Character Creation and Discussion Thread

Just for ease, here's the games basic character creation info. I'll update this post as necessary with allowed material, suggestions, and world building information.

Players are 6th level characters with one of the Half-Dragon templates drawn from here.

You may either roll your ability scores twice or use the standard set of ability scores. Hit points are average.

They start with a single uncommon and common magic item along with 5000 gold for expenses and mundane gear.

I allow all of Unearthed Arcana.

Hi, Crixus!

I don't know why you invited me to your game but I'm glad because it sounds awesome! I haven't been able to access your Half-Dragon Templates document yet (need permission to access) but right off the bat I'm imagining a Gold Scion Mystic

And I've been around the site for a little while so if you ever need any help with any of it I'd be more than happy to help! :-)

Wow...those templates are really cool. No idea which way I want to go at the moment; too many neat choices! Happy to fill in a gap on the team.
May 29, 2017 8:39 pm
This does look awesome. I look forward to diving into this.

I wanted to give different options so people aren't locked into the standard half-dragon choices of sorcerer, barbarian, or paladin.

I just read the document and wow! Definitely going Gem for my mystic!
Quote:
They learn two Disciplines and have a mental ability score that they use with all psionic effects depending on their type
So that's 2 Disciplines in addition to what my mystic levels give me, right?

And does that mean that even when I use disciplines granted by class and not by race I still use the mental ability based on my racial type?

So you chose a half-dragon type as well as a class, right?

Yes.

If playing a Mystic you could use one or the other.

Yes, you do choose both.
May 29, 2017 10:04 pm
So the half-dragon stuff is called templates, does that mean we pick a race and then add the half-dragon features to it?

Stat rolls.

After dropping lowest:
11, 15, 13, 15, 12, 10
12, 11, 11, 16, 15, 12

There's no rerolling 1's, right?

If we go "chosen"/shadow and rogue the cunning action is redundant correct? There's no additional bonus if you already have that benefit correct?

Submitted my Emerald Half-Dragon Awakened Mystic. But then I went through the templates again and saw the Purple template. Better stat boosts in exchange for the bonus Disciplines. Still deciding.

Emerald: They have the Psi limit as a Mystic of equal level, but Psi points equal to twice their character level. They may be focused in both Disciplines at once.

Purple: You have the same Talents Known and Psi Limit as a Mystic of equal level, but the Disciplines known and Psi points as a Mystic of ½level, rounded down. You may choose any Disciplines.
1. How do these psi point numbers work? As a Mystic do I basically ignore those numbers and instead follow the Mystic progression table? Or are these racial psi points in addition to the normal progression?

2. For the Emerald focusing on two Disciplines at once I interpret that as the two bonus Disciplines (Precognition & Iron Durability) but what happens if I want to focus on one of my other Disciplines? Do I lose focus on one of the bonus ones, or both? Can I, for example, maintain focus on Precognition while I shift focus from Iron Durability to Intellect Fortress?

I've not started creating a character yet. I wasn't around today, so I'm unlikely to have time to build a character until Wednesday. I might be able to make a start but tomorrow is likely to be crazy, first day at work after a holiday.

So we build these characters as normal, but add the templates? Point buy is ok? I don't like trusting my abilities to dice but if that's the rules...

I'm going to build an Adamantine Wizard. Might take me a few days.

I am strongly leaning towards a "Chosen"-Mithral Level 5 Rogues/ Level 1 Fighter. I was hoping to know a bit more about the world before selecting a background or writing a backstory.

Marthas is a mystical region dominated by floating land masses called islands. Each one is ruled by a single dragon, of which there is only one of each type. If the dragon ever dies a new egg is formed in their Hoard, which has several mystical properties in addition to also being a giant pile of money. Scions are their elite nobility/warriors/bureaucrats/leaders, depending on the island in question.

Every island reflects their draconic ruler in culture, terrain, and denizens. I specifically left it vague so that players could fill in the gaps if they wanted to, but here are just a few non-canon examples.
"Vichazier the Black rules her swampy island by corruption and manipulation. Several families, each one led by a Scion, kill one another for her favor. In the deepest parts of the swamp lizardfolk worship her as a goddess and regularly test the families to prove their faith."
"Bovrennor of the Battle waits patiently in his Hoard, long since converted into an arena. His island is almost entirely supported by the dozens of mercenary companies that operate out of them. Once every year a tournament is held and welcomes Scions from all across Marthas to win the honor of fighting Bovrennor, along with a massive prize from his own Hoard regardless of the outcome."

Religion is primarily about the draconic deities, though a few others have spread from immigrants. Bahamut, Tiamat, and Io are easily the most popular of deities to worship, though those with psionic powers almost all pay homage to Sardior and Tamara's clergy have outposts on most islands, offering healing for an affordable fee.

Information about the outside world is sparse at best and just plain wrong at worse. The only real facts concern the Generos Empire, which has been watched by the few spies placed there for a long time. Highly expansionist, they've managed to conquer half the world in just a century, though rebellions are common. They seem to possess a higher level of technology which is what has allowed them this far.

Yes you add the template after making your character.

The standard set of ability scores is 15, 14, 12, 10, and 8.

You can add those Psi points to your total amount. It's a pretty hefty part of the template.

You could maintain one of your bonus Disciplines and another of your regular Mystic disciplines at the same time.

Okay, sorry for me asking but I just want to be crystal clear on this part. We pick a race (dwarf, elf, halfling, etc...) then add the template?
