"Let's avoid a repeat of our grand entrance into this shit hole." Kray's words were geared toward those who had the pleasure of experiencing the trap room of gas and stirges.

Looking past a little further, he turns and walks backwards a few steps still moving forward, speaking next to Ahri.

...Akkeen gives a sharp laugh that is a bit loud. It breaks through the silence of the dark and still chamber.

The room is grand, maybe 70 or 80 feet across. Ceiling at least 20' high.

The three huge hearths are positioned symmetrically in a triangle, taking up the large part of the room in their collective formation. Each of the fireplaces has openings on three sides. It is clear that fires burning within them could project heat outward in all directions.

The edges of the room are littered with grime, webs, and filth. And also, you can see them here and there, bones.

The stone floor is marred with scorch marks at various points. Some blocks of the stone floor and the trim leveling around the furnaces are broken and crumbling.

The party entered through a south opening. Two other throughways, large archways with no doors, exit east and west. The north wall has the remnant images of an old painted mural. The art is degraded and flaked away now though, perhaps scraped away.

No lurkers are seen other than a few scurrying rats. No sounds of intruders.

But the darkness is thick outside of the torchlight and great shadows cast behind the pillar-like furnace structures.
Nov 4, 2018 3:48 pm
Bryn nods to Akkeen and pulls out the black book to consult it as he moves toward one of the fireplaces.

Looking at the scorch marks Bryn says "I think everyone should keep their distance."
Nov 4, 2018 7:18 pm
Kray spoke, voice matter of fact. "Everyone hear? Give the treasure hunter some space. Last thing we need is is another body to drag." His mind turned to Ivor, now food for carrion and vermin. "Or leave behind." An eye turned toward Maeriks, grateful he'd made it back. His blood started to simmer, memories of men lost over the years, and especially the last year since the Borgh Riac.

Talius. Qiu. Ivor. The list was close to him. Personal. Qiu he hadn't known so well, but Kray had taken an immediate liking to the ex-gladiator.

Kray's gaze spanned the room, gaugingthose present, fingers tapping on Serpent's Judgement, voice measured and cold. "I swear, anyone sets off a trap and it'll be the least of your concerns. I'll be the Fates' right hand and end you myself."

Required Action:. Thorn and Brynn send Investigation Check
Nov 4, 2018 10:06 pm
Thorn carefully checks the space before them, wondering what might have caused the scorch marks.
OOC:
If and when Thorn gets close to the flaky mural, he wants to take a closer look at it and see if any of it is recognizable. Let me know what kind of check you want for that if relevant, J.

Following Bryn and Kray's call for caution, everyone proceeds carefully. They look for any telltale signs of mechanisms, slides, levers, pivot doors - anything that might suggest another trap.

Unlike the previous trap room, this one shows little sign of metal work. It appears to be all old stone. This room surely does not show the marks of manipulation or recent construction as the rooms with moved statues, mismatched portcullises, rough-hewn cage doors.

No one is convinced that this site is trapped. Akkeen says as much, that he has never known any construction or trapping here.

Bryn sizes up the three hearths. He feels strongly from the riddles of his references that the Halonian Phoenix Box is in the northern-most hearth. He begins his search there. Thorn assists with his observant eye, and the others look on intermittently while also looking outward for the possibility of enemies approaching from the darkness of any of the three entrances to the room.

Minutes pass...and nothing. The interior of the furnace is a great work of architecture, but no sign of a secret panel or marked brick. Bryn checks the other hearths just to be sure. No results. Bryn references the scroll and the Black Book that he read to learn the cryptic message of this mystery.

Akkeen leans down close to Bryn and whispers to him...

After the private exchange, Akkeen pulls back slowly from Bryn but stares at him intently, with a bit of a wolfish smile.

Bryn begins muttering to himself and digs into his pack to find some chalk begins to etches several pictograms from his black book. After erasing two of them and cursing to himself he completes the chalk work. He then lights some candles and places them in particular spots on the drawings.

Bryn places the black book gently on the ground and sits in the middle of the circle still chanting quietly he pulls a crusty cocoon out of his pack and pries off the top. A slimy worm like creature that reminds Kray, Thorn and Maeriks of the Kretkul that was used in the Borgh Riac.

Bryn holds down the small creature, the Shoullod, and slices into it with a dagger spilling its lifeblood. Pulling some ash from the bag that Bryn took from the other fireplace at the Sars garden palace, he sprinkles the dark ash over the Shoullod and opens the small ports on his wrists letting his own blood flow freely, dousing the creature.

Bryn chanting a little louder now, takes the blood and ash mix in his hand and draws out more lettering from the black book.

Bryn goes through the arcane motions of the strange ritual, splitting the miniature tentacled creature and mixing its blood with ash. His chants and mutterings are indecipherable. Throughout, he references back and forth to the black bound grimoire that sits open on the ground beside him.

The others keep watch while the ritual continues for nearly 10 minutes. There are still no disturbances from the perimeter of the room.

After a time Bryn stands up, carrying the book opened to a certain page with illustrations. He begins again to explore the hearth.
[ +- ] Should be Note to Oxbox
Bryn calls the others to lend a hand. He gives instructions and in short time Maeriks and Thorn have the brick panel cracked and pulled away.

Behind the mortar and stone, it stands tall and narrow. The iron is cloudy and stained. The bronze trim work is discolored mostly to green now. But the image is still clear, an elaborate raised bust, beautiful art of the a phoenix rising from the flame of a burning city.

The narrow door of the Halonian Phoenix box faces outward, into the heart of the great furnace. This is the first time Bryn has seen Halonian craftsmanship, but it is as he has always read about it: covered in holes and portals woven within the cover art.

This will be a tough worksite Bryn knows. Narrow opening. Inset a foot or more within the brick line. Lighting not optimal. But Bryn has all the right tools, and the Book tells him the way.

When Akkeen first sees that Bryn is inspecting the hearth once again and moving his hands along the bricks, he makes no attempt to hide his enthusiasm.

He calls across to Iasu in Otessite…

He looks over to Kray, switching to Yuoric, saying, "He has done it. Your retainer has found the box!"

Thorn had been inspecting the north way before Bryn's discovery.

With more light and a closer stance, Thorn can make out some of the imagery. The primary picture seems to be of great lions chasing and downing prey animals.

As Bryn continues inspection and begins an attempt to crack the safe, an eerie sound echoes through the darkness. It is difficult at first to discern where the sound is coming from, but it is from one of the three dark hallways leading out of the furnace chamber.

A voice?

Multiple voices.

"bbbbeeeeeee-zzzzzzzzaaaaaaaa. bbbbbeeeeeee-ttthhuuuuuuuu. kkkkaaaaaaa. ddddrrrraaaaaaaa."

Quiet at first, but louder now.

The east hallway. The sound is coming from the east. Something is approaching. Fast.
Nov 7, 2018 3:47 pm
Akkeen snaps to attention, listening carefully to identify, holding his bulky plank bow sternly.

"Edimmu," he says to Iasu. A grave look on his face.

He turns to Kray and to Ahri, "Edimmu are coming! Wicked fliers. Stand ready. Protect the lights!"

Bursting in on the scene, they fly through the air with startling speed and erratic motion ---- flying heads?!?!

Swooping in and out of shadows, looping high and low, rounding in and out of the great hearths - they bark and buzz with inhuman voices.
Mixed in with the indecipherable words are accusing shouts and threats in buzzing Heshbaan speech.
"SHAME!"
"SLAVE!"
"YOU ARE FALLEN!"
"DOOM!"
"YOUR ORGANS!"

It is difficult to count how many of them. Perhaps 8. Perhaps a dozen.

They begin to loop down and assault.
