Episode 3

Nov 19, 2017 5:08 pm
The days pass and life slowly return to normal. The training of the town militia is following schedule, and while you cannot make top trained soldiers in a few days, they at least know which end to stick the goblins with should they try to attack again.

You have managed to build something resembling a barricade. Though with the tunnels underneath the town, you have begun looking into where they end up. There’s is an exit to the glassworks as well as the Hagfish. The owner, Jargie Quinn, is quite shocked at it’s existence and swears it must have been there before he took over 6 years ago. You are able to board up all the exits out of town. Mainly the beach and the forest east of town.

The books you found below the cathedral seems to be both historical texts dating back to old Thassilon as well as a journal. It was written by Ezakien Tobyn, the former priest.

He goes into the late unpleasantness. The most exciting thing in it is the fact that the town had a serial killer that they called Chopper, and it turned out to be Jervis Stoot a woodcarver. He couldn’t believe the friendly old man could do something so horrible, and he was sure the answer was somewhere in the old books.

He also adopted an aasimar by the name of Nualia. It was in fact she who discovered the secret entrance. In the last few entries.he mentions how she’s been behaving erratic lately and one day he came home to find her standing over a broken mirror, bloody cut on her hands.
Nov 20, 2017 6:18 pm
Aery reverts into an academic it seems since loss of life or limb become less direct over the next few days and regales the rest with his discoveries over dinner quietly due to the subjects of discussion he brings up. He's curious about why there were tunnels in the first place and why they lead to the beach (Junk Beach now) and the forest to the east. He's also curious if the old man may have found something that 'turned' his mind to do the things he did or if there was a deep seeded reasoning behind them. The mention of the Aasimar came to mind as someone Aery wanted to question if they were around especially since the last entry made him wonder what she had seen in the mirror or if by chance she had inherited something dark from the former town serial killer.

Lighting a pipe Aery inquires to see what the others have been up to while he had spent time with his nose in books and thinking.
Nov 22, 2017 9:05 am
I'd like to read the books from Ezakien Tobyn, specifically his findings about the woodcarver Jervis Stoot, trying to read between the lines to see what could have influenced an old woodcarver to suddenly become a serial killer. If possible, I'd like to see where the woodcarver turned serial killer lived and investigate whether I can find any magical or religious sources as to his personality shift. Also, if the aasimar Nualia is still around, I'd like to talk to her, I want to talk to her and examine both the mirror and her residence.
Nov 22, 2017 9:27 am
Not being an academic sort Butler keeps himself useful by helping with the training of the town militia and helping out with some of the more physical work such as boarding up the exits.
Nov 23, 2017 8:18 am
Alaric is pleased with the progress of the training of the militia and the barricades we have managed to build. Sure, they may not stone cold stop an army, but they'll slow down a raiding band of goblins long enough to mount a proper defense. Alaric makes a point of working with the sentries to keep them alert while on patrol, having Jenna routinely test their defenses, especially at night and in the hours before daybreak, when it is most difficult for warriors to stay awake and alert. Jenna benefits from learning to stealthily slip past enemies while the militia learns to stay alert and keep better guard. After all, getting shown up by a little girl is embarrassing. (Extra motivation and hopefully keeps Jenna out of trouble).

Alaric also takes the militia on daily runs in full armor, getting them used to arming up quickly and becoming a mobile fighting force.

You are all coming down for breakfast one day when you notice the staff is stressing more than usual despite a low turnout.

The bartender comes over to you. "I am sorry, breakfast will be late today. Ameiko hasn't come in today."
Nov 27, 2017 3:05 pm
"Right well I want breakfast fast so lets go check out her place if she isn't there lets go see her grumpy old man... if I don't get a breakfast I think we should feed someone a knuckle sandwhich... mine are kind of small though so probably not very filling... someone with bigger hands will be serving them out." Aery states his face twitching slightly... "Don't people know you don't mess with a Halflings breakfast???" he mutters before going off to find out where Ameiko lays her head at night.
Nov 27, 2017 10:30 pm
Hearing the problem, Alaric nods to Aery. Jenna and I will accompany you he says quietly. I'm confident that Butler can run the Militia training today.
Nov 28, 2017 7:47 am
Butler frowns for a moment "She could be in trouble. The militia will be fine on their own for a few hours." he says before quickly gathering his sword and shield

Is there some way that I can help your kitchen staff good sir? I can try to aid whomever is in charge of your kitchen in the interim and bless your food and drink if that's ok with you?. It may not make up for the shortcoming but hopefully it will aid in conciliating your guests.

You gather your inner strength and focuses on Ameiko. It takes only moment until you have a sense of direction to the north west. And not far, you get the feeling that she's only around 600 feet or so away. Which means she's still in town somewhere, but not anywhere near her sleeping quarters (which is in fact the inn itself, she sleeps in one of the rooms as long as it's not full. When it is, she has a small utility closet that can double as a bedroom in worst case).
OOC:
Sure, take 1 strain.
Dec 8, 2017 10:31 am
Well, I guess I'll tell the rest of the party and if they are all ready, I'm going in as straight a line as possible to her location. Oh, and I'm bringing some shovels and (hopefully) somebody who knows something about digging because my guess is, she's underground.
Dec 9, 2017 8:33 pm
Cool, I'll grab a shovel and go with you. Jenna, you up for going with us?
Dec 12, 2017 4:34 pm
Following Jimmy's directions with Jenna in tow you arrive at a big building that you recognize as the Sandpoint Glasswork. While the furnace chimney's still plumes with smoke it looks curiously silent. The front door to the shop area has a sign that says closed. All the windows have curtains drawn in front of them.
Dec 12, 2017 5:01 pm
Butler moves forward and tries the front door, looking around for anything untoward.
Dec 12, 2017 6:21 pm
"Well this looks as Shady as falling trees in a hurricane..." Aery mutters before he moves in behind the door opener (Ashdown) and to the side so he can peer inside as it opens.

The door flies of its' hinges as it flies into the room beyond with a loud sound. On the street around you've started to attract the attention of passersby.

You can barely notice a couple of skylight windows sticking up at the top of the building. You can't see through them from your vantage point, hell, you can barely notice that they're there.
OOC:
Using 2 threats from Athletics to call the attention of passing people, and the threat from Vigilance make you suffer a point of Strain.
Dec 16, 2017 6:43 am
Jimmy looks around the crowd of people, while brushing splinters from his clothing. Worry not, good people, we are on official business and are trying to save the life of an innocent woman. Eying Butler, Jimmy remarks quietly, I've travelled with brigands who made less chaos than this lot.

A small crowd has gathered, but they seem to calm at Jimmy's explanation. "Guess we'll give them the benefit of the doubt," one of them mutters to the rest.

Inside, Butler can see a display room with lots of beautiful glassworks. From figurines to wine glasses. There's no sign of anything broken or out of place... except the door.

Two more doors lead further into the building. One says storeroom, and the other has a sign that says "To Glassworking Room" From there you can hear the rumble of the glassworks' furnace.
Dec 19, 2017 8:04 pm
Aery scampers in after Butler and waits to figure out which door he goes to and listens at the other just in case there's the muffled scream.
Dec 20, 2017 10:56 am
Alaric has both of his rapiers out and once he clears the door, he faces the storeroom door, ready for an attack.
Dec 28, 2017 8:33 pm
Seems the noise of the breaking door is drowned out by the furnace and you stand waiting for an attack that don't seem to come. The door leads to a hallway that ends in a door, the sound of the furnace even louder.
Dec 28, 2017 8:47 pm
Butler holds a finger up to his lips cautioning his companions to be as quiet as possible before moveing to the door and trying the latch.
Dec 28, 2017 8:49 pm
"Right I'll take the easy option..." Aery explains and opens the storage room door if something comes out he'll be able to surprise it by being behind the door.

Dec 31, 2017 12:32 am
Once I've calmed the crowd down, I'll go in as well and move a few steps to the side once I'm inside. I have my staff ready and I'm keeping both interior doors in view.
Jan 1, 2018 2:36 pm
The doorway to the storeroom reveals a hallway that leads to several doors on both sides. There's no sign of life in this direction.

Butler however opens the door to quite scene. Several bodies lies scattered across the room. A handful of goblins are running about, smashing glassworks into the walls and furnace. You see one of the goblins slip on the blood of one of the bodies and fall into the furnace, as the other goblins stands around laughing a horrible shrieking laugh.

A half-elf walks into view. "What is going on here?" he demands. As he speaks the goblins stop for a moment. "We need to get the prisoner out of here before we are noticed."

Aery seeing Bulter wail on someone gripped his staff tighter and moved into the room and to the side feeling his body get lighter and the heat of the fires not being so bad as he thought they'd be. He turned his head towards Father Lee and nodded.

Aery's voice boomed out over the machinations of the furnace, breaking glass, and combatants,

"Its just one of those days...
Where you don't want to wake up"
he belts out wiping the length of his face with his hand.

"Everything is stuck,
Everybody sucks,
You don't really know why,
But you want to justify,

he continues his voice getting more guttural.

Butler runs into the room, shield raised and slashes into the half-elf, who screams out in return.

Jimmy focuses his powers, and Aery can feel power surging through his body.

Aerys’ voice booms into the room. It seems to reverberate through the glass in some fashion and for a moment it seems to come from everywhere at the same time, almost a divine voice of retribution.

The half-elf shuffles backwards at the effect, his bow falling to the ground. His eyes opens wide, as he realizes he’s made a huge mistake.

As he does, he looks on in horror as Alaric closes in with a flurry of blows. Unable to dodge, several cuts leave him in a bloody heap on the floor. A blood-filled cough the only sign that he is still alive.

You are sure the goblins will turn and run, but instead seeing their leader falls seems to fill them with rage. "Longshanks! Get ‘em," one of them croaks. While a undisciplined group, they attack with fury. Some of them are wielding tongs, dripping with molten glass instead of swords.

The first group of goblins charges at Butler, wild eyes as they attack. He is able to avoid their attacks with ease. The same with Alaric who is surrounded by another group of the vicious little creatures.
OOC:

Aery’s blast hits one of the goblins around Alaric.

Their beady eyes look in fear as Butler’s sword turns on fire. "Magicks! They have vile magicks." one complains.

Butler swings his sword in a wide arc, striking two goblins down dead and singing a third. The trained fighter that he is, he kicks the half-elf in the stomach, with a painful groan he stays down. Not going anywhere anytime soon.

A series of slashes from Alaric, slays goblins left and right, and leaves one singular goblin left in the group that attacked him.

The group attacking Butler, which has been reduced to two goblins tries to stab him, but he easily sidesteps.

The singular goblin left of the group attacking Alaric, makes a final stab before disengaging. Trying to attack any counter attacks, he trips in his own feet, falling face first down on his own sword.

With only a couple of goblins left, you make quick work of them. You are standing around the groaning half-elf.

Well, friends! We survived another battle and have a prisoner to question... Which is fortunate, because there are a LOT of questions to be answered. I recommend that Aery question the prisoner, I doubt my skills would get anything out of him,
though I could skin him alive if he doesn't feel talkative. The more useful his answers are, the more skin he gets to keep. Probably better to explore other options first though.
Jan 21, 2018 10:06 am
Butler leans down and cleans his sword on a scrap of what used to be goblin clothing before resheathing it. He then moves to the half elf before disarming him of any weapons he can find "Perhaps our friend here can tell us something before he wakes" he says to the others as he starts a more thorough inspection of the half elf’s possessions.

In his backpack, you are able to find a journal filled with drawings of Sandpoint, as well as erotic drawings of a woman.

You find the following passages as most interesting:

"The raid went about as planned. Few Thistletop goblins perished, and we were able to secure Tobyn’s casket with ease while the rubes were distracted by the rest. I can’t wait until the real raid. This town deserves a burning, that’s for sure."

"Ripnugget seems to favor the overwhelming land approach, but I don’t think it’s the best plan. We should get the quasit’s aid. Send her freaks up from below via the smuggling tunnel in my father’s Glassworks, and then invade from the river and from the
glassworks in smaller but more focused strikes. The rest except Bruthazmus agree, and I’m pretty sure the bugbear’s just being contrary to annoy me. My love’s too distracted with the lower chambers to make a decision. Says that once Malfeshnekor’s
released and under her command, we won’t need to worry about being subtle. I hope she’s right."

"My love seems bent on going through with it—nothing I can say convinces her of her beauty. She remains obsessed with removing what she calls her "celestial taint" and replacing it with her Mother’s grace. Burning her father’s remains at the Thistletop shrine seems to have started the transformation, but I can’t say her new hand is pleasing to me. Hopefully when she offers Sandpoint to Lamashtu’s fires, her new body won’t be as hideous. Maybe I’ll luck out. Succubi are demons too, aren’t they?"

Aery scans the area pointed to and swears under his breath.

"Bind him we have a lady to find and a possible entrance to secure or booby trap... and who the hell is Tobyn?" Aery states his mind already speeding through ideas...

All this before breakfast. Tch. he thinks to himself shaking his head.

Jimmy crosses himself as he reads the document. This is grave news. We should consult with Father Zanthus and I need to meditate and pray.

Also a discipline check to recover strain

I'll hang with Aery and watch Aery's back. If Jimmy is going somewhere to meditate, I'll ask him to have Jenna meet up with us. She might as well watch Aery persuade our prisoner to talk, it could be a learning experience. Besides, with all of this weird stuff going on, I'd like to keep her close by.
OOC:
Scrath that. Jenna is with us already. My bad. On a side note, I thought Jimmy made some scrolls of regenerate? 1: can someone who isn't a priest use that scroll or does the scroll cost any strain for Jimmy to cast since he paid strain already? 2: does it just work as normal, with whoever is reading the scroll taking the strain? I'm not trying to pry, just curious about the mechanics and how that might play into our party strategy.

SelectiveAmnesia sent a note to mcneils5
You can recall the name Tobyn. It was the name of Father Zanthus' predecessor, and the one whose bones was stolen.
Jan 23, 2018 11:36 pm
Good call, I forgot about the scrolls. SA was kind enough to retcon that I made them the previous week. I had planned on making 2 scrolls of regenerate for each of our party members, including Alarcs foster daughter (see I remembered). The cost and difficulty for me to cast regenerate is 2 Strain. It's a magic check with a difficulty of 2 purple dice. I'll pass out the scrolls now. Good question on the mechanics though. I haven't found a straightforward answer to the mechanics of someone else using a scroll I made.

The only recommendation I found on some forums was to have the person using the scroll pay the strain cost and make the same difficulty check and then the scroll crumbles into dust. But, that was on a forum so it's just someone's opinion.

We'll have to get SA's ruling on how to use scrolls.

The rules don't actually say a lot about scrolls at all, but whoever reading it spending the strain and doing the check seems reasonable.
Jan 25, 2018 12:47 am
OOC:
That makes sense to me.
OOC:
Any of us using a scroll is probably going to be bad at it unless its Aery, but even then I think all of the healing spells are spirit checks, so we'll need to get lucky with our rolls. I don't know about you guys but I don't have anything in spirit, so you better cross your fingers for luck if the healer goes down and I'm fumbling around with a scroll :P

Sorry. I've been busy. Also waiting for you to decide what to do. You have an unconscious half-elf lying on the ground and sounds from the basement. Should have posted something to prompt you again, but been busy at work and in my spare time last few weeks.

I was headed down stairs since KO'd elf is pretty easy to handle I figure. I mean there's closets, metal... chains...

OOC:
It's all good SA, life happens. I've was unexpectedly busy the past two weeks but things are slowing down again.
Feb 17, 2018 8:44 pm
I'll stick with Butler.
OOC:
So, tying this guy up is going to be a coordination or athletics check I guess? I suck at both so hopefully Butler can deal with tying the elf up.
Feb 18, 2018 9:14 am
Butler turns to the others "Shall we see what the commotion is downstairs?" he says as he gestures towards the stairs down to the basement.
OOC:
I've been a bit rammed since the new year as well (started a new job at the beginning of Jan) so I certainly can appreciate that real life can be a bit tricksome sometimes
Feb 18, 2018 1:51 pm
Slowly, you make your way down the stairs, taking each step carefully, wary of danger. From the middle of the stairs you can begin to make out a basement storage room, that seems to contain sacks of sand.

On the ground, you can make out two shapes on the ground. You can see a wall on the left hand side of the stairwell has been smashed, revealing a hallway that goes further into the dark. Seems to be an offshoot of the secret passages under the town. You can hear sounds coming from this hallway, and down here they are louder than they used to be. It sounds like a growling of some sort.

In the other end of the room is a door into another room.
OOC:
No need to roll to tie up the half-elf. He won't be going anywhere anytime soon.
Feb 19, 2018 3:07 pm
Rapiers out. Moving to the door and kicking it open, ready to be torn apart and then haunt Aery for the rest of his "short" life.
Feb 19, 2018 7:12 pm
Moving past the shapes, seeing them as two of the interim militia. You kick in the door that says "Manager's Office" and reveals a small office where you can see Ameiko tied up on the ground.

From the left hallway, you can hear the growling louder, it seems the sound of the door being kicked down has attracted some attention.
Feb 19, 2018 9:12 pm
Butler moves to the left hallway and readies his sword and shield. Casting a quick glance back to Alaric and the others he shouts "Get her out of here! The militia too if they’re still alive." then rapping his sword against his shield he moves down the hallway to buy his companions as much time as possible.
Feb 20, 2018 4:49 am
Sheathing the twin rapiers weapons as incidental, picking up Ameiko and carrying her over my Right shoulder. Calling for Jenna to loop a rope around each of the militia guard's chests so I can drag them. Using
[ +- ] Order to Arms
to have Jenna be able to get a rope around each guard in a single round and draw her bow. I'm going to grab the ropes around the guards with my Left hand and start up the stairs.

So, 4 Strain total taken by me just now; 3 Strain for me to perform Order to Arms and another 1 Strain to take another action. This isn't to be happening very often guys. It hurts.

Seeing someone else take care of the heavy lifting and someone else on overwatch Aery does what Aery does which is run his mouth.

"Through the fire,
To the limit, to the wall,
For a chance to be with you
I'd gladly risk it all (Your biscuits are really good)
Through the fire
Through whatever, come what may
We're likely to at least get a round of drinks out of this..."

He sings watching as he moves up with Alaric since he's likely the slowest moving of the team.
OOC:
Casting Inspiring Song and using the boost hopefully it cycles well
OOC:
Update using triumph below.
Aery finishes and realizes the song does not have that much effect and realizes he doesn't know that many songs about glass either.

"Well poo..." he states before looking at a battered looking large barrel of silica for glass blowing.

He shrugs and wedges it off the wall and bangs it a couple times to get it going be it rolls/waddles down the hall away from where they're going back of the stairs. It cracks and busts open spreading out making is a little harder to follow the party up the stiars.
OOC:

As Butler moves down the hallway, which has started to tilt downwards, the growling grows higher and higher until a fearsome vision appears before him. Moving towards him is three hairless hunchbacked humanoid figures on back-bent, dog-like legs. Through a hideous mouth that seems to split in three rows of teeth you can see a sinister tongue moving as they growl. Thin arms reach down beyond their knees, ending in three clawed fingers. Their red eyes look at you with a barely subdued hunger.

Seeing Butler move to engage Aery moves away to make sure Alaric carrying all the victims has cover. Banging his staff against the ground his bounces a bit as he sidesteps along the larger man and the heavy load.

He grunts at times to the bead he makes between his footsteps and staff bangs before he opens his mouth fling out a hand making odd hand gestures.

Sidenote: I probably should have stated passing a boost die to the next PC, I'll keep it in mind for the future.

The creature moves with surprising speed, as it dodges butler’s attack.

From behind he can hear Aery’s song, and while it soothes your souls, sadly it don’t seem to have any effect on the growling creatures.

The guards make a steady thud, thud as they are dragged up the stairs by Alaric. His efforts helped by Father Jimmy’s power.

The defensible position means only one of the creatures are able to reach Butler, and the rest stands back screaming curses in some hideous language.

The first one bites into Butler’s arm, but the armor takes most of the damage. The two other, full of bloodlust tries to fight their way forward to get a shot at Butler, causing the first creature to fall to the ground from the weight.
OOC:
Only one creature gets to attack, the others are trying to scare and discourage Butler. I rolled once, adding a Boost due to assistance.

The hit succeeds and causes 7 Wounds damage.
Their success on the Coercion check causes 2 Strain damage.

2 Threat: Butler receives a Boost on his next action.
3 Threat: They cause the nearest creature to fall prone.

Through the hole in the floor, can I see Butler and if I can, what range would he be from me? I'm keeping a good grip on the prisoner and holding him in front of me. I haven't forgotten that a Half-Orc is climbing the ladder and I will move out of his if necessary to avoid being trampled. @Alaric, what's your kid doing? She climbing up after you or in front of you or staying behind to cover your retreat? You fall with those guys on you with her behind you, she's going to be hurt bad.
Mar 11, 2018 12:14 am
OOC:
Well, I kind of messed up there. I asked Jenna to get her bow out. I should have had her go up the ladder before I started climbing. Good chance I'm not winning Father of the Year. Guess the only way I can make it worse is if I kick down the ladder after Aery and I get up there. Now THAT would be a messed up thing to do :) "Thanks for covering us! Good luck with those mobs!" *Ladder Kick*

IRL, I asked my niece what she'd do, she told me she'd start shooting at the monsters. I told her she would most likely hit Butler. She replied it was worth the risk and thought Butler could probably deal with a couple of arrows hitting him in the bum if she misses. She's a very compassionate girl.

Butler grunts slightly as it looks like one of the creatures has got its teeth into him but as he pushes it back you realise he managed to get his shield in its face as it came in.
