1.0 - The Marsh Bell

OOC:
Beginning a slow roll while I wait to see if Greenspectre will join us...
It is early spring, 2946. The Battle of the Five Armies was five years past. You meet here after an exciting summer last year in which Gilly and Robin Took joined a caravan east for "adventure" -- much to the dismay and disapproval of many of their kin. Inar and Thovetar met up with this caravan as it entered the High Pass and joined on for security in numbers. For while the Enemy had been badly hurt years ago -- evil still walked the Wild.

The journey over the High Pass and down into the Vales of the Anduin was uneventful and the caravan happily traded what they could with the Beornings who kept watch over that part of the Wild before moving on to the Woodman at Woodland Hall and a bit more south to Woodman Town before looping north once more along the western edge of Mirkwood and across towards Esgaroth (Lake-town) and Dale along the Old Forest Road. There, the caravan was set upon by a raft of nasty spiders and each of you acquitted yourself well -- even the Hobbits! For this, the caravan expressed immense gratitude and left each of you with an extra gold coin at the end of your journey.
OOC:
You may assume 1gp in addition to your purse.
After the winter, your fellowship has returned to Esgaroth, or Lake-Town, to reconnect after the winter back home. In the five years since the attack by the dragon Smaug, Esgaroth has rebuilt itself upon the water of the Long Lake. Free people of all the races are seen regularly throughout the town - bustling about their business plying trade between Erebor and Dale to the north and the Woodland Kingdom to the west.

You are all well-familiar with Esgaroth as it is today, having spent some time here last year after successfully guiding the caravan hither.

You sit at an outdoor table in the Merchants' district, having put away a healthy meal and a tankard or two of good drink. Lounging over some remaining bits of cheese and freshly baked bread and a half-consumed jar of honey.
Mar 10, 2017 8:07 am
Inar sits back and takes a long pull on his ale, feeling relaxed and satisfied after such a meal....he knows such feelings are fleeting, no matter what victories the majority in these parts think they have struck against the enemy. As he sits there he glances across he sees a human watching their table, the figure smiles and nods in greeting before turning back to his companions, how long was he watching us? Inar thinks to himself looks harmless enough....looks can be deceiving though!.

His thoughts take a dark turn as he starts dwelling upon the fact the enemy could have eyes anywhere. Realising his appetite is gone he pushes his plate away, knowing full well the hobbits will finish off anything he has left. "Well laddies, as good as nice meals and comfy beds are I feel the need to be out in the world. Do any of you have any ideas on where we should be heading next? Guarding the odd caravan isn't the most exiting work in the world....well, not normally at any rate!' he finishes with a chuckle

"Oh, well," Robin replies with his Shire accent and slightly higher pitched voice, "I don't know about that, Stoutfoot. Guarding caravans gets you such a view of the world. Think of all we saw last Summer, and all the places we traveled." He laughs, "I've never been to so many places in m' whole life!" Robin had already eaten his plate and drank his ale, and now he relaxes back in his chair, a lit pipe in his hand, and the smell of fragrant pipeweed floating about him in thin, wispy tendrils. His bare, hairy feet hang off of the chair and swing back and forth, unable to reach the ground. He sits up when the dwarf pushes his food away, and Robin asks with an eager look on his face, "Are ya full already?" He points at Inar's food and asks, "May I?"
Mar 10, 2017 7:55 pm
Inar chuckles at the hobbits seemingly insatiable appetite "Be my guest laddie" he says as he passes the plate over to Robin "Well caravan's will only get ya to some places, there's a whole lot of world out there to see off the beaten track"
Mar 12, 2017 11:29 pm
Gilly deftly snags several choice pieces as the plate passes by her on its way to her brother. Between bites she agrees, "There is so much more to see, and to learn! I'm excited to get out there again. And glad to see you, my friends!" she smiles at her companions.
Mar 14, 2017 2:04 am
At an adjacent table, a man leans over towards Inar. "Haven't you not yet heard the news? Gloin has had a Raven from the Mountain." Deciding that Inar's look is one of confusion, he adds, "Sinister news indeed good friend from the Mountain. It seems two of your kin -- messengers of the king -- have gone missing! Gloin himself has spread word that he's looking for any news of the lost messengers."
Mar 14, 2017 2:26 am
"I'd be willing to look into this, of course. I would need any sort of information that is already known about these two. But I would be willing to go and look for them. Anyone else interested?"
Mar 14, 2017 8:26 am
"Aye lad, seems as good a bet as any" Inar starts to gather his things before turning to the man "Do you know where the message was delivered to? Or any more information about where they went missing?"
Mar 14, 2017 12:16 pm
"It sounds worthwhile," Robin says with a smile, though he looks toward his sister for confirmation. "Gloin.. wasn't he one of those warriors that cousin Bilbo mentioned?" Robin's expression grew somewhat serious and he shook his head in a disappointing manner, "I can't always keep up with that fellow's tales."
Mar 14, 2017 2:42 pm
The man shakes his head at Inar's question. "I've heard only for the call for information and news that your kin were missing. I was surprised to hear you ask about what was next on your travel plans. If you've guarded caravans, I suspected you'd be stout-hearted enough to be investigating this if you but knew..." He smiles as he delivers the unfortunate news with his compliment. "Perhaps Gloin has more information?"

Not trying to put y'all on rails -- you are welcome to secure more information how you see fit!
Mar 14, 2017 3:34 pm
Inar nods at the mans words "My thanks" he says to the figure before turning back to his companions "Gloin has a mansion in town. If he's put the call out there is the best bet to get some more information about the disappearances"
Mar 14, 2017 4:04 pm
"Aye. Should we head to the mansion then?"
Mar 14, 2017 11:03 pm
Gilly pauses in taking notes to flip back through her book, "Yes, I believe...ah yes, here it is...Fili, Kili, Oin, Gloin, Dwalin, Balin, Bifur, Bofur, Bombur, Dori, Nori, Ori, and of course, Thorin." She closes the book with a satisfied snap, oblivious that the conversation has passed on while she was engrossed in her book.
Mar 15, 2017 1:22 pm
Robin exhales a thin line of smoke, looking pleased with himself that he remembered the name correctly.
Mar 15, 2017 1:32 pm
thatguy2 says:
"Aye. Should we head to the mansion then?"
Inar nods "Aya laddie, lets head over now" he says as he gathers the last of his things and starts heading for the door, his eyes flicking about in their usual wariness as he moves to the exit.
Mar 15, 2017 2:35 pm
"Alright then. Let's go." Thovétar gathers his things and heads for the door.
Mar 15, 2017 11:54 pm
Gilly wraps her book and returns it to her satchel, together with her quill and ink. She stands to follow the others, turning to her brother with a broad grin.
Mar 16, 2017 2:22 am
The trip to the mansion is short -- Lake-town, or Esgaroth, is not that large after all -- even rebuilt to greater glory as it has been these past five years. Gloin's mansion is near the town-hall, so finding your way is straightforward. It is a stately home, with broad double doors and pillars to give testament to its greatness. Gilded carvings here and there -- none of dragons -- hint at the richness of the home and its occupants. At your knock, a dwarven manservant answers the door and peers at the four of you with some curiosity.

"May I be of service to you?" He seems to be explicitly asking Inar, given he's a Dwarf.
Mar 16, 2017 8:44 am
Inar coughs to clear his throat, trying to sound as formal as he can which isn't vastly different from his usual gruff tone "Greetings, I am Inar Stoutfoot. Myself an my companions heard word about town of a message that had recently been received by Lord Gloin about some missing messengers. Whilst we do not have any information about this we wanted to offer our assistance if it would be welcome".
Mar 16, 2017 4:34 pm
The manservant nods and opens the door to let you all in. Thovetar gets a sidelong glance while the Hobbits get a friendly smile. You are led into a receiving room that is richly appointed, "Master Gloin shall be here shortly," the manservant intones before backing out the door and closing it before him, somewhat pompously.
Mar 16, 2017 6:08 pm
Inar nods in thanks to the manservant. As the door closes he sags a little and lets out a relieved breath, looking more comfortable now the servant is not in the room with them.
Mar 17, 2017 2:39 pm
After a few minutes, Gloin enters the sitting room with you. "Greetings." he says, noncommittally. "Welcome to my home, how may I be of service?" He wipes ink from his fingers is barely contained impatience and is dressed in rich, white clothing that just matches the hue of the tips of his forked beard.
OOC:
You should pick a spokesperson to make the introduction and speak officially for the group -- though you all can contribute to the conversation and roleplay. It's an Intelligence (Traditions) check at DC15. At a meta-level you will have the most success with another Dwarf doing this (Inar), the Hobbits will be pretty favorable, and the Dunedain will be a bit risky.
Mar 17, 2017 3:08 pm
Just before the door opens Inar is stood to one side with Thovétar "Look laddie, I know you're sound and there's few in this world I'd rather have at my back but some can be a bit....prickly with yer countrymen. May be best to stick to polite introductions and let one of the others do most of the talking". The door opens before they can discuss the matter any further. As Gloin enters Inar straightens himself again and waits for Gloin to greet them before bowing deeply "Inar Stoutfoot, at your service" he says as he straightens "And these are my companions" he says as he gestures them forwards.
OOC:
Ok, Inar would be rolling at no bonus to his Traditions check so it may be best for someone else to take the lead

"Hello to you, Master Gloin," Robin speaks up with a smile, wiping out the interior of his pipe with a small cloth. He inclines his head very briefly and introduces himself, "Robin Took."
OOC:
Robin is pretty good with Traditions, and is a smarty pants. I'm up for it, unless anyone else prefers.
Mar 18, 2017 12:12 pm
Gilly gives a little bow, "Gilly Took, at your service," then takes out her book again to take notes.
OOC:
Happy to let Robin do the talking.
Mar 18, 2017 1:06 pm
"Thovétar of Gondor, at your service, sir."
OOC:
Robin can do the talking.
Mar 18, 2017 2:02 pm
"Master Gloin," Robin repeats, his face growing more serious and respectful as he pockets his pipe, "We heard the troubling news of your missing kinsmen; those brave messengers. We are here now, eager to lend you some aid should you need it, and to hear some further report as to their disappearance, if that isn't too much of a bother."

Roll is a success. This means that Gloin's Friendly disposition towards the party becomes Favoured. Which basically means you'll have a good interaction. :)
At this introduction, Gloin smiles broadly. Nodding to Inar he says, "I had little doubt a Dwarf would come upon hearing the news -- but it's with great pleasure to see you two, Master and Mistress Hobbit. Years ago, Master Baggins was of enormous assistance to us in our Quest," this latter word is said such that you can hear the capitalization of it. "It is grave news -- but I feel better hearing that you would assist."

Finding a seat near the fire, which is kept low at this time of day to just take the bite of the spring chill, Gloin explains. "My cousin Balin son of Fundin has left the Lonely Mountain with a companion. He was meant to personally deliver a letter, a formal invitation from King Dáin Ironfoot to the Lord of the Eagles for the coming Gathering of Five Armies, an important meeting to be held later this year. He planned to go south along the Running River, to investigate the conditions of the Old Forest Road and possibly traverse it, now that the threat of Goblins has been greatly reduced."

Each of you gauge this path against a mental map in your head...

https://s3.amazonaws.com/gamersplane/TOR/Dwarf-Path.JPG

He adds, "I don’t know what happened, but unfortunately the possibilities are many in these days of doubt... if the perils o f Wilderland were not enough, there are always the suspicious dwellers of the Woodland Realm to consider. They are sworn enemies of the Shadow, but unfortunately they don’t love Dwarves and watch their land jealously. I hope my concerns are ill-placed, but I wouldn’t be surprised if Balin had found himself again a guest of the Elvenking’s celebrated hospitality..." At this, he looks a bit sour, as if remembering some event in his past that leaves a bad taste in his mouth.
OOC:
Feel free to ask some more questions if you like. Some examples could be Persuasion or Intimidation to reassure him that you're up to the task, or Insight and Riddle to see if there's some unstated sub-text. Or whatever else comes to mind. Rolls are not required. Assume a DC15 unless I note otherwise.
Mar 21, 2017 9:29 pm
The mention of his cousin takes Robin by surprise, and for a moment his composure fails him and he goes a bit wide-eyed. He'd always assumed that Baggins' tale was complete nonsense, but perhaps there was some truth to it? Surely there had to be a significant amount of fabrication.

At being given their briefing, Robin places a finger to his chin as he imagines the route that these Dwarves had taken. He was not so used to the Wilderland just yet, as it was so unlike the Shire, and he may need to examine a map proper before he has a clear understanding. He also considers Gloins use of vocabulary, to attempt to ascertain if there was anything left unsaid, or anything carefully spoken over, in order to glean more detail about their task.

Regardless, he does reply with an inquiry, "When were you to hear from them, and when, did you say, did they leave?"

Mar 22, 2017 8:30 pm
Inar inclines his head towards Gloin "Me and my companions stand ready to help wherever we can" he says before stroking his beard as he ponders the route outlined "That's a lot of terrain to cover. We're they travelling alone or with others?
Mar 22, 2017 9:53 pm
Gilly grins at her brother's surprise. She had always believed Bilbo's tales, and can't wait to tease him about this.
Mar 22, 2017 11:35 pm
Gloin responds first to Robin, "On a... hunch, I called for Hraf, son of Hrabin, to seek out Balin and his companion. My brother, Oin. This was a few days after they set out -- and Hraf immediately left the Mountain and followed the route that Balin and Oin were taking, but could not find them anywhere. It was as if they had been swallowed by the marshes." Robin hears this and the pause on 'hunch' is telling. He is suspicious that Gloin isn't quite as forthcoming about this hunch as he could be. Perhaps he's embarrassed by it.

To Inar, Gloin finishes, "Balin and Oin were travelling alone. For this journey, it was felt that a smaller party that was lighter afoot would bring less notice to it and travel more safely and quickly. It is just the two of them, alas."
Mar 24, 2017 3:20 pm
"Tell me true, Master Gloin," Robin says, clearly looking very proud of himself, but still trying to carefully navigate this discussion, "Could it have only been a hunch? I've heard such tales of Dwarven intellect that I imagine you must have had some reason to have sent Hraf to look for Master Balin and Master Oin." Robin looks hopeful, "Please, we only wish to find your kin; we do not cast judgment today."
Mar 26, 2017 6:45 pm
Gloin looks a little embarassed. "Well, truth be told -- I awoke from a most vivid and disturbing dream. In it, my brother Oin was drowning in dark waters. I was sufficiently agitated when I awoke that I asked the Raven Hraf to perform that favor for me."

After an uncomfortable pause he says, "Very well. I am pleased to charge you with the duty to seek out Balin and Oin and find them, or bring word of what has befallen them." He stands and walks over to a nearby desk, withdrawing a few pieces of paper. "Here is a map of their proposed path. And here are papers which will permit you the loan of some boats should you prefer to use boats down the river." He hands these over to Robin with some ceremony. "Is there anything else I can do for you?"
Mar 26, 2017 11:45 pm
Gilly reaches into her bag and pulls out a package. She carefully unwraps the leather covering revealing two small books, identical in every way, except that one is more worn than the other. She holds out the pristine copy, saying, "Mr. Gloin, sir, my cousin Bilbo wrote this about his adventure with you and your kin. He asked that I give it to you should we every meet any of you. He's very shy, but I think it's just marvelous." She looks down and shyly scuffs the floor, then she holds out the other copy diffidently, "An' I know it's an imposition and all, but do you suppose you might possibly be willing to make your mark on my copy? It would mean ever so much to me." She blushes and looks down again, worried she had offended the dwarf.
Mar 27, 2017 11:04 am
Inar frowns at Gloins description of the dream A dream or a vision? Or the enemy taunting Gloin.... he seems visibly disturbed by this turn and is in such deep thought over the matter that he doesn't really register when Gilly starts to discuss her cousin's book with Gloin.
Mar 28, 2017 12:51 am
Gloin looks slightly ill-disposed to the charm of the young Hobbit woman, but as the matter is a trifling one he acquiesces with a grunt. His copy of an early draft of the Red Book of Westmarch is placed carefully on his desk while Gilly's gets a quick scrawl in the Angerthas:

https://s3.amazonaws.com/gamersplane/TOR/gloin-name.png

"If there's nothing else? Perhaps you could then be on your way and find my kin?"
OOC:
Strictly speaking this is only 5 years after the Ring was discovered, so the Red Book of Westmarch might not yet be completed -- let alone copied; if we're being true to canon. That said, the source material is unclear here other than we know Bilbo gave the original to Frodo and eventually Frodo gave it to Samwise Gamgee. As a result and because I prefer to say 'yes' as a GM than 'no' I'm rolling with it. I'm certain a draft of the book might be ready and it's quite possible that Gilly was precocious enough to either get a copy or lift a copy for herself. And it's conceivable Bilbo would send an early draft to his fellows. Thus... there we are!
Mar 28, 2017 6:42 am
Inar coughs and bows again "Right you are, times waits on no one. It has been a pleasure to make your acquaintance Lord Gloin, hopefully we will have your cousin back on his way in short order." with a last nod Inar turns and exits the room.
OOC:
Not sure if referring to him as 'lord' would be right or not but Inar would want to give a proper level of respect so seemed appropriate

Robin's mouth twists a bit as he looks sideways at his sister. Not now, he wanted to say to her, but he remained quiet. Not that she would listen to him, anyway! Grateful that Gloin simply signed the book, Robin voiced his agreement with Inar, "Yes, let us be off. We will be back as soon as possible, Master Gloin."

Thanks for indulging me. It wasn't super-important to me, but just a bit of fun.

Business concluded, the four of you are escorted out of the home by Gloin's manservant and now stand upon the steps of his mansion in Lake-town.
OOC:
What plans might y'all have to proceed? You can hoof it, you can get boats and float downriver...
Mar 30, 2017 12:40 am
Robin, being inexperienced in the ways of the adventurer, looks to Inar and Thovetar for how they should proceed. "Well?" He asks, curiously, with a quirked brow.
Mar 30, 2017 7:11 am
"Well, seems we have a quest!" Inar says with a slight spring in his step that has been missing for some time. Looking up at the sky he says to the others "Still quite early in the day, and seems good travelling weather....shall we grab some supplies and get on our way? Unless any of you have business you need to wrap up before we leave?"
Mar 30, 2017 9:28 am
"That seems a very sensible plan," Gilly agrees.
Mar 30, 2017 11:07 am
"Perhaps have a meal before we go," Robin suggests, despite having eaten just a moment ago. "Otherwise, yes, that sounds just fine." He smiles, smoothing his hands down his leather jerkin.

Inar rolls his eyes a bit, the appetite of Hobbit's never ceasing to surprise him "How about we get something extra we can eat on the boats laddie? Really wouldn't be doing to drag our feet if there's people that may need our help"
Mar 30, 2017 11:14 am
Robin looks hesitant, but relents, "I suppose we might as well."
Mar 31, 2017 4:36 pm
OOC:
Was thinking Thovetar had something to add based on some PMs, but I'll roll things along.
Gathering supplies is straightforward. Between the two hobbits and Inar, there's plenty of wealth among you to ensure you're adequately stocked for a journey (even with two Hobbits!). With your supplies acquired, you head down to the docs with Gloin's documents in hand. There, someone is perfectly happy to provide you with a couple of smaller boats for your journey down the River Running -- as Gloin's letter, and his coin, are good in Lake-town.

The time has come to plan your journey so as to remove the most obvious obstacles from your chance of success. After all, people just don't wander into the Wild without a plan. Thovetar has said this countless times. And given he's a Ranger, you assume he knows something of what he speaks about this.

You chat amongst yourselves to determine who will be the Guide, leading the expedition and making the decisions about the route, rest and supplies. A good Guide is wise and has some skill at Survival. Someone should also consider the role of Scout. Scouts set up camp and open new trails, relying on their Stealth and Investigation skills. The Hunter helps ensure you are fed during your journey, using their skill at Survival. Lastly, the Look-out is in charge of keeping watch during the journey and assigning watches overnight. A good look out perceives things clearly.
OOC:
Working through Journeys as described starting on page 164 of Adventures in Middle Earth. Who would like to take which role?
Mar 31, 2017 5:38 pm
OOC:
Well, Inar's not great at any of those skills really, his best are +3 in Survival and Stealth, Perceptions a +1 and Investigation is a fat nothing so The Hunter or the Guide would be where he's best suited.

OOC:
Robin would be best as a Scout, both due to his mentality and skill set. His stealth is a solid +8, and he has a decent +3 Investigation. Also, reminder, Thovetar can take up multiple roles if he's better at them than anyone else. Any role that we leave unattended can be assumed by the Wanderer, if I remember right. We can also have people double up on roles to gain advantage, I believe?

OOC:
Relevant passage:

With the exception of the company’s Guide, more than one Player-hero may be assigned the same task (in other words, there may be more than one character acting as Look-outs, or more heroes going hunting regularly), but normally no character may assume more than one role at the same time (posing as the group’s Hunter AND Scout, for example). If there’s more than one person assigned to a task then nominate a lead Scout, Hunter or Look-out. That character is the one who makes the test and gains advantage from the assistance of the other Player-heroes performing the Help action on that task.

- so you could double up to gain advantage in a role, but you'd not staff another role which would operate at a disadvantage.
- outside of the Wanderer, there isn't an option to take more than one role. Here's the relevant bit from Wanderer:

If you act as a company’s Guide on a journey, you are considered to be assuming all vacant travelling roles (you are considered to ‘fill in’ as the company’s Hunter, Scout and Look-out at the same time, if no other companion is already covering that role).

So only if the Wanderer is the Guide can he or she fill in the spare roles. But this doesn't count towards advantage.
Mar 31, 2017 7:57 pm
OOC:
I can take hunter or guide if you need me to
Mar 31, 2017 9:36 pm
OOC:
I can take Look-Out; not great at that but probably the best place for me to fill in! Gilly has +2 to Perception
Apr 1, 2017 1:31 pm
OOC:
So, if Thovetar has a really good Survival, like above +3, then he could be Guide and Hunter, and then Inar can assist Gilly as Look-Out, giving her Advantage, and Robin can Scout.
Apr 3, 2017 8:12 pm
OOC:
I shall make it so. Thovetar's Survival is +5
After a bit of discussion, you settle into a structure that makes you all feel comfortable. Thovetar -- with his keen survival abilities, will lead the group and provide for the food. Robin can perform as the Scout and Inar and Gilly will double up on Look-out duty, since you'll be skirting the edge of Mirkwood and who knows what can happen. More lookouts just seems like a good idea.

The weather is glorious as you head out from Esgaroth, or Lake-town. So much so, that you're convinced that you will be successful in your journey. You will find Balin and Oin and you will ensure that they will get home with nary a scratch on their head or a hair pulled from a beard. The wind is a slight, warming breeze out of the southeast and the sky is bright and clear. The Lonely Mountain can be seen far to the north with a ring of clouds around its top like a hat -- or a scarf.

This first day the going is quite simple. It's a matter of scooting down the Long Lake towards the Stairs of Girion -- a portage towards the Running River's lower course. Little happens on this part of your journey -- there's the occasional raft being carefully steered by Elves plying their trade with Esgaroth.

Around midday you beach the boats upon the lakeshore to break out a lunch (or a much delayed elevenses as far as Robin and Gilly are concerned). Although you are not far from Lake-town, you nonetheless settle into your roles -- Guide, Look-out, Scout and whatnot. Lunch passes quietly and relatively quickly. Inar is eager to be on your way and begrudges the effort of a fire -- so it's with some grousing that a cold lunch of salted meats, honey cakes and warm beer is your fare. Robin is certain a nice hearty stew would have been wonderful -- but he's convinced to hold off on the stew until dinner and a fire.

Robin was up and packing as soon as Gilly said 'company'. As Thovetar suggests doing some scouting, Robin interjects, "N-n-n-no, I think my sister is right. Let's leave."
Apr 5, 2017 4:48 pm
Inar nods "Discretion would be best so lets try to get loaded and avoid undue notice." he risks a glance in the direction Gilly indicated "Same drill as usual though, if it comes to an engagement with them you two try to stay behind me and Thovetar and help where you can" he finishes as he lifts one of the heavier bundles and moves it towards the boats.

The four of you get to the boats quickly and Inar and Robin are able to hop in and get out into the lake once more without raising a ruckus. Unfortunately, the boat for Thovetar and Gilly is less fortunate as Gilly slips in the water causing a bit of a spash -- catching herself loudly on the gunwale of the small boat. Whomever is working their way down the shoreline catches sight of this and they immediately begin to give chase.

Both Inar and Thovetar work the boats to the best of their ability -- but in the rush, the currents of the lake around this shoreline are difficult to overcome and you are not able to successfully disengage from what now appears to be a small band of highwaymen -- happy enough to loot the well-known wealth of a dwarf and his small beardless children.

OOC:
Sorry for the hiatus. Skiing was busy busy, then I injured myself and I was tired tired. :) Quick Q. If there are generally 2 boats and one is piloted by Inar and the other Thovetar, how would the hobbits split? Or would they?
Apr 18, 2017 5:33 am
OOC:
Robin would be very hesitant to split, but if Gilly or someone else insisted, he would. If it was a non-issue, he'd be with Gilly.
Apr 18, 2017 7:13 am
OOC:
Well we could have most of the gear and supplies loaded onto one of the boats and the other having the 2 hobbits if they feel more comfortable being together. I'm thinking this is something we'd have hammered out in our previous adventures so we'd just travel like that as a default unless there's a specific reason to do things differently
Apr 18, 2017 9:26 am
OOC:
Agreed. That makes sense.
Apr 18, 2017 6:59 pm
OOC:
Makes total sense to me. It will be so. Inar or Thovetar - you wanna claim a preference for 'stuff' or 'hobbits' as your cargo? Or should we rationalize this based on the fact that Thovetar is the Guide and therefore that means he'd more likely have people (or stuff)?

OOC:

Apr 18, 2017 10:04 pm
Inar is able to quietly scramble into his boat and push away from shore -- but unfortunately Gilly's struggle to get in is either complicated by Thovetar's piloting or complicates it -- and he finds himself unable to push the boat entirely to a safe distance from the shore before a group of rugged looking thugs stumble upon your makeshift camp.

"A dwarf trader with one guard and a couple o' kids!" one of them points out. Weapons are drawn and they make their way, spashing into the shallow water to capture the boat with Thovetar and the 'children'.
OOC:
Let's go ahead and roll initiative and while that's ongoing, I'll do some research and bone up on my 5E combat and flesh out the encounter.

Thovetar draws his longsword as the men wade toward the boat, a stern look on his face. You've got a bow in the hands of that child?" they say, and "Ooo. I'm so scared! I'm ready to run all the way to Gondor!" They laugh roughly and continue towards you.

Thovetar's swing is ungainly and causes the boat to wobble unfortunately. Seeing their colleague engaged with the bandits, both Inar and Gilly let fly with arrows and two of them promptly sprout from Teocyn. His eyes widen as the child lands a hard hit on him and he slows pace and begins to fall back towards the shoreline, clearly unwell.
OOC:
Due to the rocking of the boat, next round attacks from the boat (Inar and Robin) will be at a disadvantage. Teocyn takes 9 points of damage which leaves him with 2 more. Robin -- you had a draw-and-attack, so you can trigger if you'd like on one of the other three candidates - as this is coincident with Thovetar's current attack -- you do not yet suffer disadvantage.
May 20, 2017 11:14 am
Robin unfortunately hesitates as an arrow flies past. The moment for his strike missed, he simply shouts, "We aren't children! We are Hobbits! And... and specifically, we are Hobbits who know how to fight, as well as any other, and.. and so you should leave!"

I've lost a little of my place in things -- but will call the prior round, your ability to act while they closed. So this is the first real round where the enemy can take action against you.
Robin's words ring loud and clear across the quiet lapping waters of the lake. The bandits before you stop in their tracks and to a man they show fear. "Hobbits! Everyone knows they're cursed!" Weapons are up -- but now, instead of menacing, they seem defensive. For the poor Teocyn, his colleagues begin to give him a wide berth -- seeing as he's been hit by a HOBBIT ARROW.

Teocyn pales more than he had before, swooning. Seemingly convinced of his impending death. "C-c-can you remove your curse from the arrow?"
OOC:
Inar - do you want to hold on that shot or retcon an action/statement?

Robin very nearly corrected the thieves' misconception before, in his hesitation, the moment is lost to Gilly's offer. Holding his tongue, he looks nervously back to Gilly with an expression that says "What are you saying?"
Jun 7, 2017 3:38 am
Teocyn appears conflicted -- but the opportunity to have the curse lifted is enough to cause him to set down his weapons. His three companions however are obviously disinclined to give up their hard-earned weapons. They also make sure to give Teocyn a wide berth and once they're sufficiently far away they're certain a Hobbit-cursed arrow cannot hit them, they turn and tromp off, leaving Teocyn alone with the four of you.
Jun 7, 2017 9:32 am
Gilly reaches into her pack and pulls out a small bag, which she tosses to Teocyn. "This is the antidote. Mix it into boiling water at sunset, and drink the whole cup."
Jun 8, 2017 3:56 am
Teocyn catches the bag and runs after his colleagues. Leaving the four of you in your boats with a few weapons cast off near your fire...
OOC:
25 XP apiece for that encounter. What next? Care to complete your lunch? Or is discretion the better part of valor?
Jun 8, 2017 9:27 am
Gilly smiles with satisfaction, "Well, I think that went fairly well, for our first battle." She looks at her comrades, "Does someone tall want to go fetch the weapons? Even if we cannot use them, we can ensure they're put to better use by someone else." She glances down the shore in the direction the bandits went, "I'm not confident fear and superstition will keep them away for long, so we're best to get on our way soonest."
Jun 8, 2017 11:06 am
"Agreed," Robin says, to his sister's suggestions, "We should be leaving, with haste."

Robin sets about to make sure the traveling packs and bags are firmly secured. After a moment of pause, he looks to the other companions and reassures them, "And Hobbits are not cursed."
Jun 8, 2017 5:03 pm
"Gilly, I can go grab the weapons if you need me to."
Jun 8, 2017 5:47 pm
Inar paddles his boat back to the shoreline as quickly as he can before hissing to the others "Be quick about it, we may have seen them off now but a bit of distance may cause them to regrow their spines a wee bit!"
Jun 9, 2017 4:26 am
You quickly gather the discarded weapons -- saving them for some other use and set back out in your boats. As a result, lunch is some cold traveling rations that Inar finds vaguely satisfying, Thovetar is all too familiar with and the Hobbits both find incredibly wanting (though this is not their first time having eaten them... but familiarity in this case breeds some contempt). As you continue south on the Long Lake you begin to hear a quiet roar that increases in volume as you make your way south.

Seeing as you aren't completely unfamiliar with the area, you are aware that the lake exits south into the Running River down some high waterfalls that are pretty enough -- but not designed to be ridden over in boats. The Stairs of Girion will take you down to the river -- probably in the morning. This evening it's likely camp at the piers just before the falls -- or amongst the company of the men who work the Stair.

OOC:
Moving along -- it's not critical
You catch sight of the telltale sign of a school of fish feeding along your path -- but by the time you notice it and then think about what to do and the Hobbits get to the point of securing a fishing pole -- the school has moved on -- closer to shore and out of the way of your path.

As the day begins to end -- late in the day this far north at this time of year -- you hear the roaring of the falls quite loudly as you settle in to a pier to disembark and negotiate the movement of your boats down the stairs of Girion. You're greeted by a middle-aged Man who identifies himself as Lowell. "It is good to see you kind sirs.. and lady." The latter is a bit late as he recognizes that Gilly is a female Hobbit.

Lowell directs you to get your boats onto a trackway in preparation for taking them down in the morning. This leaves you with the need to find a place to camp -- either close to the lake shore, or perhaps a seat around the fire. In the course of preparation Lowell does indicate that the "lads" would be eager to hear from some such as those so brave to venture south by boat!
Jun 13, 2017 9:20 am
Gilly looks at her brother with pleading eyes...clearly wanting to join the lads.
Jun 13, 2017 11:15 am
Robin looks hesitant, eager to avoid much social contact. Gilly would need looking after, though, so he must follow, and he didn't have the heart to withhold her this small thing. "Oh, alright, Gilly," he concedes, following her once his camp and belongings are set up and secured.
Jun 13, 2017 1:08 pm
Inar follows the two hobbits towards the group of 'lads' and takes a seat just away from the main group, where he can keep an eye on this group of strangers but not be part of the festivities.

Your group is happily welcomed at the fire where a fair number of younger men - laborers and fisher-type folks - sit around working on a common meal. In the waning daylight a small number of simple huts can be seen -- clearly where these men live while plying their trade here. They are all Lakemen of Esgaroth, and thus familiar with the area. But as you sit and the make room, especially for the still-rarely-seen Hobbits, they both burble with excitement and hush with expectation in ripples.

Lowell notes, "We do not yet see significant trade or travel down the Stair... and it's unusual to see a group such as you fine adventurers here rather than a merchant caravan. Might you have any stories you can share to help us pass the meal?"
Jun 15, 2017 12:23 am
Gilly stands with a wide grin, "It just so happens we do. Have you heard the tale of the hobbit and the three trolls?"
Jun 15, 2017 2:09 am
Robin smiles and sits back, preparing his pipe on his belly as he listens in to the tale he's likely heard a hundred times.
Jun 16, 2017 3:24 am
There's a general murmur around the fire. "No indeed! A Hobbit and three trolls? Surely it's a chase?!" One of them pipes up, gently ribbing Gilly and Robin.
Jun 17, 2017 11:20 am
Gilly smiles and gestures to her body in self-deprecation, "T'would be a short chase, were that so."

Her voice changes, taking on the timbre and nuance of a skilled storyteller, "The night was dark and still, and the small hobbit stood along at the edge of the path through the woods. His friends had disappeared into the night, one by one, to investigate a flickering fire they could see through the trees. Only Bilbo was left, frightened and alone. Yet his loyalty gave him bravery enough to venture into the trees after them..."

She proceeds to tell the tale, only slightly embellished, together with voices and gestures, her eyes alight the whole time with delight.

Robin could easily have grown tired of the tales about Bilbo; he had heard them told so often, back home. However, he could never grow tired of Gilly's storytelling. The big smile on his face indicated as much as he sat back, forming a hazy cloud of pipe smoke around his head.

Around the fire, the young lads listen carefully to the story. At the end they are entertained, somewhat amazed and a little confused. "How did he imitate their voices then? Is he a ventril... uh, can he throw his voice? Can all Hobbits do that?" asks one of the men. Another says, "No, you have it all wrong -- one of the Dwarves was doing that!"

Lowell swings by as the conversation burbles away and ensures each of you have a pot of filling, but not exceptional, stew -- sharing in the meal they've prepared. It's heavy on fish, given the proximity to the Lake and the bread hunks you get are not at all stale.
Jun 20, 2017 2:00 am
"A good telling, Gilly," Robin says with a smile.
Jun 20, 2017 8:30 am
Inar smiles to himself whilst listening to Gilly tell her story, he'd never admit it but he's grown quite fond of the hobbit's tales.

As Lowell hands him the bowl of stew he thanks him. Even though he isn't fond of fish he appreciates a hot meal after having spent so much time over the last few years on the run and hungry. He shifts his position whilst eating, keeping slightly removed from the group so he can keep a watchful eye on all figures present.

There's a slight rumbling in the brush nearby -- the hobbits and Thovetar pick it up quite readily over the din of the evening meal and the crackling of the fire. Moments later, another dwarf sallies forth from the bush and spots you all gathered around the fire. For his part, Fror sees several huts -- and a fire, and several Men, a Dwarf and a couple of children -- or perhaps Hobbits gathered around the fire. They're eating something that doesn't smell half bad -- and the warmth of the fire might still be welcome on this spring night.

Robin's reaction is dulled somewhat by his thoroughly enjoyable smoke. He quirks a brow at the dwarf, but does not immediately speak up, wondering if this is another one of their acquaintances' comrades.
Jun 22, 2017 10:19 am
As the dwarf emerges from the brush Inar relaxes slightly, and only slightly, sliding the sword he half drew back into it's sheath but keeping his hand close to the hilt for a moment. Studying the other dwarf he begins to have a niggling feeling he's seen him before...
Jun 22, 2017 9:32 pm
The newly arrived dwarf wears only travellers clothes - a brown cloak and leggings with bright green trim and thread. Behind his light-brown, long, wavy beard, his faded green shirt is low-cut in the front with loose lacing, barely holding back a thick bush of brown, wiry chest hair.

He carries a large, heavy-looking backpack and clearly bears an array of weapons (currently sheathed or stowed for walking), including a large, dangerous-looking war-mattock. In-hand at the moment, however, is merely a well-loved walking stick, beautifully carved and adorned with silver inlay, depicting an angular, abstract visage of a dwarf with a very long beard. A single dwarven rune is also inlaid in the wood over the dwarf face.
Omenstar sent a note to mcneils5,falryx
"Frór son of Grór, at your service," he says, and bows deeply - his long beard brushing the toes of his boots, "Would you share the warmth and fellowship of your fire with a fellow traveller?" While scanning the company, his eyes fall on Inar and he adds "The Men of Esgaroth still look on Durin's folk as friends, last I heard."

Inar nods at Frór "Well met traveller, you'll certainly get no objections from me" he says gesturing for Frór to join them. "I am Inar Stoutfoot"

Inar studies the figure closely, the feeling a familiarity growing even more as Frór gave his name. Something from long ago Inar muses to himself When I was just a lad maybe?
Jun 22, 2017 11:37 pm
Thovétar glances over at the dwarf. "Well met. I am Thovétar of Gondor, at your service."
Jun 23, 2017 12:02 am
Gilly stands and bows with a flourish, "Gilly Took, at your service."
Jun 23, 2017 12:14 am
Frór greets each member of the company in turn. At Inar his eyes at first grow narrow with a contemplative squint, then open wide and bright as he exclaims, "Why, you're a Stoutfoot, you say! We must be practically cousins! My father, Grór's sister married a Stoutfoot and some of her family was said to have come to Erebor - or thereabouts - it seems to have gotten more and more difficult to keep track of the Stoutfoot side of the family in recent years..." he trails off, as if trying to remember something.

Then, in a hoarse whisper he continues close to Inar's ear, "Have you heard about Balin and Oin? A raven brought me ill news as I was wandering in pursuit of local bandits - and in pursuit of my Oath!" then he finishes more loudly again, "Aye! Ever in pursuit of my Oath..."
Jun 23, 2017 5:44 am
The Lakemen welcome Fror easily enough -- one group of adventurers is unusual enough -- but a second (even if it is but a group of one) is practically unheard of. There's a quick jostling as seating is rearranged to make room, and Fror is provided with some of the hearty fish stew.

"What's that about ill news?" one of the men ask -- ready for another story.
Jun 23, 2017 12:22 pm
Inar nods and thinks to himself Ofcourse, that's why he looks familiar. "Ah yes, I remember it was old old Farnil who married your aunt....that was a good day" he smiles fondly as he remembers a time when life was a little simpler "Our family have had to relocate a few times and go where we are needed" he shrugs after a moments thought "it's been a few years since I've seen another member of my family to be honest...." Inar seems about to say something else but then glances about the others and decides better of it. "Yes we had heard something about that business, best not to speak of such things though" he glances at Frór meaningfully, trying to suggest too many strange ears are here to talk about such matters.
Jun 23, 2017 1:24 pm
"Ah, um...yes..." Frór begins to answer the Lakemen's question, but he hears Inar's warning in his ear and the accompanying cautious glance, so he just awkwardly ends with, "...just personal, family business. I haven't seen this cousin of mine for a very, very long time, you see." He shifts uncomfortably in his seat and fills his mouth with stew to avoid speaking more of the matter.
Jun 24, 2017 11:01 am
Though he managed enough effort to raise a hand in greeting to the Dwarf, Robin quickly found that he'd grown immensely tired. Robin's eyes have since closed, and his pipe now sags between his lips. His fingers interlock over his belly as he lies back and snoozes peacefully. There is a soft smile on his face.
Jun 25, 2017 7:29 pm
"I'm going to sleep for now. Let me know if anything gappens." He then sets off for his bedroll.
Jun 26, 2017 5:24 am
The Lakemen relent at the weak retreat from Inar and Fror, but remain jocular all the same. As the night wears on -- they begin to follow in Thovetar's footsteps (figuratively speaking) and seek their own beds. The fire burns down to a safe level and the night wears on.
OOC:
Any last thoughts before morning?
Jun 26, 2017 6:18 am
Grateful for the stew, Frór offers to the Lakemen to take a turn on watch.
Jun 27, 2017 5:31 am
Fror is permitted to watch -- although the Lakemen are a little lackadazical about it -- and encourage him to just get some rest. It's been some time since they've had any trouble -- and there are more than enough of them, in their opinion, to fend off the small band or two of ne'er-do-wells who may be about.

Morning comes with the chirping of birds and some hard bread and warmed fish soup -- leftovers from the night before. Breakfast is uneventful and your boats are ported down the Stair of Girion for a modest fee that you easily pay given a few coins from Gloin to make the journey south with good speed.

The sun shines and the Long Marshes reach out before you. Even with the sun -- here at the base of the Stair, the land ahead looks dim and foreboding. Fror offers to join the four of you on your journey -- and given his drive to aid his kin, and his familial relations (if somewhat distant to Inar) you are inclined to bring him along. Another stout mattock seems like a wise addition looking at the marshes ahead...
OOC:
Fror -- we probably need to figure out what role you're covering on the journey. Likely you can/should double up as a Lookout given your skills.

The wan sunlight over the Long Marshes do not look welcoming to Frór's eyes - indeed, the landscape ahead is almost eerie somehow. "I'll help with keeping a lookout in our travels," offers the tall dwarf, "I have the eyes of a hawk and the ears of a fox!" He clambers aboard one of the boats and uses his ornate, yet sturdy, walking stick to help shove off from the shore...
OOC:
ouch! bad rolls!
...but he stubs his toe as he's getting settled in the boat, which is an awkward experience for him. It really hurts, distracting him from his lookout duties, and he takes it as a bad omen in combination of the ill-looking landscape ahead...

Inar takes the opportunity in the morning to fill Fror in on their task, making sure they are far enough away to not be overheard by the workers here abouts "Sounds like we're on the same path laddie, seems to me that us joining together would improve all of our chances....if you'll have us that is?" getting a positive response Inar helps with getting the boats down and then rearranges the load amongst the boats to make room for the other dwarf.

"...Aye," says Frór on hearing Inar's account of their quest, "when I heard the raven's news I knew it couldn't be ignored, but I'm not sure how far I would have fared on my own. Indeed, I'm glad for the company, and to have companions to share the errand with - and to find a relative among them! Who would've guessed? If it is Fate, then I welcome it! But at the very least, I'll take it as a good omen. Perhaps we'll find old Balin soon - likely at a roadside tavern or friendly house where the ale was so good that he just couldn't leave, eh?"

Then Frór laughs heartily, forgetting his lookout duty for a time, and just glad to be among good company whom he can trust.

During your first day from the stair of Girion, you move slowly, keeping an eye out for what might possibly be signs of passage of two Dwarves, or indeed -- the Dwarves themselves. The waters of the river move languidly here, as the marshy terrain gives it plenty of places to go and diffuse its momentum. Thankfully, it is still early spring, and the air, though pleasant, is not stiflingly warm. So there's that at least. Gilly, Inar and Fror look out upon the fetid swamp that is the Long Marshes and they cannot help but wonder how they will possible find Balin in such a place. They worry to, somewhat, that their journey is not only potentially fraught with peril, but possibly pointless.
OOC:

Thovetar notices a small grouping of water lilies tucked near a tuft of marsh weed. He has some knowledge of the plants of Middle Earth, luckily, and knows that the water lily is more than just a pretty flower that opens during the day and closes at night.
OOC:
Should you desire to recover them and have them for use, you may do so -- it'll take an Athletics roll to manuever the boat where you want, and a dexterity (or other appropriate skill) roll from a passenger to recover them without trouble. Both are at DC13 - though a sufficiently good or bad Athletics roll can modify the DEX DC.

Yestereve I joked we would find him at a Friendly House or roadside tavern, but today - after seeing this endless, trackless, miserable marsh before us - I wonder how any lost thing could ever be found in such a place. Balin, my lord, where are you?"

But at the sound of Robin speaking the words, 'honeycake' and 'dwarven' Frór's ears perk up. "Steer us there to give the small one a helping hand, won't you, Inar?" urges the son of Grór.

Inar finds himself feeling equal parts joy at being in the presence of a kind man after so many years and the creeping feeling that Frór may end up a target just for being close to Inar. Something to worry about another day he thinks to himself, only paying half a mind to Frór's thoughts We have a job to be on with his thoughts still filled with a lingering darkness. His line of thinking is interrupted as Robin calls out, he nods to Frór "Right you are laddie" and starts trying to maneuver their boat closer into where the hobbit is indicating.

Fror remains behind at camp as Robin and Gilly head off towards the western edge of the boggy marsh towards the trees that demark the edge of Mirkwood. Though the going is not easy, nothing ill befalls either of the Hobbits as they hop and skip from tussock to tussock and splash through the occasional muddy bank. Awaiting them at the edge is a group of four Elves. One of them steps forth.

"What brings you to Mirkwood?" he asks bluntly.

As she straightens, her normally cheerful face is serious, "We have no intent of coming into your domain without your permission, though we would very much appreciate any council you could give."
Jul 12, 2017 11:45 am
Robin looks nervously between the Elves and Gilly. With his arm concealed behind his sister, he takes hold of her cloak and gives it a subtle tug. In even his minimal experience outside the Shire, he has quickly learned that Elves tend to not like Dwarves, and Robin fears testing these particular Elves. "Gilly," he says quietly, with a cautionary tone.
Jul 12, 2017 5:20 pm
A few crashing noises and what you can only assume are Dwarven curse words are followed shortly by an out of breath Inar "Don't run off like that, you could run into....oh.." he says, a bit lost for words before bowing to the elves respectfully "Inar Stoutfoot, at your service"

With Inar's arrival, it's like the last piece of a checker board falling into place for the elf before you. With a sigh that speaks volumes he says, "I am Galion. I am bid to watch the borders of Mirkwood for my liege. Not, however, for a rag-tag band of meddling Hobbits and Dwarves."

He scoffs, "I've known Hobbits were trouble since I first laid eyes on that one years back. Fancy talking but sneaky." He looks over to Inar and off to Fror, "And the faults of Dwarves are known to all -- and are many."
Jul 14, 2017 11:28 am
"Beggin' your pardon, Galion. Sir." Robin rubs his hands together a bit nervously and gives a quick bow, "We don't mean to intrude."

"As said, we're searching for some fellows."

Out of sight and from beyond the trees and bushes, near the bank of the river where the companions pulled ashore, Frór's voice bellows out after his fleet-footed friends, "Oy! Where're you off to? Bring back some firewood, eh! And some mushrooms too, if you see any! Don't mind me! I'll be fine! I'll just wait here with the gear and prepare our camp!" Then, after a momentary pause and some inaudible muttering, "...And don't go tradin' yer nice lilies to no Elves fer nothin'!"
Aug 13, 2017 3:16 pm
Galion looks askance at Gilly Took. "We are quite capable at defending our Realm and as I recall the objects of your search were headed south -- well past what we consider our borders. There is a reason, after all, that our borders are where they are. The Mountains of Mirkwood and Dol Guldur still exert an influence here despite the relative peace we enjoy. It is a foolhardy Dwarf who believes the Old Road is the way forward even in these times."

He considers, "I suppose I could tell you what I know. But I must know what you know in order to proceed."
OOC:
I'm still trying to get the hang of the way audiences works in this version of ME. From the way I read it you pass the DC of 10 which would have him tell you to go fly a kite, which he's kind of done a couple times, but failed a DC of 20 to get his actual assistance (your net roll is a 15 because of the presence of 2 hobbits and a dwarf). So, I'm trying to thread the needle between reluctant assistance and outright hostility.

Gilly considers a moment, then relays what they know so far. She ends with, "And as we descended into these lands, I felt a dark presence. Nothing I can put my finger on, mind...just a feeling."
Aug 17, 2017 12:25 am
Robin looks to Gilly with some concern on his face as she speaks this last part. He does not interrupt however, not wanting to ruin what aid they may receive from Galion.
Aug 17, 2017 10:18 pm
Inar glowers at Galion but swallows his pride and keeps quiet before he makes matters worse.
Aug 18, 2017 3:57 am
Galion absorbs Gilly's story with a thoughtful look. "Well, we know it was Balin and Oin -- we are familiar with them and no great love is lost between us. The invitation to the Eagles is an interesting twist -- I have no doubt that should any bauble have accompanied the invitation then Balin and Oin certainly would not have sought to traverse through the Woodland Realm. They have proven to prefer to hoard what they can rather than justly share it."

This is a refrain that each of you has heard one way or another -- either from Bilbo's stories or around the halls of Erebor.

"Still, you have told me what you know. I do not know a great deal, but I do know where we last saw them. Perhaps they have left something behind in their campsite that you would find to be a clue." Here, Galion proceeds to provide reasonable directions to find what he claims is the campsite for Balin and Oin before the Elves lost track of them, themselves. Having given the information, he and his cohort step back into the forest of Mirkwood and quickly disappear among the trees without even providing a "fare well". The three of you are left standing at the border of the forest and the marsh.
Aug 18, 2017 6:43 am
"Oy!" calls Frór impatiently from the distant campsite at the shore, "Found any firewood yet?"

With everyone filled in, there's a little anticipation in the air. Minus the wrapper -- actual evidence of Balin and Oin's movement has been few and far between. Eager to be on your way, you find the coming night a little oppressive -- like it's perfectly timed to delay you when you're /just/ ready to find your quarry. Based on Galion's description -- you need to sprint a little further downriver, a few miles north of where the Rotting River meets the Running River.

Looking at your map,

https://s3.amazonaws.com/gamersplane/AiME/AIME-BalinsCamp2.PNG

...you figure yourselves around the blue marker and estimate Balin's camp is located at the red. It's a little over 20 miles -- so an early start is required to make the distance before nightfall. Come morning, you do not tarry on an expansive breakfast -- and in fact you are up and at it before a civilized breakfast-time should even be considered...

Your boats are sturdy and you set forth, eager to speed to the site. However, the lands here are more depressing than those you've meandered through thus far and Galion's dismissal of the fate of the Dwarves hangs heavy on your minds.

As you work your way downstream, first Inar's then Fror's boats get stuck in the muddy fens of the Long Marsh. In order to dislodge the boat, the occupants must hop out, and move the boat in the cold, muddy water. With the failing light, it's difficult to make anything out.

Do you choose to make camp and hold tight for the night or continue your search as you can even with the failing light?
Sep 1, 2017 7:55 am
"This looks like it laddies" Inar says roughly, trying to keep the signs of how tired he is out of his voice "As much as I'd like to press on we're liable to miss things in this light, might be best to find a spot to camp until morning"
Sep 1, 2017 9:20 am
Gilly nods tiredly.

"Thank you for the rowing, master dwarves," Robin speaks graciously, nodding his head along with the plan to make camp.

"My boots are soaked all through and my feet are freezing! Drat that old Balin! Why'd he have to go gittin' hiself lost?!" complains a grouchy, tired Frór, "My heart says to push on, but you're all wiser than that, I see. Mayhap a good supper and a night's rest will bring a brighter morning. So, what's for supper?"
Sep 6, 2017 2:54 am
OOC:
I hope those of you in the US had a good 3-day weekend!
Setting up camp goes easily enough -- even with you a bit more tired than you were before. You're certain once daylight breaks, you'll be able to find Balin's camp with the information given to you by Galion. As the night settles around you the marshes come alive with all manner of croaking and annoying beasts announcing their presence.

Gilly's innate curiosity about things has her looking about into the darkness from time to time. And as your campfire settles down to a more pleasant glow, she catches sight of the occasional flickering light in the middle-distance.
Sep 6, 2017 4:31 am
By this point, Robin is fast asleep against a tree, with a belly full of food.
Sep 6, 2017 8:59 am
Gilly is intensely curious, but knows better than to wander off in the dark on her own. She points out the lights to anyone still awake, and carefully draws an arrow in the dirt indicating the direction she saw them, so they can explore in the morning.
Sep 6, 2017 4:46 pm
Frór, still attempting to proficiently execute his duties as look-out, peers intently at the flickering light, as pointed out by Gilly.

"Maybe our own campfire looks something like that, eh? Could it be other travellers?" he half-rhetorically asks the hobbit. Then, much more loudly, he calls out with a loud shout towards the flickering light, "Oy there! Traveller! Why not join us by our fire?"
Sep 7, 2017 1:23 am
The flickering lights are quiet and do not respond to Fror's entreaty or Robin's snores. It would appear that if you're like to figure out what's there now, then you'll have to hoof it over there.
Sep 7, 2017 5:31 am
"Well drat! Why don't they just join us? I'll go get 'em and bring 'em 'ere. Any yous wants ta come with?" asks Frór as he hoists his mattock over his shoulder and prepares to hoof it over there.
Sep 7, 2017 9:23 am
Gilly holds up a hand, "I don't think that is wise, friend dwarf. Not all lights are friendly."
Sep 7, 2017 5:48 pm
Inar nods as Gilly speaks, his dozing having been interrupted by the commotion. "Aye, if they aren't bothering us I'd say best to leave them be" he says whilst staring at the lights, his hand unconsciously resting on his sword hilt.
Sep 7, 2017 7:39 pm
"I see. Wiser again, you are," agrees Frór, "Well, I'll keep watch as best I can," as he settles in for the night.
Sep 8, 2017 3:41 am
With that settled, you settle into a routine of sleeping, following your usual watch pattern. The lights in the distance make no effort to come any closer to your own fire -- nor do they offer any encouragement or calls to join them at their fire. In the end, as dawn approaches, your sentry notices the lights die down.

Morning arrives early enough - each of you having rested sufficiently well enough to restore your energy levels. The sunlight shines against the edges of the Mountains of Mirkwood and their foothills -- not twenty miles distant to the west. The air is cool still, given the spring weather, but you sense the marshes eagerness to close in and give a home to crushing humidity.

It is a patch of dry land, rising to the west of the river course a few miles north of where a stream that descends from the Mountains of Mirkwood joins the Running River.

Taking up his ornate walking stick, Frór idly scratches dwarfish runes in the dirt around the "camp": O, Lord Balin, whither hast thou departed?

Looking at his handiwork, Frór thinks it seems a little melodramatic, but he doesn't have the internal words to actually describe it that way to himself, so he just looks at the runes quizzically and discomfitedly, yet not willing to erase them...
Sep 13, 2017 2:27 am
Gilly and Inar take a look around the campsite, checking sight-lines and feeling for the out-of-placeness that a camp makes as a pair of Dwarves go about their business. Thovetar and Robin take a more... thorough approach, carefully looking at different aspects of the camp and trying to deduce what business happened here.

Fror doesn't make it far before he's reminded that he's in the middle of a marshy swamp, and it'll be back to the boats to find further signs of the Dwarves, likely.
Sep 13, 2017 5:54 pm
After getting a soaker a few strides into the muck...

"Right then! Back to the boats we go!"
Sep 14, 2017 4:36 am
Robin can't help but grin at the Dwarf's charm, following after him to the boats.

Thovetar considers the statements and adds his own color, "By my judgment, they didn't sleep here. Something spooked them and they moved on after hiding this." He shows an ivory jewel box. It is intricately carven with several images of regal-looking birds. He makes to hand it off to Inar, given it's clearly of Dwarven manufacture and he suspects Erebor would prefer to have it in the hands of one of its kin.

Sep 15, 2017 4:37 am
The box doesn't have any particular mystery to it as Inar examines it. He suspects the carved birds are eagles -- the great Eagles of the Misty Mountains, no less. It opens easily enough and the light of the day seems caught and multiplied ten-fold as it the contents in the box flash and sparkle. As Inar and Fror adjust to the light, they see inside a written and illuminated parchment. It is rolled up and wound around with a fine necklace of twisted gold wire connected to a precious stone, the size of a fist. It is snowy in color and its countless facets make the box seem to shine with an inner light.

Gilly is unimpressed by the pretty stone, but the rest of the Fellowship look at it with a bit of lust in their hearts. It is a kingly gift, and it's easy to imagine at least a dozen uses or places to put it so that it could be admired for long hours at a warm fire.

Inar nods as he reads the note "This is the invitation to the king of the Eagles and that" he points to the gem "is a gift to go along with it" he thinks for a moment before folding the note back into the necklace and closing it inside the box once more. Inar's face is dark as he ponders the closed box "This was Balin's charge, I cannot believe he would have left it behind willingly and abandoned his duty. Either he was taken from here or believed it was safer leaving it."
Sep 19, 2017 6:58 pm
"Where do we go from here then?" asks Frór, "deeper into the mucky forest on foot, or do we keep floating south, skirting the eves of this dark wood? If Old Balin was to bring this gift to the king of eagles, then he wouldda kept heading south, right? The big bird king lives over in the Misty Mountains somewhere, don't he? So then Old Balin, he'd go around the south edge of this dread forest and come back up north to the eagle king's house around the long way, right? Lord Balin wouldn't actually go inside the forest? Right...?"
Sep 20, 2017 7:01 am
Robin only crosses his arms and frowns with uncertainty.
Sep 20, 2017 7:52 am
"Our task is to find Balin, we need to press on with that unless we find proof of what happened to him at the very least. I doubt he would have pressed on with his mission without the message and gift for the king of the Eagles" he thinks for a moment "Perhaps now would be a good time to look into what was making those lights."
Sep 20, 2017 8:45 am
Bouncing with excitement thinking about the King of the Eagles, Gilly is brought back to the seriousness of their mission.

"Yes, let's. We know they went south, so we can always pick up their trail again later."
Sep 20, 2017 2:45 pm
"Well, if the folk carrying those lights waylaid or interfered with Lord Balin, then let's have at them!" exclaims Frór as if he had a sudden revelation. The son of Grór looks around for Gilly's markers, picks up his gear and walking stick and immediately heads in the indicated direction.
Sep 20, 2017 6:01 pm
The lights from the evening past evening are a little bit of a backtrack -- you know that Balin's path would have taken him south to the Old Forest Road -- and that's still quite a few miles distant. You're able to meander through the marsh, staying to solid ground, until you reach a small pool of stagnant water. At first blush, there's no particular sign of anything interest. The odor of the pool is reasonably foul, and the reeds that sprout from it look sickly and twisted -- like much of the Long Marsh.

There's also no sign of any tracks into or out of here that show obvious movement.

As you all scan about -- some with greater efficacy than others -- Robin takes note of the strange way that the languid waters of the marsh move around something in the middle distance. Curiosity piqued, he pushed closer until he spots what looks like a boat -- partially submerged and damaged. It looks to be a small boat of Dwarven-make and appears to have suffered some kind of attack -- as if something damaged it with fangs or claws. A few disturbed tufts of grass suggest to the Hobbit that the Dwarves abandoned their boat and struck deeper into the marsh -- towards the Old Road and the eaves of Mirkwood.

"They were here," Robin says, teeth clacking on his pipe as he grips it in his mouth. His hands roam over the small boat he'd found, his words accompanied by a hazy loud of pipeweed, "This is theirs. But they left it." He looks around, his eyes tracking various signs before he wipes his hands on his vest and steps in the direction of the Old Road. He carefully draws his pipe from his mouth and, with his free hand, points a finger deeper into the marsh, "That way, by my estimation."

"Right then, let's be following them then" Inar says before he starts to make his way into the swamp in the direction Robin indicated giving one last curious glance to some of the birds roosting nearby.

As the trees pull in closer and closer, the going gets a little more difficult -- and your minds are on your mission.

Robin comes up short with an "oh!" just as Gilly, Inar and Fror find themselves in a mass of vines reaching to entangle them from above. Robin recognizes this as "gallows-weed" a strange plant that will attempt to constrict the life out of its victims and then.. well.. eat them!

Fror, caught up in the vines, thrashes about with his hand axes -- but to no avail. Although he's able to bat at the vines, they move around and make it difficult for the edges to take a bite out of this noxious weed. Robin, to his credit, dashes in and begins to hack away at the plant, and while he makes some inroads, it remains quite mobile and quite agitated, dodging Gilly's own efforts with her shortsword.

Inar -- choosing the direct route, manages to haul Fror out by the back of his tunic.

The weeds, now fully awakened to your presence, seem keen to keep trying. Fror's own plant makes a go for the dwarf again. The other plants nearby -- the three that were foiled -- also lean into each of the Fellowship, attempting to reassert control over the situation.

Rescuing Gilly and assaulting the plant that attacked her moves you out of immediate range of two of the nasty plants -- and your concerted efforts result in pieces of gallows-weed flying hither, tither and yon. A particularly large piece is flung towards Gilly, who ducks, but as a result, manages to miss landing a scathing blow on the vicious flora. Still, when all is said and done that specimen has been thoroughly whacked -- and it no longer twitches, or harasses Gilly. It looks properly pruned.

The other plant you're in range of reaches towards Fror and tries to grab hold of him... In his fury, he steps too close and finds himself constricted, once more, by one of the plants!

Giving the gallows-weed a good, wide berth -- you continue forward on your search for the missing Dwarves. In due course, you begin to come across some low, tumbled stone -- as if there were a village or town here long ago and it has fallen into ruin. Here and there you come across stretches of discarded bones. They appear to be of different ages -- some newer than others.

Fror: before accounting for the impact of Fury.
Inar, alas, can discern no thing of particular interest about the bones other than, well, they are bones. Gilly and Robin, however are able to identify that the bones have a variety of ages -- some are quite old, while others might only be days or weeks old. There's not something particularly fresh and Dwarf-sized. The bones themselves show signs of having been gnawed upon.
Oct 13, 2017 7:31 am
Robin's quiet is disturbed by an audible gulp before he speaks, "I think something feeds here, and has been for some time. But, some of these are none too old."
Oct 16, 2017 9:22 am
"Let's be careful, then, but keep moving," Gilly says as she carefully steps through the ruins.
Oct 17, 2017 1:58 am
A short while later -- you've had time for a brief stop and a snack -- you find your way deeper into the ruins and a large, dark pool. Here, the ruins are more prominent. The remains of a great marble arch can be seen on a distant shore of the pool, still holding a massive wooden gate, with the other walls of that building now crumbled into the surrounding mud. There's a croaking sound coming from the nearby treetops, as if some of the local birdlife is underwhelmed or alarmed at your presence.
Oct 17, 2017 6:07 am
Robin will navigate around the dark pool, toward the arch, careful of where he places his bare feet.
Oct 18, 2017 2:49 am
Walking around the pool and being careful not to place his feet where he feels they don't belong is straightforward enough. Robin is soon in front of the arch with its wooden gate. The gate is in surprisingly good shape for what is obviously a ruined town or city of another time.

Swimming around, Inar's able to find the base of the pool -- it's quite shallow, and there's some form of underground tunnel or entrance. Surmising that is where his fellows have headed, he swims a short distance down the tunnel and then finds himself emerging from the water onto a series of crumbling steps leading from the waterlogged tunnel into an underground room.

Robin, Gilly and Fror are here, asleep.

With a little gentle shaking, it's straightforward to awaken Gilly -- and subsequently Fror.
Nov 2, 2017 3:03 pm
As they're waking the others Inar tells Robin about the music "It was like you were sleepwalking, I couldn't dissuade you from plunging into the pool and before I knew it the others had followed ya" his voice still a low rumble. "If Balin stumbled across this same peril he could be down here somewhere....can't say I relish spending much time down here but we need to investigate just in case he's here"
Nov 2, 2017 3:35 pm
"Sure, sure," agrees Frór, after hearing from Inar about where they are and how they got there, "but does anyone have a torch that’s not soaking wet? I can’t see a damned thing in this black dark!"
Nov 4, 2017 11:14 am
Robin shakes his head, frowning as he realizes that his pipe must be damp now, too.
Nov 4, 2017 9:22 pm
Thovétar also shakes his head, glancing around at the others.
Nov 4, 2017 11:25 pm
Gilly shrugs and shakes her head.
Nov 5, 2017 6:10 am
"No use noddin' shakin' an shruggin' iffin I ain't can hear ya, is it?" asks Frór as he waits to hear from the others but only receives replies of soft shuffling in the dark.

Shaking off some of the water and grumbling to himself about wet gear, the son of Grór rummages in the dark through his pouches and his backpack, trying to find his tinder box. "What good is a dwarf that can't start a fire in the wet, eh?" he asks rhetorically and then feverishly begins trying to spark up a wet, smokey torch...

...failing that, he'll blindly grope around the room for a lamp or torch that someone might have left here, or anything else he could set fire to in order to see by, if all else fails.
Nov 6, 2017 2:53 pm
It takes a few tries, but Fror is finally able to get a torch spitting out a bit of light and a fair bit of smoke. In the dim light, things look little different than it did in the dark. It's a dank room, with a thin skin of stagnant water along the floor. A single doorway on the opposite wall leads inwards.
Nov 6, 2017 4:28 pm
Inar brings his shield round and takes point "Ready?" he asks quietly before moving into the open doorway
Nov 6, 2017 5:32 pm
Frór follows their leader silently and lights the way from behind, over Inar's shoulder as best he can, using his walking stick in his other hand to test the ground as they go.
Nov 7, 2017 3:52 am
Moving into the next area, you come across a vast, vaulted chamber. Some light spills into the chamber from an opening on the far side of the room. You can easily make out two arched openings -- one to the left and right, and the suggestions of two more further up in the room. A third pair of openings are faintly visible from the light coming from the opening opposite you. One of them appears to have slightly more decoration or something going on about it.
Nov 7, 2017 11:31 am

falryx sent a note to mcneils5,Omenstar
Inar looks about, but the thin film of water obscures any sign of tracks. It's not enough that it's super splashy, or anything, but it's sufficient that mostly all you can tell is that the ground consistently wet with puddles here and there. It also smells damp, and dark. Musty and heavy.

Fror is able to spot a few sconces, but at this point, nothing remains in them that would be lightable. He's suspicious that the age of this room is enough -- and the damp insidious enough -- that if there had been unused torches there when it was last occupied, they've long since decayed and fallen away. However, as a group, your eyes have adjusted somewhat to the dimmer light and you can see well enough to get by.

Gilly makes her way through the room, looking at the arches, one by one. All of them are identical, and nondescript, except for the one in the far right corner. It is larger and is decorated with stones of many colors that haven't faded in the long years since the place has fallen into disuse. Also, unlike the other archways, this one leads to a short series of steps leading a bit further down a short hallway.
Nov 8, 2017 10:42 am
Inar points towards the 'fancy' archway "I suspect that way is our best bet" he says quietly before starting to move towards the opening.
Nov 9, 2017 5:05 pm
"Yes!" agrees Frór, "because lord Balin was supposed to be delivering a pretty gemstone, right? Good thinking, Old Stoutfoot!"

Nov 10, 2017 5:37 pm

The door is clearly a stout one -- as it's withheld quite a beating from... something. Perhaps whatever left all those bones up above. It is, in retrospect, somewhat amazing that the door has held up all this time. It's been reinforced with cleverly wrought metal that has withstood the dampness of the flooded rooms and held up to a determined assault.

Beyond that, it's pretty firmly shut. Perhaps barred from the inside.

Fror is, alas, unable to glean any insight from the claw marks. About all he is certain is that whatever it is, it either can jump up rather high or it stands on two feet. Regardless, they have nasty claws. At Inar's knock and Fror's bellow, there's a scuffling behind the door -- as if something is being pulled from before it. Then the rasp of some locks being pulled and the door carefully opens inward.

In the torchlight the sunken face of a battered old Dwarf looks out at you. "By Durin's beard! Oin! We've been found by our kin!" The door opens wider and Balin gestures you inside. "Come in, come in.. quickly before they come investigating."
Nov 21, 2017 7:17 pm

With the door shut, Oin and Balin secure it again and point you to some heavy things to push in front of it just in case. You are in a wide room with a short ceiling supported by wide, stocky pillars -- it's clearly a wine cellar. Or it was, at least. There's nothing in the room beyond Balin and Oin and what they've piled against the door.

"I'm not entirely sure." Balin offers. "Some creatures that live down here. They look somewhat like drowned corpses that walk about. We were able to fend them off enough to get into this room and lock ourselves in. But it's been days and we've had naught to eat and drink -- there's simply no way we could fight our way out in this condition."

At these words, you do reflect that Balin and Oin look quite a bit the worse for wear. "We should get out of here as soon as possible." Oin adds.
Nov 22, 2017 10:30 pm
Frór immediately hands over his water skin and rummages through his pack for some trail rations. "Here. Right you are,Oin! Have a bite, tighten your belts, and let’s make our move,"
Nov 23, 2017 12:56 am
Gilly stares with shining eyes, having quite the opposite reaction to her brother. Her awe and excitement keep her unusually silent, though she is quick to join Fror in finding rations to share.
Nov 28, 2017 3:49 am
Oin and Balin gather what belongings they have with them -- they are meager indeed. Although they heft their axes, they look far too tired to do anything but carry them. Each of you is quite certain that should it come to combat, they will be next to useless.
Nov 29, 2017 10:19 am
Gilly strings her bow and knocks an arrow, holding it ready but not drawn.
Nov 29, 2017 1:21 pm
Robin looks quite hesitant, but readies his small blade as well.
Nov 29, 2017 4:53 pm
Inar readies his sword and shield, moving to the front of the group. He’s about to say to one of the others to open the door when he remembers something. Reaching into his pack he pulls out a small wrapped bundle and offers it to Balin "We found this on our journey, I wanted to return it to your stewardship" he says as he hands the gift for the king of the eagles to the older dwarf.
Nov 30, 2017 5:12 am
Balin's eyes go wide and he nods his thanks. "Well done. Well done. I'm glad this is safe. But perhaps it will need to be delivered another way..."

With the material blocking the door and the locks pulled aside, you venture forth into the corridor once more. At the moment, the area remains silent and dim. The light is low, with the flickering of Fror's torch -- now in the hands of Oin -- casting moving shadows about the walls and floor around you.

Nov 30, 2017 7:00 pm
"Balin! Oin! hold the torch high! Stay behind us! Stay safe! We'll take care of these swampy boogy-men!" shouts Frór as he passes his fancy walking stick to Balin and hefts his huge mattock, then moves to the fore to defend his kin and engage the monsters.

The opening volley from the Fellowship is swift and furious! Fror's mattock bats one of the creatures away before crushing another one beneath his furious strength. Inar's own attack, while more cautious than Fror's nonetheless cleanly slays the beast that had been batted aside by his fellow Dwarf.

Robin seems to disappear for a moment as he sneaks around the shambling beasts and sinks his dagger and sword into one of them. It falls to the ground with a slurpy sploosh as Robin's arrow pierces the skull of the one on the right, dropping it like a sack of rocks. Two of the beasts remain before you.

Inar's slash and Gilly's quick aim take out the two remaining creatures.

Behind the fellowship, Balin nods sagely, "That was well done -- but there are far more than half a dozen of these creatures. It would be best if we saw ourselves out."
Dec 8, 2017 2:11 pm
Robin nods his head in agreement. Turning to Gilly, he asks quietly, "Are you all right?"
Dec 8, 2017 6:16 pm
"What vile creatures are they?" asks Frór as he kicks one of the corpses aside, "Some dark sorcery gone awry, no doubt! Let's git movin' back from where we came - er, wait, no... Lord Balin, is there a way out other than swimming through the tunnel under the cold pond?"
Dec 18, 2017 11:40 pm
Balin shrugs to Frór, "I do not know what these creatures are -- they were not something we came across in years past. As to the way out, I'm only aware of the one -- we were ambushed after our arrival and fought our way to the cellar. I suppose we could look about -- but there's a risk of getting cornered.."
Dec 19, 2017 11:45 pm
"It may be worth trying to find what it is that’s drawing people down here and seeing if we can put an end to it. I wouldn’t feel right leaving this behind us for others to fall under its sway"
Dec 20, 2017 10:43 am
"Whatever it was, it sounded like a bell, did it not?" He asks, hoping it might jar Balin's memory.
Jan 4, 2018 4:40 am
Balin looks at a loss when you look to him. "We were set upon shortly after we awoke in the chamber there. Given the numbers -- and our recent-enough dance with a troll, we weren't in any shape to investigate for a bell. We were lucky to find the wine cellar and lock ourselves in."

He looks about warily, "I have no love to leave a trap here for others -- except that this is sufficiently out of the way it seems unlikely to entrap many. And, if I'm being honest, I fear greater numbers than a half dozen of these beasts."
Jan 4, 2018 10:23 am
Gilly looks torn for a moment then suggests, "Much as I'd love to explore, I think getting Master Balin to safety is more important right now." She brightens, "We can always come back later!"
Jan 8, 2018 3:51 am
Balin nods. "That seems sensible. Though, I'm not sure I'd come back without quite a few more people."

Without anyone raising a fuss or a counter argument, Balin and Oin head towards the wet chamber at the south end of the room -- eager to head away from this place.
Jan 9, 2018 6:52 pm
The son of Grór strides forward to place himself in a guards position next to Balin.
Jan 11, 2018 4:27 am
You manage to exit through the watery grotto without fuss -- surfacing quickly in the shallow pool and wading in the afternoon sunlight towards the edges. The group of you make something of a ruckus in the water, making it hard to hear if the strange bell still tolls. Greenish-tinged crows wheel and caw overhead as you emerge from the water, clearly annoyed at your presence. Otherwise, things are quiet here.

"With this," he says, hefting the box Inar has given to him, "we need not return to our camp. But I think it may be wise for us to consider a return to Laketown and seek an alternate way to deliver this. Unless you lot had in mind a bit of a journey." He casts his eyes towards the deeper parks of Mirkwood that lurk nearby and clearly doesn't fancy that particular task at this point.
Jan 11, 2018 10:10 am
Gilly's eyes sparkle with excitement and she throws a pleading look at her brother while she mouths The King of the Eagles!
Jan 12, 2018 11:21 am
Inar ponders Balin's words for a few moments before responding "We are somewhat lacking in supplies for an extended expedition especially considering the size of our group. Perhaps it would be best to return to Laketown as you say Lord Balin so we can resupply at the very least. If you did feel a larger group then would be for the best to ensure the success of your endeavour I, and I am sure my companions also, would be willing to accompany you."
Jan 16, 2018 5:57 pm
"Well," says Frór without much forethought, "I would eagerly embark on the journey, and little Gilly seems to have a keen look in her eyes too! Is there no friendly house along the way at which to resupply? Or other means of finding provisions? Tighten our belts and press onwards, I say! (If possible…)"
Jan 19, 2018 6:19 am
Balin shakes his head. "I know of no where to resupply other than the forest itself -- and I do not think it is safe to hunt their absent a keen understanding of its wiles. It has been some years since I last crossed it, and I do not relish doing so again without adequate supplies."

Oin nods and adds, "I agree. Given the state of supplies, Inar has the best course of action. Gloin can determine how he'd like this delivered. And we can be safely away -- and able to rest."

Sorry for the egregious delay. I'm being slammed by work lately. It'll keep up for at least another couple weeks.

With Balin and Oin's voice and vote -- you valiantly agree to escort them back to Laketown. Moving the boats upstream is a slog, but you're able to make some progress as the river is relatively lazy through the marshes. Closer to the Stair of Girion it becomes rougher going, but you manage to make it and have your boats ported back up the stair.

You find yourselves back in Laketown after about eight days (compared to the scant 3 or so it took you to find your way south) and although you are tired, you nonetheless return your charges and their box safely to Gloin, who is clearly overjoyed to see his brother -- and Balin as well. As a reward for a job well done, you have earned both the friendship of Gloin and ten gemstones of fine value.

We enter now into the Fellowship phase... do you guys need a refresher or do you have the source material to assist?
Jan 31, 2018 1:53 pm
OOC:
I think the main thing that would bear into our approach for the Fellowship phase would be how much time in game will pass until we pick things up again? If it's just going to be a few days then it'd probably make sense for us all to stick together but if it was going to be longer than a few weeks we'd probably break the fellowship and agree to meet back up at a later date

The early spring of your journey's beginning has, in the subsequent couple of weeks of Adventure turned into more of a proper spring. Returning to Laketown with Balin and Oin has been a boon to your noteriety and to your purse. Although summer usually is a grand time to step out again and adventure, you each are keenly aware that in the Fall, there will be a celebration of the fifth anniversary of the Battle of Five Armies.

The choice before you then, is whether or not you take your now -- mid-spring -- selves into further adventure, or if you choose to keep a low profile over the summer so that you can participate in the celebrations this Fall. Of course, if you adventure farther, you may find yourselves far away when the big event occurs -- but such is the nature of adventure.
OOC:
From a campaign POV, I can work with either a relatively quick (~1 month) turn around and Fellowship phase, or we can wait until 2947 to pick things up. So that you can enjoy the party and hurry home to enjoy the winter months among kin. What would be the preference of the Fellowship?

As a side note -- once we're done with the phase -- we'll likely hit a 1-2 month hiatus while I try and get a handle on work and ensure I have more time to continue with this!

Party? Of course we stay for the party!

Feb 13, 2018 8:41 pm
OOC:
Are we advancing a level at this point?

Also wondering if we're going to use the additional undertakings from the Loremaster's Guide? Although, I guess gaining open or cultural virtues aren't available yet, regardless, as this is our first Fellowship Phase, right?
As a foot-soldier who fought in the Battle of Five Armies, Frór wouldn't want to miss the anniversary victory celebration. "Think how the ale will flow at this party, Inar! And we'll sing the old songs of victory; and we'll make new ones too! I should re-avow my vengeance at the auspicious occasion too, me thinks!"

Then Frór clears his throat and rehearses: "Ah-hem! In witness to the might and fury of Beorn in his slaying of the orc chief, Bolg, I declare that it shall be a Dwarf that will repay the debt by slaying all the sons of Bolg from this day forth until his line is utterly failed and forgotten! And that Dwarf shall be me! This I swear as my Oath to all Dwarves and Men who hear it this day in battle!

What do you think?"

Ok. *cough* *cough*

It looks like consensus is to stay in Laketown and have a quiet summer so you can attend the party in the fall up in Dale. Afterwards, you will winter over either in Laketown or back at your home(s) in Erebor or the Shire with a plan to meet up again in the spring of 2947. For the 'every-other' undertakings, you may choose to exercise them now as it's your first fellowship and the rules are not explicit when the 'every other' begins (e.g. is it 1st and 3rd or 2nd and 4th?).

Every character advances in level - so it may be worthwhile to talk about your Fellowship phase/undertaking with this new experience coming to bear somehow.

I think, generally, a Fellowship phase is meant for y'all to roleplay / dictate what happens, etc. The broad strokes for each of you is:

1) spend the rest of summer in Lakedown
2) head up to Dale for a fun party in the fall
3) winter over in Laketown or Erebor (dwarves) or the Shire (Hobbits).
4) reconvene in Laketown in the summer
May 22, 2018 10:01 pm
OOC:
So would we just narrate what goes off for our character through the entire phase or each of the 3 ‘activities’ before we reconvene?
May 23, 2018 3:30 am
OOC:
Sure. You could also do it in parts in case you want to play off of one another?
May 26, 2018 12:44 am
OOC:
Perhaps some prompts will help? You are in Laketown for the summer. You all plan to head to Dale in time for the celebration in the Fall. You've returned Gloin's kin and have not only his thanks but a few shiny trinkets to boot. How would you spend your summer?
May 26, 2018 8:53 am
After a week of sitting around taking his ease Inar begins to get a little anxious. Perhaps it’s the feeling that things cant be this good for too long or seeing the same faces too many times making him think that he’s being watched but soon Inar decides he needs to get clear of things for a while. Leaving a message for his friends that he’ll see them in Dale in the autumn he heads out into the wilderness around Laketown mainly to get some distance so he can see any enemies coming but he also finds the odd task helping some of the smaller settlements in the area over the summer months before he finally starts making his way north.
OOC:
Hoping that’s ok, how do you want to handle levelling up? You want us to post in the char creation thread for hp rolls and the like?

After Inar leaves for the wilderness, Frór spends time with Laketown's Bowmen of the Guild—not joining the guild—but hanging out with them in order to learn to shoot a shortbow. Then he spends the summer going hunting with whoever will take him along. He lives off his game or sells it at the Butchers' Quay.
OOC:
I'm hoping one of his "gemstones of fine value" (we each got 2, right?) is enough to buy him a short bow, arrows and pay for his living in Laketown over the Summer.
He spends the long summer evenings sharing tales with his hobbit companions, if they're around, or with other dwarves who may be in town so as to keep apprised of any news from Erebor.

But on the hunt he grows secretly hopeful that instead of wild game, he comes across a goblin to shoot. "Baruk Khazâd! Khazâd ai-mênu!" He broods sometimes about the vengeance he has pledged. He looks forward to making a renewal of his Oath at the upcoming Anniversary Party and then wintering in Erebor.

It seems most in-character for Frór to take the "Old Hatred" Cultural Virtue during this Fellowship phase, which he would gain the benefit from after spending the winter with his kin in the Lonely Mountain.

RE: leveling up -- yes please, let's document what we're doing to characters in that thread.

Is Inar going to pursue an 'undertaking' during his Fellowship phase? Let me know if you need pointers to options.

Fror -- sounds good.

We'll hold tight to see what Gilly wants to do...
May 29, 2018 4:55 pm
As the summer days gradually shorten, and the evenings begin to get a little cooler, Frór begins to get more anxious for the Anniversary Party. Finally, he heads to Dale, although the party is still a few weeks away. He wants to help and participate in the preparations, and meet other dwarves who might come to do the same from the mountain.

When the day of the celebration at last comes Frór the Tall carefully dons his armour (which, ironically, he never wears for battle, but only saves it for formal occasions) and his fur-lined cloak and throws himself into the merrymaking with all his heart and soul! He sings all the old battle songs and joins with others in the impromptu singing of new verses in memory of the great deeds that were done, and when the time is right Frór climbs up on one of the bigger, central tables and renews his Oath, just as he imagined doing several months earlier:

"In witness to the might and fury of Beorn in his slaying of the orc chief, Bolg, I declare that it shall be a Dwarf that will repay the debt by slaying all the sons of Bolg from this day forth until his line is utterly failed and forgotten! And that Dwarf shall be me! This I swear as my Oath to all Dwarves and Men who hear it this day in battle!"

He raises his fist high with that last statement and bellows out a mighty cheer, along with any and all who will join him.

Summer passes uneventfully for each of you. Inar puts in a helping hand here and there about the community and helps to ensure a lawful road out of Laketown up towards Dale, though as the summer winds down the amount of traffic increases, diminishing the need for his aid there. Robin and Gilly spend an idyllic summer on the lake. Robin makes solid inroads in his fishing style and occasionally Gilly catches rumor of dragon treasure sunk beneath the waters attached to Smaug's rotting carcass. Fror has been more industrious than his hobbit friends and the Bowmen enjoy his tales and do what they can to help him learn the way of the bow.

As fall comes -- all of you but Fror gather together and make your way up to Dale. It's an easy journey -- with plenty of opportunity for company as people from all over gather together. Fror has made his way up early and has managed to secure lodging of some repute for the four of you by being a couple weeks ahead of schedule. Dale prepares for the celebration by hanging colorful banners and stringing cloth flags across streets from building to building. Toymakers of Erebor are out in force with cunning devices for young hands to covet and Men, Dwarves and the occasional Elf and Hobbit are in attendance. The Elves of the Woodland kingdom remain, five years on, somewhat separate from Dale and Erebor but with less hostility than on that day years ago.

It is the last few days of November and the the festival furns into a great feast. As persons known to Gloin himself, you find yourselves in Dale's great hall, guests of Bard himself. You're well and away from the persons of High and Mighty Status, but nonetheless, you're in the warm hall and enjoying excellent food and drink with other people who are each, in their own way, fairly interesting...
OOC:
I'll pause here in case there things anyone would like to do/note as part of this?

Frór loudly and drunkenly (and preferably standing on a chair or table or stairs, etc.) re-declares his oath, as previously described. 😜 Otherwise, he enjoys carousing in anyone’s company (except elves I should think), and he vehemently supports all Gilly’s fish tales.
Jun 8, 2018 4:10 am
OOC:
Sorry for the delay -- I missed Fror's update.
The festival is a fun occasion -- and it seems that somehow a missive has been able to reach the Eagles given Balin and Oin's failed attempt to do so. Given your presence in the main hall, you see such persons as befits tales to be told to children and grandchildren. Not only is King Bard there, but so to are Dain Ironfoot II the king of Erebor and Thranduil the Woodland King. A mysterious visitor wearing nondescript grey robes and a slightly frumpy conical hat sits near these people. Gilly is well convinced that must be none other than Gandalf. Although the smoke rings he emits are magnificent, there seem to be hints of a deeper purpose to his presence with the local royalty. However none of you are important enough to be near to hear anything of repute.

Rumors, of course, abound.

All in all the festival lasts for a full week before it begins to wind down. Winter is coming and the peoples are interested in returning to their homes.
OOC:
Gilly and Robin - do you head back to the Shire? Inar and Fror -- back to Erebor? Alternatively any or all of you can stay in Laketown
Jun 8, 2018 9:25 am
Robin convinces his sister that they should go home and visit their family, and she is only briefly reluctant. They journey home to the Shire full of stories and eager for the good food that awaits them.
Jun 8, 2018 12:36 pm
Inar makes his goodbyes quietly and without fuss before heading back out in the direction of Laketown.
OOC:
Inar will steer clear of Erebor as he’s still convinced that he and his kin are being hunted so less time he spends in close proximity of friends and family the less risk they are of being collateral damage if something comes for him
Jun 8, 2018 6:43 pm
Frór spends the winter in Erebor. It is there that his hatred for the orcs is rekindled, making him an even fiercer enemy of all goblin-kind!

But before parting ways, he bids warm farewells to his friends with heartily expressed hopes for a reunion before too long!
Jun 11, 2018 2:15 am
You each find your way to your wintering spot. Robin and Gilly have a long, but uneventful trip home. Although the pass is choked with snow, the Beornings have made good sport of keeping things relatively clear, so there are a few hard days across the Misty Mountains for them, but soon they come back down the back of the mountains and into Eriador. From there, the journey onward towards Bree and the Shire is low key and borderline delightful. Once home, of course, Robin and Gilly are treated with a mixture of awe and disdain as they appear to be a little too focused on adventure for proper Hobbits.
OOC:
Anything in particular you'd like to accomplish over the winter? You did note your undertaking, so it'll take place. And don't forget to level up!
Laketown is a little on the grim side over the winter as what weather the Misty Mountains don't absorb seem to be thrown off by them in the direction of Erebor and the Lake as some sort of mischievous ploy to repay them for the events of five years ago. Still, Gloin finds his way into town from time to time, and Inar is occasionally asked by for a drink of ale and to discuss that which he's seen or heard between visits.
OOC:
I think I saw you pick and resolve your undertaking, and you're leveled up IIRC. Your plan to take the auto-HP is fine.
Lastly, Fror has great fun all winter in Erebor practicing his martial arts and getting into a proper froth about his hatred of Orcs. He spends many a late night patrol around the mountain regaling anyone lucky enough to be assigned to join him with tales of precisely what he plans to do to any Orcs he happens to come across.
OOC:
I'm not sure if I noted your Undertaking -- I did see you level up (and roll badly, alas)

Inar takes some comfort from his meetings with Gloin but otherwise doesn’t find himself quite able to shake the feeling that something is going to go badly wrong soon. His fears however do not come to anything over the winter and soon the spring thaw is upon Laketown. Without realising it the thought that his companions will soon be back in town lifts Inars spirits as the summer approaches.
