Ha. Although come to think of it, didn't the tea give +1 to the roll, not advantage?

Oh yeah, Kray would drink up on that tea since the timing was optimal.

OOC:
It gives Advantage at first then shifts to +1 later. Too bad for Thorn I guess; bad timing break.
OOC:
I’m only on phone access until later; will wait for Iasu’s Save attempt to see what happens to start this round.

DMJ says:
Akkeen snaps to attention, listening carefully to identify, holding his bulky plank bow sternly.

"Edimmu," he says to Iasu. A grave look on his face.

He turns to Kray and to Ahri, "Edimmu are coming! Wicked fliers. Stand ready. Protect the lights!"
Iasu reflexively takes cover in the shadows and nocks an arrow, and draws back his bowstring. Steady breath. Eyes sharp. Loose. He sends an arrow streaking towards the first edimmu to appear, then repositions and draws.

Then, he hears the horrible moan and his mouth goes dry.

Iasu's arrow finds its perfect mark. It pierces into the side of one of the edimmu's head, causing the fiend to flutter it's wings erratically. It barks out in fright, "BBARBSS!!!! AZZZZAAAAAAA!!!", and then crashes to the floor at the outer rim of the light, flapping twice more and then falling still.

Descending from the pitch blackness overhead, it is as if they appear out of nowhere. Crashing down on their two victims they land like tarps of spoiled flesh.

With skin and coloring similar to a black eel, wide fins that seem more fit for swimming that flying, they look like creatures from the sea rather than from land or air. Once they attack, they open their pale eyes, sharp mandibles expand, and their dreadful whirling barbed tails begin to lash out like wild animals of their own!

OOC:
LARGE and NASTY!
All who FAILED Save have Frightened condition until next round when they can make another attempt.

Attacks vs. Akkeen and Thorn.
OOC:
Ox, this is a little convoluted I know. A quick summary I think...
1. See if first Attack, Advantage applied, is a hit. If so, begin Restrained Condition. If not, you're good there.
2. See if tail Attack is a hit. It is at Advantage if Restrained from #1 above. If not, it is the first die roll.
3. If Tail Attack is a hit, Save DC 13 STR vs. possible trip. Fail means knocked Prone. Save means you're still standing

Rolls

Attack Akkeen (Restrained if Hit) - (1d20+6)

(14) + 6 = 20

Attack Akkeen Advantage (Restrained if Hit) - (1d20+6)

(1) + 6 = 7

Attack Thorn Advantage (Restrained if Hit) - (1d20+6)

(10) + 6 = 16

Attack Thorn Advantage (Restrained if Hit) - (1d20+6)

(7) + 6 = 13

Tail hit/trip vs Akkeen (DC 13 STR Save or knocked Prone) - (1d20+6)

(12) + 6 = 18

Tail hit/trip vs Akkeen (Advantage if Restrained, DC 13 STR Save or knocked Prone) - (1d20+6)

(3) + 6 = 9

Damage Tail Akkeen - (1d8+3)

(7) + 3 = 10

Tail hit/trip vs Thorn (DC 13 STR Save or knocked Prone) - (1d20+6)

(16) + 6 = 22

Tail hit/trip vs Thorn (Advantage if Restrained, DC 13 STR Save or knocked Prone) - (1d20+6)

(14) + 6 = 20

Damage Tail Thorn - (1d8+3)

(2) + 3 = 5

Akkeen is frozen rigid from the dread moan. He looks up in silent horror as the mushussu crashes down on him from above.

Attack Hit. Begin Restrained Condition.
Tail Hit. Required DC 13 STR Save or knocked Prone
Save successful

Akkeen is engulfed by the heavy body of the beast, its fin-like wings stretching completely around him. The beast bends its own spine trying to drive Akkeen's head forward and tip him off balance, even as the cruel boney tail thrashes his legs like a lash.

Somehow Akkeen is able to stay on his feet, but barely. He struggles to free himself from the heavy beast that enwraps him like a foul blanket.

Rolls

STR Save v. DC 13 - (1d20+3)

Vs. Thorn..
Thorn begins with Frightened Condition.

[ +- ] Prone Condition

Bryn, Iasu, and Ahri are nearly frozen in fear as the dark beasts fall into the light, unleashing their full violence against Thorn on one side of the hearth column and Akkeen on the other side. The dire moaning call felt as if it would crack a man's spirit. Now seeing the beasts - it is as if they should not be. They are from another world and their presence is overwhelming.
[ +- ] Frightened Condition
Kray and Maeriks shudder and feel the wave of terror roll over them as well but are able to fight through it, steeling their strained nerves enough to maintain mobility.

On opposite sides of the hearth column, Akkeen and Thorn are both engulfed by the monsters. Thorn is at risk of losing his footing and being driven to the ground as the bone tail thrashes at his legs trying to trip him.

Bottom of Round 2 (BR2) OPEN FOR ACTION
OOC:
We're calling this BR2 for simplicity's sake. In in-world time, some extended seconds lapsed after R1 when the edimmu heads were backed off and whirling around buzz screaming like assholes.
OOC:
Sorry I'm not doing a big map effort. Theater of the mind on this one. Everyone is encircling one of the great hearth columns with Bryn inside. One attack vs. Thorn on one side, the other Attack vs. Akken on the other.

Iasu keeps moving, flitting among the shadows, to attack from cover, but he is hampered somewhat by a sudden inability to move even an inch closer to the hellish creatures that have engulfed Akkeen, and the northerner Thorn. Struggling to control his trembling fingers. he draws and shoots at the one on his half-brother.

Iasu
BR2

Iasu's nerves are rattled and his arrow flies true and imbeds in the thick hide of the dark mushussu as Akkeen continues to thrash beneath misses the mark, sailing harmlessly over the monstrosity that still engulfs Akkeen.

Attack v. M1: HitMiss
OOC:
Jabes, adjusted this later after you posted the Disadvantage roll that missed earlier. Thanks for the honesty. I guess I'm rewarding you with the responsibility of getting the real results, changing a previous undeserved Hit to a legitimate Miss?

Akkeen
BR2

Akkeen's heavy plank bow clatters to the ground as he drops it to grapple with the monstrosity. The string of the bow is knocked free and the large bolt charges out with a twang, narrowly missing nearby Maeriks before it hits a stone outcropping of the hearth column and breaks with a sharp snap.

Akkeen yells out as he tries desperately to tear the monster away from him. Already enwrapped, it is an extremely difficult task.

Action: Attempt break Restrained condition

Result: Akkeen loses comparison. Restrained condition continues in to R3.

Akkeen's efforts are not enough. The huge fin flaps of the mushussu roll forward in heaves, further constricting Akkeen on both sides. His arms are being pressed close against his body and he is losing more freedom of movement.

Rolls

Akkeen Grapple M1 - (1d20+3)

Akkeen Grapple M1 Disadvantage - (1d20+3)

OOC:
By INT Investigation check (already rolled secret by DM)...

Kray recognizes the danger of hacking full force at the beast wrapping Thorn. There would be high risk of injuring Thorn as well. He and the others would have to take extra caution to hit at the right angles to ensure damage only against the beast and not their friend as well.

Normal Attacks vs. Monsters with Restrained victims: half damage to monster, half damage to victim Restrained

Attacker Option: take Disadvantage on Attack roll, hit applies all damage to monster and none to Restrained victim
Nov 12, 2018 5:47 pm

Thorn

Thorn tries desperately to cut the creature, but he is overwhelmed and off-balance. The long blade is nearly impossible to swing at a target at such close range.

The expert swordsman cannot get a square hit against this wildly abnormal opponent this time.
