Character Generation

Nov 28, 2016 6:56 pm
Random Creation:

Please put up a post with the following rolls in one batch (13 total rolls, sorry all!). Once you have it posted, I will reply with what the magical randomizer has produced for your character. Then we will work on fleshing out your personality and such based on those milestones.

In developing your characters stories, come up with a fitting reason why you are in Luskan, the City of Sails in the far north of Faerun.

Race
Roll 1d12+1d10. D12 will choose your race, D10 will choose your variant.

Class
Roll 1d12. This will choose your class. Normal creation customization options like patrons etc are your choice.

Background
Roll 1d25 for background choice.
Roll 1d20 for background feature (things like military rank, noble title, sage focus area, etc).
Roll 2d8 for Personality Traits
Roll 3d6 for Ideal/Bond/Flaw

Stats
Roll for your stats. We’ll leave it up to lady luck to determine this all. You may choose 2d6+6, 3d6, or 4d6 drop lowest. Use the same method for all stats. Order is STR, DEX, CON, INT, WIS, CHA.

Please include a roll of 6d6 at the very end. You can use this as a re-roll pool to replace 1 die per stat as you see fit.

"Mystery Shopper"
Please roll 3d100 with a Mystery Shopper label.

I assume you have tables for this? I wanna make sure and ask before I begin plugging in information. The only thing I'm relatively certain of is that I got Rogue with an 18 Dex (Sweet!)
Nov 28, 2016 7:13 pm
Hah, yes I do have some tables drawn up. After we see how this works out, I'm more than happy to share what I have.

Quote:
Please include a roll of 6d6 at the very end. You can use this as a re-roll pool to replace 1 die per stat as you see fit.
Question- how do you want us to use this reroll pool? For instance, should the rolls be in order of stat and are we allowed to replace one die in each stat, or just one? (Want to make sure I'm reading it right.)
Nov 28, 2016 7:17 pm
You have those 6 numbers. You can use each one once, and you can use it to swap out up to one dice per stat any way you choose. So the first number doesn't have to replace a die in STR, it can go in any of the 6.
Nov 28, 2016 7:34 pm
Great! All things considered, my numbers seem pretty good!

I have to say, I'm impressed with how most of the stat rolls have ended up being OK for what your class ended up being.

Also, since I didn't mention it, the stats that I'm putting up are only your base stats, your racial modifiers have not yet been included. Feel free to do that as you set up your own person.
Nov 28, 2016 8:21 pm
Additionally, I've added threads for each of you to manage any personality work you want to do, things like that.
Nov 28, 2016 8:23 pm

I'll start making the character sheet right away

Nov 28, 2016 8:57 pm
It's going to be interesting to see how exactly we're going to work (or want to work) together. It'll be like herding cats- we'll be too busy bickering and being offended, we'll be eaten by the first owlbear we come across.
Nov 28, 2016 8:59 pm
:D That's the next thing that I'm working on while you all start your fleshing out phase. Why are you all together. I toyed with the idea of poofy magic happening and voila there you all are. I thought about letting it try to play out naturally. I'm thinking it may be borrowing something from a Pathfinder module that has a person you've all met in the past naming you in a will and you've come for that. Possibly something else. Not quiiiiiiiite sure yet.

It makes for some interesting gaming choices.

And hopefully the Mystery Shopper mechanic will provide a little bit of balm where RNG burns. :)

Are we meant to participate in each others' character background/development threads? If yes, cool. If not, may I suggest making it so each player sees only his/her own thread? It's no biggie, but just prevents "hey cool, new post!" false alarms. ;-)

I don't care one way or the other. I don't know of a way to limit the THREAD to only a specific character. Though I can set up individual forums for each of you. I think I'll do that...now that I think on it.
Nov 28, 2016 10:16 pm
I assume we start at level 1?
Nov 28, 2016 10:20 pm
I must confess I'm not too familiar with Faerun lore. Can someone direct me to a good online resource to learn more about Luskan and Waterdhavian families? I am Googling but you might help me separate the chaff from the wheat so to speak.

Yup, level 1 to start. Likely going to be doing story-driven XP rather than a hyper strict adherence to the creatures.

I just pulled down the class spell lists and then rolled dwhatever number of spells there are. So if you have 17 spells for that level, roll 1d17.
Nov 29, 2016 12:43 am
Here we go!

Rolls

Race - (1d12, 1d10)

1d12 : (10) = 10

1d10 : (9) = 9

Class - (1d12)

(1) = 1

Background, Feature - (1d25, 1d20)

1d25 : (11) = 11

1d20 : (20) = 20

Personality - (2d8)

(52) = 7

Ideal/Bond/Flaw - (3d6)

(423) = 9

Stats - (2d6+6, 2d6+6, 2d6+6, 2d6+6, 2d6+6, 2d6+6)

2d6+6 : (56) + 6 = 17

2d6+6 : (51) + 6 = 12

2d6+6 : (45) + 6 = 15

2d6+6 : (64) + 6 = 16

2d6+6 : (34) + 6 = 13

2d6+6 : (32) + 6 = 11

Reroll Pool - (6d6)

(662644) = 28

Mystery Shopper - (3d100)

(18887) = 113

Works for me, I'll take a look.
Nov 29, 2016 12:48 am
Clearly I should have used the 2d6+6 method of rolling. But of course then I'd get all 1's.
Nov 29, 2016 1:00 am
A couple of questions:
How was the background feature determined, I didn't roll a d8?
For background equipment what does it mean by: any items with which you are proficient?
What is Mariner's armor? Never mind, useless for warlocks. I'm confused.

Aarakocra Barbarian
Str 17
Dex 17 (swapped 1 for 6)
Con 15
Int 16
Wis 16 (swapped 3 for 6)
Cha 15 (swapped 2 for 6)
Sailor Background
Trait - to me, a tavern brawl is a nice way to get to know a new city
Trait - I work hard so that I can play hard when the work is done.
Ideal - I'm a predator and all the other ships on the sea are my pray
Bond - the ship is most important - crew mates and captains come and go
Flaw - once someone questions my courage, I never back down no matter how dangerous the situation.
Mystery shopper gave you the following extra stuff:
Potion of mind reading x 2
Container of 10 ammunition, +2
Nov 29, 2016 1:17 am
@hypco
I took what you rolled on a d20 and divided it by 20, then multiplied by 8 to convert it to what a d8 would have been. Since the backgrounds all have different counts for features, this let me have one dice roll applicable for all.

Mariners armor is light or medium. Since warlocks can wear light armor, this isn't quite useless. If you all end up in the water it can be very useful. You can apply it to any light armor you start with (leather I believe for warlocks).

As for that items you are proficient with thing, any non weapons or armor you are proficient with (so tools and gaming sets and stuff)
Nov 29, 2016 1:18 am
May I use the 6 from my pool and modify my Constitution to 17 instead? Then I can use a 4 in Charisma to bring it to 13.
Nov 29, 2016 1:21 am
Absolutely CancerMan.
Nov 29, 2016 1:32 am
Ooo, follow-up question: assuming my character lives that long, may I try out the Unearthed Arcana Barbarian paths?
Nov 29, 2016 1:52 am
Are we allowed to multi-class? If so, how would that work?
Nov 29, 2016 2:27 am
I'm inclined to allow it. As for how it would work, there's two ways we could play it:

1) You get to choose your multiclass, just like normal.
2) Roll dem bones. My thought is you would roll the 1d12 for class again, as well as 4 fate dice. This would let me find your multiclass selection and then adjust it as needed (if you managed to roll your current class again or rolled a class you weren't qualified for)

Personally, I don't care either way. I think we could get some outrageous combinations with method 2, but how much player agency do you want to surrender to the dice?
Nov 29, 2016 2:47 am
I'm fine with either, however I'd prefer to be multi-classed into something I haven't played yet.
I already have a warlock with the same patron in another game so I want to get away from that class.

Edit: Sorry my mouse sucks and it double posted.

@HypCo - That's absolutely fine with me. I can certainly understand the desire to want to play something you haven't played before.

I think for multiclassing we'll go with method 2, with a minor caveat. I may change some ways certain things function (kind of like the mystery shopper component to normal creation) to give you power for trusting in the dice.

I'd recommend using one of your reroll dice for your Strength if it concerns you. Dramasailor's substitutions were suggested.

The strength requirement only affects your movement speed if you don't meet that requirement:
Quote:
Strength: Heavier armor interferes with the wearer’s ability to move quickly, stealthily, and freely. If the Armor table shows "Str 13" or "Str 15" in the Strength column for an armor type, the armor reduces the wearer’s speed by 10 feet unless the wearer has a Strength score equal to or higher than the listed score.
As a dwarf, you don't even have to worry about it due to this entry:
Quote:
Speed: Your base walking speed is 25 feet. Your speed is not reduced by wearing heavy armor.

I completely forgot dwarfs had that. Thanks!

Flaw - I'm never satisfied with what I have - I always want more.
Mystery Shopper grants you the following extra starting stuff:
Rod of rulership
Nov 29, 2016 8:20 pm
Okay, that's a nice bit of starting gear. Are the scores including racial bonuses?
Nov 29, 2016 8:22 pm
Nope, the scores do NOT include your racial bonuses. You get to add those in when you do your fleshing out. Yeah, you essentially maxed the Mystery Shopper table.
Nov 29, 2016 8:24 pm
What level are we starting at?
Nov 29, 2016 8:33 pm
You'll be starting as Level 1. I'll be posting up the core of why you are all in Luskan in a moment.

I'm not as familiar with the Forgotten Realms timeline as I should be, so bear with me if things get wonky.....

We are after the spellplague, after Mystra's Return, but still within a year or so of that occurrence. Let's call it 1481 DR?

Fair enough! We'll set it at 1480 for the start of the adventure.

You've been summoned to a place called "The Jeweled Bottle" in Neverwinter by a man calling himself Baron Harketts. The letter says only that he has heard through his connections of your skills and that he has a need for them. He is willing to pay handsomely if you would carry out one small duty for him.

Is this game likely to be very RP-focused, or more of a dungeon crawl?
Nov 30, 2016 1:59 am
Honestly, not sure yet. I have a feeling with the crew we have assembled, there will definitely be some heavy RP going down. In terms of encounters, I'm going to pretty much just be using random tables to determine encounters, hoards, etc etc etc. If you guys want a dungeon crawl to commence, I can - ahem - persuade the dice to ensure that a dungeon is available. I half considered having you all just wake up in a dungeon and going from there. But we'll start with some fun RP and see where Lady Luck takes us.

Just waiting on CosmicKeyring's character submission/finalization and we'll jump into the game now. :)

We're not randomizing archetypes and spell selection too, are we? I'm almost tempted to hahaha!

That's cool Snowy. You've still got a few levels til you pick that up anyway. So you can flip flop as much as you like for a bit! Additionally, I gave you a beard and such to get through the baron's party. I will go retcon that to something more dwarfeminine. :)

Cantrips, no. You can prepare new spells 1-9 every rest, however.

Cantrips I have no problem with people changing out when they gain a level (not sure if that's RAW or not, but we'll go that way).

Gained Wildshape improvement.
Learned Produce Flame cantrip.
Gained War Caster feat.
