Chapter 3: Meeting The Natives

Elspa looks down at Jarveena's body, then to Rygnar. "Fine, if you can't fix it I guess I have to. Tell me and my companions how to stop these dead folk from moving again. Despite the satisfaction of killing something twice, it's very annoying."
May 14, 2017 11:04 am
Ygne, crouched low beside Frick, spins on her heels when she hears Jarveena splash into the water. She reaches out helplessly as the ancestors descend upon her companion. "N-no.." Ygne says, attempting to shout but not managing, in her shock, to say anything above a breathy mutter.

At the grotesque sight of the bodies exploding, Ygne goes wide eyed and blinks repeatedly, as though expecting the sight to change with a second viewing. She can only blame some dark magic of the ancestors, and she feels the weight of Jarveena's loss settle on her chest. For a brief moment, she ponders collecting all of the copper coins - that is why she is here, after all -
but she remains resolute in her priorities. "We need to leave," She says to Frick's unconscious form, preparing to draw him up, across her shoulders.
May 15, 2017 8:59 am
Jarveena wakes covered in gore, taking huge gulping breaths and moaning incoherently, limbs flailing in a feeble attempt to ward of what she's just seen. It's unclear whether she is aware of Rygnar and Elspa standing over her.
May 15, 2017 9:29 am
Rygnar opens his resting eyes as Jarveena comes back to consciousness, he doesn't stand or move. He speaks in a voice that only Elspa has heard and only ever when it was just the two of them alone, it is soft and caring; void of any hint of hatred or anger "Relax, warrior, you are safe."

MOSS and YGNE

The villagers are a mess of shock and horror, but there is enough anger in some to give them focus. She Who Has Been Beyond the Reef returns into human form and translates Moss's instructions. Within moments, a sturdy rope is brought forward, and a line of villagers forms to anchor it. Moss descends into the slick ravine, moving efficiently down the slope with his healing kit slung over his shoulder. At the bottom, he expertly applies his healing craft, and Frick awakens.
OOC:
Frick goes to 11 HP and cannot be the recipient of Moss's healing again until after a long rest. (Deadpool, please double check I mathed that one right. Feel free to RP that scene further if you wish)

I'm not sure what Ygne's action was but you can still take one. There is a rope for climbing now, and 2 Ancestors in the ravine with you.

Rolls

Climb check (athletics, DC 10 with rope) - (1d20+0)

(17) = 17

Healing feat restores this many HP: - (1d6+9)

(2) + 9 = 11

May 15, 2017 4:23 pm
OOC:
The math is spot on, but I can do it again after a short or long rest... It's just that I have a limited quantity of healing kit to use... 9 left after the one I just used.
Arriving at the bottom of the ravine, I check Frick's vitals to realise he has been stabilised already. You did well Ygne, now get up the rope. Hurry we don't want to stay here if we don't have to... Localising the worst wound, a large knife stab on the side that pierce his chain shirt. He quickly gets to work while Frick was still unconscious, cutting some dead skin and then filling the wound with a herbal paste that dulls pain and promotes recovery, then bandaging it with a practiced efficiency. Moss then slaps Frick hard, making him wake up with an audible gasp, told you I'd keep you alive, now move your ass up that rope if you want to fight another day !! As soon as Ygne and Frick are up the rope, Moss starts climbing and yells, PULL UP THE ROPE !! not wanting to stay longer then necessary down there with the two remaining Ancestors...

ELSPA, JARVEENA, and RYGNAR

The voice responds to Elspa.

"Very well. There is an island within the island where a golden temple lies forgotten. In its belly lies a massive black pearl. If the black pearl is destroyed, then bodies of the dead will no longer animate and all of the walking dead will fall, including the monsters that bar you from leaving this island."

One of the corpse's shirt tears open, and symbols and lines crawl across the dead man's flesh. The patch of skin rips from the body and gracefully falls to the ground, curling into a scroll. A thin cord of sinew ties it shut in a neat bow, a the bodies dissolves into sand.

"The humans in the villages would rather plunge a knife in your heart than permit you to accomplish this task. Remember: in the end, we are all but pawns in a larger game. You must choose a side eventually, mighty warriors. Destroying the pearl will result in your freedom from this nightmare. If you fail to do so, your soul will be trapped here forever."
May 15, 2017 5:43 pm
Elspa reaches down to retrieve the scroll, but her hand pauses before she can touch it. "Why do the villagers want this to continue?" she asks, rising back up to address the last floating corpse and leaving the scroll alone.

Now the eldritch voice comes only from the final zombie, and its eyes fix on Elspa. Without hesitation, it says:

"To answer that question, I must tell you of myself. I am Ulupoka, once a God millennia ago. I am also the first to be trapped on this island, although my circumstances were engineered by my enemies rather than by chance like yours."

"The villagers are the descendants of the worshippers of those who trapped me here. They believe they are a chosen people, sworn to protect the black pearl. They think they bear this burden for the good of the world, for the black pearl was built to hold me here, and they believe I will undo all of creation if I become free."

OOC:
If Ygne has an action this round, go for it Momo. After I'll have the remaining Ancestors take their turns.

As Moss works upon Frick, Ygne stands idle to the side. Her mind and body are exhausted, and she finds it hard to concentrate on much now that someone else is here. "Fuck you," Ygne mumbles back to Moss' compliment, signaling the return of her typical charm. She makes no movement toward the rope and instead watches him work upon Frick. Ygne can already feel her bottom lip beginning to swell, and the dull pain in her back and chest only intensifies the longer she stands around. She raises a hand to her mouth and her fingers come away red. She spits a red mess into the water nearby and wipes her bloody nose across her arm.

Once Frick is somewhat patched up, and Ygne sees that he's awake, she wordlessly moves to the rope and ascends to the top.

Frick comes back to consciousness suddenly, once the worst of his wounds are patched up. He gasps and rolls over, throwing up onto the ground next to him. He staggers to his feet and looks around to see what's going on, vision blurry and spinning, "What happened?" he slurs to Ygne, taking a step in her direction.

Once Ygne begins climbing, Frick cracks his neck and slaps himself across the face, using the pain to gain focus as he begins to ascent the rope, taking it as quickly as he can, lest he pass out again from blood loss. Once he's up top, he sits down and smiles up at Ygne, "Told you I wouldn't die here!" he says, as if he wasn't on the verge of death just moments ago.
May 16, 2017 12:04 pm
Ygne looks deathly serious when she gives Frick a firm nod. "You were right," She says in reply, planting her hands on her hips as she tries to take in the current situation. She has to wipe the blood from her nose once more upon her sleeve, by this point.

"And you will, yes?" Elspa asks, temporarily ignoring both the scroll and Jarveena. "Once the pearl is destroyed?"

The Ancestors thrash about in the water but are not fast enough to catch the three as they make their way up the rope. The monstrosities disappear down the dark ravine, tearing away their masks and wrappings as they go.

The villagers are completely wrecked emotionally. Dozens are dead. Children and adults alike are wailing against the backdrop of the silent jungle. But amid the chaos, She Who Has Been Beyond the Reef is gathering her shattered people. Several hunting bows are found and distributed. She approaches the three of you shortly.

"We fall back to behind the waterfall; are you with us?"
OOC:
Combat is over! Will tally up XP soon. Nine rounds was the longest I've ever seen combat go in 5e!

CancerMan says:
"And you will, yes?" Elspa asks, temporarily ignoring both the scroll and Jarveena. "Once the pearl is destroyed?"
"This I vow: I will make those who are responsible for my imprisonment pay for their treachery. I will murder my brothers that imprisoned me, and put them to endless torment. I will murder their followers, and will journey to the Lands of the Dead and find their follower's ancestors, and their ancestors' ancestors, back to the first generation that helped locked me here. I will murder them over and over for eternity, in a hell of my own design.

THEY WILL WATCH ALL THAT THEY HAVE BUILT BURN IN GLORIOUS FIRE.

I WILL DESTROY THE WORLD, UTTERLY AND FOR ALL TIME."

The zombie is now floating five feet in the air, its eyes so bright that it hurts to look at them. But, it pauses and returns to the ground.

"But my world is not your world. I have little power outside of my own world. I will return to my world through the Lands of the Dead once I am free, never to return. What power I have here I will use to express my gratitude to you, but I suspect that, like me, it is your freedom from this island that you will cherish above all material rewards."
OOC:
You sense that the being is speaking the truth.
May 16, 2017 10:26 pm
Elspa slips her axe into her belt loop now that her rage has subsided. She reaches down and picks up the scroll, feeling the eldritch-infused skin with her thumb. "This is my pack," she says, sweeping her hand to include Rygnar and Jarveena. "Whatever freedom or reward I earn for myself extends to them as well."
May 16, 2017 11:00 pm
For now at least, I think its the best idea....
...and Moss follows She Who Has Been Beyond the Reef.
May 16, 2017 11:30 pm
Rygnar stands, as Elspa talks of her pack and sweeps her hand past him, to look more imposing.
May 17, 2017 7:40 am
Ygne runs a bloody hand through her hair and replies, "I need one of your bows."
