OOC:
Xorthan, Ez, Ox, you are welcome to have at it as you see fit. Your contact's man Ruacht asked for non-lethal attacks only, but as usual it is up to you to make your own choices.
Three young meathead Dannein patrolmen still standing and all of the sudden trying to figure out what is going on, just realizing that their point man got racked out.
Y'all have Initiative but not Surprise. Talius is spotted, though Kray and Thorn are (for the moment) not yet seen.

Back at the longhouse

"That's right, jaw japper. Gandish." Zaituc yells back to Qiu, talking loud from the front patio but not turning around to look at the Alijanian sitting inside.

"You don't know anything about that. To be sure. This is probably your first time seeing a forest, street sweeper that you are, so a belhig (goblin in Dannein) would probably be able to split you open and have your liver full eaten before you even knew that he had jumped out of the bush." The old man laughs a bit but then coughs

"I say this though" the old Voldruvan stammers on "I saw Gandish in the Huskan Forest that were dirty as old-plate copper and mean as a Bishtu sandsnake too. Arms strapped so tight that they could likely grab big Apox and break him in two over their knee."

Zaituc stops short, mumbles for a bit and then looks up, towards Ivor who is still standing near him on the porch. The big pirate nods to the ex-gladiator and says in a lower, more serious voice, "Apox was a good sword. I say he would split a Gandish in half ear to crotch any day of a life. Fuck these goblin half-breeds." Zaituc then grabs a wine bottle from the tabletop and uncorks it. He pours some wine out on the ground, in memory of Apox clearly, and then takes a big swig himself.

After a time, he begins again. "You think you are a wrestler, Alijanian? I say you best be careful if you try to wrestle Belil Gand. If a nightgoblin gets his copper fingers around your neck, tangles you up, you will probably get your windpipe pulled out through your front skin before you can croak out the next word in your river-boat string song."
Apr 6, 2017 3:53 pm
Thorn's peripheral vision catches his guide in full sprint, running past him toward the first of the lads. With a chuckle and no hesitation, he propels himself forward toward the youth behind and to the right of the shield bearer, the one closest to him and to Talius's left. Reaching the young warrior, he feints with his right fist, then throws a left hook at the Dennein's face.
OOC:
Edit: Okay I screwed this up. Should have rolled the d20s one at a time?

Rolls

Feinting attack advantage - (2d20+4)

(611) + 4 = 21

Apr 6, 2017 4:17 pm
Talius sees the signal from Ruacht to use non lethal force and he pulls out his club and tightens his grip on his shield. The warning alarm called out, Talius curses and spits on the ground. He then looks over to see Ruacht take off, Talius does the same, running straight for one of the Dannein youth. Talius rushes in with a high stance, then drops his weight at the last moment planting his feet into a rooted stance before crashing into the Dannein with his shield then makes a wide arc launching his club toward the Dannein's head.

Thorn v. Patrolman 2
OOC:
No need to reroll; I can see both rolls individually. The 11 + 4 = 15 is higher. That is a hit.

Thorn bursts from concealment and covers the distance before the youth can throw his javelin. The young Dannein is distracted by the feint and a Thorn's fist cracks hard into his jaw.

EDIT AFTER SEEING DAMAGE RESULT: The Dannein boy is shook through and through by the punch. He falters and stumbles backwards, dropping to one knee in a daze. Still pressing on, the tough kid tries hard to stand upright and does so briefly, but still reeling he tumbles backwards and splashes down in a seated position in a shallow flooded section of grass. His axe falls from his hand, and he tilts sideways, barely steadying with a shaky hand placed on the ground. He is in a thick stupor trying to gather himself. He spits out a big wad of blood onto the muddy grass.

Talius v. Patrolman 3

EDIT AFTER DICE RESULTS: The husky Dannein youth's strength is suprising. His stance is steady. Talius crashes into the boy, their shields crack against each one another. The tenacious patrolman is not driven to the ground. Talius's club swing does however connect, hitting the Dannein on the shoulder with a thud. The boy cringes briefly from the pain, and then steadies himself for a return strike, an anger in his eyes.
OOC:
Stand by, Ox. Want to keep all rounds/turns the same across the board if possible so I don't loose track.
Patrolman 4?
OOC:
Ez, this guy is the only one remaining unaccounted for during the first half of Round 1, in case Kray wants to target in. For visuals, he is the spearman that snapped to attention on the trail in the clearing, alerting the others of Talius' position. His other 3 buddies are already matched up. He is still standing slightly further back with his spear, trying in the burst of action to see how best to get involved. He is about 20 feet away from Kray, and now about 15 feet away at another angle from Thorn (who just knocked the lights out of his wingman)

Rolls

Patrolman 3, contested Athletics

Zaituc says:

Qiu waves a hand in dismissal, "Bah! Only Hua walks away when someone wrestle with Hua. Besides, they hear my beautiful voice and they join me in song!"

Kray shared Ruacht's frustration. Dannein war games.

Lacking a blunt weapon, Kray readies his shield and forms a front near Ruacht, keeping to the same side with Talius in an effort to minimize flanking opportunities for the young Dannein warriors to be.

Kray will use the Help action here on the nearest Dannein warrior (not the one who is prone), which should be useful to whoever attacks him next, granting Advantage.

Also, shifting Proficiency Bonus to defense: AC 17 +2 (shield) +2 (Prof Bonus) = 21

Top of the 1st Actions

Patrolman #4

Somewhat confused by Kray's deliberate defensive stance, the young spear seems taken aback and falters at first, then he recovers and heaves a spear thrust at Kray.

EDIT AFTER DICE: Result on hit 9. That's a whiff. Kray easily blocks or sidesteps that.

--------------------------------------------------------------------

Bottom of the 1st Actions

Point Man Strikes back at Ruacht

The point man heaves back to his feet and tries to bull rush and manhandle Ruacht, charging wildly.

EDIT AFTER DICE: Ruacht throws the kid away, easily resisting the grapple, and rares back with the kid's own shield to use against him next round.

Shieldman Attacks Talius

The beefy young Dannein with the white-wall shaved sides and thick middle braids haircut heaves out a battle cry and swings his axe-mace at Talius. His face is full of both anger and fear.

EDIT AFTER DICE: Mace Axe hit attempt result is 21. That may be a hit. If so, you can see damage: 9. Remember, even if it is a HP loss, it is not really a hit likely. See "Philosophy of Hit Points." I would think it would just be a hellacious attempt to sidestep or block a would-be deadly blow.

Will move to Top of the 2nd, PCs attack, in new thread separately.

Ruacht attempts to smash straight down onto the center back of the pointman, using the boy's on shield as an improvised weapon.

EDIT AFTER DICE: The blow is devastating. The kid drops straight to the ground and does not move.

With one opponent down, Ruacht turns without hesitation and shield charges the spearman that Kray is corralling on the trail. The big Dannein boy is knocked down and lies prone in the wet grass.

Thorn leans over the man he just decked. He grins at him and pats his face. "You don't need this at the moment, do you?" Grabbing the javelin out of the stunned kid's limp grasp and turning, he hurls it at the warrior who just threw his spear at Kray.

Patrolman #4 aka Spearman

As he is knocked to the ground by Ruacht, a javelin thrown by Thorn flies by the middle spearman, narrowly missing him. Ruacht looks up, surprised.

Update: 2 guys down and out. 1 guy down prone. 1 guy squared off toe-to-toe against Talius.
Kray and Talius still have Actions available for the Top of the 2nd Round.

Talius takes the blow from the Dannien's mace on his shield slamming hard against Talius' body.

Talius v. Last Man Standing

Post-Dice Edit: Talius crashes against the young warrior again, sending and explosive shove shield to shield. Though it is close to a stalemate again, the boy does falter slightly and Talius capitalizes, charging onward and throwing the boy off balance. The younger Dannein tumbles down to the ground just as Talius club cracks down on his arm that holds the vicious weapon. The axe-mace drops and the boys arm is hit so hard that it is driven back into his face, stunning him briefly. He lies on the ground unarmed and prone with Talius towering over him.

"Stop!" Ruacht yells out "Do not get up, Ros. Nor you either, Carraig's Son. This stops now! Yield! You know that you have scorned me, and that this did not need to happen. It is your own fault that you lie here as you are, but nothing more should come of it if you relent. We are no enemies of yours to stalk and ambush in the night. Agreed?"

The young warriors look around, both recovering from the explosion of action against them. They look around to see four veteran warriors standing around them waiting for their response. Though frustrated, soon they both accept their defeat in silence. They look at Ruacht and grimace.

"Alright, now stand up, you bulls. Help your fellows."

The Danneins stand up slowly and assist their companions who both received the worst of the thrashing. Eventually all four of them stand upright, doing a good job at ignoring their injuries. They were bested, they do not like it, but they remain proud and convey their readiness as they look at Ruacht and the others eye to eye again.

"Now I told Riocard that no one was to follow nor stand watch over our group at the longhouse. Agreements have already been made about this. Tell me, why did you come along behind us, stalking us like deer? You speak, Ceadech."

After hesitation, the young Dannein, the point man who Ruacht had hurt so badly with his club and the shield, speaks up. "If there was an agreement as you say, Riocard must disregard it. It was he who told us to follow you and stand watch over you at the longhouse."

Ruacht stands looking at the boy for a time, showing no signal as to how he takes the information he just heard. Similar the boy looks at him steadily, offering no more words or expression for a time before continuing. "If you release us back to the forest, we will loop around by another route unknown to you so that we can survey The Capcaun's hold," Ceadech says, looking Ruacht in the eye. "We will seek to avoid your sentries. If they fight us, we will fight back as possible but fall back into the night and continue our watch where we can. If you want us to fail at our charge, corsair, then you must stun all of us until we cannot rise. Either that or slay us. If that is what must be done, then give us our weapons so that we can stand rightly against your assault."

Ruacht meets the gaze of the young warrior for a long, long stare. Kray, Talius, and Thorn actually wonder if Ruacht will tell the boys to take up their weapons, launching an inevitable death match there on the trail, and one that would only have one ending: all of the young Dannein warriors bleeding to death on the muddy grass.

"You will get no time with the whores." Ruacht says to the boy, breaking the silence.

Ceadech tries to hold a steady look at his adversary, but his confusion breaks through and can be seen in his face.

Ruacht steps out and looks at all of the youths. "Exactly as I say. Do exactly as I say" He paces by all of them and makes eye contact with each. "Either that or by morning you will draw out your weapons and grip them in your hands as you meet that clean death that you seem so anxious to claim."

The boys look on at Ruacht and steal a few glances at one another. "Follow behind us 40 paces." Ruacht says to them. "When we reach clearing at the longhouse, there is a stable to the north. You will set your survey there for the night. That is where you will stay until you leave in the morning at dawn. Food and drink will be sent to you there."

Ruacht goes by Ceadech one more time and meets him face to face. "The north stable is yours for the night. It is a good vantage for report, but that is the only ground where it is safe for you."

After staring at the boys for a bit longer. Ruacht nods at Kray, Talius, and Thorn and then turns again to lead down the trail towards their destination. The chirp and buzz of the swamp is in full sound as the night sets in.
Apr 7, 2017 11:51 am
"Hold." Kray approaches Ruacht, speaking low enough that only he could hear. "Why do these boys need to 'stand watch' over you at the longhouse?"

Who is Riocard? If Kray doesn't know, he would ask Ruacht.

The reason I'm interested is due to local politics. Perhaps there's some subversive reason these guys have been tasked with following us (more on that below), and 'standing watch.' These young warriors might not even know the real reason they're following us. Played right, if Riocardo knows Ruacht well enough, he would know that the young warriors would be spared if discovered, and Ruacht might even unwittingly help them with their task (as he seems inclined to do).

It might seem like a lot of table talk about the situation, but I'm assuming Kray would have shared the following with Talius and Thorn, as it's a big part of the reason they're here: there are competing interests out here in the Danneinkiff/Borderlands, which are specifically aimed at recruiting Dannein warriors. One of them is House Mercon, the other is from House Lepidus, of which they are employing Capulet (the Baron's Ranger) to act as their agent in the matter. Zeituc (aka, the Capcaun) wants to show us some promising recruits before House Lepidus can recruit them, and it's possible Capulet might be working an angle to gain some insight.

Perhaps I'm reading too much into this, but 'standing watch'... I'm not sure why it would be necessary, and clearly Zeitec wouldn't be okay with it.

"Captain Zaituc wants the observers in the stables tonight. Some things they should see, and some things they should not. We will be sure on both. A good tactic you agree, Lord Mercon? And a good tactic must be convincing to be effective." Ruarcht cracks the slightest of smiles and nods at Kray.

"Rest easy, Lord," the Dannein guide continues, "No one can catch us unaware in our own realm. Nothing is permitted unless the Captain deems it so." Ruarcht points non-chalantly ahead to large bush. As he and Kray pass the bush, Ruarcht makes a soft whistle. From within the bush, a soft whistle responds in signal. Kray cannot see the sentry, though he is sure one is hidden within.

"Riocard is the armsman of Padrig..."
OOC:
Kray already knows Padrig, Chief of the Murrough Clan. He lives in Fish Point aka Baoill, the fishing camp that you guys just left before sunset.
"...and a woman of an armsman at that. Sending these boys to do what he and his pogue chief are too fearful to do themselves. The fish-mongers would be better to put young Ceadech in charge of the Clan. He is more hunter than bait-stringer I say. Maybe there is hope for Murrough some day yet. Ha!"

They walk a little way further. "You are right to be wary though, Lord Mercon. Danger lurks in the Drakkenmire." He lets the words hang for a few seconds. "We shall talk of it at length tomorrow I am certain." He nods to Kray in seriousness.

"But tonight there should be no worry. You are our welcomed guest of honor. We are happy to see the heir of Devil Hade, and I assure you that this night holds only comfort, safety, and merriment for you and your men. Come and see. Here is the longhouse. We have arrived."
OOC:
Hey, absolutely great thoughts all that you bring up. One adjustment that I know Kray would know, to be clear, there is no way that Capulet could have any reach to influence circumstance out here across the Naas in Murrough country and on the edge of the Drakkenmire. This locale is way off the reservation for any Yuoric in the area except for Kray and Thorn traveling with Talius. Kray can feel highly confident that if Yuorics were traveling in this area, he would likely have heard about it by now from the neighborhood. Capulet is really struggling to get credibility on the other side of the river, and there is very little he can do right now without Kray and the team being aware. But again, none of this you could know for sure without discussing it, so great call to bring it up. Also, Kray knows that Zaituc's mother was a Murrough Dannein woman, so although there is some tension and pissing contests certainly going on, Kray probably understands that Zaituc and his men are still intertwined in some level of cooperation with the Murrough settlement and leadership. It is just the Dannein way to often live with a certain level of strife and confrontation even between neighbors who are not truly adversaries.
Apr 7, 2017 8:36 pm
Kray looks toward the longhouse, the moon, then back at Ruacht. "Agreed. Business on the morrow."

He could well appreciate letting it wait. It was time to let the day melt away with the pleasures of women, wine, song, and whatever else Zaituc might have to offer in the way of hospitality.

"Now, let's see about this 'comfort, safety, and merriment' you speak of." With that, Kray makes his way toward the longhouse.

It's early spring, correct? Also, just curious, does Dark Thrones have it's own calendar, or is time marked simply by the naming of seasons? I know the setting isn't a literate oriented one with any decent concepts of recorded history, but I thought a calendar might be happening.

Also, I know that we're visiting Zaitec after Reverence, a week long feast and alms distribution sponsored by the Crown and it's fief leaders and the Gellirian Church, marking the beginning of spring and a liturgy of repentance and renewal and thanksgiving and prayer. However, I've considered that a holiday doesn't necessarily require a calendar (it could be weather oriented along with the lunar cycle, etc).

In the end, I'm just curious, and trying to get a feel for the weather as well. What part of the real world could we generally relate the weather of this region to?

DMJ

Apr 7, 2017 9:11 pm
OOC:
True. It is the very early part of spring, the second week in fact. Sort of similar to our weather in real life now I suppose.

Yes. It turns out that there are multiple calendars in Dark Thrones, used in different regions. The most prevalent is the Nadrilian-Yuoric Calendar, that has 12 months of 30 days each, plus one free-standing festival (Reverence, which just finished 2 days ago as you said). Months are 30 days each, with 5 weeks of 6 days each, so note the change in the meaning of "1 week", you lose a day.

Danneins use a different calendar that is mostly just broken down into four seasons. Other calendars include the Archalasian (still used some in Pylos and Kortella), the Sarceran, the Otessite, and the Alijanian.

I keep meaning to organize a timekeeping and calendar sub-forum. Will start it off with the N-Y and Dannein Calendars as soon as I get some time for the cut-and-paste.

On the topic of Forum building, I kicked off a new Forum on NPCs, Factions, and Episode Locales to give a space for tracking major people, groups, places as our story unfolds. Big Zaituc and the Dannein/Voldruvan Blackfin connection become the first participants.

The concept of 'our weather' could be highly variable, depending on where each of us live. Chicago, Miami, etc. I know Jabes is at GMT +8? I was looking for a region in the world we could compare it to, so we could on be on the same page.

Thanks for the notes on the calendar. No hurry on that, but if you set it up, that would be awesome.
