :) However, even the solo play has been pretty fantastic. I think Harmia's about due to finally die, though, especially with how I've been rolling lately.
Feb 13, 2017 6:00 pm
Definitely having fun. The single player experience gets a bit lonely, but about the time it was starting to drag a boss showed up (and I also got pulled into another game). Also, the solo nature of it does mean that it keeps moving forward at a nice clip, so that's a bonus. I feel a genuine sense of progress on a nearly daily basis which is rare in a PbF game.

I'd like to see more cross-game interactions, as I think that's the real novelty here. I'm a bit worried that they will be limited by the amount of overlap in our paths, but I guess that depends on if the soapstone marks persist - or if only the most recent one we placed remains. If the first, then we'll find our paths 'cross' a lot more as we go on and start to cover territory others have already covered.. If the second, I worry cross-worlding will be rarer than I might like.
Feb 13, 2017 8:40 pm
Leaving messages would be cool. Just like in Dark Souls, we should only have a limited list of phrases we could leave behind for others to see.
Feb 13, 2017 8:46 pm
"Try Jumping" is all I need ;)
Feb 13, 2017 9:04 pm
Because I let the paths branch so much at the start I decided to let all your soapstone a persist indefinitely.

I wasn't going to put in messages, as you guys can talk to each other when you get summoned. If you want I can find a way to get all of you messaging!

Candi, surely you also need; Dispair ahead, I did it, and here/illusory wall ahead.
Feb 13, 2017 9:54 pm
Persistent soapstones means that, in the long run, my concerns will prove unfounded! Great news (this also means I can expect to run this same route twice more probably :P).

Pretty sure "Try Jumping" is the most important one though. "I did it" is nice to brag. But, of course, the VERY most important is probably "Praise the Sun" (just "Try Jumping" is a great troll move - as is "Despair Ahead" when there's literally nothing ahead :P).
Feb 13, 2017 10:22 pm
...would be nice if someone would put down Mimic warnings for me...
Feb 13, 2017 11:51 pm
I like the persistent soapstone idea. I have to admit, as combat in these games are not my favorite it was getting a little dull. But summoning a partner to dialogue with a bit and having a boss to face makes it feel all worthwhile.

I am impressed too, it feels exactly like playing a souls game. It doesn't really feel like DnD with a skin over it to me.

Though I miss the more RP stuff, I like having at least one game on the site that has a really steady pace, so it has its pros and cons.
Feb 14, 2017 1:17 am
It feel so much like a souls game, since I engaged my first boss, I've started trying to track down Dark Souls 1 for PS4 again (I have Dark Souls 2, and Bloodborne, but got into the series too late to find a used copy of DS1. Played it ages ago, but never finished it. This game is making me regret that!). So that's props right there :)

I do agree that the combat gets a bit dry, but I'm not sure what could be done. It's D&D after all (that's one reason I wanted to play a psion and built a "melee combat caster" - psionics at least gives me some options for things to try and keep it fresh; like flying ;) ).
Feb 14, 2017 1:52 am
I'm really glad your getting a strong souls feel, because I've really tried to build it to feel that way.

This is something new for me too. I tend not to like combat, particularly not on PbP. But I've been trying to use combat as the primary form of story telling (just like they do in the souls games). Though I've also tried to story tell with the scenery I've focused most of my effort is trying to build the encounters to tell you things, which of course means you'll get into fights a lot....

There's some fun environmental encounters coming up soon for some of you, which if you know your souls game should make you afraid...
Feb 18, 2017 4:31 am
That boss didn't stand a chance, yay teamwork!
Feb 18, 2017 9:59 am
I'm not sure if you actually needed me! :) You had that pretty well handled.
Feb 20, 2017 6:52 am
Man, Sorry Candi. I am about as useless as a corpse right now.

Heh, well, it's your thread so don't apologize to me!

It could be the fates punishing me, as I beat this guy with a brutal crit off the break.
Feb 20, 2017 7:22 pm
No freaking kidding. Rawlyn is not cut out for this merciless hellscape it seems. He would be a red smear on the ground had I fought this thing myself.
Feb 22, 2017 10:25 am
Hey all, sorry about the silence; I joined an AD&D 2e game two days ago and have spent the rest of the time between then and now learning the system; surprisingly harder work then I was expecting. I'll get posts up soon...
Feb 22, 2017 11:16 am
Enjoy your THAC0!
Feb 22, 2017 11:42 am
THAC0 was one of the easier parts of the system, and I actually have a degree in mathematics so I should be fine...

http://s2.quickmeme.com/img/65/65da14b766dbe5764467041dc85f2d6a25f235bd14a46f59b2b5bf30aee9b96e.jpg

Damn.

The real struggle was the shear difficulty of extracting information out of the hand book, it's so poorly formated. But know that I've gone through the book I should be fine.
Feb 22, 2017 11:44 am
My last math class was 7 years ago, maybe that's why I don't like the crunchier games!

I don't think that necessarily correlates, as I greatly prefer lighter systems over crunchier ones. The reason I got into this game is cause I have never played anything older then 3 edition, and I felt like I really should play some of the older games to understand the history of the game/ general sentimental reasons.
Feb 22, 2017 11:54 am
Yeah, it's good to play a variety a games. I like to borrow ideas from different systems. Sometimes when I want to make up some magic item in DnD, I'll steal some cyberpunk item from Shadowrun and just call it magic.
Feb 22, 2017 12:33 pm
My first D&D game was AD&D, but it was so long ago that I hardly remember it. I only really got into it around 3e and 3.5.
Feb 22, 2017 7:51 pm
Honestly this site was my first contact with DnD at all, save for a chat formatted game my friend made for a little while. I've only ever played homebrews. Didn't even know about real tabletop RPG's at all until like a year or so ago.
Feb 27, 2017 6:05 pm
Whelp, Rawlyn survived in the end ;) -- back to the lonely existence. Better draw more floor graffiti eh?
Feb 27, 2017 7:50 pm
Yeah I suppose so. Now that I know that they don't cancel out the one previously I am gonna leave one everywhere
Mar 2, 2017 12:30 pm
Just make a signature for every post where you put "...and I mark a white sign on the floor" at the end.
Mar 2, 2017 1:24 pm
In a room with a big fight, another player walks in and sees the floor is covered in hundreds of glowing white signs.

The character I built is based on Mystic v2, and a few weeks ago the latest version was posted. It's a big change, and my current build is impossible by the new rules. I'm ok with re-speccing (at the next bonfire stop, or death as may happen momentarily) - or keeping on as is with my high-flying spear-wielding, probably-OP-because-its-gone paladin-smite-style-damage ability.
Mar 27, 2017 7:04 am
Hmm does v2 have an early level cap? If so we should definitely switch to the new one. Otherwise feel free to keep or switch as you please.

Also sorry about not posting. I've suffered a corruption of my notes, and I'm trying to rewrite them before continuing, but I've been really short on time lately...
Mar 27, 2017 12:42 pm
v2 caps at 10, which is pretty far off I think.

I'll have a look at the new one more closely and see what would become of Alara under it (I do like the conceptual idea of a Soul Knife, as that's kind of what I wanted the Immortal in v2 to be and what I built towards... nothing quite as cool as a psionic wolverine!)

I might be intermittent for a little while but I at least have rebuilt my notes!
Apr 6, 2017 4:49 pm
Sweet! I'm inclined to rebuild as the Soul Knife (both b/c I think, while I've abused it, the paladin-smite damage thing is more OP on Mysti v2 than even the Paladin; and b/c the Soul Knife looks so rad. I can do it while also maintaining many of Alara's tricks - like flying - while also freeing up the dependance on the spear so I can maybe take advantage of some of the alternative weapons you've got cooked up. As right now, by her build, it's Spear or not at all).

I've just been putting it off until you "reappeared"

Hey all. First of all sorry for the patchy posting, my schedule should be back to mostly daily now.

Second of all some observations; I believe most of you have experienced atleast the primary multiplayer aspect of the souls series; jumping into other people's games. But now some of you have encountered others; the first are covenants. Tosti and Alara have both (perhaps unwittingly) joined a covenant. I decided not to use a multiplayer aspect to these instead focusing on granting unique benefits in exchange for barter. The other has been met by Alara in terms of be Raided! I decided I wanted to leave raiding as something I use DMPCs for, but let me know if you would like to raid each other (I'm reluctant to do so though as I think DnD is primarily designed for collaboration not conflict).

Another thing that's come up recently is many of you have encountered my implementation of the 4e skill challenge into 5e. How did you feel that went (for those who finished it) or is going?
Apr 27, 2017 11:37 am
Alara joined a covenant?! Neat. The raid was interesting, probably the most intense moment I have had so far (in which I genuinely thought I was going to die!)
Apr 27, 2017 12:00 pm
Actually I got that wrong... Harmia joined a covenant not Alara...

You almost did die in fact, was down to a single dice roll!
Apr 27, 2017 12:08 pm
I was going to say, it really was unwitting if Alara did it (I wouldn't complain mind you).

Also, Alara rebuild is here still need to write out the talent descriptions. The new Mystic Immortal is a huge tank, which would be really grindy in this setting so I made her a Soul Knife (and retained some of her trademarks as best as I could -- flying in particular). No spears, now just psionic wolverine blades.
Apr 27, 2017 12:22 pm
You'll need to put it on the arrive or swap out who you have submitted as I cannot see the character ATM. Though I'm willing to believe the build is fine!
Apr 27, 2017 1:28 pm
It's on the archive now, but I'll also push through the swap and carry on the adventure.
Apr 29, 2017 11:44 pm
Genisisect says:
Harmia joined a covenant not Alara...
Oh gosh, is that what that was? Haha, woops!
May 11, 2017 11:49 pm
Hey yall. I am a bit swamped, and am having a hard time finding motivation for this game in particular. Unfortunately I think I am going to dip out. Thanks for everything, it was a fun concept and thank you Genis for executing it well. The game really does feel like dark souls. I hope you all defeat the darkness.
May 12, 2017 3:38 am
Sorry to see you go Nic. It's been great having you!

I'll make sure to do something with Rawlyn!
May 16, 2017 12:18 am
Hey! Thanks for inviting me to your game, it sounds exciting. Any important details I should know before creating a character (besides those listed on the first page of this ooc thread)? Eight pages of ooc chatter seems insurmountable to me haha.
May 16, 2017 12:32 am
Page one has all the details for character generation. There is some other detail scattered around the place but I'm going to gather those details from around the place into their own thread.
May 16, 2017 12:36 am
Cool, thank you. It will probably take me a couple of days to make my character, but I'll try to be quick about it.
May 16, 2017 2:32 pm
Welcome to suffer-fest... erm, Genisisect's amazing Dark Souls D&D experience :)
May 18, 2017 9:20 am
Welcome, it'll be cool to see what sort of character you come up with. I've put my sign down in a lot of areas, so we'll meet up eventually.
May 19, 2017 10:53 pm
Your character has been approved snowy, just make sure you record what your prepared spells are somewhere...
May 21, 2017 12:19 am
Alright, I've submitted my character. Let me know what you think. I did have one question though. Are we using the Lordran pantheon, or a custom one? I was curious about what the source of my spellpower was.
May 21, 2017 2:29 am
The pantheon is technically the same as Lordran, but with a greater focus on the worship of 'saints' who are Herod of the dragon war.
May 21, 2017 10:51 pm
Cool I'll just play it by ear anyway.
May 31, 2017 12:56 am
Sorry about the lack of posting this last week, but I had so much marking to get done and not enough time to do it. I'm done teaching for the semester so I'll be able to maintain a high post rate for a while...
Jun 30, 2017 3:02 pm
Welcome aboard Jabes and Unknown! Start thinking about your characters but don't rush I'm still going to be a bit irregular for a few days.

I'd also like to apologise to Toasty and snowy it's been a while since I posted in your threads. I've had some scheduling problems which had been sapping my energy. I have the last concert for a little while tomorrow (well today now) and my teaching commitments are relaxed so soon it will just be me battling the demons of focus and I should win that fight...
Jun 30, 2017 3:12 pm
I've already asked Jabes this, but I was curious Unknown, how much Dark Souls experience do you have. This game doesn't require any lire knowledge heading in, but a familiarity with some of the tropes may help, also having a certain expectation as to how the story and fun will be delivered might be good...

I've never played the videogame so I have zero knowledge of Dark Souls. Well, close to zero. Last year someone ran a Dark Souls themed game via Google+ using PbtA rules. Beyond that I know nothing. :-)

I've always found this image very compelling. Maybe this is how my character died. Do the PC's have any knowledge of their past? Would a paladin fit into the narrative given that we're undead and all?

Jul 1, 2017 10:55 pm
Paladins fit, considering as it's essentially one of the archytypes in the game. You can decide how much your character remembers from their past but there should be so loss and imperfection.
Jul 2, 2017 11:27 pm
I have absolutely no knowledge but I did just get Dark Souls 2 which I hope I can find time to play.
Jul 3, 2017 5:03 am
Ok I've compiled as set of notes of the useful stuff buried in the OOC Chatter. Feel free to ask questions if you need help.

Do paladin spells and channel divinity work normally in this world? Even Find Steed? Or does that go against the setting? I am fine with any restrictions.
Jul 27, 2017 2:05 am
Paladin spells work fine, divine spell casting works based on how faithful you are. Unlike normal DnD there may or may not be a divine being answering your prayers, the very nature of reality is just simply bent by the power of faith. In fact the 'gods' of the region we are playing in are actually dead mortals, who's deeds of faith were so tremendous that they are presented as exemplars.
Jul 30, 2017 7:35 pm
I made an Oathbreaker Paladin. Anxious to get him started. The drawback I'm seeing is if he gets summoned he might attack the other PC after foes are cleared. He's Lawful though, and so will honor an agreement. I haven't read anyone else's thread (and don't intend to) so I don't know how summoning works.
Jul 30, 2017 9:30 pm
I've changed how your multiplayer mechanic will work Jabes to coincide with what you are intending to do with it. Let's just say you'll know what to do with them when the time comes.

So I've FINALLY posted. I usually don't use the first voice in PbP, and generally dislike when someone does (to each his own though), but for this particular game is seemed fitting. :-)

Hey there I think I'm all set to get started.
Jan 1, 2018 12:34 pm
Hello all. I am glad to be a part of this game. This is my first PbP game so bear with me lol.
Jan 2, 2018 2:07 am
Right I should be back from the period of intermittent posting. Welcome Apothix! I've started up your game thread, please peruse the general information at your first convenience.
Apr 9, 2018 11:07 am
Hi! It's been a while. Is nobody else playing anymore? I'd really like to continue if possible. :-)
Apr 9, 2018 12:17 pm
Sadly it is just you and me, I’m up for continuing but when it’s just the two of us I’ll be quite prone to dropping the ball...
Apr 9, 2018 5:37 pm
It's fine if you won't mind me reminding you every now and then. ;-) I don't mind the slow pace either.
Jun 13, 2018 9:47 am
Ok I’ve respawned at the bonfire after being dead for some time.

Also welcome Krogher, have you familiarised yourself with the wierd rules that we are running with. Let me know if you need help building a character.
Jun 24, 2018 7:49 am
Welcome, Krogher!
Jul 8, 2018 7:38 pm
Hey all. Had my own period of real life for a while there but I'm back and chomping at the bit. I think the rules seem straightforward enough. I'm sure I'll need a little help here and there but I'm excited.
