FaD Beginner Game: Mountaintop Rescue

May 3, 2017 4:53 pm
It is a dark time in the galaxy. The JEDI ORDER has been destroyed and knowledge of the FORCE is all but lost. Only a handful of people sensitive to the Force remain, scattered across the stars, ignorant of their destiny. Humble scholar Hethan Romund has preserved a fragment of the heritage of the Jedi. Traveling the galaxy, Romund stumbled across a number of people still strong in the Force and offered them what wisdom she could. Now, Romund has been captured by MALEFAX, a servant of the dark side of the Force. Compelled by Malefax to lead him to a lost temple rich in ancient knowledge, Romund has sent a signal to several of the Force-sensitive allies she has made over the course other career.
Drawn together to rescue their mentor, these Force- sensitives now climb the snow-clad slopes of MOUNT TELLEC on the Outer Rim planet Spintir..

You stand at the bottom of a steep stone rise clad in snow and ice. It’s not especially tall, but you will need to brave the elements and exert yourself to reach the top. The path continues upward in a tight switchback exposed to the howling winds. To your left, several tall evergreen trees brush against the cliff face, where smaller trees cling to cracks in the rock. A more direct route would be to scramble straight up the rocks and ice to the valley above. In any event, you have to go up if you’re going to rescue Romund. What do you do?
May 3, 2017 4:55 pm
OOC:
You can attempt any skill here that makes sense. If you do not have ranks you roll green die equal to the linked Characteristic. This check has a difficulty of one difficulty (purple) die.
May 4, 2017 9:35 pm
The contemplative Tarast Voon looks at the steep slope and judges he would be hard pressed to trek straight up the slope because he's definitely not an athlete. He looks around to see if, maybe, local animals have a trail they used to go up or come down, knowing that the local animals would have, over time, discovered the easiest/best route...
OOC:
So that might be Survival (Cun) to find an easier trail?

If that's right, that's what I try.

OOC:
That works, you find a gentle slope you can walk up around the rocks.
May 6, 2017 12:32 am
Dao surveys the slope and his options; the wind-blown path, the game trail Tarast seems to have found, the bare rocks, the tall evergreens... He meditates quietly for just a moment, allowing the environment to speak to him. Then when he opens his eyes he finds he is looking up into thick boughs of the evergreens, and a small satisfied smile comes over his face. His path set, he moves to leap up into the trees.
OOC:
I'm going for an athletics check, which Dao is untrained in so it will default to brawn.

With the ease of one who has lived all his young life finding moments to sneak away from his studies to climb trees not unlike these, Dao Jodh effortlessly scales the nearest evergreen, finding the thickest boughs to support his weight. Once he finds himself a few meters off the ground, he swiftly pushes off the tree and seems to almost glide to the next one a short ways up the slope.

Onwards and upwards he goes, keeping pace with the Kel Dor below him. He gives a shout to his new friends, "Come, Romund is not far now. Stay vigilant, who knows what we will find!" His voice carries caution, but also obvious excitement from being on a new adventure!
OOC:

Pon Edestus looks up the cliff. Flexing his muscles and giving his cybernetic arm a few extra pumps. He grins looking back up the foreboding cliff side. "Just what I needed after being cramped in that ship a warm up!" He looks to his companions, "Last one up buys the drinks!" He begins his ascent up the cliff climbing up the rocks.
OOC:
Not sure how the die roll works. Could the GM roll for me, still figuring it out, but don't want to reply too late.

"I'm not a very competitive person," Tarast Voon calls out in answer to the Nautolan as he makes his way up the trail. "I'd rather we all succeed in exemplary fashion so that we'll be in the best form to aid my friend, Hethan Romund."

"I understand that thoughts of contention aid some sentients, so I won't discourage your motivations. I'm just thinking about how that notion doesn't help me now..."

"I also have been known to talk too much."

After a bit, the Kel Dor philosopher says, "But talking is what I do best, so I guess there's that."
May 6, 2017 10:54 am
Dao speaks between leaps as he continues tree-jumping.

"Physical competition- *hurgh!* and metaphysical philosophizing- *umph!* Are each essential in their own way. *Hah!* Learning to bring each of those parts of our psyche into balance- *hup!* is one step on the path to true enlightenment. *Yeagh!*"

Somehow even through his physical exertions, Dao still seems to lace his words with a hint of well-intentioned superiority.

Here is how you would roll Maitland, Pon has a brawn of 4 so you would start with 4 green (ability) die since Athletics is a Brawn Skill. You have training in Athletics 2 ranks in fact so two of those green die would be updated to yellow (proficiency) die. The difficulty is 1 purple (difficulty) die. To roll you click advanced and choose Star Wars FFG dice and add, the reason would be the skill you are using then you add the die and post.

OOC:
He won due to the triumph he rolled, Dao takes one strain from his exertion.
May 6, 2017 2:43 pm
Dao reaches the summit behind Pon, winded but none the worse for wear. He calms himself and takes a few meditative breaths to find his center again.

"If I had known it was a race I might not have chosen the path I did. Nonetheless, I admit your climbing prowess has bested me, this time. Well done, Pon!"
May 6, 2017 3:23 pm
"That was an amazing display of physical prowess," Tarast admitted as he was last to arrive after his more leisurely trek up the animal path. "Most impressive."

"Clearly, in this competition, you are the victor, Pon."

"But as Dao pointed out, we have not found Hethan Romund yet, and we must be careful."

The Kel Dor looks around for any signs leading them onward...
May 6, 2017 4:43 pm
"Nothing like a good climb to limber up." said Pon. Turning to his companions with a grin, "You gave me a run for my money there Dao. That was fun guys!" Looking onward to the path ahead, "Sooo, guess we should get moving before it gets too cold out here. I figure an old abandoned temple should at least take us out of this stinging wind."
OOC:
Thanks for the roll GM. Pardon guys, still learning the rules as I go. I will try to be timely in my replies to the forum.
May 6, 2017 11:48 pm
Having reached the top of the steep climb, you pause a moment to take in the view. You are now quite high up the slopes of the mountain, and spread out before you is a tapestry of icy peaks, snow-clad forests, and rolling hills. Above you still is the forbidding summit of Mount Tellec, reachable only by passing through a densely wooded valley. You figure it is at least another hour of hard going before you reach the temple where Malefax, hopefully, is holding your mentor, Romund. But before you can resume your hike, a flickering, ghostly figure appears before you! He appears to be an older Cerean make wearing simple robes, but comprised entirely of silvery-blue light.
Quote:
Hello,
says the figure.
Quote:
I am the Gatekeeper.
Quote:
Welcome to my valley. You handled the climb well; you may be useful. But first I must know: what is your purpose here?

Dao takes an unconscious step forward in wonderment of the figure.

"Thank you for your hospitality, Gatekeeper. A friend called us here, we believe she may be in trouble and we are simply trying to find her. You mentioned we may be useful, is there some assistance we can offer?"
May 7, 2017 5:08 am
Pon remains quiet, letting Dao handle the talking, looking on with curiosity at the ghostly figure. "Is that a live person or a recording? Did some of the old jedi order survive?" He thinks to himself. He refrains from asking, as if the mere sound of his voice might cause the light to vanish. His inquisitive expression betraying the many questions rolling through his mind. He cast a quick glance at Tarast Voon, wondering if he might know.
May 7, 2017 4:56 pm
Tarast tries to focus on other things than the bright, distracting light show in front of them. His curiosity about the surroundings coupled with the notion that distractions like a shiny "gatekeeper" might have them in the middle of a trap about to be sprung kept the Kel Dor on alert.

Dao Jodh had asked an appropriate question. Let the trap-bait illusion answer. Then there might be more to do. For now, Tarast would be on his guard.
May 7, 2017 5:51 pm
"My temple is currently occupied by a servant of the dark side of the Force. I wish this villain removed, before is corruption of this sacred valley becomes permanent. The question is whether you are the people for the job."
May 7, 2017 7:06 pm
"That is sad news indeed," Tarast says. "If it's true, that means that our friend is in grave trouble."

"As to whether my companions and I are the people to help you,"
he adds looking about, "it seems we're the only ones here to help. If it's not us, then how long will you wait for others... in the hope that they are better?"

"But tell me, Keeper of the Gate, if we are working toward similar purpose, what dangers will we find on the way toward finding Hethan Romund and dealing with this Darkness you fear?"

"Please excuse my friend's careless words. What I said was true, we *are* here to search for our friend. However, our friend is more than just a friend. She was a mentor to each of us, opening our eyes to the ways of the Force. What kind of pupils would we be if we did not strive to uphold the ideals Romund has only begun to show us? Please Gatekeeper, allow us to assist you in cleansing this valley. And perhaps, if you find us worthy, share your great wisdom with us?"

Very well, I will help you. A group of hunters is now approaching your position, their minds have been clouded by the dark side. Even if you evade them now, they will hunt you until they find you. I will lead them to a ruin so you can set up an ambush. I would take it as a kindness if would not kill them as they are not themselves. Then the Gatekeeper is gone. You press through the snowy trees and across a bridge until you come upon the ruins he mentioned, hiding yourselves seconds before the first of the fur-clad hunters enters the ruin. He holds a old-style slugthrower rifle, and his face is daubed in blood. Soon, the entire group of hunters is in the center of the ruin, and it is time to strike...
May 7, 2017 10:54 pm
OOC:
There are 4 hunters present they are looking for something in the center of the ruin because of the Gatekeeper has tricked the, You are each at medium range from the group and have cover. Since this is an ambush you can each act first.

OOC:
I have been busy, so I have not done my homework, I am not sure what I am doing, and I hope I didn't do something stupid.
May 8, 2017 1:23 pm
Watching his two new friends take to combat so easily has suddenly made Dao feel very uncomfortable. He has spent his whole life being taught the values of peace and wisdom and he finds himself quite unprepared for an ambush on unsuspecting people, even if they truly are overtaken by the Dark Side.

Not wanting to be a hindrance, but unable to actually strike another person from behind, Dao steels himself the best he can and walks up behind one of the hunters looking as imposing as possible with his walking stick held across his body in both hands.

"Hey, you there! You and your hunting party are not welcome in this valley. Leave now and... and there will be no trouble!"
OOC:
I'm going for a Coercion check to try and make this hunter leave peaceably. Heh, talk about a stupid move :)

OOC:
Tarast: yes the difficulty would be 2 and you can aim adding a boost die to your check. (You can suffer two strain to focus and take a second aim maneuver adding an additional boost die)
Pon: Since you were at medium range it will take two moves to enter the melee. You can do this but take two strain (for taking a second move maneuver) then attack 4 green die vs 2 purple.
Dao: You can attempt a Coercion check, fortunately for you the hunters are weak willed and easily manipulated. The difficulty is one purple die and a setback but you get two boost die. One from being Zabrak and the other for the surprise attack by charging Nautolan.
May 8, 2017 2:19 pm
The hunter Dao startled turns to strike at him, however the combination of Dao's stern request and (probably more so) the sounds of his comrades in battle behind him causes the hunter to turn and run out of the ruins.

Speaking to himself, "Huh... Well that was easier than I thought! Why do people fight when teaching them the ways of peace seem so easy I wonder?" Satisfied with the outcome and brimming with confidence, Dao looks around for another hunter to show the error of their ways.

I got three advantage, fists do four damage. How would that play out? How much hp these guys have?
May 8, 2017 4:12 pm
OOC:
You did not have any successes so unfortunately you did not do damage. You have three advantage and you could do one of the following with:
1) Recover the 2 strain you took charging and aid next attacker on their roll (providing a boost die)
2) Recover 1 strain and either flee or add a setback to their attack roll
3) Take your target's slugthrower rifle (leaving him unarmed)
May 8, 2017 6:45 pm
OOC:
I am going to go with option 1
Pon's wild swing missed it's target, but the shock and surprise gave him a moment to recover his fighting stance. The eyes of the hunters are now on him, rather than Dao and Tarast. A wicked smile plays across his face, "So, who's first?"
May 8, 2017 6:57 pm
OOC:
Sorry for the late response. Tarast your blaster deals 6 + # of successes for damage so you deal 7 strain.
Pon you recover your strain and create a wide opening for the next attack
The blue ring of Tarast's stun bolt hit his target dead center noticeably shocking him but he manages to maintain consciousness, if only by a thread.

Tarast aims very carefully, noting that because Pon made such a racket with his attack that the hunter who just shot at him didn't take cover quite so well. His shot is off the mark, impacting in the dirt very near his target,

I'm taking another 2 Strain to Aim twice (8/12), and using Pon's Boost die

Dao strolls out from behind where he scared off the two hunters to find Pon mid-struggle with another. Upon seeing Tarast miss and Pon grappling with this last foe, Dao's grip on his walking staff tightens. He looks down at his white knuckles, then back up to Pon and thinks to himself, "My friend is in danger, now HERE is someone I can *thwack*!" He gets an evil (for him) smirk and takes off running towards them.
OOC:
Correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe Dao was still at the initial range so I'll suffer 2 strain to take a second move action. Also I think the hunter's setback die was temporary, so that is gone now correct? And I'll take 1 of Tarast's advantages to get a boost die if that's okay.

May 10, 2017 3:52 pm
OOC:
Normally you could but this time...
Whooping and shrieking, the remaining hunter runs through the trees, pausing only occasionally to fire wild shots in your general direction. You take only a few steps in pursuit before—suddenly—you plummet into a deep pit, a stone-walled chamber with no visible exit. Each of you falls into a separate pit in a spray of snow and gravel. The hunter reappears at the edge of the pits for a moment, hoots in derision, and then vanishes.
May 10, 2017 3:54 pm
You see no obvious way out of the pit, only some ropes well out of your reach. "Don’t bother trying to climb out, " says the Gatekeeper, suddenly reappearing. "The walls are covered in ice and it’s just above freezing; they're slick with icemelt. No, I’m afraid you will have to use the Force to have any hope of success here. Which will be quite an interesting test, from my perspective. ’’

Pon gets to his feet and brushes the dirt and snow from his clothes. He swears then angrily kicks the wall of his prison which did little more than cause some snow from above to fall on his head. The cold snow hits like a wake up slap to the face. "Got to keep cool, no time to lose my temper," he says to himself.

He crouches low, tensing his body for one great leap out of the pit. He clears his mind to call on the force, then he feels it, that energy that binds and surrounds all life. Drawing from that well spring, he energizes his muscles with that power. Confidence wells up in him, and he grins.

"Here goes nothing!" He says before taking the leap.

You can choose to use the dark side pip taking 1 point of strain and conflict to successfully activate the power or you can wait and try again.
Dark side pips and Conflict do not necessarily mean using the dark side, it could represent distraction, frustration, fear at failure etc. All of that to say don't be afraid to use them once in a while just don't rely on them too much. At the end of a regular session we roll a d10 and compare it to the conflict you gained during session. So lets say you activate it now you would have one conflict, If I roll a 1 your morality (dark side/light side scale) makes no change. Say I roll a 5, that is 4 more than your conflict so your score would go up by that number (4) towards the light side. Lets say you have a conflict of 7 and we roll a 2 on the d10 after the session, you score would go down (toward dark side) 5 points. Everyone in this adventure started dead center at 50, 70+ is light side territory, 30- is dark side territory. You get bonuses and penalties for either.

"I am all right! Unharmed except my dignity, which has little value! How is everyone?"

He looks around for anything that he might use to climb out.

Listening to the Gatekeeper gives Tarast an idea.

The Kel Dor looks at what he can see out of the pit, if there's a tree branch or some vines he can manipulate with the Force lowering into the pit enough to grab onto.

Hoping no one is watching, Tarast centers himself, trying to remain calm. Doing what his mentor, Hethan Romund, showed him, Tarast felt himself, felt the pit, felt the ice and gravel and dirt around him... and he felt for the rope... and the cold and misery and the aura from the temple called for him to embrace the uselessness of his calling... it called for him to give in to the despair of being trapped, the fear of being stuck until he starved to death... alone and friendless...

But he remembered that he had friends, acquaintances really, both of whom knew his mentor and were with him on this journey. Sometimes the Force temps us so that we will learn to trust others...

Tarast lets go of his dark meditations, trusting that his friends will save him.

Wow, well Dao only has Force Move and Force Sense. Not sure how sensing life forms would help us get out of a pit, so I'll try Force Move as well.

I'll spend the strain and dark side point.
Dao's brow furrows as he gets a sense of Tarast's troubled mind and reaches out to try and assist him. He feels along the tenuous link the Kel Dor has attached to the rope and tries to strengthen it. As the same despair from the temple beyond finds Dao through his link with Tarast the hopelessness of the situation seeps into him. It seems to whisper in his mind; "You will fail your friends... your violent act is the first step to the Dark Side..."

Dao begins to sweat and clinches his eyes shut. His fear and uncertainty in his actions cause him to struggle madly against the rising tide of dark energy rushing at him. He lets out a grunt as he pushes through the feeling to grab the rope with his mind and yank the end of it into the pit.

Dao, now panting, wipes the sweat from his brow and flops onto the ground for a moment. "Go on, Tarast. I need to meditate for a moment to recover from... whatever that was working against all of us. We had best be prepared for whatever awaits us at the end of this road we walk."

"Hey! You guys need help?" Pon calls out. He shakes the anger and hopelessness that clung to his person like a damp cloth in the aftermath of his jump. He takes his thoughts off of it by focusing on helping his friends. He takes the rope that Tarast used to escape and tosses one end into Dao's pit.

"What's going on in that temple has really crossed some wires in my head. I am starting to see why those hunters went mad. What about you guys?" Pon asked.
May 10, 2017 8:21 pm
You have all escaped now and can continue your journey.
OOC:
This ends the first part of the adventure. Recover all health and strain, and you get 10 XP. I'll give more details later
May 10, 2017 9:17 pm
As he is helped out of the pit he was in, Tarast notices with sadness that his companions are both in a funk, and he reminds himself that he will need to be very careful if he is not to follow them...

"I've got a bad feeling about this..."
May 11, 2017 11:43 am
After Dao Jodh collects himself and climbs out of the pit with the rope, he walks up to join his companions looking down the path to what awaits them beyond.

"We seem to be facing a dark energy ahead of us, and the trial will be a difficult one. But let us not forget, Romund had enough faith in us to call us here to help her. We should take strength in that knowledge. She wants us to come rescue her... She *believes* in us. The least we can do is believe in ourselves!"

And with that, Dao twirls his walking staff around a few times and plants it in the ground. He has a renewed sense of adventure and a brightened outlook, almost as if his pep talk was as much for himself as it was for Pon or Tarast.

OOC:
Each of you roll a Force Die, this will generate our Destiny Pool. The light side pips can be spent by you (the players) to upgrade the die of a check you make or upgrade the difficulty of a check made by NPCs, it can also be used to do things like say you need a glowrod you could spend one and say you planned ahead and packed one even though it's not in your inventory. I can spend the dark side points to do the same against you. When you use a light side pip it becomes a dark side pip and vice versa.

OOC:
So the Destiny Pool is 4 light side and 2 dark side.
The temple rests on the summit of a steep cliff above you. A glimmering waterfall crashes from the temple grounds and into a deep chasm separating you from the trail up to the temple. Spanning the chasm is a tall arched bridge of wooden beams, a sturdy-looking but primitive structure met at each end by a rude trail. At the near side of the bridge, a pair of one-horned Advozse mercenaries stands guard, and another set is on the far side. You’ll have to find some way across the bridge to reach the temple.
May 18, 2017 1:56 pm
Pon chimes in, "Guys I'm a little winded I'd like to conserve my energy for the temple, think there is any way to trick these guys into letting us across?"
May 18, 2017 4:10 pm
Looking at Pon Edestus and then at the situation, Tarast believes he's seen worse. "Believe it or not," he whispers, "I am an excellent conniver."

"I can talk my way around most people."
OOC:
waiting to see if Dao has a better idea, if not Tarast will go up, say something brilliant (that I will have to think up) that will either get them past these guys or get them captured by these guys...

Confidence welling, Tarast motions for the others to follow as he strides toward the creatures at the bridge.

"Perfect!" he says to his companions, "we are on the right track! The temple is just up that hill... that steep hill, but we know we're close because these offworlders have marked our route!"

To the Advozse, he says, "I am Tarast Voon, famous archeologist/historian, and a dreadful man named Malefix or Malefax or some thing has hired me to interpret something in some temple. I assume that," he pointed up the steep slope, "is the temple."

"Are you here to lead us, or should we just continue on?"

Proceed, the faster you help him the faster we get paid. I'll com ahead to the guards on the other side of the bridge and let them know you are coming. The path from there is easy but beware of wolves.
May 21, 2017 4:16 am
"Wolves you say... Excellent," Tarast says, "I will be sure to let your employer know how helpful you have been."

Glad to be done with the drama, Tarast moves with his companions across the bridge.
May 21, 2017 3:05 pm
"Good work there, I was a bit winded from crawling out of that hole. Glad it didn't have to turn into a drawn out fight," Pon chimed in.
May 21, 2017 3:20 pm
"I always prefer not to fight if I can help it," Tarast Voon says. "If I have to sew a little confusion by being less than honest, so much the better."
May 21, 2017 5:16 pm
As you continue along the path you will have to pass though a small grove before reaching the temple.

Dozing in the sunlight is a small pack of four native predators, large four-legged mammals with powerful jaws and fangs. One stirs in its slumber, jostling a second, and suddenly there's snarling, spitting, roaring, and a crunch of bone and blood. Now there are only three—clearly these animals are driven mad by the dark side of the Force. Getting past them is your next challenge.

I guess I will run Dao until we hear something.
May 24, 2017 3:56 pm
OOC:
Do they notice us yet? I was thinking of sneaking up on them and jumping out at them and use a coercion check to frighten them away.
May 24, 2017 4:09 pm
OOC:
They have noticed you but you could try coercion. It would be hard though as they are not in their right mind. I picture them acting as if they have rabies.
May 24, 2017 6:43 pm
Tarast quietly draws his blaster and checks to make sure it's set to STUN as he waits to see where Pon will lead them. He does not want to kill these creatures, but the Dark Side is growing strong in this area...
May 24, 2017 7:59 pm
Pon reconsiders scaring the wolves, the dark side is strong here, and it would be hard to overcome the darkness already influencing their minds. He smirks, "Guess it's another brawl, so much for being fresh by the time we challenge Malefax." Pon's fists clench and his muscles tense. The tension builds for a moment before being released, as he bursts forth dashing at the nearest wolf swinging for the jaw to try and knock him out.

A little surprised by Pon's choice and speed of action, Tarast has to consciously think to bring his blaster to bear on one of the wolves.
OOC:
Aim Maneuver and Fire... have no idea what the range is, I will assume Medium. If the range is Short, we'll just take off the last Purple die, whatever it rolls... So that's either 1 Threat or 1 Advantage depending on the Range, and it's 8 STUN to one wolf.

Seeing Pon getting attacked by a pack, Tarast moves up and fires his blaster again. The wolves unpredictability makes his shot difficult.
OOC:
Move Maneuver to close the Range to Short, take 2 Strain (8/12) to perform an Aim Maneuver, Fire at the wolves. Wolves take 9 damage, but Tarast has put himself in a bad position to make that shot. (Leave it to Alastor04 to figure out what to do with the Threat)
