1.3 Sanctuary - the Dungeon Town

Mar 3, 2017 10:08 am
Following the road down past the black lake, you encounter little in the way of traffic other than the occasional fisherman sat on the banks of the the lake in the gloom trying their hand at finding some food. You do see one or two who have caught fish and their catch looks less than appetising. Slimy black fish with bulbous heads and a single eye on a stalk. You reckon you'd rather fight it than fry it up and eat it.

You start to approach the outskirts of the small gloomy town in the Devouring Dark's belly. The first shacks are hastily thrown together out of what looks like driftwood but you soon come to realise that this is just the flotsam remaining from what the dungeon digested and spat back out. Various 'citizens' mill around and you can see that this is a cut-throats paradise. Lawless and ungoverned with an uneasy peace barely holding between the residents, most of whom seem to be a collection of either jaded adventurers or monsters of the more acceptable variety - Kobolds, a spattering of Orcs and some Goblins - all thrown together by the circumstances of having been devoured by a more malevolent enemy.

Buildings become much more solidly constructed the further you venture into the town. The tower you saw from a distance looms over everything, positioned at the far end of the town. More immediately though, two things grab your attention. The first is a wooden sign with the words "Welcome to Sanctuary. Crossbow free town." scratched into it. The second is more dramatic. A resounding crash sees a halfling come flying head first through a window to your right and sprawl bleeding at your feet. Looking to see from whence he came you see a tavern, complete with garish brightly lit signage reading "The No Escape Inn".

"Well clearly one can escape, one just needs to throw a Halfling through a window and exit..." Xanxus comments before poking the Halfing with the tip of his boot, "Oy, you dead?"
Mar 4, 2017 4:02 am
Domitius chuckled slightly at Xanxus' humor before squatting beside the halfling. Without waiting for permission, he began feeling feeling the skull for signs of fractures or bruising, muttering softly to himself about the skull being so much like a child's but the bones not being nearly as soft. "I wonder if there is a place we can stay where we can leave in a less forceful manner?"
Mar 4, 2017 12:19 pm
"I'd like to see them try to eject me in the same way," Haguk shrugs, moving towards the inn.
Mar 5, 2017 5:13 pm
The Halfling stirs, shakes his head and dusts himself down. Looking back up at the window which he just flew through he smiles, stands up, produces a stick from his pocket and draws a line in the dust of the street where he landed.

He shouts back in through the jagged window "Ten and a half yards if I'm not mistaken". A huge cheer erupts from inside the tavern.

"Somewhere safe to stay? You're not serious are ye. You're in the bowels of a bloody great dungeon. If there's anywhere safe here I'd be surprised, although Sanctuary is as safe as it gets I suppose. Seems the bastard can't get us here. We're like a cancer in it's gut. The No Escape would do you fine, and they'll take your money soon as anyone elses."
Mar 6, 2017 2:57 pm
"Well if one could eject you in the same way they'd been exceptionally strong and we'd likely offer up a bond of friendship to them..." Xanxus offers to Haguk.

"Lead the way Crasher... does the No Escape Inn have those looking for people to do work... say crazier than jumping out a window to find out how far one travels... like... explore the beast to start killing it from within for a cost and to obtain it's riches?" Xanxus inquires his teeth like fangs flashing socialably to the short fellow with the thoughts of possible coin to be made.
Mar 7, 2017 2:51 am
Domitius sat back on his heels, startled, "You're not hur.....you were throw...." Then he laughed, long and hard. Wiping the tears from his eyes, he chortled, "Oh yes, wayward dart, lead us to those who's arms threw you ten and a half yards. We are new and would be pleased to find a patron who might hire our services."
Mar 7, 2017 10:27 pm
As you enter the Inn, you are surprised to note that even as you cross the threshold there is already a glazier repairing the broken window. Your new found Halfling friend seems to pay close attention to exactly how much putty is being applied to the panes and briefly. Once inside the Inn, your attention is drawn to the somewhat shaky clientele, many of which are standing round a board with names and distances marked on it.

Your new friend turns to you. "Nice to meet you chaps. I'm Rolf the Helmet. So called because I prefer to take the blow square on the bare cranium and sarcasm is a popular trait in Sanctuary. Anyway, fella that runs this gaff is called Morthil Harker. He'll see you right."

He points to a large burly man ladeling soup into a wooden bowl. The man looks up and grunts at you.
Mar 8, 2017 2:04 pm
Xanxus nods flicking a random piece of shrapnel out of Rolf's hair before going to see Harker.

"Harker, names Villandrando." he explains pulling back his hood and removing his face mask. "We're looking for a box for the Black Mistress... it's likely in the nastiest parts around here and well guarded. Could you point us to someone who would have a decent map of this place and those who know how to delve into the dark deeper parts that even the mostly insane wouldn't adventure? Also is there any work to be done for those of clever mind or... violent heart?" he states looking at the man with the ladle to gauge his response.
Mar 9, 2017 3:12 am
Looking at the soup the Marthil is ladeling up reminded Domitius that it had been quite some time since his last meal. He added, "And along with that information, might I trouble you for some of that soup?"
Mar 11, 2017 5:02 pm
"Which soup you after? Mushroom Soup or Mushroom Surprise Soup?"

Morthil eyes you all warily while absent-mindedly stirring the ladel. "What's this about a box? Lot's of boxes pass through these parts. Some valuable, some not so. What's so special about this box?"

He returns to stirring the soup then looks up again. "You could try Tord. Anything vaguely of interest usually comes to his attention, whether it wants to or not. You'll have seen his tower at the end of town."
Mar 11, 2017 6:24 pm
"I've had enough surprises for a lifetime," Haguk shrugs, then listens while he waits for a serving of soup. Once he gets some he slurps it loudly. He speaks both between mouthfuls and in the middle of them, causing soup to run down and stain his tunic. "What is it with towers? Why do they always live in a tower? It's never the wizard's hovel."
Mar 12, 2017 2:54 am
"I LOVE surprises!" Blackstar pipes up, rubbing his hands together and taking a seat. "Hit me!"
Mar 13, 2017 4:42 pm
Xanxus thanks the man for the information and opts for Mushroom Soup at least to get a feel for what food will be like for the next few days down here.

"Magi always build towers, store their experiments and research, takes longer for things to escape, better in the long run if there's an explosion. That's why they're out on the outskirts of towns usually. Less damage to the town if there's a fire, explosion, river of accident or something breaks out, they usually go into the wild versus the middle of town. It's odd they get nervous about people coming around with pitchforks and a noose, not because they'll die but because they're likely to disturb something on the way up and they're not ready to take notes on the horrific outcome. That's why some places have mercaneries go in to 'safely' bring the magic user out." he states to Haguk possibly sounding a bit jaded.

Xanxus adjusts a glove and looks to the odder yet chipper member of their party, "You mean the soup right?"
Mar 13, 2017 4:54 pm
"Yeah, sure, the soup, the soup." Blackstar chuckles. The odd man looks around the No Escape Inn. He feels right at home.
Mar 13, 2017 5:41 pm
Domitius leaned toward the pot, trying to get a glimpse of what might be inside, "I'd like the Mushroom Surprise Soup, thank you. What can you tell us about Tord?"
Mar 14, 2017 10:17 am
"Certainly, I always like a customer who asks about our food which is all sourced locally. That's both an ethical decision on our part and a practical one, seeing as we're in the bowels of a huge living dungeon which kind of makes external trade problematic. Oh, but I nearly forgot, you want to know about the Mushroom Surprise soup? Well it's the same as the Mushroom soup except the surprise is that there isn't any mushroom in it. Bread with that?"
Mar 14, 2017 12:22 pm
Blackstar looks genuinely disappointed. "Needs more mayhem, this place does. Way more." he grumbles. An eye stalk sprouts from somewhere in his suit and peers around the room. Plucking the eyeball from its stalk, Blackstar drops it into his soup and continues eating. "Oh good, some bread!"
Mar 14, 2017 6:34 pm
"Told you there were no good surprises," Haguk mutters when told what the surprise is. "Unless you don't like mushrooms I guess."

"Want an eyeball? I've got plenty more."
