1.0 - The Marsh Bell

You manage to exit through the watery grotto without fuss -- surfacing quickly in the shallow pool and wading in the afternoon sunlight towards the edges. The group of you make something of a ruckus in the water, making it hard to hear if the strange bell still tolls. Greenish-tinged crows wheel and caw overhead as you emerge from the water, clearly annoyed at your presence. Otherwise, things are quiet here.

"With this," he says, hefting the box Inar has given to him, "we need not return to our camp. But I think it may be wise for us to consider a return to Laketown and seek an alternate way to deliver this. Unless you lot had in mind a bit of a journey." He casts his eyes towards the deeper parks of Mirkwood that lurk nearby and clearly doesn't fancy that particular task at this point.

Gilly's eyes sparkle with excitement and she throws a pleading look at her brother while she mouths The King of the Eagles!
Jan 12, 2018 11:21 am
Inar ponders Balin's words for a few moments before responding "We are somewhat lacking in supplies for an extended expedition especially considering the size of our group. Perhaps it would be best to return to Laketown as you say Lord Balin so we can resupply at the very least. If you did feel a larger group then would be for the best to ensure the success of your endeavour I, and I am sure my companions also, would be willing to accompany you."

"Well," says Frór without much forethought, "I would eagerly embark on the journey, and little Gilly seems to have a keen look in her eyes too! Is there no friendly house along the way at which to resupply? Or other means of finding provisions? Tighten our belts and press onwards, I say! (If possible…)"
Jan 19, 2018 6:19 am
Balin shakes his head. "I know of no where to resupply other than the forest itself -- and I do not think it is safe to hunt their absent a keen understanding of its wiles. It has been some years since I last crossed it, and I do not relish doing so again without adequate supplies."

Oin nods and adds, "I agree. Given the state of supplies, Inar has the best course of action. Gloin can determine how he'd like this delivered. And we can be safely away -- and able to rest."

Sorry for the egregious delay. I'm being slammed by work lately. It'll keep up for at least another couple weeks.

With Balin and Oin's voice and vote -- you valiantly agree to escort them back to Laketown. Moving the boats upstream is a slog, but you're able to make some progress as the river is relatively lazy through the marshes. Closer to the Stair of Girion it becomes rougher going, but you manage to make it and have your boats ported back up the stair.

You find yourselves back in Laketown after about eight days (compared to the scant 3 or so it took you to find your way south) and although you are tired, you nonetheless return your charges and their box safely to Gloin, who is clearly overjoyed to see his brother -- and Balin as well. As a reward for a job well done, you have earned both the friendship of Gloin and ten gemstones of fine value.

We enter now into the Fellowship phase... do you guys need a refresher or do you have the source material to assist?

OOC:
I think the main thing that would bear into our approach for the Fellowship phase would be how much time in game will pass until we pick things up again? If it's just going to be a few days then it'd probably make sense for us all to stick together but if it was going to be longer than a few weeks we'd probably break the fellowship and agree to meet back up at a later date

Omenstar says:
Fellowship phase is usually at least a season,as I understand it.
OOC:
Quote from the Players Guide:

A Fellowship phase lasts from a few days to one full season of game time, depending on the Loremaster’s structuring of the game.

Thank you! I stand corrected.

The early spring of your journey's beginning has, in the subsequent couple of weeks of Adventure turned into more of a proper spring. Returning to Laketown with Balin and Oin has been a boon to your noteriety and to your purse. Although summer usually is a grand time to step out again and adventure, you each are keenly aware that in the Fall, there will be a celebration of the fifth anniversary of the Battle of Five Armies.

The choice before you then, is whether or not you take your now -- mid-spring -- selves into further adventure, or if you choose to keep a low profile over the summer so that you can participate in the celebrations this Fall. Of course, if you adventure farther, you may find yourselves far away when the big event occurs -- but such is the nature of adventure.
OOC:
From a campaign POV, I can work with either a relatively quick (~1 month) turn around and Fellowship phase, or we can wait until 2947 to pick things up. So that you can enjoy the party and hurry home to enjoy the winter months among kin. What would be the preference of the Fellowship?

As a side note -- once we're done with the phase -- we'll likely hit a 1-2 month hiatus while I try and get a handle on work and ensure I have more time to continue with this!

Party? Of course we stay for the party!

Inar wouldn't mind either way so I'll go with the group consensus

OOC:
Are we advancing a level at this point?

Also wondering if we're going to use the additional undertakings from the Loremaster's Guide? Although, I guess gaining open or cultural virtues aren't available yet, regardless, as this is our first Fellowship Phase, right?
As a foot-soldier who fought in the Battle of Five Armies, Frór wouldn't want to miss the anniversary victory celebration. "Think how the ale will flow at this party, Inar! And we'll sing the old songs of victory; and we'll make new ones too! I should re-avow my vengeance at the auspicious occasion too, me thinks!"

Then Frór clears his throat and rehearses: "Ah-hem! In witness to the might and fury of Beorn in his slaying of the orc chief, Bolg, I declare that it shall be a Dwarf that will repay the debt by slaying all the sons of Bolg from this day forth until his line is utterly failed and forgotten! And that Dwarf shall be me! This I swear as my Oath to all Dwarves and Men who hear it this day in battle!

What do you think?"

Blows the dust off the thread.

Ok. *cough* *cough*

It looks like consensus is to stay in Laketown and have a quiet summer so you can attend the party in the fall up in Dale. Afterwards, you will winter over either in Laketown or back at your home(s) in Erebor or the Shire with a plan to meet up again in the spring of 2947. For the 'every-other' undertakings, you may choose to exercise them now as it's your first fellowship and the rules are not explicit when the 'every other' begins (e.g. is it 1st and 3rd or 2nd and 4th?).

Every character advances in level - so it may be worthwhile to talk about your Fellowship phase/undertaking with this new experience coming to bear somehow.

I think, generally, a Fellowship phase is meant for y'all to roleplay / dictate what happens, etc. The broad strokes for each of you is:

1) spend the rest of summer in Lakedown
2) head up to Dale for a fun party in the fall
3) winter over in Laketown or Erebor (dwarves) or the Shire (Hobbits).
4) reconvene in Laketown in the summer

OOC:
So would we just narrate what goes off for our character through the entire phase or each of the 3 ‘activities’ before we reconvene?
May 23, 2018 3:30 am
OOC:
Sure. You could also do it in parts in case you want to play off of one another?

OOC:
Perhaps some prompts will help? You are in Laketown for the summer. You all plan to head to Dale in time for the celebration in the Fall. You've returned Gloin's kin and have not only his thanks but a few shiny trinkets to boot. How would you spend your summer?

After a week of sitting around taking his ease Inar begins to get a little anxious. Perhaps it’s the feeling that things cant be this good for too long or seeing the same faces too many times making him think that he’s being watched but soon Inar decides he needs to get clear of things for a while. Leaving a message for his friends that he’ll see them in Dale in the autumn he heads out into the wilderness around Laketown mainly to get some distance so he can see any enemies coming but he also finds the odd task helping some of the smaller settlements in the area over the summer months before he finally starts making his way north.
OOC:
Hoping that’s ok, how do you want to handle levelling up? You want us to post in the char creation thread for hp rolls and the like?
