Moss tries to see if any guards are near the waterfall, and continues his way to the gate.
Seeing that Elspa and Rygnar are not there anymore, Moss looks for traces leading to where they decided to make camp to bring their food.

First things first, Elspa lights a torch to inspect the cave. She sniffs the air, hoping to catch the scent of animal over the stench surrounding her.

After Rygnar's silence and distant following, he closes the distance he left between himself and Elspa as she stands at the cave entrance. In a low voice, he mumbles "Elspa...do I hold you back?"
Apr 10, 2017 8:32 pm
"What?" asks the barbarian, sticking the torch further into the cave. "Since when are we racing?"
Apr 10, 2017 9:04 pm
"Not racing. I'm talking about the village. Did you stay behind because of me, do I hold you back? Instead of feasting on food with Jarveena and comfy sleeping spots, you're stuck with Rygnar in cave."

"I don't trust that place," snorts Elspa. "It don't seem right, even if they look human. That strange stick may be sucking out more than the poison smell, and did you see those masks? No eyes. How do they see?" She shakes her head. "This is how we lived, and it got us this far. Feasting and comfort only make you fat and lazy if you aren't careful."

She pauses. "Why did you not go in?"

A brief smiles crosses Rygnar's lips before fading "I thought the same about the masks." he steps in front of Elspa, drawing his greatsword "My place will always be by your side, there is no Rygnar without Elspa."

He takes a deep breath then lets out a roar into the cave and takes a defensive stance in front of Elspa, in case anything has the nerve to be in their shelter.

MOSS
OOC:
You notice no guards or anything else of interest near waterfall, except for the fact that the figure is going there.
Tracking Elspa and Rygnar would normally be a challenging task. However, the fact that they could only have gone one of two ways is helpful, and you come across an algae-strewn rock that has been overturned and not yet dried in the sun that points you in the correct direction.
OOC:
We will have to advance Elspa and Rygnar's story a bit further before carrying on, so stay tuned.

ELSPA AND RYGNAR

A preliminary sniff of the cave air reveals no animal presence. You light your torch and walk inside a ways, and the light dances along jagged rocks that you can barely squeeze between. After following the tight path, you find the cave opens up into a larger space. Shafts of light pierce the darkness revealing grand spires of stone, creating a space reminiscent of a cathedral. A flat stone wall directly ahead is covered with primitive pictograms and symbols. There is an opening that goes further underground in the center of that wall.

Elspa sniffs the air again, habitually, ignoring the pictograms. She steps to the side of the opening in the wall and sticks the torch in to light the interior.

FRICK, JARVEENA, and YGNE

In response to Ygne's comments

She Who Has Been Beyond the Reef stiffens at the mention of the Troglodytes returning to life.

"Yes, it is true that the spirit does not leave the body after dying here. The way to the lands of the dead are closed here, ever since the Gods bound the demon Ulupoka here. Although Ulupoka cannot leave, bound to a giant black pearl in his golden temple, he snares the dead and sets them to evil purposes. Our people were once his slaves, until some among us learned to free the dead from his grasp. We call them Spirt Mothers; you saw one on your way here, the woman in the white mask. She guides our ancestors to continue to help our village rather than accomplish Ulupoka's evil plans. Now we live far away from his temple, protected by the Great Wall, the Sea, and the Spirit Mothers."

"Far away, aye. Thass where we wanna go. But we goan need a bigger boat. Our shitty raft ain' goan last in these waters."
Apr 11, 2017 6:42 am
Ygne isn't so rude as to be blatantly inattentive, but it is easy to see that much of what She Who Has Been Beyond the Reef says goes far over the thief's head. After swallowing another mouthful of food, she nods her head in agreement with Jarveena, "To get to the big island. A strong boat. His Majesty said something about turtles."
Apr 11, 2017 12:52 pm
Frick thinks for a moment, then speaks slowly in between bites of food, "If there's a demon stopping us from leaving, then we'll just have to kill it, right?"

ELSPA, RYGNAR

You sniff the air beyond the tunnel: it is cool, moist, and smells of brine and fish guts.

The opening leads to a tunnel which slopes downward into the earth. It too is lined in symbols and pictographs, but a short ways down those markings are subsumed by a slick, green algae that coats the tunnel from floor to ceiling.

MOSS

There is no sign of the two barbarians, but in the far distance you see an opening in the cliff wall that looks like it would make a defensible shelter.

FRICK, JARVEENA, YGNE

She Who Has Been Beyond the Reef listens to your comments, but there is hesitance in her voice when she responds.

"If you want to go to the big island, you can arrange passage with the Boat Man on the other side of this island. He leaves at noon and returns an hour before night falls, so if you want to make it there today you will have to take your little boat."

You notice she makes no comment about Frick's brazen statement.

"But, hey! Before you leave, I am sure you have things to trade. Your people always do. And I have found that your people often treat like junk what we treasure, and what you treasure we treat like junk. I'll gather our craftsmen and meet you outside when you finish your meal."

ELSPA, RYGNAR

Elspa briefly inspects the moss, giving it a sniff to see if it's something she could use. Beyond that, she looks down at the floor to see if there are any tracks that might indicate that something moved through the passage.

CancerMan says:
Elspa briefly inspects the moss, giving it a sniff to see if it's something she could use.
It appears to be merely the garden variety sea slime that appears on beeches around the world. It is edible and some believe it wards against certain diseases that develop when your hair turns gray.
CancerMan says:
Beyond that, she looks down at the floor to see if there are any tracks that might indicate that something moved through the passage.
You see two kinds of tracks in the green slick on the rocks. One resembles bare human feet, the other is clawed with webbing between the toes.

"This gets better and better," Ygne says, smiling brightly. She'll finish her food in haste, eager to see what the villagers have to trade.
Apr 12, 2017 10:38 am
At the entry of the cave, since his hands are full and he doesn't have a torch on him, Moss shouts...

Elspa !! Rygnar !! Anyone here !! Food's gonna get cold soon !!
