Holy shit, Hyp. Skin o' teeth is right, dice lined up by narrowest of margins.

Kray stopped for a moment and spoke to the group quietly after they had progressed into the Jara Hili for almost an hour, his mind in the present but always leaning toward the future.

The moment finally presenting itself, he lit a spliff and took a long drag.

"From here we head straight northwest, avoiding roads as the crow would fly, toward the mountains. Deep enough in them to avoid any detection, just inside the foot hills."

He cracked a smile, clearly pleased with their escape from Gelshemish, weighty bags in tow.

"We are not, however, going on a mountain climbing expedition. We'll keep it simple enough for the trek with a focus on deterring pursuit. In essence, the least expected path any would expect to be taken. The long way, so to speak."

He cast his eyes around the men, exhaling a cloud before continuing, voice still low.

"Through the mountains, we'll reach the Alornic Sea, then travel by seafaring vessel to Arkadd. I know the language and I assume none present have any ties to such a remote region; as such, I don't expect any would be pursuers to expect such a destination to be our intent."

Kray chewed the spliff as smoke curled from his mouth, inhaling through his nostrils.

"Besides, I've always wanted to see Arkadd... jungles, mountains, ruins... sounds exotic. What's not to like?"

Another consideration crossed his mind as a chuckle escaped him.

"To be clear, although I'm known in some locales as "Kray Lord Mercon", you men owe me no fealty or allegiance. However, those of you who would accompany me to the exotic lands of Arkadd..."

A sincere look of respect flourished onto Kray's face, his eyes shining admiration for the men present who had made it through the trials of years past or the literal hell of the Cursed Palace only hours ago, let alone their narrow escape from Gelshemish, fraught with pitfalls almost every step of the way.

"It would be, to say the least, an honor."

J, that escape was dope track and an amazing curtain for an Episode 2 that didn't quite go as planned. Despite the.mixed bag of success and failure, I loved it. Truly an expression of the freedom allowed in DT.

Fellas, we failed the mission as outlined by Palla Ba, but still found a win in our own way, despite the losses.

Wealthy and alive, well done.

Simush bides his time, watching his quarry as they track through the mud and the reeds. He checks his bowstring out of habit, though he knows everything is in readiness. On a nearby branch, the edimmu flyer head assigned to him, buzzes irritatingly, making his horse paw the ground nervously.

Simush knows this terrain intimately. Spent years honing his bushcraft here, when he was Simush, and then when he became Iasu. But that is all in the past. Now he is Simush, "shining horns," son of Na'ahma and Vine Incubus. And now, after the reckoning above the Pit in the Cursed Palace, Prince-elect among the powers and principalities in Gelshemish. In truth, he doesn't care for the honors and the riches. All he cares about is finally belonging, and finally having no need to hide his true self.

But first, he must do this thing. He must reclaim the gold from the thieving foreigners. There they are - the Jeresian, Mercon, and his armsman, Thorn. The Dannein bull. The Sarceran. Surprisingly, the Alijanian is among them, and Bryn is not. It changes nothing.

Simush nocks an arrow, selects his target, draws the bowstring to his cheek...

OOC:
OK.
Immediate maximum controversy.
With near-certainty of increased controversy every round.

This is the scenario though. Player-driven scenes. DM reporting for duty.

Up front, will try my best to manage, - as always a priority on cold indifferent realism - but I can almost guarantee I will make some bad calls on tough calls, rulings that won't be popular. Hopefully the dissatisfaction will be evenly distributed amongst everyone involved. Ha?!

All my entries will be fully open. No Notes from me. Since that has Pros and Cons, maybe that isn't even the right call. I don't know. But transparency is the highest priority now.

And as we can see, the house is on fire.
Either some of it or all of it is going to burn down.
As that happens, everyone here will be able to see it.

Shot one en route...

An arrow plunges into Maeriks's chest. A hard convulsion runs through the big Dannein's entire body, like a shockwave.

Maeriks looks down at the arrow wide-eyed in surprise.

Then his eyes fall blank and he tilts backwards. He hits the shin-deep water with a splatter, his heavy backpack hitting first and then tipping his bulky body over to the side. His right shoulder settles into the muck and his head tilts forward, lifeless and at the edge of the water's surface.

The shot came from the trees to the north, but no archer is seen.

Initially going by Passive Perception for sighting.

Ruling: The total length of the flood plain crossing was about 120 yards. It was chosen because it was the shortest distance to the forest that wasn't completely impassable. Kray and Ryhim were about 60 yards across/ 60 yards remaining to reach the far side which is the edge of the rising ground that is stable and is also the edge of the forest. Thorn, Maeriks, Sizhen are about 10 yards back. The entire flood plain is Difficult Terrain. There is some intermittent shrubbery that might provide concealment (possible options for Hide, though potentially at a Disadvantage challenge), but they would provide little to no Cover.

Other dimensions/land layout:
For ease, the forest edge, from where the shot was fired is NORTH for the escaping team. So that edge is 60 yards (180 feet) away. The shot came from further in beyond that, not right on the edge.

To the east is a long stretch of the same Difficult Terrain. Running along the high cut road (south, behind the group) which runs east-west.

To the west is a pretty much the same. Difficult Terrain. Although it does convert from flood plain to full pond at about 100 yards west. On the other side of that 80 yard fully water-covered zone, it blends out to intermittent thick reed fields.

Of note:
Ryhim took a sling and bag of rock ammo pellets from the cart that he bought from the woodcutter.
Kray also found two javelins in the cart and has them in possession also.

Dang.
Iasu Simush repays Maeriks for this scene with a kill shot center-mass.

Villainy!

The foreign raider thieves cross the flood plain to make good their escape after a successful invasion and robbery, of Iasu's Simush's home.

Villainy?

Simush actions laying down some SILENCE on the response boards. Nuclear winter wasteland level silence.
(I’ve got to laugh despite the tension.)

I’m game to play this out. Anybody with me, or are we done?

Dodge and Movement to assault the ambush?
Dive Prone and Crawl?
Active Perception Checks?
Use Maeriks’ fat body as Cover?
Shield Rules Bonus Action for Cover?
Start yelling out for negotiation or threats?

I don’t think this group is done.

But if we are, let me know.

By post or by your silence. Ha!

When Sizhen sees Maeriks fall, he instinctively reacts.

He makes a short dash to a shrubbery and dives into the soggy ground. Keeping a low profile, he pulls his heavy backpack off of his shoulders and gets as much of his body behind it as he can.

He scans forward, trying to find the archer who sent the shot.

Action: Dash
Bonus Action: Eye for Detail. (with Steady Eye) - Perception Check at Advantage

"A masked archer," Sizhen shouts out to the group. "Ten meters in from the wood line. Base of the tall bristlecone pine, left of the darkened grouping of cypress."

He studies quickly again and continues the loud report.

"A horse further up the hill and right. And on the yew branches, two trees right, 20 feet up - an edimmu flyer head. There, see it's wings."

The shooter is difficult to see at first, but by the description from Sizhen, everyone locks on.

The sniper leans in behind a tree, only allowing a thin silhouette reveal as he sights for targets.

He hears the arrow impacting, then sees the big Dannein fall. Thorn drops his treasure and sloshes over to Maeriks, hunching over to create a smaller target of himself.

Upon reaching his friend he drops down beside him.

"Big man," he says, pulling the huge man around so he can see his face as well as the wound.

"Maeriks." A gentle wake-up slap to the face.

Required Action, All PCs: Roll for Initiative!

IMPORTANT:
Use official D&D 5e Initiative Rules, by the PHB.

Arguable: Simush's first shot was in Surprise. He should get a free shot outside of Rounds.

Arguable: The crossing party is on high alert, looking for danger in all directions, actually thinking an attack is possible at any moment. Passive Perception was in effect (though no one's Passive was high enough to notice in advance). The crossing party should not be vulnerable to Surprise in the circumstance.

Ruling: Simush's shot will be considered first in Initiative order this Round 1. All other PCs can Action first come-first serve. That will be considered the remainder of Round 1. Initiative results called for in Required Action above will be used to frame out recurring Initiative Order for Round 2 an onward.

Maeriks hangs on by a thread.

When Thorn checks, he can tell Maeriks is still breathing, barely.

The arrow is impaled in the big man's chest, surely damaging internal organs.

OOC:
Yo, Jabes. Inspector Sizhen the Inquisitive is going to squint his chinky eyes in both curiosity and anger. He intends to Observe what happens when his blades slice into the half-breed shooter's torso. He plans to Investigate the results of a deep stab wound inflicted upon Simush's partially-human left kidney. He already has a pretty good Perception about the likely physiological effects of slicing open Simush's demonic carotid artery, and will strive to give a demonstration of that there at the wood line when he arrives.
The Inspector estimates that he will solve this murder mystery within the next 7 Rounds.
And by "solve", he means "commit another murder upon the shooter".
It's elementary.
Quite.

Initiative.

Also, how deep is the water, J? And I've got to say, hiding on horseback... sounds like disadvantage to me. Being on horseback is going to make that just a *little* more difficult, to say the least.

Kray picks up the pace as he advances toward the treeline, javelin at the ready, taking the first available cover to minimize the enemy's opportunity for shots.
