Character Creation and World Building

Feb 16, 2017 1:32 am
Before we jump in to making characters I think we should start by establishing some things about Tirisfel, and the world it lives in.

Tirisfel isn't a large town, it contains maybe 100 or so people, my gut reaction is to make the major race humans, but I'd be open to being convinced differently...

I'd like this game to have a strong feel of the diablo aesthetic in the game, so we probably will keep the tech stuff moderately low (no artificers then). I'm currently debating with myself if I want to outright ban clerics and warlocks as well, or if they just need a reskin, or if I'm just being silly and they actually fit. Thoughts?

I'll be curious to know if you are familiar with the diablo series or not, so let me know either here or in the OOC.

I am not familiar with the diablo series, and I will not be overly put out if warlocks and clerics are invalid. With the situation you stipulated, I'm considering a half-elf bard, though I could go human rogue... I also have a elf UA Hunter Conclave ranger pre-generated at level 3 from another game. I love monks, but since you said this is going to be less combat oriented I'm looking at less combat oriented options...
As to predominant race, I'm really not picky.

Will this lean outdoors? I was thinking high wisdom ranger (UA) can be the healer to some extent. Also, if you would leverage passive perception for the RP of it, I was thinking human variant with observant feat to be that guy who is good at just seeing stuff....Oh look, tracks! And I wasn't even looking for them! (unless you feel that combat is more important, then maybe crossbow expert feat ) I would need to know a tad bit more about the world to pick the right favored enemy.... if it is underground mostly (dungeon crawling in hell?), then maybe deep stalker...

I only dabbled in Diablo

Also, what level do you envision this going to?

So with all of the shadows roaming around, I'm sure that favoured enemy (undead) is probably the most sensible.

I haven't really chosen a destination for this, I feel that we will level, but I'm not sure how many times. This is mostly because I kind of want to know what you guys are keen to do. Currently I have a more overland kind of feel but that's just for the start. I have some plans for a massive dungeon crawl that we could do if you want, or we can focus more on the settlement if that's what your more eager for.

There will be some combat but it won't be a focus.

Why wouldn't I let that, fits perfectly in the setting!

The feature is OP but really cool.

I never saw it that way, there are sufficient conditions on it that keeps it manageable, also the RP powers don't allow you to do crazy things in my experience.

I have played Diablo few times before, but I was quite younger than I am now so I would say that I am not familiar.

I was imagining a Human Fighter. I am not familiar with the non-PHB classes which is why I chose fighter above all. He will be a hero of the people; laying down his life to protect others. I didn't suppose a selfless nob;e would fit, so I saw Folk Hero for thhe people to be the proper background choice.

I played Diablo 1 & 2 extensively on Windows PC back in the 90's, and got to try Diablo 3 on PlayStation last year. Great fun! For classes if it were up to me to approximate the theme I'd say Clerics are definitely out, though Paladins are in. I might keep Warlock but ban Fiend patrons. Then again, I can totally see a hero in this story striking a deal with one fiend to defeat another! As for race, yeah it seems humans only is the way to go but if you feel that's too limiting then at least ban tieflings, maybe?

I was considering running humans and halfhumans only. I was also planning on allowing tieflings and aasimar but just having them as humans of different lineages. After all in the setting everyone hast the blood of angels and demons in there veins.

That makes sense. :-)

And you did say you are simply taking inspiration from Diablo anyway - there's really nothing reason not to put your own spin to it.

Jabes, another game? This is an illness. ;)

I think I will go for a half-elf bard then, with the stipulations you've set up. No college choice yet, but very possibly college of lore.
I'm game to take this as far as the DM feels like.

When creating our characters are we to roll within the forum, use the point-buy system, or either of them?
Feb 16, 2017 9:03 pm
I'm fine with either, but no w of this in between stuff, so if you roll, you can't then decide you'll do point buy after seeing the results.

I did point buy because I already have a specific build in mind.
