Jabes.plays.RPG says:

I realize now my post didn't convey this (should have included calling out instructions to Thorn and Bryn, and then Bonus Action Dash withdrawal), but this is exactly Iasu's intent. Even if these dogs didn't come with a self-destruct protocol, this sort of skirmishing, hit-and-run tactic is Iasu's bread and butter. If allowed, will edit my post accordingly.
OOC:
Jabes, we can tweak it to get what you are looking for I think.

I think I generally had it that way anyhow, but didn't map out every mechanic of it. Here it is though, in my estimation:

In the complete darkness, Ranged Attacks would have Disadvantage at best (could argue that they would miss entirely, since Darkness is like Blinded Condition).

Just thinking it through realistically though, I think you CAN fight someone close-range hand-to-hand in the Darkness. It's arguable that that should be Disadvantage as well, but I don't want to go that far. There is a very small remnant of light from the great room. Plus when someone is right up on you engaged, I think both sides can use enough sensory to duke it out evenly. Generally.

So with your writing that Iasu went up until he could get an attack at targets, I felt like that meant he went right up to the 5' point blank range, and used the Close Quarters Shooter Feature for a normal shot.

Then you said Hide if possible, so that would suggest withdrawal a distance and Hide. Wrote it something like that in the narrative.

Technically I guess Iasu went adjacent to Hound 1 and then moved away. Could it have allowed a Reaction OA? Maybe. Would have to think about it. I didn't think about it very long. Figured a Bonus Action use of Disengage or that Skirmisher feature would keep Iasu safe, plus the dogs in that moment were laser-focused on Bryn-Thorn sandwiches. But I didn't map it out in Mechanics Blue to explain it all.

See what you think of that and let me know if you have any corrections needed, but I'm fine with saying Iasu made the close-quarters strike and then withdrew back to somewhere near the threshold of the hallway and the great room, and then tucked into the shadows.

Ezeriah says:

I forget, do the hounds blow immediately upon death? Also, is there a door in that north doorway J?
OOC:
The group has seen, generally speaking, that when these dogs are put down (and they seem tougher than your average pup), they smoke and then catch on fire, with a slow burn that turns to a rolling burn. During that time they revive to move around for a few seconds longer before erupting in a pulse of projecting hot flames as their bodies turn to flammable sludge.
OOC:
No doorway. It's simply an open walkway with minimal threshold trim structure.

R9
Bull Maeriks
OOC:
First off: CB, I love the writing that describes the bull's movements and primal thoughts. It includes animalistic nervousness and reaction to things that would be confusing and frightening to an animal. I can picture it like bulls in bull fights or running of the bulls in Spain - where these huge injury machines are roaming around back and forth trying to figure out what is going on exactly. This last entry you wrote, I could see it like a film. Ha!
When the bull goes back to press the threatening attacker again, it can feel that there is life still in this body. It hears the metal-wrapped meat bag making sounds.

Balis gags out blood from his pulverized face as he coughs. He claws for his axe painfully with one hand. The other hand raises instinctively to try to grasp at the bull's head and horns. A low growl rumbles out from his swollen throat and he coughs again, purging blood out in a spray that splatters on the top of the bull's head.
OOC:
CB, that's narrative on detection of life signs still in Balis, a strange but interesting payoff that seems reasonable for the bull's persistence on making sure predators are really dead when they are put down.
With that in mind, post in if you want to adjust Action to pound the fuck out of Balis or if you want to leave him in the cut and continue with previous Action as written.
Either seems fine. I'll be forward with the details so we can cut to the chase:
* stay and play: I feel like Attacks would be pretty much auto hits given the circumstance. You can roll to see if there are Criticals for fun, but I think it would be a massacre if a bull stayed on task for another Round to finish off a guy who's already on death's door.
* turn and go: Reaction OA from Balis seem unlikely. You can cover the distance to get to the dog fight, but it is slightly out of reach to cover in Movement 40 alone. Would require Dash spend, as you had predicted possible.
Let us know.

Akkeen approaches in close at Uburatu and shouts.

"You are going to pay for this, Uburatu! Worse than death - I swear to you!"

The shirtless tattooed man's voice is filled with hatred and his eyes are wide with fury, perhaps madness. He clutches his mace and seems on the brink of attack, though held back barely by whatever thin line of control is in play, whether it is fear of Uburatu or a grudging acceptance of the surrender.

Elam puts an arm out, sword diverted away carefully, to nudge his younger brother back.

Then Iasu's call of danger rings out.

OOC:
working this through
OOC:
Iasu's R9 Action in, could be modified on positioning if Jabes needs it.
OOC:
Bull Maeriks sent something, but I sent some info developments, need choice to see if he stays or goes.
OOC:
Akkeen is freaking out. Namtur just trying to live. Elam is keeping an eye on things - hasn't committed just yet.
OOC:
Iasu's warning is out in the great room right now. Sounds of dogs in the distance.
OOC:
Thorn and Bryn are off the grid in the darkness. In the active dogfight.
No freakin way I'm building a new map for that little area. Deaf ears to receive that request if it is made.
It's around 25 - 30' down, take a left, the boys and dogs are right there around the edge of that corner.
Jan 12, 2019 1:45 pm
Kray eyes stayed fixed on Ubaratu's as Iasu's warning registered. Hounds. His memory flickered back to the night battle in the forest, prior to their arrival in the city. Hounds exploding into fireballs of flame, flashes in the dark. Defeating the hounds came with explosively dangerous potential, and the battle was already hard fought.

And won.

He had seen Thorn and Bryn chase after a foe into the darkness of the north corridor. However, given the risk in unknown enemy territory, especially given the potential for an ambush or more traps, in that brief moment's time Kray considered the Why. It was a poor tactical choice, unless there was something he was unaware of.

He called out, shifting to a more militaristic style of communication, a reflex polished over years of battlefield experience that began in early childhood. He could still remember watching battles from the command section with grandfather Devil Hade, his Uncle Rison often present as well, a mentor to Kray. The first time he had barely been six years old.

"Thorn! Bryn! Report!" In general, Kray trusted their judgement in battle, especially Thorn, who he had. At the same time, he knew that a life and death struggle, played out with instruments of killing, could pull even the most experienced of combatants into a bloodlust of sorts, a need to finish what began. Lethally.

His eyes remained fixed on Ubaratu, a high value captive. He could almost feel the hate emanating from Trece and Akeen. Instinct nudged Kray to support Thorn and Bryn, but it was cold logic that held him as he didn't trust Akeen or Trece enough to let Ubaratu live. Not to mention there was still only one source of light, not a tactical consideration to overlook.

Kray's Heshaban was rough as he spoke sideways to Akeen, stoic and evenly measured, Judgement relaxed in his grip, coiled like a serpent revered by its Otessite makers. "Bring that torch and light another." The tone conveyed the importance of illumination, matter of fact. His gaze on Ubaratu still fixed, Kray spoke, his expression communicating more than his words:

I am not to be fucked with.

"Call your dogs off! Now!" Serpent's Judgement slithered closer to Ubaratu, almost imperceptibly, the threat ever so slightly more present now, shield gesturing toward the north corridor, facilitating the message. "If they die, you die."

Others had tested Kray's word in the past.

His eyes narrowed, clearly showing Ubaratu was to be measured and weighed. Imminently.

If Ubaratu had any doubts as to his conviction...

It will be the last lesson you learn.
Jan 12, 2019 2:36 pm
Still against the wall, Uburatu's eyes shift constantly. To Akkeen. To Kray. To Elam. To Kray. To Trece. To Kray.

Always back to Kray Mercon, the only man he is speaking with.

"I cannot call them off, Mercon," he says, now with eyes steady set on Kray. "They are my brother Naram's beasts. They heel to no one but him and Suter-Set who is gone mad now."

He heaves heavy breath and winces from pain in his leg. "I can help you kill them though. Deal with me. Get these thieves away from me. You are being deceived. You approach a site that you DO NOT understand."

"You fucking liar!" Akkeen burst out, again crowding in to come face to face with Uburatu. He is poised taunt, mace out to the side at the ready, vessels in his head and neck bulging as he shouts.

"Elam, kill him!" he backs up a step, shouting louder. "We need to kill him now! The hounds are coming!"

Akkeen's eyes are shifting back and forth between Kray and Uburatu.

"Kray Mercon, stand ready! He is trying to stall. He'll kill you. KILL HIM NOW!"

Akkeen is reaching into his bag and backing away. He is tight as a pressed coil.

Round 9 Whirlwind Management

Required Action: Bryn and Thorn post Actions in active dogfight

Required Action: Bull Maeriks decide whether to 1) leave Balis alive on the floor and run to dog fight as originally posted, or 2) adjust Action to stay at position to trample/gore Balis

The rest of the group is locked in the weird warp split limbo between RP and Combat timekeeping.

Generally seems like Uburatu, Akkeen, and Kray have taken up the time with a verbal exchange, which has them AND everyone else in the circle (Elam, Trece) by default sort of frozen on wait-and-be-ready-to-fucking-rock-at-the-drop-of-a-pin for the crucial seconds...
...UNLESS Trece decides to monkey-wrench the whole thing and shift it all back to Combat Management with a spoon.

If that's the call, Hyp, let us know and we'll see what happens. Something like this...

Optional Action:
Trece post Action at Mexican Standoff if it is anything other than Ready.
Jan 12, 2019 6:28 pm
The bull spins again, hearing the growls and barks. He strides forward to take on the new threat, then hesitates and turns back again to the corpse of Balil, nudging it one last time. A low growl rumbles out from Balis' swollen throat and he coughs again, purging blood out in a spray that splatters on the top of the bull's head. Flinching away instinctively, the bull turns to the side and steps forward, kicking with its hind legs. Then immediately turns again and drives a horn straight into the fallen Balis' chest. The bull presses down, holding the predator firmly against the ground as it's life fades.
Move 5 ft, then move back 5 ft, nuzzle, then move 5ft south and attack.

[ +- ] Otessite
His eyes flick briefly to Kray before finding there way back to Uburatu; he calls out to the militaristic leader in broken heshbaan "Akkeen talk from hate but truth still on tongue. Uburatu scared, he look way out; brother hounds good way out, hounds not go for Uburatu." His eyes slowly leave off of Uburatu and stay strictly on Kray "Give **reason** for Uburatu's air or see it stop."

Kray's eyes met Trece's for a moment, acknowledging his words.

Fair enough. Let's see what Ubaratu's value is.

Kray's voice was flat, emotionless. Detached and cold. A moment's pause and he again spoke to Ubaratu. "If you have no value to me, you will die." The hint of a feint smile. "Of course, these men will have the pleasure."

Bull Maeriks
R9

One of the bull's rear hooves cracks Balis's skull with a swift kick. It's horns break through armor and puncture the chest. The beastman's lifeless body is picked up slightly off the ground and tossed to the side in a scraping crash when the bull snatches its head back up and turns away triumphantly, sniffing and puffing its nostrils as it detects the sounds and smell of dogs.

Round 9 Wrap Up

Required Action: Bryn and Thorn post Actions in active dogfight in the north hall.
[ +- ] Battle Map, R9 in Progress
OOC:
Bryn and Thorn are off the map 25' north in the hall and then take a left.

So thinking ahead at possible questions, a 30' Movement or Disengage could get them back to the top edge of the great room.
OOC:
Everyone who is stuck in The Standoff, hold back on writing anything further. Whatever comes next in the time capsule pressure cooker will have to realize in R10, words or Action either one.
