Chapter 1: Year 1281, Summer

Sep 13, 2017 4:24 pm
Summer has just started settling over the massive sprawl of the megacity Feyshear. All throughout the city, tensions have started to climb as the queen, Jessalynne Ebonstone, has started to significantly show her age. Despite having ruled the city since the tender age of 17, she has persisted in her role as monarch. She is reaching the end of her 100th year on the throne, with a city-wide celebration being planned from the peaks of the Skyview Mountains to the Southern Wall. Rumors and gossip run like wildfire through the crowded streets. Some positing that black magic has kept their sovereign alive this long, others arguing that she is of Elvish descent and will live another two hundred years easily.

The cause of much of this tension is that Queen Jessalynne, the 68th monarch in the Ebonstone line, has never taken a consort or married. Has not produced any offspring or heirs. Her siblings have long since died off, as well as some of their offspring. Jessalynne has made no public statement of who her heir is and there are none alive now that remember the last time a regnal period was drawing to a close without an heir identified. Not even the ancient elves that reside in the hills and forest preserves have a living memory of such a time. The peerage is teeming with intrigue with many of those in ducal positions or higher actively warring with one another over how the city will contend with the loss of the Ebonstone line. There are further rumors that certain ancient families have taken to hiring rabble to execute likely contenders to the throne from their rivals' families.

Among the Guilds, life is the same as always: craft and sell, barter and build. The one bit of intrigue happening here is that the Sparksteel Guild is starting to falter on producing strong enough wizards of their own to run all of the trains on the Adamantine Rail. For the first time in history, they are seeking magic users from elsewhere in the city to train to run one of the prestigious trains to relieve some of the burden.

All of the political intrigue is lost on most of the common-folk. While it makes for expansive conversation fodder, and indeed it has done so with nearly every eatery featuring some collection of people loudly proclaiming their thoughts on the monarchy, they face different struggles. The few massive farmsteads in the world are struggling to produce enough food to supply every hungry mouth in the city. Recent spates of bad weather, mixed with raids by the nefarious goblinoids that inhabit the caves and hills around the shore have cut supplies of grain and meat slim in some areas. While food riots haven't started yet, there are several slum communities where people are going three and four days without food as a regular matter of course.

Within the streets of Feyshear, roving gangs harry and harass well-to-do citizens. Their control can stretch over a few blocks in some cases to as much as an entire duchy in others. One of the most well-known of these groups is The Black Hand. A ruthless gang of children and early adolescents, they are well known for cons and general thievery. Several of these gangs harbor deep hatred for not only the Green Legion, but for the other gangs as well. It is not an uncommon sight to watch dozens of men and women clashing in street fights, only to end with no territory gained or lost on either side, but a pile of dead bodies left in the streets.

Finally, a significant increase of activity has happened in Greenfall Woods. More Fey have come through the gate now than any other time in recorded history. Some think it's because of the ending of Queen Jessalynne's reign. Others say something is happening in the Feywild that is causing them to have to depart. No one can get a straight answer out of the capricious creatures.

On this day, you all find yourselves in The Grand Bazaar, near the very middle of the city. Your reasons for being there are your own. You could be shopping, possibly performing, maybe seeking to convert some of the huddled masses. However, as the day has wound on, and the sun has crept higher and higher into the sky, you have all settled into one of the large central squares at your own separate tables, to enjoy a quick lunch in the pleasant weather. This particular square is about six hundred feet to a side and features all manner of food carts along the perimeter, with scattered tables and chairs and benches throughout the middle where people are enjoying their food.

The thread is now available for you guys to start in! Go ahead and get your bearings in the square, you have about 20 minutes of time to play with and you are all just starting to sit down with your food.
Sep 20, 2017 4:36 pm
Uriel yawned and stretched a bit. Looking up at the sky and smiling at the sun on his face. When he looked back down to his food he gave a brief prayer of thanks before starting in on his meal. He took his time eating ponderously slow and making sure to give the crumbs to some nearby birds so they had something to eat.

You see 4 torches changing color and spinning high in the air and hear a loud booming voice overpowering the chatter in the Grand Bazaar.

Come one, come all and test your strength! Try and defeat Spoony, the Giant Lizard Man! A one on one confrontation with one of the strongest men in all of Feyshear! Test your luck and gain some fame, and possibly a small fortune! People if you want to watch a good fight come place some money down on your favorite fighter!

You see an olive-skinned elf with white spiked hair wearing green and black leathers. He seems short, no taller than 4' 11" and his eyes seem to be pulsating in color, first red, then blue, then yellow, then green. He has a rapier on his side and a pan flute tied onto his belt. He has a mask with two faces tied to the back of his head. One side is white with a frown while the other is black brandishing a smile.

He continues,

Come on folks! Does no one think that they are strong enough to defeat my large friend here?

A few people begin to gather trying to see what all of the racket is about.

Ahh, it seems we are beginning to stir up an audience! Who is ready to place some bets?

The 4 torches begin to come down, become a steady blue color, and create a 10 x 10 ft square. The elf steps away slightly and pats Spoony on the back, he begins to play on his pan flute as the crowd begins to form and talk among themselves on who thinks they can take on Spoony.

A young Aven hides away from the sun, peering from the shade. Both of his feet are on his seat as he munches on skewered meat.

"Remind me why we can't just pick those up again. They are not using it." he remarks to one of his companions, clearly eyeing the unattended properties and the leftover food and drink.

"Do they not see that there is enough to go around?"

A large costumed character comes out on stage with his hands held high. A mask, that to imitate a lizard folk sits over a majority of his face. He, a fully grown goliath male, struts around with extreme expressions.

He switches to a drum he has on his back adding a vicious beat to the tune provided. He beats for a minutes before throwing the drum off stage (safest direction possible).

He lets out a deep roar!!Who among you.... think you have what it takes to face me in the ring???!!!! Who among you..... has the audacity to stand against me???!!!

He tosses a bag of 5 gold coins to his performance partner. Gives a subtle nod to show he is ready. He lets out one final roar before marching around the magical ring glaring at his audience, beckoning.

Marie-Louise sat on her knees, small even for her age, and flung back her braids before delicately picking up her cutlery and starting on her meal. After a few bites she hears the voice booming over the square and jumps up on the bench to try and see where the voice is coming from. She stares at the tumbling torches for a few seconds, listening to the voice challenge everyone in the square, before quickly taking a small headless doll from one of her two large front pockets. She looks at it for a moment before softly speaking to it I know Antoinette, that would be fun, but I don't think it's allowed. Remember last time? Yes I know! Ok, I'll tell him.
She looks at Uriel, sitting next to her, but instead of speaking to him she sends her voice directly into his head.

As the torches come down and the music begins Marie jumps off the bench and runs up the stage, pushing herself through the gathered crowd until she's all the way to the front. She giggles and speaks to her doll again. Yes, he would look better covered in parasites! She stands there, waiting to see if anyone takes the challenge.

Uriel nods in that slow way that Marie is used too.
He tries to think back to her.

The young man sitting with Ci just chuckles and shakes his head.

If I've told you once, I've told you a thousand times Ci, it's just disgusting! Tanford says with a smile as he takes a bite of his own skewered meat. He is one of the ones to sit forward with rapt attention as the dining square is filled with the booming voice and flashing show that Shannout and Vadath are putting on.

As Marie-Louise approaches the wrestling arena formed by the lights, a stout dwarf with a nose that has clearly been broken a time or twelve saunters up. OY, Scalelover, I'll take yer bet. What're your rules? he says before brushing the grease from his now discarded meal off his mouth with the back of his hand.
OOC:
A side note on Marie-Louise's ability for clarity, she can speak to others, but can't hear them back in her head. :) Though,
I like the image of Uriel trying his hardest, face scrunched up, to get his thoughts to her.
OOC:
JKL, wasn't sure if you were sitting with someone else or were plopped down with Marie-Louise and Uriel. For the time being, you now have an acquaintance, Tanford Hamsley. He's a young Bazaar clerk, responsible for collecting taxes and fees for a segment of the Grand Bazaar.
Sep 21, 2017 11:18 pm
The elf steps forward and says with a grin

Its simple, you must defeat my friend here in a bout of hand to hand combat, no weapons of course. First one to fall or give up is the loser. If you win you get bragging rights and the earnings that have been given to us graciously by the crowd. If he wins we get the earnings. Sound fair? Remember the people are here for a show.

He gives a wink at the dwarf.

Do you accept?
Sep 22, 2017 12:53 am
"Okayyy..." he says with a shrug.
"Then riddle me this. If this coinage you speak so highly of is so reliable and true, why is a bristly child willing to go to such lengths for a little bit more of it?" His eyes lock onto 'the bigger slob'. He points Tanford towards the commotion with the movement of his eyebrows, clearly projecting.
Sep 22, 2017 4:03 pm
It looks like this little dwarf is scared. Is he just another coward that speaks ill but stands for nothing?! He circles the ring and speaks his words to the entire audience.
Sep 22, 2017 4:16 pm
Uriel had almost reached his second bite.

Seems like a nice day little ones. He said to some birds that nearby were eating the crumbs he gave them.
He finally finished his second bite. His eyes looked to the loud men. He shook his head and went back to his meal.
Sep 22, 2017 5:28 pm
Tanford smiles again. It's exactly because it is so reliable and true that they seek to gain more. The more coinage you possess, the more you can do because it proves a static worth, you see. Truly, you should seek acceptance to Obokorth's for a simple class. It explains it so much better than I can! He looks to the wrestling match that seems to be forming.

Meanwhile, the dwarf looks the giant lizard-faced man in the eyes and snorts, climbing into the ring. Those terms is alright by me. Let's see how ya do against a proper Sparksteel pickswinger. he says, lifting his arms into a grappler's ready stance. His clothes are heavy cloth, reinforced in areas with patches and leather.

Sparksteel Dwarf - AC 12
Wrestling will take place like combat. Spoony wins the initiative and can go first. So you can flavor Wrestling Moves and such as part of your post, I'll post the AC of your opponent's for wrestling ahead of time. In normal combat situations, I will not directly state the AC.

Spoony watches the dwarf enter the ring. He looks him up and down and waits for his partner to deliver the starting tone. A sharp bell like sound pierces the air and Spoony rushes the Dearf Immediately. They meet in a lock.
Finally!!! Try not to lose too soon!! Spoony throws the dwarf into the ropes and delivers a devestating clothes line as the dwarf goes down. Spoony pulls him up and attempts to put him in a choke hold (grapple). THIS IS THE POWER OF LIZARDFOOOOOOLK!!!!!

The Sparksteel dwarf lets out a grunt as Spoony's shot hits him in the throat. He starts to slip down to his knees, but the lizard-faced man grabs him around the throat.

Reaching up behind him, he cups his hands and boxes Spoony's ears, dealing 7 Stamina damage! As Spoony's head moves back in pain, the dwarf tries to get his own grip around the back of the goliath's neck!
OOC:
You'll need to make an opposed check cton, if you succeed, he fails to grapple you in return. If you fail, he has you grappled as well!

Marie-Louise watches as Spoony and the dwarf start to wrestle. She hugs her doll close to her body with her left hand, slowly wiggling the fingers of her right hand, waiting for the right moment. When the dwarf tries to get his grip around Spoony's neck Marie's lips curl up and her right hand moves lightly forward like a crawling spider while she whispers Pestis, making mites, fleas and other parasites appear on Spoony's body.
OOC:
Now, because this wrestling match is not meant to actually hurt I discussed with our lovely DM to change the effects of this cantrip in the following way: You must make a DC 13 CON save (normal spell save), if you fail you are distracted (instead of taking damage), causing you to have disadvantage on the opposed grapple check. You also move 5 feet in a random direction (normal effect from the spell, direction decided by 1d8 roll), so away from the dwarf. If you succeed the save nothing happens, you ignore the little things crawling over your body.

Spoony attempts to hold tight his foe. He is caught off guard with his foes devious and direct tactic. Distracted, he is unable to keep his guard. Spoony stumbles back in a daze, hands over his head showing his pain to the audience. After a couple.of seconds, he focuses on his opponent again.
Is that all youve got?!?!

They lock in. Spoony attempts to get leverage and uses his leg to trip his opponent to the ground. As he looks down to where he wants to trip his enemy, he sees a large mass of centipedes curling up his leg. Oohh! Wait.... wha... He backs away in confusion, hands over his face and ears, alternatively.

Vlur keeps playing his pan flute in the back as the show goes on.

The crowd is getting into this one!

He notices the centipedes.

Oh! It seems Olidammara wants this show to get a few laughs in. Your unpredictable as ever.

He chuckles to himself as he touches his mask.

Lets see how this goes.

He goes back to playing his flute.

"Hmm... hmm... hmm...!" he locks eyes derisively, his head bobs each time he vocalizes.

"No, thanks. I appreciate it. I'd rather drop by the library instead. Maybe it's only me but I feel like there's something restrictive about classes." he retorts before catching the mass of centipedes.

"Urgh! Thank God I'm done. Hey, wanna get a closer look at that horror show?" he winced as he bins the skewers. He then proceeds to join the huddled masses around the ring.
