Don't getchyer panties in a bunch, Billy says to Ryyrik. If'n you figger there's somethin' else you can learn from this place, then learn it.

OOC:
Ryyrik's favored enemy is humanoids. However, as billy said, his panties are in a bunch and he stormed off.
Also, if it changes anything, Primeval Awareness is 5 miles not a mile.

Baern stands. "Nothing within 5 miles, though there could be beyond that. Either way, every humanoid creature within a safe distance is dead, so we're safe on that front. Best get moving now."

OOC:
We can safely say 5 miles with no humanoids.

Ulfren slips into the sled harness. "Keep your wits, lads," he says, signalling his readiness to move when the group does. "There may not be anything on two legs around, but a hungry beast might be out of its hibernation."
Feb 21, 2017 3:58 pm
Phineas finishes cleaning the camp dishes in the snow, and readies his gear for the next leg of the journey.

To Ulfren, he says "It would be a blessing to meet a beast, Ulfren. You might be surprised at the knowledge a beast has about their land, if you know how to listen to their answers."
Feb 21, 2017 4:02 pm
"Assuming they're in the mood to talk," Ulfren says.
Feb 21, 2017 8:46 pm
"I'll grant you that, Ulfren: beasts can be unpredictable and we should be cautious to avoid harming them. However, like all creatures their mood greatly improves when they feel respected and safe."

"I don't expect to see much in the way of beasts, anyway. A beast needs more than snow and ice to eat. And I noticed that nothing had munched on those cans of food Baern found. in the age that we've been slumbering, not even a mouse has wandered past this farmhouse or it would have gobbled up the contents of those cans, frozen or not."

Phineas kept talking, zipping from topic to topic like a dragonfly flitting across a pond.

"Ulfren, the song you sang for Dirk: that was deeply moving. I must admit that I've never properly learned the songs of our people, being in the forest so much and, thankfully, never having the need to attend a funeral for my kin. I've heard the fair songs of the Elves, but I did not feel them in my bones the way I did with your song. I would like to learn them some day, if you have the time."

Ulfren grunts approvingly. "Dwarvish song comes from deep within," he says, thumping his abdomen for emphasis. "Aye, elvish music is all light and airy, and we joke that it's because their heads're in the clouds. But a dwarf is from the earth, and our songs echo the ancient murmurs of the land.

"Truth be told, Billy would be best for the old songs. I only know the chants of the forge and of the fallen."
Feb 22, 2017 1:33 am
"I fear that I will have need for the songs of the fallen when I return ... my father was very old when we set sail for this island, and who knows how long we have been gone. Many thanks, I will also enquire with Billy about this matter."
Feb 22, 2017 5:39 am
Billy, overhearing the conversation, sighs deeply. I got fears a my own and they don't involve runnin' out of fallen to sing for. I reckon it's a bad business we're headed for and singin' songs about dyin' ain't gonna lift the mood none. Best to leave the past in the past. Yesterday’s gone, we can’t get it back.

He jumps up, claps his hands loudly, and pulls out his dulcimer. Enough navel-gazin'! It's life that accompanies us! It's love that will spur us on. Billy's grin is big and genuine. Here's a song fer ya, Phineas! Don't be singin' it in mixed company or in front of youngins! Though if ya find yerself a lady love who grins when you sing it to her, she might just be one to keep! He hammers out a note on his dulcimer and belts out, You need cooling! before breaking out with a raucous song whose bawdy subject matter is thinly veiled at best.

Gunnar bobs his head to the rhythm of Billy's song. "Let's get moving before Ryyrik leaves us all behind!"
Feb 22, 2017 11:38 am
Baern stands without a word and strides off after Ryyrik. If you didn't know better, you might think he was trying to get away from the song.
Feb 22, 2017 4:29 pm
Ulfren pulls the sled, boots finding whatever purchase can be had upon the snow and ice.

OOC:
Bildarrak "Billy" Niengald is granted inspiration for an excellent song choice.

You walk on further, the ice and snow slowly turning to more of a slushy mix. You start passing a few more houses along the way, more of the same as the last ones. You come up to a house, the door is frozen, slightly open and bent. An Orc stands in the doorway brandishing an ax and waving as to run someone through with it. On the inside you see an old man holding a broom, both are frozen in place as if time stopped for them.
Feb 23, 2017 12:36 am
"It's almost beautiful, if not for them being alive at one point. The world's most brutal statues." Ryyrik says in a low tone, as the party catches up with him in front of the house.
Feb 23, 2017 12:48 am
Ulfren smirks as he shoulders the sled. "Too bad we don't have a spear," he jokes, darkly. "Switch it out for the broom and if they ever wake the orc's got a nasty surprise."
Feb 23, 2017 1:23 am
Gunnar puts his gun's muzzle to the orc's head. "Maybe we should make sure there's no chance of this scene actually playing out." The dwarf stays that way for a few moments before lowering his weapon, shaking his head, surprised by the ruthlessness of his own words.

"Good thinking, Gunnar, your gun is far too loud." Ryyrik walks over, drawing his warhammer, and swinging at the frozen orc's legs.
Feb 23, 2017 1:42 am
Billy puts a gentle but firm hand on Gunnar's arm. You know I wouldn't let you kill a helpless foe, he says, and I know how it would haunt you if I did. He smiles and sighs. Besides, these folks won't get more dead. Let's just hope that the cold that killed them don't come back. Billy gets in close to the bodies, and says, Phineas, what do you make of this?
