Def yes. Great idea.
Short Rest streamlined to 10 minutes.
Drink water. Catch a breather. Get head straight. Reset and relaunch.

Hey, this may convert to me posting up some general takeaways and summaries rather than blow by blow conversation. Kind of Rutcranna s suggestion to work eat pack and talk.

So if possible, tell me generally what everyone would probably spend their time on (burning body parts, checking equipment, exploring area, interview Rutcranna, etc).

Also send some questions that you want to work in as the conversation turns.

Previously note="constablebrew"]..
A cut from PM convo, relocated here to record story and OOC talk in the Ep 1 thread..
OOC:
Rutcranna knows Maeriks, like she knows almost all of the Bat Hannocs, whether they know what she knows about them or not. But to Maeriks, he is not that familiar with Rutcranna in a personal way. He has seen her like everyone else, she advises the clan, does expositions, leads ceremonies, etc. But on-on-one attention from her , not normal at all. With her fame and importance historically, plus people mostly being afraid of her, I think he would feel to a degree like he should do what she says, at least for now sort of as a default traditional stance.

Rutcranna knows that she needs to break Maeriks out of his extreme introvert passive nature though because she does need him to step up, be an asset instead of a burden, and dig into some of the very real potential that she knows he has. Important: she knows that Maeriks has the druid connection. She's likely the only one in the world who knows right now. She tells him something like:
Maeriks, you may not be the most clever of the clan, but I know the things that you can do when you concentrate and set your mind to something. I know the special things that you can do - with the animals, with the fire, with finding things, with helping people. You are like me. You see things that others do not. You hear sounds that others cannot hear. You do not know it yet, but you speak languages that others could never know and you understand symbols and words that have great power.
...and now is when you have to start acting like the special kind of warrior that you are
OOC:
... etc etc.
... you are the only Champion left from our clan... you are a son of Hannoc ... Bat Hannoc as a clan is broken, the Norach is defeated, but one son of Hannoc is still alive to avenge his family and his people...that is you. Maeriks Mac Hannoc, the Last Champion of Borgh Riac.
OOC:
With that she makes a big breakthrough, same goal, two ways to help:

Goal: To boost Maeriks' morale, confidence, self-worth, and feeling of autonomy

Techniques:
1) Make him face it that he can talk just fine and that he doesn't have to live a life of silence and continue to isolate himself because of a perceived difficulty in speaking. Rutcranna tells him that she know his mother Bithela was cruel to him and put some severe hexes over his speech. Maeriks believes this because his mother told him so. She did not want Maeriks talking, was frustrated with his foolishness, and embarassed by his way of annoying and showing his low INT to the community. She said it was best for him to just be quiet. Rutcranna tells Maeriks that though a mother has a right to control their children, that was a long time ago, there is no more need for that nonsense, and Bithela has been dead for a long time. So Rutcranna is going to get rid of those hexes right here and now forever. She lights a candle, tells him to breathe in the smoke, say his name 3 times and his father and mothers names 3 times right in the line of the smoke. She says now she has all of the hexes pulled out and into the flame of the candle. Then she puts the candle out with a pinch of her fingers. They are gone. Now he is fine and can move on with his life, don't act foolish and waste his words on foolish idle talk, endless questions, and arguments that annoys people, but say what is on his mind - say what you mean and mean what you say.
2) Tell him that she knows what Rigin (Phantom) did to him and that she will protect him from that now, and that they are going to kill Rigin - get rid of him once and for all. Rigin, as he converted from man to monster gradually, got increasing mental powers, including telepathy (more like mind raping). He and Cealwin (Goat) had bullied Maeriks into acting as their informant and early warning (remember the tin alarm he rang?) since early on in the change which started in the fall, about 6 months ago, but then continued on after the raid on Driftwood that wiped out almost all of the men and left stragglers struggling through the winter. The Hive used Maeriks to monitor Driftwood while they were away, and tell them where any resistors were, inform them if any came through. If he tried to withhold info, Cealwin would wrestle him down into submission and Rigin would raid through his thoughts and memories. Even Maeriks understands that the info he shared, willingly or otherwise, was used by the Hive to lure in, hunt down, or otherwise eliminate the pockets of Bat Hannocs who tried to evade, sabotage, and resist the domination of The Neighbors and Nahrooma. Maeriks hated it, but The Hive told him that they would torture him forever (using whatever his worst fear is) if he resisted or exposed them. All the while they disrespected him and told him he was unfit to join their superior race because of his weak mind. Rutcranna says that she is going to make marks on his head and do a ritual for him that will protect him from the mental assault of Rigin for 1/2 moon (2 weeks). Rigin will not be able to hurt him or get into his head no matter how hard he tries. By the time the spell is over, they will have confronted Rigin and he will be dead. Rutcranna says that she thinks it will be Maeriks who kills Rigin son of Felin, who was always Maeriks' enemy since childhood. He was a monster as a child and his true nature was exposed and realized once he became a man. Maeriks must strike that monster down and now he can do it. He was very brave to take the first step on his own by coming out here. Now he will not have to fight alone or unprepared. She will be with him and she will give him the weapons and protection he needs to go to battle like a true warrior.

So Rutcranna does this talk and interchange with Maeriks, just between the two of them let's say. She has already done the thing about knocking down his mom's hexes, already talked to him about she understands what Rigin and Cealwin did to him. She tells him now to go get the shoes. When he comes back, he is supposed to put them on along with the armor you described. When he comes out, she gives him the weaponry. Tonight she will do the mental protection ritual for him.

So Maeriks is going to be ready to rock.

Jabes.plays.RPG says:
OOC:
Ivor will want to find or fashion a new net.
OOC:
Ivor last saw the net with Phantom, who hopped onto the roof and disappeared onto the other side. He was injured pretty bad at that time.

Around the back of the house, at an outdoor shed in the back yard, Ivor saw a site where it looked likes someone was injured and threw up.

Thorn saw Phantom out at the old sick-o nasty tree flesh station with tentacles plugged into the back of his neck. At that time, Thorn did not see Phantom holding a net.

Maybe Thorn and Ivor could take a stroll along a possible route that they would piece together with shared stories, see if that net got dropped or put away somewhere along the way.

Also Maeriks is on assignment from Rutcrana to go get something off of Fingol's body down by the pier.

A short stroll again through the backyard swamp woods for Ivor, Thorn, and Maeriks?
Net hunting and body looting?
(X, Maeriks is supposed to get something NOT in the stuff Thorn already has btw.)

After Kray finishes surveying the scene from the deck, reflecting on the depth of the strangeness all about them, he turns to go into the cabin. At that time Rutcrana steps back outside. She has now put on a simple thin gown on to cover herself, though it is still a very small covering. She sees Kray but then goes past to call down to the others still below.

"Thorn," she says, using the name for the first time "I send Maeriks out to the piers to take something from the body of Fingol. Will you accompany him, in the case he needs guidance? Also he tells me that he has some questions for you. I sent him through the lower door on the other side if you would meet him."

She turns to go back inside, but then stoops down to look through a bag. It is Qiu's backpack, with all of the food in it, the same backpack hurled up to hit the cauldron beside Fingol.

Rutcrana asks Kray who the bag belongs to, how it got here. After finding out, she asks if she can use some of the food to cook with.

I assumed we were doing that on our way back from the tree but yeah we could do that now if Thorn agrees.

Medium story short:
The net is out near the base of the old dead tree with the wretched fleshy mass attached to it.

A little more explanation:
Phantom apparently tossed the net aside when he got to the tree, which it seems now that he was using as a sort of recharge station.
The net was not noticeable before. During the fight, Thorn did not see it - likely not really looking for it though - because it was in the leaves on the far side of the tree and he was immediately in a fight on the near side of the tree.
Later that area was covered in deadly gas, so the net was never passed by the party during the initial visit to this site.

Net recovered (though it still has damage from the one cut-through that it suffered during the fight on the deck against phantom)

After the recovery of the net, Ivor and Thorn accompany Maeriks back over to the pier. Again they see Fingol.

Maeriks has to recover and bring back to the cabin two strange things: Fingol's sandals (a nice pair of war shoes) and...Fingol's tongue!

Maeriks has been given a knife. He stares down at the dead witchman for a short time and then gets the deed done, slicing out the tongue and putting it in a small bag that Rutcranna sent him with.

He looks at Thorn and Ivor and says, in Dannein, "So now I have them all. I am going back to the kitchen."

It is the first time that they have heard the big man talk. He walks away in his signature gait, heading back towards the cabin.

"That fucking better not be what's for dinner!" mutters Ivor as he stalks after Maeriks.

What, the Bat Hannoc got your tongue?
Jun 1, 2017 1:05 pm
"Rutcranna, I must admit your plan... it's solid strategy. Distract the enemy... make an opening for our approach... I like it, but I have many questions, and details matter. Perhaps you would enlighten me?"

Kray would be most interested in the interview idea with Rutcranna. How did she come to be in this predicament? How had seeming allies turned into an enemy? What were their motivations? Who (or what) is their leader? More info on Nahrooma? How are men turned into Hive warriors? Rumors of an ancient Wizard and a flying people? Weaknesses of the Hive? And more on her daughter, Sorcha, and why she is in great danger? What is her value to the enemy?

Kray would also want specifics on her plan, which clearly starts with throwing the enemy a big fat red herring of misdirection, geared toward sending the brunt of the foe east of Driftwood.

And yeah, that's a barrage of questions above. Thing is, that's what I'm curious about... lots of unknown variables here.

"Tell me, Rutcranna, was Fingol stealing your draichta?"

Kind of Kray's way to admit to Rutcranna that he's willing to allow that magic is real, and he would definitely be keen to come to grips with this entirely new kind of threat, beyond any training or understanding of the world he has ever been led to believe..
Jun 1, 2017 3:40 pm
Thorn is open to whatever questions Maeriks has for him on their walk to Fingol and back again, as well as helping Ivor recover his net if that is possible. Back at the cabin, Thorn would like to take a look at Rutcrana's little set-up with the tripods and inquire of her what they accomplished. This is a realm way outside of Thorn's knowledge, and he is fairly curious about it all. Thorn also checks his stew and gives the all clear sign to Ivor when (if?) he finds it tongue-free.

After being prompted by Thorn, Maeriks talks as he is walking. Thorn enjoys the change in Maeriks. The big man now has a fresh outfit on, given to him by Rutcrana. It is still humble clothing, a simple brown wool tunic robe with a flat woven belt, but it is much better than the ragged and grimy hide smock that he was wearing up until recently. He still wears his rugged leather foot strip wraps.

Speaking clearly, but perhaps carefully, Maeriks speaks in Dannein, "Well, Rutcrana said that I should ask the questions that I had when I decided to come to Old Island. The first question is this: Do you have any more of those berries and any more of that cook powder that you had in that other bag?"

Thorn says he thinks so maybe, in the backpack back at the cabin.

Maeriks shakes his head in agreement, as if satisfied with the answer, then continues, "The second question is this: Can I have those berries and that cook powder that you have in the back bag?"

Thorn says yes. Surely. He thinks the supplies are going to be used in a dinner coming up. Maeriks is welcome to that stuff and any of the other food and spices.

Maeriks nods again, and even smiles. "Alright. I will get it when we get back to the kitchen. Just tell me which bag it is in when we get there."

Enjoying the exchange, Thorn asks if he had any other questions, any other ideas or things to say.

Maeriks looks at Thorn, and at the greatsword slung over Thorn's back, and then back to the ground as he walks. After a pause he says, "Well, after I saw that big sword, I thought of another question. It's this: I bet you must have had to raid a really high wall stone house with a king in it to get a hold on a sword that big." He looks over at Thorn with enthusiasm, as if to see if he was correct on this guess.

After walking for a while further, when the group is crossing the clearing behind the cabin, Maeriks says in a lower volume, looking down. "You must have hit Rigin in the head with that sword because there was a lot of blood and he had a big cut, but he was still walking around. If he jumps out again, I hope you are going to chop at his legs with that sword. If you cut his legs all the way off, then he could not walk around at all I don't think. He could never take a step anywhere ever again. I hope that is what happens."

Previously Note to Ezeriah...
Rutcrana walks past Kray on the deck, glaring at him as she walks back into the cabin. She seems to have an angry look on her face. She just asked Thorn to accompany Maeriks on a walk through the woods to retrieve some items off of the body of Fingol by the pier. Ivor says he wants to look for his net, so the whole group of three guys leaves, heading out back. Kray finds himself alone with Rutcranna.

He walks in the cabin and sees her busy moving pots around and pouring water in the kitchen. She still looks irritated. He tries to ask a few questions, to get a conversation going (questions detailed above).

"You want answers do you?" she launches, glaring at Kray with a stern look. "Well before you add any more questions to your list of review, Regent Yuoric Lord, why don't you answer a question of mine?"

Kray is just caught a bit off his footing and cannot gather a thing to say before she continues, "What kind of nerve do you have coming here and calling out to a name like that?"

Kray is confused. "Do you know what could happen if you keep mouthing that name out loud? Do you even know what force you are toying with?"

Kray is still at a loss, likely now shifting to becoming angry. "What are you talking about?"

Rutcrana glares even more furious. "Do you think I do not hear what is spoken in my own domain, Lucreides Mercon? Am I the one who is foolish then and not you?! You know full well what I am talking about. Play me a fool again at your own peril, novice!" She purses her lips and scrunches her brow together, tilting her head very slightly forward in a stare.

Kray blinks his eyes. In his mind, it burst forth as if it is real...https://dl.dropbox.com/s/r832mfr2dkbayeg/Ithaqua%20cut.JPG

Just as quickly, it is gone. Kray sees Rutcranna again. He sees her gaze turn slowly from anger and then soften in a questioning look of speculation.

Kray has to turn away. He puts a hand on a table briefly to steady himself, then pushes it away and stares right back at Rutcranna.

The witch tilts her head with a puzzled look. With a soft voice, she speaks. "You do not know do you? You cannot hear his calling for you."

She picks up a cup and pours some clear water from a pitcher.

"Sit down, Lucreides." She brings the cup over to him. Her hand is suddenly in his and she pulls him over and sits him in a stool. "It has been a hot day in the swamp, and the sun has cooked out all of the water from your skin. Drink this and recover."

Rutcranna puts a hand on his shoulder and slides it down softly. Her touch is comforting.

She turns and starts moving pots and pouring water in the kitchen.

"I will answer your questions. I know that you want to help and need to know the threat that you face."

Still shifting things around and moving supplies, she continues "We should start over, you and I. I will not assume that you are one of Nemes Zaituc's demon worshipper lackeys. You should not assume that I am an untrustworthy manipulative whore hag spawn."

She brings him a fresh fruit of some sort, something like a pineapple, and cuts it into pieces in front of him.

"You came here to make money by kidnapping my daughter from me. You will come to find out that it was Fate that brought us together, not the rapist pirate occult wizard Nemes Zaituc. You need help, dear Kray. And I am someone who can help you."
OOC:
Yo, Ez. Heavy stuff, right? I want to continue this by PM over the weekend if you are willing. As it turned out, this is a very strange but important opportunity that I want to jump on. Convo that happens b/t Rutcranna and Kray while everyone else is out in the woods. Lot to write, but I think it will be worth it.

It's this: I bet you must have had to raid a really high wall stone house with a king in it to get a hold on a sword that big." He looks over at Thorn with enthusiasm, as if to see if he was correct on this guess.
Thorn is taken aback, slightly. The big man's query is almost word-for-word the same question he had asked Urdav, when he was six or seven. Urdav had scowled at him when he had guessed where the old man might have received his weapon. In his short, gruff way, he'd simply said, "Yes, boy. I stole it from a king."

A few years later, when Thorn's voice had changed and he had pestered Urdav into showing him how to use the blade, Urdav had let on, over a few days, just what it meant for him to steal a blade from a king. He told Thorn that he had fought in the army of a lesser Yuoric lord against a Dannein clan; a clan related to his mother's own clan. He had never told the lord he had Dannein blood in his veins. Coin was coin, and he had given himself to the task of battling the so-called foes of his lord. Victory that day was a Yuoric victory. The Dannein clan leader and his right-hand warrior were brought before the Yuoric lord. As the order was given for their execution, Urdav looked into the face of the second-in-command and recognized the man. He had played with this man when they both were children and his mother had taken him home to visit her family. He was hit with memories of swimming, hunting, and tree-climbing. "It's a funny thing, Thorn. What finally breaks a man. It's not what I expected." Apparently Urdav had protested the execution. All he would tell Thorn after that was that he escaped with his life and the sword—which he had taken from the Yuoric lord he slew in defense of a Dannein whose name he could not remember.

Thorn smiles sadly. "That's a good question, Maeriks. I actually got the sword from my Da." Thorn raises an eyebrow and leans in closer. "But he took it from a king."

"Thank your for the advice, brother. I will aim for the legs next time I meet Rigin."

Maeriks nodds his head and smiles to himself after hearing Thorn's words.
OOC:
He comes just short of doing a fist pump/pull "YISSS!!!"
Maeriks, Thorn, and Ivor reach the front ground level porch and enter into the cabin. They see Rutcranna working in the kitchen she has a fire going. The back door to the high deck overlooking the lake is open. They can see Kray walking outside on the deck.

"Good, my boy." Rutcranna comes up and takes the small bag with the tongue out of Maerik's hand. She takes it and puts in a larger shoulder bag that she has on a workshop table. Ivor makes sure that she does not take it anywhere near the kitchen.

"Now you go out front right now and put those sandals on. Wrap them up tight to the top." She says. Maeriks stops and looks surprised. "That's right. You heard me. And take those sad strips that you have off of your feet and throw them in the rubbish heap out in the pit by the willow. Those things look terrible, Maeriks. No wonder you are always sore and somber. But now you will be ready to march."

Maeriks looks satisfied and straight, he turns to go outside. "Hurry up though, Mac Hannoc. After you are shod, get to work right away on the meats. There are two muskrats and one oposssum hanging outside. Skin them right. Use the table on the side porch. I only want the racks, so put the innards in the clay bowl outside on the cut table. Do not spill any of them out either. Put the heads in the bowl too. Hang the skins on the line beside the others. And don't leave any hair on those racks. There is water and a brush out in a bucket by the table."

Maeriks listens attentively and signals that he understands.

"And like I just said, do not drag your feet with these chores. You have a lot to do still. I have to pack and prepare other things, so you will be in charge of the pots right when you get back here in the kitchen. So start thinking of what you are going to use. I have a whole shelf and table full that I will prepare for you. I'm getting these fires going, but you are going to have to take over and quick."

Maeriks turns around with purpose when he is released, but then stops to hear Rutcranna's last call. "After dinner and cleaning you have to get your armor and weapons too, so snap to it and do a good work, you bull."

Maeriks stands up straight. Nods his head up and down slowly. He looks over at Thorn. His gaze is stern, and he nods at his new friend. Then he pivots to the door, stepping out onto the front porch with a strong swagger.
Jun 2, 2017 2:58 pm
Maeriks works quickly and efficiently, tho a little sloppier than Rutcranna may have liked. The muskrats skinned, then set to cook in a pot of soup. Various roots and tubers are prepped and dropped into the soup after the muskrat fats can be seen shimmering on the surface of the boiling water. The opossum is skinned and roasted on a stick over the open flame, getting a nice crisp to it. While continually turning the opossum with an intense focus, Maeriks regularly sticks a fat finger into the soup very quickly, mumurs "ouch", and licks the soup off. After about an hour of prep he gathers up an assorted collection of bowls and hands out a serving to everyone. It's pretty damned good, actually, and more filling than you would have thought.

No Long Rest now. This is a Short Rest, probably somewhere between 1 hour and 2 hours total. So Ez is right there.

I do want to audible accept this effort though, just for theatrics and as a cool intro and great timing in the story. With the layout of the kitchen and the ingredients shelf at a witch cabin. When else does that ever happen? Maeriks' first thing he really gets put in charge of on the team, a big reset/recover right after a big exhausting battle - it just fits.

But let's say it counts for the next Long Rest effort on the burn of the effect. So you can't do another Gourmand HP boost dinner at the next Long Rest if you have this one deliver the effects now.

Anyone is welcome to roll to take advantage of this boost can do so. I even say that you can use this HP roll/recovery first before your own Short Rest Hit Dice rolls. For those of you who have already rolled those dice, feel free to adjust backwards as you see fit. If the Gourmand boost gets you to max or the number you want before having to use the HD rolls you did, then just save those as still available and not yet spent even if they were already posted earlier.

I think that is acceptable as an exception, but CB can make the final call if he just wants to leave it exactly to the rules as it is and save the Long Rest Cook Out for later. But if that is the case, and always will be the case, that it means you have to have access to some decent stuff to cook with and a reasonable environment for cooking, etc. That may not be the situation upcoming.
