DMJ says:
The sideways shimmy climb is a very narrow trimwork line in the rock wall, mixed with making your own hand holds in little cracks in the blocks. About a 25' slide on the close wall, turn the corner, a 80' wall stretch along the full length of the room, then another 25' back to the balcony on the far side wall, A tough task, no doubt. That's pretty much "Second Story Work" for a real rock climber or thief. You can bank on 1 or more DC checks in the 14+ range. As you might have guessed, this is little Hinka's preference if it were just he himself. At the same time, he understands a concern that the entire team may have a tough time making it across with no mistakes.
How far above the water would the climber be? Would we need to worry about the Pool Tool's reach from that high up?

How far up is the ceiling in this room? Is it just a flat ceiling, or are there any distinguishing characteristics?

Does Hinka know if the monster is capable of leaving its pool? What are the chances it climbs out and pulls a Mines-of-Moria to collapse the tunnel around us?

Hippa haxital'ipol. Maeriks turns the creature's name over in his mind, feeling it take shape into an image... but not really an image, just a feeling about the thing. Standing there, listening to the planning discussion, he quietly tests out several moaning, buzzing, and squeaking sounds, trying to imagine what a Hippa haxital'ipol would sound like. Big creature in small pool like that is like alligator stuck in pond during dry season. No food, always hungry. Always wanting to find new place to be. He stares for a long moment at the path the group came into the room, forming a thought.

"It's hungry" he says to the group, breaking his silence while listening to the planning. "Get food to feed it." He points back the way the group came, toward the great hall and the dozen plus bodies laying in the silt there.

Maeriks wants to go back and retrieve as many bodies as possible, lashing them to a rope and towing them to the Hippo-Tool.
This would mean a longer delay before progressing and two more trips past the eels. The payoff would be dumping half a dozen or more bodies into the Hippo-Tool-Pool to let the thing gorge itself and then the party can swim past in relative safety.

I'd also like to give Maeriks a chance to try figuring out how to talk to the thing, which might be possible if it ends up being occupied well enough by the bodies. In narration it would be Maeriks taking some time to figure out what noises the thing responds to and imitating it until he can pick up some meaning. In game mechanics it would be a ritual casting of Speak with Animals - which would need to be cleared by DMJ. There might even be a chance that the Hippo-Tool wants out of the Hippo-Tool-Pool, an opportunity to make an ally. Who knows. I'm excited by that thought at least! (Even if it does end up with Maeriks making gurgling sounds with his head under water before a big tentacle loops around his neck and pulls him in to a Sarlacc belly to be digested for a millennia.)

Realquick: Not a fan of that plan. It might trigger the alarm, is time consuming, added risk with eels. Too much of a gamble for some hopefully and maybe type results.

OOC:
Mechanically Ivor is the best climber (20 STR, Athletics, and CTC) and even story-wise, his clan were expert climbers. He's got some rope, too! But why not just send Hinka? :-D

Lol. Make use of "disposable" NPCs.

Ezeriah says:

[color="blue"]More Questions for Hinka: Does he know if the creature has good senses? Perhaps it's blind (as an creature that lives in the dark 100% of the time) and it's other senses are limited? How deep is the Tool's water tank below us? I understand he might not have all of those answers.

OOC:
Hinka thinks the creature has all senses, all effective in the water. It's primary are smell and a sort of feeling of movement in the water, but it is not blind. It can detect light. They are not always used in darkness or underground pools.

Water is probably 3 stories deep (so around 30-40 feet).

OOC:
Climber above water about 10-12 feet. Not sure whether tentacles could reach, but probably so, especially if it surges up out of the water on the wall or something.

Ceiling is high and vaulted, arching upward in complex decorative structures. For the first time I think, Hinka mentions that there are some columns in the room, spaced periodically. Some go from ceiling to floor, so they emerge from the water. Others are broken and have sunk to the floor beneath the water.

A crushing tentacle collapse of the tunnel seems out of the question. Not that kind of monster, not that kind of strength. It can operate on land for short distances but will seek to avoid it. It is very slow on land, and certainly more vulnerable. Hinka doubts it will merge. It's charge is likely to clean and protect the pool and act as a warning sentry.

OOC:
Mechanically Ritual Cast will be OK - we could hammer it out on that. If this option is to be explored, CB I'd ask that you give some rules research to advise the limits of what can be affected by that spell. The Hippo-Pool-Tool is not a classic animal; I would consider it in game terms an Aberration.

Sending in that investigation check.
Thorn investigates the room, looking for hidden doors or false blocks, anything that might be a hidden structure.

On one of the large tables, he finds that one of the bricks shifts in a strange way. With a little more manipulation, he slides the brick and hears a click. Soon he discovers that another brick is loose. He pulls forward and it slides forward, as if on a track. Thorn carefully takes control of the weight of the block with both hands and shifts the large stone to the top of the table.

Inside the table is a large compartment. Hinka, very excited at the development, walks over and helps in the investigation.

Thorn sifts through cabinet opening and draws forth an old box, that is wrapped in a crumbled sack. The container is covered in dust and grime. He sits it on the table, pulling away the tattered threads and decayed cloth.

A bone case, still covered in dust and grime, sits on the table. It is about 18" L x 8" W x 5" D.

Hinka is smiling ear to ear. Looking at the box and at Thorn, clapping him on the back. He is talking in a happy tone in his low steady voice, towards Thorn as if he can understand him.

He seems so delighted at the find, complimentary to Thorn, and excited at the anticipation of opening the box. Like a kid in a candy store with a friend.

Thorn looks toward Kray, then Bryn and Rutcranna, not understanding a word of what the little fellow is uttering, but able to tell he's very excited.

"What's our guide saying?"

Before anyone can respond, Thorn continues.

"Also, ask him if the pool is the only way in to wherever they're holding the girls. I'm all for sneaking across and hoping the alarm doesn't detect us, but are we going to be bringing rescued folk back across the pool?"

Kray can get the gist of what Hinka is saying.
OOC:
Ez, proceeding here to reveal. Figured you would have Kray do the 80% translation to Thorn and anyone listening.
Hinka is just happy that Thorn was able to find some loot. Hinka had been to this chamber once before, and had looked around briefly, but he was very fearful last time because the whole compound was crawling with Deep Ones last time. He never found the secret compartment, but Thorn was smart to look.

Priests and (some unknown word) often keep treasure in their altars and (unknown word). It is very exciting to see that Thorn scored this loot. It is probably going to be rich surprise. This is an expert steal. Nice work, Thorn.

When Thorn goes to open the box, Hinka reaches up to warn and advise. Kray passes the message on to Thorn. It takes a couple of back and forth exchanges Kray to Hinka, to clarify the message, but Hinka says be careful with that old latch. It may have a needle trap on it. Probably doesn't work its so old and probably the lock is seized up too anyway. It is better to just crack the box, let it break on either the latch or the back hinges, whichever will give first.

Hinka finds a couple of appropriately sized rocks and can offer a technique. He also has a small awl wedge as well.

Helping Thorn, Hinka turns the box up on its side longways on the stone table. He holds it steady and points to a specific place for Thorn to hit it with the rock. One. Two. Three hits. Good.

Hinka advises Thorn to lay the box down. Hinka uses his tool and a smaller rock as another improvised hammer. Two good hits on the small wedge and the chunky locking mechanism is cracked away from the structure. The box itself, thought to be bone at first, seems to be made of something stronger. Though damaged a bit, the box is still largely intact except for the now broken clasp and lock mechanism in the front panel.

Excited and pressing Thorn on, Hinka calls for the opening of the box lid. Thorn does. Littered with the mostly dissolved threads and dust of what was once an inner bag or satchel ... a large pile of sky-blue gemstones fill the box!

How does Hinka know so much about the Hippo-Tool? He has observed it eating? What does it eat? Dors RT know about this creature?

Bryns eyes widen at the sight of all the gems but he bites his tongue. "So what's the plan? I don't feel like waiting around for more fish men."

OOC:
I'm picturing this as coming up in conversation back and forth, maybe with Maeriks keeping up more and more questions about the creature, but not really getting answers or not getting anyone buying into his plan. Since only Kray can sort of talk to Hinka, and so far Rutcranna has been staying out of debate and talk, meditating over on top of one of the big tables in the far corner.
Rutcranna hears the increasing volume of talk and debate about the upcoming room and creature, and then the talk of the treasure box and the hammering and banging that follows. She breaks from her meditation and surveys the interchange, looking for a while to see what everyone is dwelling upon.

Seeing Maeriks frustrated asking Hinka how he knows so much about the creature, but Hinka distracted talking to Kray and Thorn and enjoying the find of the box, Rutcranna calls out to the big man. "Maeriks!," she says, motioning him over to her table. She shifts to where her legs are hanging off the side of the big stone block. When Maeriks comes up, he stands in front of her and she has her hands down on the edge of table beside her.

She asks why he is so worried about this creature. When he explains his questions, she tells talks to him a little about the creature and the Tochoans. Below is the gist of it from her,
OOC:
(kind of in her voice, but not going to write exact narrative quotes)
:

That creature that Hinka knows about is not going to be like a regular animal. She knows that Maeriks can hear the voices of many animals, but this one is going to have a different sort of voice that he will not be able to understand. Sort of like the krekutils. They are sort of familiar, but you can't really talk to them like other fish and alligators and fur animals. This is because some of the creatures around here are from a really far away place. And many of them have lived for a long long time, all the way to another era. They are from a place and time very different from ours, so they are kind of like foreigners. You just can't understand them and it's just hard to figure out their ways.

Hinka says that animal cleans the water, so it probably eats dirt or anything that gets in the pool. Even slime or trash or weeds or little minnows. But then it will probably eat a person if it gets that too. But then if it doesn't get anything to eat at all, it can probably still live just fine too. It might not have to eat every day like a regular animal. For that thing, eating or not eating is normal. It's strange, but it's that way because he is from so far away where things are different.

The Tcho-Tchos know a lot about these type of creatures because of their race. Their parents and ancestors go back a long long way too. The Tcho-Tchos of the past were workers for really powerful creatures. Some of the creatures were very smart and powerful. The Tcho-tchos of the past were like animal managers for these weird animals from another place and another time. Now the Tcho-Tchos don't know as much about creatures as their ancestors did, because many of the creatures are gone now, but the little people still know alot. They learn stories about the different creatures from the past. They are sort of like farmers of weird foreigner animals, and they pass the information down from generation to generation. They are sort of like Old Maegel and his son Ollif. You remember them? They were farmers. Knew everything about pigs and goats and water buffalo. The Tcho-Tcho are sort of like them, but the Tcho-Tcho know a lot about foreigner animals from far away too.

So Hinka is probably right in what he says. And probably this creature will not cooperate with us no matter what. Even if you try to talk to him and help him, he probably will not talk to you at all and he will probably try to wrap you up and bite you.

At the later part of the talk she puts her hands on Maeriks' shoulder, pulling him close to show she cares about him and what he is say, and she's trying to support him even if this info is kind of frustrating.

But don't you worry. We can get by him one way or another. And after that, we are going to get to Rhone and some of the other girls from home. And you know what? You are going to be able to save them. They are very scared, but they are going to be so excited to see you, coming in so strong and powerful, like a bold raider. Some of them will probably want to be your wife right away.

And you know what she thinks? She thinks that when they see Gorolach, he will be shaking like a leaf in a tree when he sees you, Maeriks. He won't realize how strong you are now. You need to get ready to beat Gorolach in a fight, Maeriks. There is going to be more fighting coming up really soon.

Gorolach wants to kill me and kill Rhone. He will want to kill you too when he sees you, Maeriks. He hates you. Because he hates your father Mahan. And he hates that Hannoc was the father of all of your fathers. And when he sees you he will want to beat you and kill you. But I know that he won't be able to if you fight back hard enough. You have to fight as hard as you can and don't stop fighting no matter what.

Even though Gorolach may have scared you a lot in the past, maybe he even hurt you, you have no reason to fear him now. You are stronger than he is. I want you to beat him to death, Maeriks. Do you understand? Now you ready your resolve, Maeriks son of Mahan son of Hannoc. We are close and I need you to be ready to be a Champion.

While Rutcranna tries to ease Maeriks frustration, Kray irons out some details with Hinka, translating as needed for the rest. Exchanging some words and ideas, Kray outlines a plan, then addresses the group as a whole. "...so Hinka gets across, I bow shot the rope over, we tie it off at both ends then cross one at a time, lightest to heaviest. I'll go first, test it out." The trace of a half-smile showed for a moment as his tone was almost bordering on actual levity. "See if the Fates are ready to cut."

Kray lets the summation of the plan hang for a few seconds, then continues. "Any concerns or ideas, better now than later. Otherwise time's wasting."

Kray would also ask Hinka's advice on muffling the arrow with some kind of tight cloth wrap or something, if that's even necessary (I imagine it's not a difficult shot at all). Our lights shouldn't be an issue for the Tool; IIRC it can't see. J, please correct me if I'm mistaken and Hinka thinks the light will matter.

Besides that, I'm ready to go.
