Myrmidon
R7

The desperate myrmidon shouts a battle cry and charges at Ivor, spear and shield in hand.
OOC:
Initiative below. If you win, take Action as desired.
OOC:
The more I think about this, I feel like Bryn is probably in range for Movement and Action on this guy as well - if he wants to get involved. Myrmidon is probably 25 feet from Bryn. So Ox, your call if Bryn wants to go active on this engagement, or maybe you just have him playing back up support to Ivor on as-needed basis. Not sure, so wanted to mention it.

Kray leans in close to Valates. He can smell the blood dribbling out of Valates' mouth. Picking up a stray scrap of cloth, Kray gingerly dabs and wipes the blood from the dying man's mouth, almost like a doting mother. He smiled fiendishly at Valates. The humor of Kray's mock caregiving was not lost on the dying man, who spit up with a gurgling chuckle.

There was nothing to be done. If the wound wasn't fatal, the poison would finish the job.

Kray sighed, holding Valates' face up by the chin, blood gurgling over his fingers. "Come now, Valates. Don't die just yet. We've only begun to enjoy our stay aboard your..." Kray caught himself. "...make that our ship."

Kray leaned closer. He could almost taste Valates' blood now. "Tell me. Who sent you? Or should I assume vendetta against your family, starting with your closest kin?"

If someone with Medicine could prolong Valates life a moment that would be great. Intimidate for answers from Valates.

Ivor
R7

Ivor slaps his net over the head and shoulders of the myrmidon, capturing his spear and shield. Nonchalantly Ivor draws his knife and begins to stab the Heshbaan. There is little the man can do to resist. One strike hits the man in the torso, puncturing a lung. The next severs right through his carotid artery, covering his neck in rich red blood. The man panics as he thrashes in the net.

As he bleeds and dies, Ivor jerks the myrmidon to the ground and then unwraps his net from the Heshbaan mercenary and his weapons.

Ivor twists and rolls his net, throwing it over his opposite shoulder as he walks away towards the center sunken level of the boat.

Joining the others, Ivor nods in appreciation of the carnage on the deck. He doesn't bat an eyelash at whatever the hell Kray is up to with Valates - just walks on by, looking for his trident. Eventually he finds the weapon and heads back aft, assessing the vessel's condition as he goes.

The cloud of fog is still clinging to the bow deck of the Korvaran. Ivor delves into the obscured area and gets low to the deck to look for his trident. Going directly to the area where he tossed it, it does not take long to find.

Glowing through the fog, Ivor can tell that the oil fire still burns over the rails, on the port bow hull sector. Ivor knows that it needs to be addressed soon before the fire shifts fully from oil to wood fuel.

Still, it is difficult to see in this fog.

Thorn

Thorn sees that the wound is from a blade, not an arrow. In a quick inspection he sees a bloodied karambit dagger on the deck. One of Bryn's blades. Entry was on the right of the neck, so the weapon had to have come from the starboard side. Valates must have pulled it out and dropped it after being hit.

"You know I won't name an employer, Mercon. Why do you care which it is anyway? Doesn't matter - they are all in it. War brings everyone together, and you should know now that war is coming." He chokes on the blood that is running into his windpipe.

After coughing, continues. "I don't get it why you are ....why you ... are . . . here...anyway...."
OOC:
Valates is from the Iron Legions, a Korvaran mercenary organization, but not associated with a noble house. Their organization is not a family affair. Instead it is managed by leadership group that rises up from valor, experience, and bravado, of course with a dash of politics.
Valates seems to drift off, losing his responsiveness. He is on the brink of death, if not gone already.

"... get bent, Kray..." Valates says, his eyes still closed. "...(unintelligible)...dying here... (unintelligible) ... you'll get..."

And with that, Valates breathes his last.

Kray remembers fighting alongside of Valates and others in the Iron Legions, around three years ago now at Giant's Ford.

Though always an asshole, Valates was a good troop. The Heshbaans fighting for him now were not up to par for Valates's usual squad, which was usually made up of mostly of battle-hardened Korvarans and Pyloseans. Kray knows that things must have changed recently for Valates to be caught running operations with a group of such poor quality soldiers.

Ivor takes charge on the Korvaran as only a seadog can. The sight of the rowers' chains make his Dannein blood boil. Eyes bulging in his rage he takes an axe and starts hacking away at the chains while issuing a steady stream of curses at half the oarsmen to grab buckets and start hauling river water to douse the fire on the prow, the other half to keep her steady, godsdammit, and another stream of curses at the fog that continues to impede vision, making both the firefighting and navigation hazardous operations at best.

Listening to the death rattle croaking from Valates, Bryn lets out a chuckle and begins fishing through the Korvaran's pockets for a key ring or anything else of value.

He then begins unbinding the rowers from their manacles.

Haha of course I forgot that the oarsmen are chained. Ivor would definitely have broken those chains with an axe or his bare hands if necessary. Editing my post to reflect this. Will also add rolls in case they're needed.

Kray smiled and let go of Valates' face, allowing it to go slack as the blood continued to trail out of his mouth. Poor bastard. Noting Bryn's going through Valates' pockets, he spoke. "Do me a favor. Find anything that even hints at who sent Valates, or where he came from, let me know."

At that, Kray stood and took in the scene around him for a moment. Sinking boats. Burning boats. Confused crew. Manageable chaos. Noting that Ivor was going to work on the fire, he raised his voice as a means of addressing all who could hear and understand, maintaining a relaxed demeanor. "Let's get these ships tied off to one another! If I'm not mistaken, we've got property that needs moving!"

Kray's going to take efforts to get these two ships to settle next to one another. Hook poles, rope, etc. We should probably move whatever we need to from our old ship to our new prize.

Ivor and Bryn work together to free the chained oarsmen. Ivor shouts them into organization, forming a firefighter line. Within a few minutes the bow hull fire is doused. The fog dissipates as they are working. Ivor inspects the bow hull. The port side definitely has some blackening, but no severe structural damage. Over time some of the damaged boards will likely weaken and rot, but it is nothing that threatens the boat right now, and a repair could be done easily at a shipyard.

On the starboard bow, on the outside hull below the railing, Ivor sees the Korvaran ship's name written prominently. For those who can read: "Iron Eagle."

Though half or more of the crew cannot speak Yuoric, several can and translate commands to others. All of the freed oarsmen obey without delay. They are all attentive and quick to react, but still cautious and afraid. They quickly complete the grim task of dumping bodies overboard and swabbing the deck with fresh water. Ivor knows that the blood must be diluted and washed away before it sets into the wood under the heat of the rising sun.

As a result of the fight, there are four Heshbaan raiders who survived and are taken as prisoners, three of whom are injured:
(1) injured by very first javelin thrown by Maeriks on the Keshet. This guy was actually left alone on the Keshet, but was too scared injured or stupid to flee
(2) injured by Kray, a large slash wound on his face a downward across his chest. He's in the worst shape of all the injured.
(3) injured by Maeriks' pole shaft bash, face severely bruised
(4) uninjured, spared by Thorn

There are 13 oarsmen, those formerly chained. Most seem to be Heshbaans. Mixed in are maybe a few Kortellans (though racial ethnicity is not entirely recognizable between those groups) and two who have darker skin tone, likely Jbailian or Bishtu.

Directing the crew and captives, with Bryn's help on translation as necessary, Ivor and Kray are able to get a labor line going to lift, carry, and pass up all gear and wanted supplies from the Keshet to the Korvaran.

The Keshet continues to take on water. By the time the last of the supplies are lifted and the workers pulled back on board, the Heshbaan river boat is flooded and the rails fall beneath the surface. A few minutes more and it is pulled completely under, although the very top of the mast and the rolled sail tilts over but remains visible. The Keshet now sits on the floor of the Hodel River.

From Valates, Bryn scores a bag of coins that was wrapped up tightly and strapped on a waist holster. They are all Korvaran mint. The Korvaran gold coin is the Korvaran Eagle, in slang they are called Birds or Bright Birds. There are 180 Eagles.

Valates also has a smaller accessible coin pouch, with Heshbaan money. 7 shovalt (gp) and 22 keshat (sp)

One thin animal skin writing mat, folded and tucked into a leather fold carrier under Valates's breast plate. It looks like a list written in charcoal, some sort of tally of number of troops, their ethnicity, place of origin, rating on training level (1, 2, or 3), and a ship date (says "ship launch to Proll" - Proll is a major port in Korvar). By the numbers, it looks like it tracks the shipment of nearly 3500 mercenary troops over the last 6 months (right before winter, and then new entries in the recent spring months). Kray knows that those are pretty good numbers - a lot of troop movement.

Valates has good weaponry, all Korvaran forged by the look of it, so quality is well-known. Gladius, field knife, spear, shield. His armor is good, but it is definitely marked unmistakably in the style of a Korvaran soldier.

Assembling all of the loose change from dead Heshbaans is possible as well. It's not a lot, I don't want to track it, but let's just say that everyone adds a small batch of Heshbaan coinage to what they are already carrying in loose change for quick market purchases, small time bribes, tips, ales, food.

OOC:
Players' Club,
The Iron Eagle aka The Korvaran is still sea worthy and operational. All gear from the Keshet is recovered. There is enough crew among freed debtor slaves and captured injured raiders to get all 16 oars moving. If the sail is put down, there is a little bit of wind too. Ivor has Water Vehicles Proficiency and has had past history and recent experience managing large crewed boats, so you have a capable ship captain.

I pressed the narrative forward to summarize a stabilization, but you guys are welcome to develop and call out specific details or special actions taken by the characters.

The village of Osher, your original destination on the Hodel River, is supposedly about a day and a half upriver if you are heading there.

That is the generality, so let me know if we are still underway or also definitely let me know if there is anything to address or any change of course.
