Hello Gamers Plane!

My name is Dante--on this site at least.

I have played RPGs quite a bit in the past. Mainly around the kitchen table with my brothers with a very beat up copy of D&D 2nd Edition. Then I played for a while with 3rd Edition, then again with 4th Edition, and during the pandemic I picked up playing 5th Edition. After about two years of playing 5E I became very disillusioned. I don't like how long and complicated the game is, I just wanted to get back to the feeling I had at those sessions around the kitchen table with my brothers. We were just making up stuff and throwing some dice. Rules were simple, combat was fast, and characters died. But we were having so much fun that we didn't really care. I thought I might not ever play an RPG again.

Then, I discovered Shadowdark! Now I'm back and loving it. I have an in person group and we have played Shadowdark a few times. I seem to be the forever GM so I rarely get to play characters. I saw a video about adding a hybrid component to your RPG and then I started researching play by post.

I am mainly interested in Shadowdark, Tales from the Loop (though I have never played it), and Mork Borg (though, once again, I have never played it).

Good to be here.

Welcome, Dante! The GP community is a great place for forever GMs to get their feet wet as players, and to try new systems!

I *might* be brewing up a Shadowdark game soon...

Welcome! I find it refreshing that another gamer can rejoice in the tragedy of losing a character. The newer editions can numb a player to character loss by making it too hard to lose a character, and cheapen the experience of stories that come from that saga of tragedy when a heroic character or a set of characters are killed, even when it seems like they might be off doing something somewhat mundane sometimes. We get the themes in great literature and other media this way.

I agree that the newer editions require a lot of tweak jobs to handle right, otherwise they don't feel right, though I don't necessarily throw them out. I've played Shadowdark and Tales From the Loop, and found them enjoyable; Mork Borg looks interesting, too.

The best stories are the ones where we get intensely connected to a character and then have to deal with the loss of that character. Those are the stories that I remember years afterward. I agree. That is how I want to RPG.

Welcome! I hear you about 5e sometimes grinding things down, especially if we've been through so many editions. Lots of lighter systems out there that still capture the feel! Mork Borg fan here, I've run some!
