Rutcranna has not pulled all the way up tight with the front group. Instead maintaining the edge of the visibility of the rear lights at about 30' away. Thorn would be ahead of her 10' unless he swam back to her. From Thorn, the rest of the crowd would be conglomerating about 15' ahead of him unless he swam forward, so about 25' away from Rutcranna to the front.

Review on Visibility:
Clear vision 15'
Shadowy images and perception of lights, around 30 - 35'

It takes all of Ivor's considerable swimming skill to not get turned around in Maeriks' wake. He pauses for a heartbeat so as not to skewer the oaf with his trident. In that space Ivor curses himself for not bringing a dagger. Didn't Conall always say that no self-respecting diver goes in without a good knife? Ivor grasps his trident two handed and drives the weapon at the Deep One's belly.

Ivor
BR2

Attack: hit

Ivor's trident plunges into the creature's torso. All three prongs sink to full length into the central body cavity. The Deep One clinches tight only briefly, then falls completely limp and lifeless, still wrapped in the net.
Jun 24, 2017 3:42 pm
Ivor grabs and gathers the net, letting the slain Deep One drift away and sink into the murky depths. With a signal to Maeriks to regroup he swims to rejoin the others.

Once we regroup we should press on. If it works for everyone we should collapse the formation to two wide behind Hinka, as described in the OOC; it will keep the group tighter, safer, more versatile. Only go single file if we have to.

Trying to stay vigilent and observe all directions, ready for an attack from any side, Maeriks keeps pace with Ivor as they regroup.
OOC:
Ah sorry, went out of turn. Disregard if anything else happens TR3

I agree, if there are more coming at us, hopefully we can defend each other.

Absolutely. Apparently we were swimming with 15 feet between use before the attack; I'd like to tighten that up to "As Close As I Can Get Without Getting Kicked By Kray" if possible. It was frustrating in this little skirmish to be equidistant from both sets of action and to not know either was even going on until both were almost over. Ideally we're close enough to each other so that we can all see everyone's little bobs of light!

Agreed.

Yep. Given navigation and following for the swim, maybe 10 feet between each character (left to right, front to back) would work. Anything to keep it tighter. This formation, unless we have to go single file, with the first initial of each character used:

- H -
B K
T R

The group consolidates and remains on the lookout for a while, to see if the lead creature might come back into view. It never does.

Pressing on, the team swims onward through the wrecked columns and stones littered along the lake floor. Soon they see a wide staircase rising out of the mud and leading into a pitch black opening - the low underwater entrance of the Ziggurat.

The dark red light is the first in, as Hinka leads the way. The light reflects off of the stone walls, floor, and ceiling of what must have been a large hallway in the past, the edges of the light limit surging and moving on with every stroke through the water of the Tochoan guide. As everyone else follows into the once-dark stone tunnel, their own bulb colors mix in on the light cast. Soon the hallway is lit with a kaleidoscope of colors that is both impressive and eerie at once. Beyond Hinka's front red light is only continual darkness, a wall of the limit of vision.

After pressing on for 50 meters or so, the hallway opens up into a grand room. Though the floor and all walls are still coated with brown and green algae and muck, and a layer of silt sits on the floor, visibility in this interior chamber is extended because of the lack of current and debris. With the glow of the living bulbs extending outward now, everyone can see ahead in all directions for about 40 feet before the edges of detail become difficult to discern.

At the outer edge of sight ahead, the group sees the beginning of an upward staircase, one that runs the entire length of the room (more like a veranda or courtyard split-level rise of stairs, not like a hallway leading up to another hall or room).

To the immediate right and left, the group can see the feet and shins of giant statues that rise upward disappearing into the darkness. The statues are apparently standing with backs to the entrance wall, on either side of the doorway, facing inward into this large room.

Hinka leads the way ahead, swimming roughly 15' higher than the ground. Everyone maintains their directional sense, but the enormity of the room is unnerving. They swim upward, following the line of the rising stairs at the back of the room. Soon the floor levels back off, and the group finds themselves swimming in between massive columns distributed about. The columns have a base diameter of roughly 7', and they rise up and disappear into the darkness, perhaps meeting with a ceiling that is 50' tall or more.

Hinka checks backwards, and then continues on, his red light bathing more and more of the scene going forward, gradually revealing the ghostly gloom of this bizarre scum-covered ruin.

Shadowy at first, huge broken rocks and at least a fallen column or two, come into view. Then emerging into the light as if it was living and lurching forward - a colossal face made of vast carved stone, the head of some great statue lying on its side. Its features are sharp and angular, casting long shadows and pits from the light of the bulbs, despite the layer of muck and silt that has settled upon it.

The giant melancholy emotionless face is shocking, casting a hulking gaze of doom out from the red light and into the underwater tomb scene. It is difficult not to falter as Hinka looks back and pulls everyone forward with a wave, motioning to swim up and over the giant head of the fallen statue and the large rock stones scattered all around it.

As they begin to swim upward to follow Hinka, movement is seen from the shadows and corners of the rocks and nooks and broken columns all around.

At the edge of the light radius, the creatures lurch forward, sliding out into the open. Deep Ones. Wretched looking humanoids that look like dark skinned men but with fish-like features. They wear only tattered clothes if anything at all. In their clawed hands most hold barbed spears and jagged serrated knives that curve to sharp points. Their bulging eyes reflect a hollow blackness, glazed over with a horrifying cloudy gleam in the lights.

In front of the great stone face of the underwater statue, the party is surrounded. The Deep Ones, at least a dozen in number, slink out from their hiding places among the ruins and slowly begin to close in from all sides.

Not sure exactly how many. 12+
Distance varies. Closest are 30'. Furthest are out at the end of clear vision at around 45'.
The group was about to ascend, but stopped before increasing height from ground, hovering at about 12-15' from the floor.

Thanks, Ox. Good Initiative roll for the team. A win even without Mods.

Thorn looks around to make sure he can see everyone. We waves to grab attention, then makes a motion that circles the group and points down. Shall we make our stand on the floor, to keep things from attacking us from underneath? After this, he makes a motion of bringing his hands together. Keep tight together.
OOC:
With the closest of the Deep Ones a good 30 feet away still, I say we clump together facing outward, and let them come at us first round. No use swimming off after them yet. Also, with the 3D space in water, would it be good to have the floor right beneath us to cut off that line of attack?
Jun 25, 2017 5:17 am
OOC:
Sounds like they are already below us.
Maeriks prepares a second javelin, ready to fire it off at the first one that comes within good range (no disadvantage on the roll). Other than that he wants to stay close and tight with the group.
OOC:
Revising now that I understand we aren't exposed on the bottom, I'm posting a change to the action.

Since the closest of them is 30 feet, and the floor is 12-15 feet below us, how do you figure?

OOC:
The creatures have not yet been able to take positions below the group, but judging by the movements of the close ones, that is probably their intent.
With Initiative won, the group could shift downward a length and help cut off the low-angle avenues of approach, as X suggests.
Jun 25, 2017 11:46 am
I think making a stand at the bottom back to back seems like the best option at the moment.
Jun 25, 2017 5:34 pm
Ah, I read "the group was about to ascend" as the enemy group. In that case, we should go down.
